Viva Lavender @ Lavender Road - European-Asian Cuisine with Modern Tapas, Wood-Fired Grill and Quality Steaks

VivaLavenderSep26-35

Tucked along Lavender Street, Viva Lavender is a neighbourhood gem that has quietly built a loyal following for its European-Asian cuisine, warm hospitality and relaxed dining ambience. Led by a young local culinary team, the restaurant blends European cooking techniques with Asian-inspired flavours, offering a menu that is polished yet approachable.

At the helm is Head Chef Colin Peh, who trained in a Michelin-starred kitchen in France and gained experience at established restaurants including Tapas Club and Kulto. He is joined by Sous Chef Danny Kwok, who previously honed his craft at Gaig Singapore. Together, the two Singaporean chefs bring their respective experiences to the kitchen, creating dishes that balance thoughtful execution with flavours suited for casual dining.

The menu revolves around four key pillars: Modern Tapas, Wood-Fired Grill, Steak and Wine. Much of the restaurant's identity comes from its use of the wood-fired Josper grill, house-made sauces, and carefully considered flavour pairings. Viva Lavender is now expanding its tapas selection, giving diners more choices to kick-start their meal while retaining the signatures that have helped establish its following.

VivaLavenderSep26-5
Salmon Tartare 4.5/5

One highlight of the new tapas selection is the Salmon Tartare ($22), a refreshing start to the meal that showcases the quality of its ingredients. Fresh, plump cubes of salmon are delicately seasoned, allowing their natural sweetness and clean flavour to shine through. Creamy avocado adds a buttery texture that complements the salmon without overpowering it.

The tartare is served over ajo blanco, a traditional Spanish chilled almond and garlic soup. Its creamy consistency and subtle nuttiness add another dimension to the dish, while the garlic contributes a gentle savoury depth. Pipirrana brings a refreshing vegetable element, while pomegranate adds little bursts of sweetness and acidity to brighten each mouthful.

The combination is thoughtfully balanced, with the salmon's freshness playing against the creamy ajo blanco and fruity accents. It is an elegant yet uncomplicated appetiser that sets the tone for the meal.

VivaLavenderSep26-9
Charred Cabbage 4.2/5

Vegetables take centre stage in the Charred Cabbage ($12), demonstrating how the wood-fired grill can transform a humble ingredient into something more compelling. Cooked in the heavy Josper grill, the cabbage develops a deep, smoky char on the outside while retaining moisture and tenderness within its layers.

The charred cabbage is laid over a bed of herb yoghurt, which adds a cool, tangy contrast to the vegetable's smokiness. House-made chilli oil adds a gentle kick, while a savoury Parmesan crumble brings an extra layer of umami. Crispy kale completes the dish with an earthy crunch that contrasts nicely with the tender cabbage.

VivaLavenderSep26-2
Lychee Mojito 4.2/5

For a refreshing accompaniment, the Lychee Mojito ($10) combines lychee, mint, lemon and soda in a lively, easy-drinking concoction. The soda gives the drink a pleasant effervescence, while lemon juice adds a zesty brightness that keeps the sweetness in check. Fresh mint leaves add a cooling, aromatic quality that complements the lychee's floral sweetness. The result is a light, refreshing drink that pairs particularly well with the restaurant's grilled dishes and richer plates. Its fruity profile makes it an approachable choice for those who prefer something sweet, citrusy and refreshing.

VivaLavenderSep26-19
Eggplant Crisps 4/5

The Eggplant Crisps ($12) offer a playful take on a familiar vegetable. Thin slices of eggplant are coated in a delicate batter and deep-fried until golden and crisp, then drizzled with wildflower honey. The thin slices achieve a light, airy crunch on the outside, while the eggplant stays tender inside. The contrast between the crisp coating and softer interior gives the dish its appeal, making it an enjoyable snack to share. The wildflower honey adds a gentle floral sweetness that complements the eggplant's naturally earthy flavour. Rather than making the dish overly sweet, the honey provides a pleasing counterpoint to the savoury notes of the fried vegetable.

VivaLavenderSep26-37
Hokkaido Scallop Risotto 4.2/5

Moving on to the mains, the Hokkaido Scallop Risotto ($38) brings together seafood richness and contrasting textures in a satisfying plate. The dish features four plump Hokkaido scallops, seared to develop a golden exterior while keeping the centres tender and succulent. The risotto is cooked in lobster stock, which lends the rice a deep crustacean aroma and concentrated seafood flavour. Parmesan is incorporated into the rice, contributing a savoury, umami-rich dimension that enhances the natural sweetness of the lobster stock. The dish's extra point of interest is the use of ponzu pearls. These delicate spheres burst in the mouth, releasing a bright citrusy acidity that cuts through the richness of the seafood stock and cheese. The tangy notes refresh the palate between bites, preventing the risotto from becoming too heavy.

VivaLavenderSep26-32
150-Day Grain-Fed Australian Black Angus Flat Iron (300g) 4.2/5

For steak lovers, the 150-Day Grain-Fed Australian Black Angus Flat Iron ($42 for 300g) is a worthwhile option. While ribeye is often favoured for its marbling and rich, buttery character, the flat iron offers a different appeal, with a more pronounced beefy flavour. The cut comes from the shoulder area and provides an alternative for diners who prefer a leaner steak. Despite having less fat and marbling than ribeye, a properly cooked flat iron can deliver a firm yet tender bite with plenty of beefy character. The 150-day grain-feeding process adds flavour, giving it satisfying depth without the heavier, fattier mouthfeel of some other cuts. Its relatively lean profile also lets the beef's natural taste take centre stage.

VivaLavenderSep26-42
Chocolate Mousse & Hazelnut 4.2/5

No meal is complete without dessert, and the Chocolate Mousse & Hazelnut ($16) is a fitting finale for chocolate lovers. Inspired by the flavours of Nutella, the dessert combines dark chocolate mousse with a lighter chocolate mousse, creating a contrast in intensity while keeping the presentation simple and elegant. The dark chocolate mousse delivers a deeper, more pronounced cocoa flavour, while the lighter mousse provides a smoother, airier counterpart. Together, the two layers offer a satisfying chocolate experience without relying on a single dense component. Scattered throughout are salted hazelnuts, which contribute a pleasant crunch and a nutty aroma. Their savoury saltiness contrasts with the chocolate's sweetness, while the hazelnuts' earthy notes reinforce the dessert's Nutella-inspired character.

Viva Lavender offers a relaxed neighbourhood dining experience where European culinary techniques meet Asian-inspired flavours. Under the guidance of Head Chef Colin Peh and Sous Chef Danny Kwok, the kitchen emphasises quality ingredients, thoughtful combinations, and the smoky character of wood-fired cooking. With its expanded tapas selection, wood-fired dishes and steak offerings, Viva Lavender is a comfortable spot for a casual meal with friends, a relaxed dinner or a gathering over food and wine. Its approachable menu and welcoming setting make it a neighbourhood dining destination worth considering for those looking for something beyond the usual casual fare along Lavender Street.

Viva Lavender @ Lavender Street – Modern European Plates, Charcoal-Grilled Meats & A Cozy Hideaway

Saffron Risotto w Hokkaido Scallop 4

Situated along a quieter stretch of Lavender, Viva Lavender brings together modern European flavours, house-aged meats and a breezy, welcoming space that transitions nicely from bright daytime dining to a warm, intimate evening ambience. With a strong focus on charcoal grilling and a surprisingly robust tapas/appetisers selection, the restaurant also offers one of the more attractive weekday happy hour deals in the area.

Truffle Mushroom Croquette 3
Truffle Mushroom Croquette 3.5/5

Perfect as a starter to warm up the palate, Truffle Mushroom Croquette ($8 for 2 pcs) comes crispy on the outside and creamy within. The truffle is intentionally subtle, allowing the mushroom filling to stand out without being overpowering. A comforting, easy-to-like bite.

Gambas Al Ajillo 2
Gambas Al Ajillo 3/5

A classic Spanish dish - Gambas Al Ajillo ($22) featuring four shrimps and toast. The house-made chilli oil adds personality, but we wished for a more potent garlic punch and more of that sizzling olive oil base to mop up with bread. Still enjoyable but could be bolder in flavour.

Padron Peppers 3
Padron Peppers 3.5/5

Padron Peppers ($16) came in a generous portion, ideal for sharing. Mildly spiced, light cream sauce on the side and topped with shaved cheese. Works well as a snack between heavier dishes or with drinks. Simple but satisfying.

Charred Cabbage 2
Charred Cabbage 3.8/5

One of the more memorable vegetable dishes is the Charred Cabbage ($16), where the wedges of cabbage are juicy inside, served with herb yoghurt and house chilli oil, and topped with crispy kale for texture. While delicious, smaller wedges might allow the charred flavour to develop even more deeply. Still a solid, well-balanced plate.

Spanish Vintage Chilled Striploin 3

Spanish Vintage Chilled Striploin 2
Spanish Vintage Chilled Striploin 3/5

Known for dry ageing and grilling their meats, we were recommended the Spanish Vintage Chilled Striploin ($42/300g). It was well-seasoned and delicious with the grilled garlic, but the cut leaned a little ‘veinier’ than ideal for us. That said, it showed enough promise that we’d gladly return for their Tomahawk next time.

Braised Lamb Shoulder 2
Braised Lamb Shoulder 3.5/5

Fork-tender and deeply comforting, this Braised Lamb Shoulder ($36) comes with silky pomme purée and yoghurt. The flavours reminded my dining partner of a refined rendang, which is rich and aromatic. Best shared, as the dish becomes quite heavy after several bites.

Miso Black Cod 2
Miso Black Cod 4.5/5

A standout for me is the Miso Black Cod ($45) - buttery, silky, and melts instantly - complemented by a luscious tobiko beurre blanc that adds brininess and depth. A dish we would order again without hesitation.

Saffron Risotto w Hokkaido Scallop 5
Saffron Risotto with Hokkaido Scallop 4.5/5

Another favourite of the night is the Saffron Risotto with Hokkaido Scallop ($38), which was exceptionally fresh, and the ponzu pearl rice carries beautiful umami with each spoonful. A luxurious, well-executed entrée.

Cocktails 1
Hot Yuzu Margarita and Negroni

Cocktails 2
Espresso Martini and Mimosa

Viva Lavender runs a Monday–Thursday Happy Hour (4:30-6:30pm):

• 1-for-1 cocktails from $15
• Housepour wines at $10/glass
• Beer Bucket at $35 for 5 bottles

We tried four cocktails, including their Hot Yuzu Margarita, Negroni, Espresso Martini and Mimosa, and all were surprisingly well-balanced. Definitely worth stopping by early for drinks.

Restaurant 1

Viva Lavender strikes a balance between cosy neighbourhood charm and polished modern European dining. While a few dishes could deliver a punchier flavour profile, the seafood plates and lighter tapas truly shine, making it a spot worth returning to, especially with their generous weekday Happy Hour.

Restaurant 2

The restaurant also caters well to private events and group bookings, offering two private sections: a contemporary front bar area ideal for smaller, social gatherings and a warm, semi-private rear dining space suited for seated meals or intimate celebrations. Both areas are available with a minimum spend requirement, providing flexibility depending on the group size and occasion.

Yanhuo Restaurant (烟伙餐馆) @ Cross Street - The Firework of Modern Chinese Cuisine and Vintage Charm

YanHuo28

Yan Huo Chinese Restaurant (烟伙餐馆) offers a modern yet homely dining experience built around the warmth of Chinese culinary traditions. The restaurant’s name, which translates to “flame of flavour,” reflects its commitment to wok hei-driven dishes and robust regional influences. The interiors combine modern Chinese aesthetics with a cosy, family-friendly atmosphere, ideal for gatherings or casual dinners. Service is attentive without being intrusive, and portions are generous, offering good value for money. A warm touch of modern Chinese and vintage charm to celebrate the ‘Fireworks’ of life!

YanHuo5
Cherry Tomatoes | Tangerine 4.2/5

The Cherry Tomatoes ($16), marinated with tangerine, burst with sweet and tangy flavours that are refreshing and appetising. It’s a light, palate-awakening starter that perfectly whets the appetite for the meal ahead.

YanHuo13
Dry Pot Cabbage with Chinese Bacon | Dried Chilli 4.2/5

The Dry Pot Cabbage with Chinese Bacon and Dried Chilli ($20) was well executed. The cabbage retained its crunch and natural sweetness, while the Chinese bacon added a savoury depth. The dried chilli brought just the right amount of heat to complete this aromatic and flavourful stir-fry.

YanHuo18
Mapo Tofu | Iberico Pork, A4 Wagyu 4.5/5

The Mapo Tofu ($28) is easily one of the best I’ve had. The silky tofu bathed in a rich, spicy, and umami-laden sauce is deeply satisfying. The use of premium minced Iberico pork and A4 wagyu elevates the dish with indulgent layers of flavour and texture. It’s a definite rice killer that will have you reaching for an extra bowl.

YanHuo30
Double Boiled Grouper Pot 4.5/5

The Double Boiled Grouper Pot ($48/$68) immediately caught my eye. Thick, firm slices of grouper are poached to perfection and paired with plump clams, firm tofu, and cabbage. The highlight, however, is the pumpkin broth — sweet, rich, and full of depth, providing comfort and nourishment in every spoonful.

YanHuo23
Pineapple La Zi Chicken | Cashew Nuts 4.2/5

The Pineapple La Zi Chicken ($28) features boneless chicken chunks deep-fried to a crisp golden exterior while remaining juicy inside. The addition of cashew nuts adds crunch, and the pineapple pieces balance the fiery chillies with refreshing sweetness. It is a playful and well-balanced rendition of the classic spicy chicken dish.

YanHuoInterior-3

Not to be missed is their value-for-money lunch set, available as a 2-Course ($38) or 3-Course ($58) option, perfect for those who want to enjoy Yan Huo’s refined flavours in a more accessible format.

Asador Singapore @ Joo Chiat Road - Wood-Fried Spanish Flavours in the Neighbourhood

Asador30

Tucked away in the heritage-rich enclave of Joo Chiat, Asador Singapore brings the soulful flavours of Basque-style cooking to the East with its wood-fired Spanish grill concept. Set in a cosy yet refined semi-casual setting, the restaurant’s warm neighbourhood vibe, attentive service, and authentic Spanish fare make it a gem perfect for both date nights and friendly gatherings.

Asador1
Jamon Iberico 4.2/5

We started our evening with a serving of Jamon Ibérico, carved tableside from a 100% acorn-fed whole ham leg. The thin slivers of ham were served with pan de cristal and grated tomato, offering a delightful balance of savoury richness and freshness. The quality and ritual of hand-carving echoed fond memories of Spain, bringing a slice of its culinary tradition to our table.

Asador6
Anchoas 4/5

Next, we had the Anchoas, featuring premium "00" anchovies from Santoña laid delicately atop toast. These prized fillets, which are thick, meaty, and packed with umami, strike a delicate balance between saltiness and subtle sweetness. Best enjoyed on toast to temper the intensity, this dish was both simple and luxurious.

Asador11
Tomate 4.2/5

The Tomate dish showcased a beautiful medley of grilled tomatoes, dressed in dry-aged beef fat, and accompanied by a pool of ajo blanco —a creamy, cold soup often described as a white gazpacho. The sweetness of the tomatoes harmonised with the richness of the dressing and the refreshing ajo blanco, creating an elegant and well-balanced plate.

Asador17
Col 4.5/5

A standout vegetable dish came in the form of Col, featuring grilled Hispi cabbage with anchovy-garlic dressing and topped with fried kale. The cabbage's natural sweetness, accentuated by charring, was elevated by the umami-laden dressing. The crispy kale added a delightful textural contrast, making this a dish greater than the sum of its parts.

Asador24
Chipirones 4.2/5

The Chipirones, or baby squid, were charcoal-grilled and stuffed with chorizo, then served atop a vibrant mojo verde. Perfectly grilled to a bouncy tenderness, the squid was smoky and juicy, while the chorizo stuffing delivered a spicy, savoury punch. The garlicky green sauce added a fresh and herbaceous finish.

Asador32
Sereto Iberico 4.5/5

From the wood-fired grill came the Secreto Ibérico, a prized cut of pork shoulder known for its marbling and tenderness. Grilled to perfection and paired with mojo picón, a bold, smoky red pepper sauce, the meat was exceptionally juicy. It was so tender it could be mistaken for beef. It was a clear highlight of the night.

Asador33
Tarta de Queso 'La Vina' 4.2/5

To end on a sweet note, we indulged in the Tarta de Queso 'La Viña', a tribute to the iconic Basque burnt cheesecake. With its caramelised top and creamy, almost molten centre, the dessert was indulgent without being heavy. It was a perfect finale to the meal.

Atic @ Citadines Connect City Centre Singapore - The Rooftop Restaurant Reopens with a New Contemporary Southeast Asian Cuisine

IMG_3136

The rooftop restaurant at Citadines Connect City Centre Singapore has recently reopened as Atic, offering a menu of contemporary Southeast Asian cuisine. Helmed by Chef Newein Dolph Toolseram, whose multicultural roots span Burmese, Chinese, Dutch, Thai, and Peranakan-Hokkien heritage, Atic presents a vibrant reflection of the region's rich culinary traditions — reimagined with modernity and Chef Newein's distinctive personal touch.

IMG_3132
Peperoncino Egg Noodles with seared Barramundi 3.8/5

As a start, Atic opens exclusively for weekday lunch, offering a well-priced menu featuring sharing sides and customisable lunch sets. The set allows diners to mix and match a base with their preferred protein, creating a satisfying and personalised experience. There are four base options to choose from. The Peperoncino Egg Noodles were pleasing with a springy texture, and the flavour profile was reminiscent of local soy sauce wanton noodles — savoury and comforting.

IMG_3127
Roti John with Ribeye 3/5

IMG_3117
Nasi Kuning with Signature Pork Chop Bakar 4/5

The Roti John, which uses Hainanese buns layered with a spiced omelette, had a lovely, sweet, bready aroma. However, the buns leaned too soft and doughy for my liking, lacking the airy, light texture one might expect. On the other hand, the Turmeric Basmati Rice, or Nasi Kuning, stood out with its fluffiness and aromatic spices, making it my preferred base for its well-balanced and comforting qualities. For something lighter, there's also the option of a mesclun salad.

IMG_3073
Brick Chicken 4.5/5

The Brick Chicken was a clear winner among the proteins — delightfully crispy skin enveloping tender, succulent meat. The Signature Pork Chop Bakar fared equally well. Inspired by Chef Newein's hometown, the pork is marinated in spices and grilled using traditional Malay-style techniques, resulting in flavours that evoke the smoky taste of satay. The Ribeye was simply seasoned and grilled to the right doneness, allowing its natural beefy flavour to take centre stage.

IMG_3110
Fried Oyster Mushrooms 3.8/5

While I found the Fried Oyster Mushrooms an interesting protein option, their deep-fried nature and addictive crunch made them feel more like a side dish than a main dish.

IMG_3095
Rojak 4.5/5

On the side menu, the Rojak ($13.90) was a refreshing and vibrant take on the traditional dish. Pomelo, cubed cucumber, pineapple, and turnip were tossed in a citrusy shrimp paste, paired with mesclun leaves and mixed herbs, and finished with croutons in place of the usual you tiao for the textural crunch.

IMG_3104
Chicken Wings 4/5

IMG_3114
Spiced Calamari 2/5

The Chicken Wings ($13.90) were their rendition of shrimp paste chicken, featuring juicy and tender meat beneath a thin, crisp, umami-packed crust, complemented by their housemade sambal. The Spiced Calamari ($13.90) came with a delicious roasted masala crust, but the calamari rings were somewhat bland, falling short in flavour.

IMG_3084
Grilled Hispi Cabbage 4/5

The Grilled Hispi Cabbage ($11.90) was deeply savoury, enriched by a bonito emulsion and shio kombu, though I found myself wishing for a hint of citrus to lift and balance the umami.

Lunch set menu starts from $17.90+, available Monday to Friday, 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM.

La Hong Dian Hotpot (辣红殿重庆干锅) @ Chinatown - New Chongqing Restaurant Offering 12 Specialty Dry Pots

IMG_1243

Mosque Street in Chinatown has become quite a hotspot for a variety of Chinese cuisines, and the latest addition to this bustling street is La Hong Dian Hotpot (辣红殿重庆干锅), a Chongqing restaurant specialising in dry pots. Their signature dish allows diners to enjoy it as what you see when it is first served and then transform it into a bubbling hotpot by adding soup, offering a dual dining experience.

IMG_1200

The cosy restaurant spans two levels, with four tables on the ground floor and a VIP room upstairs to accommodate larger groups.

IMG_1247
Century Egg with Green Peppers 3.5/5

We started our meal with the Century Egg with Green Peppers ($15), which featured slices of rich century egg topped with fragrant chilli crunch.

IMG_1248
Stir-fried Shredded Cabbage 3/5

Following this, the Stir-fried Shredded Cabbage ($28) provided a comforting, homely touch amidst the spicier dishes. For the steep price tag, we were expecting a lot more of it, including a stronger wok hei finish.

IMG_1241
Dry Pot Pork Ribs 4/5

The restaurant's signature dry pot is available in an impressive 12 different varieties, featuring ingredients such as seafood, squid, pork intestines, and more. We opted for the Dry Pot Pork Ribs ($49.90 for Small, $76.80 for Large), which is kept sizzling throughout the meal on an induction cooker. The dish was boldly spiced with a generous mix of dried chillies and peppercorns, though we felt that the spice lacked fragrance. A wider ariety of default ingredients, like sweet potato noodles and mushrooms, would have enhanced the dish. When you are almost done with the Dry Pot, you can request the service staff add extra broth and transform it into a hotpot. Additional hotpot ingredients are available to be ordered.

IMG_1244
Spicy Chicken Cubes 3/5

We wrapped up the meal with the classic Spicy Chicken Cubes ($28), a dish generously loaded with dried chillies. While the chicken cubes had a decent crunch, the flavours were less robust than we had hoped.
