Foxhole Cafe @ The Midtown Hougang – Cozy Hideout With Quality All-Day Brunch fare And Coffee From The Pourover Bar

FoxholeCafe1

Nestled within the Hougang residences at The Midtown, previously known as Hougang Plaza, The Foxhole Cafe occupies a double storey unit, greeting customers with the smell of coffee from the espresso bar and a dessert display counter filled with freshly baked goods on the first storey. Decor is kept simple for the main seating area tucked away on the second storey that can accommodate up to 30 people, with minimalistic furnishings, an eye-catching hand-painted galaxy unicorn mural on one side of the wall, and a huge floor-to-ceiling window that allows ample lighting into the space for those instagrammable shots.

In collaboration with The Pourover Bar, The Foxhole Cafe serves a selection of quality filtered coffees brewed to perfection with specialty beans from Melbourne, Australia. Known for its wide selection of internationally championed single origin Ninety Plus specialty coffee beans, there is little wonder why The Pourover Bar has garnered a loyal following since its establishment in 2016. Furthermore, The Foxhole Cafe has also expanded its menu over the year, from a limited selection of light bites and cakes, to a larger variety of more substantial mains, such as burgers, pastas and udon bowls. Now you can satisfy your caffeine fix with quality coffee, teas from The 1872 Clipper Tea Co., as well as a wider selection of delectable yet instagrammable food offerings all under one roof.

Croissant Egg Benedict and Black Pepper Smoked Salmon 4/5

The Croissant Egg Benedict and Black Pepper Smoked Salmon ($15.90) features a large croissant that boasts a flaky crispy exterior and buttery softer insides, with a generous serving of smoked salmon slices sandwiched in between, garnished with specks of black pepper that present a balance of saltiness and peppery taste. Slice into the egg benedict and let the creamy yellow soak up the rest of the ingredients, imparting a subtle sweetness to the dish and giving the fillings more textural contrast against the silky smoked salmon and flaky croissant.

FoxholeCafe7
Signature Foxhole Hawaiian Beef Burger with Truffle Chips 4/5

The Signature Foxhole Hawaiian Beef Burger with Truffle Chips ($15.90) comes in a huge beef patty, pineapple slice, melted cheese and lettuce sandwiched in between soft burger buns. The beef done medium rare, boasts a soft texture and is well seasoned with salt and pepper, while the addition of the pineapple slice imparts a burst of refreshing juiciness and sweetness to the burger. The side of truffle chips boasts a subtle hint of truffle, while contributing an additional crunch to the dish.

FoxholeCafe9
Honey Garlic Prawn Udon Bowl 4.2/5

The Honey Garlic Prawn Udon Bowl ($16.90) features a bowl of thick udon noodles done al dente, and a colourful array of different ingredients carefully arranged on top, comprising of sweet corn, carrots, mushrooms, tofu and green peas. The highlight of the dish - honey glazed garlic prawns boast a perfect sweet-savoury balance as you bite into those juicy prawns. Slice into the onsen egg and let the runny yellow coat the rest of the ingredients.

FoxholeCafe4
Yakult Lover 3.8/5

Relive your childhood dreams with the Yakult Lover ($6.90) which is the signature drink of the cafe that seems to have been created for the social media. It comes in an instagrammable upsized Yakult bottle filled with yakult flavoured soda and a small mason jar served on a wooden tray. Although the familiar taste of the probiotic yoghurt drink is a refreshingly unique combination with the soda, the fizzy bubbly taste of the latter might be too overwhelming at some points. The drink further eased to a more welcoming balance as the ice melted towards the ends.

FoxholeCafe2

The Foxhole Cafe is the perfect cozy spot to provide a calming respite and chill over pastries and good coffee while people watching through the tall windows overlooking the grass field outside. With an established fan base of coffee lovers for the quality coffee from The Pourover Bar and introduction of a wider variety of quality food pegged at affordable prices, it is a noteworthy place that continuously set expectations and is definitely one not to be missed, especially if you're staying near the Hougang area.

Durian Ang Moh (卢克榴莲) @ Hougang Ave 4 - Ang Moh Vegetarian Blogger Turns Durian Seller

DurianAngMo11

I have known Luke from England (who has moved to Singapore about 10 years ago) as a Singapore vegetarian blogger who blogs at Hungry Ang Mo. Besides blogging about vegetarian food in Singapore, I also know about his love for durian. He is so passionate about the king of fruit that he has researched and written extensive about durian on his blog. Never in my wildest dream I would expect him to take his love for the fruit further to become a durian seller! Durian Ang Moh is partnership with Ah Teck the first honest durian seller he got to know. The stall is located at Blk 681 Hougang Ave 4.

DurianAngMo4

Not only can you buy and eat at the stall, Durian Ang Moh has also introduced delivery service. You can check out their facebook page to know the price daily and order by message them. If you order 3 boxes or more, delivery is free. If not, there is a minimum delivery fee of $15. Payment is by bank transfer.

DurianAngMo3

Currently the stall is selling Mao Shan Wang and the more premium "Black Gold" Mao Shan Wang Durian, Durian Ang Moh gets their durians from Malaysia, working with local Malaysians farmers who still farm durians the old-fashioned way. They are honest durian seller focus in bringing quality durians from old trees.

DurianAngMo9

DurianAngMo8

Visiting the stall with all those thorny fruit and their yellow flesh screaming at you, flooding your nostrils with the beautiful smell. I just have to put my camera aside and get my hands dirty to indulge in the creamy and bitter sweet flesh. These are indeed good quality durian.

Porky Bun (猪扒包) @ Seng Huat (成發) Coffee House (Hougang Central)

IMG_2938ed

After posting this cute little Porky Bun (猪扒包) on Instagram, many people has asked me where did I have this? Well, I think it is time for me to share it with my readers. This is sold at Seng Huat (成發) Coffee House at block 811 Hougang Central. The coffeeshop is located at the corner of block 811 Hougang Central just beside Hougang Mall. This cute porky bun is sold at the drink stall. It also sells Hong Kong style noodles which unfortunately did not look very appetizing.

IMG_2941ed
Original Pork Bun 4.2/5

I tried the Original Pork Bun ($3.50) which comes with a porky face bun slightly toasted with a black peppered seasoned pork patty in between. There is also cheese, mayonnaise and chilli sauce (optional) added to the bun. I was actually hoping for some greens to make the presentation even prettier. Anyway already full mark for the cuteness. Besides the pork patty, customers also have a choice of Chicken ($3.50), Ham & Egg ($2.80) or Bacon & Egg ($3.50).

IMG_2939ed

Seng Huat Coffee House also sells the bun in a set. The Original Pork Bun Set ($4.80) comes with a cup of coffee/tea, 2 soft boiled eggs and the porky bun. I feel it pretty value for money and the coffee made by the uncle was also not bad.

IMG_2937ed

This is the drink stall that is selling the cute and delicious Porky Bun (猪扒包). I have not seen it sold elsewhere in Singapore and this probably the first. It seems like it has aroused some interests in social media. Hopefully there is not going to be a crowd in my next visit and I need not queue up for hours to eat this again.

Sergeant Chicken Rice @ Kopitiam Hougang One

IMG_0638ed

Can we get a good plate of Hainanese Chicken Rice at food court? The answer is Yes you can because Sergeant Kiang is back at the food court scene once again but this time with Kopitiam instead of the other big food court brand to impart and teach his chicken rice recipe to the staff so we can get a plate of delicious and succulent Hainanese chicken rice on our table. I am glad that Kopitiam has brought back Sergean Kiang and strike a partnership.

IMG_0641ed

So who is Sergeant Kiang? Well in short he is the chef that created the famous ChatterBox Chicken Rice at Mandarin Hotel, subsequently Sergeant Chicken at Rasa Singapura and Jiang Ji Chicken Rice. After several different ventures that did not really materialized, it is great to see him back in the food scene imparting his culinary skill and recipe to the next generation who is keen to learn and continue the hawker heritage. I have to thank Ian for introducing me to one of the godfathers of Hainanese Chicken Rice in Singapore.

IMG_0635ed
Roasted Chicken 4.2/5

I have not eaten the Chatterbox chicken rice because I am not willing to pay big bucks for a hawker dish and neither do I have the chance to try Jiang Ji Chicken Rice before it pulled down its shutter. Nevertheless, thanks to Sergeant Kiang unselfishness in passing down his recipe, I now can savour this tender and succulent Hainanese Chicken at affordable food court price. Compare to the Roasted Chicken, I still preferred the white one because of the layer of jelly like skin. This is simply delicacy that melted in the mouth. And not to forget the special blend of chilli and garlic dip that further accentuated the whole enjoyment.

IMG_0640ed
Char Siew 3.5/5

The Char Siew on the hand was rather average. The sweetness of the char siew was lacked down by the missing charred flavour. Decent but not outstanding.

As Sergeant Kiang is moving around the different Kopitiam food courts to teach and impart his recipe to the different chicken rice stalls, he may not be always at the Hougang One Kopitiam. If you want to have a delicious plate of chicken rice, just look out for the sergeant brand at any of the Kopitiam chicken rice stalls. That means they are using Sergeant Kiang's recipe. Do also note that he has left the other big brand food court and the recipe there may have changed.

Sin Heng Kee Porridge @ Hougang Street 61

IMG_0615ed

The best food to have during a cold rainy day is a bowl of congee that is both comforting and keeps the body warm. I am glad that there is a popular congee place near my home in Hougang. Located at the corner of block 685, Sin Heng Kee Porridge occupies the floor area of a coffee shop selling only porridge and drink. They must be selling a lot of congee to be able to pay the rental for such a huge premises.

IMG_0620ed
Signature Porridge 4/5

Sin Heng Kee Porridge serves the Cantonese style porridge which is the gooey type. I tried the Signature Porridge which was flavourful and smooth. You know sometime the congee is served bland and you need to add in your own seasoning. I did not need to do so at Sin Heng Kee Porridge. I only wish that the youtiao is served crispy. A look at the picture you will know this is not the best youtiao to go with the congee.

IMG_0624ed
Claypot Frog Leg Porridge 4/5

Not only does Sin Heng Kee Porridge sells the Cantonese style porridge, it also offers Claypot Frog Leg Porridge in the menu. I did not realise this is on the menu until the recent visit. I tried the ginger and scallions frog leg porridge which was light, smooth and comforting. I also like the fact that the frog leg came in big chunks allowing me to enjoy the sweet and tender meat.

IMG_0623ed
Raw Fish 2.5/5

I love having Raw Fish but quite disappointed to say the one served at Sin Heng Kee Porridge was not up to expectation. The bad knife skill spoilt the texture of the sashimi. It has a rough texture that needed to work my teeth harder to break it down.

If I am to visit Sin Heng Kee Porridge again, I would skip the raw fish and go for the congee only. I did notice a lot of people ordering the sliced abalone instead of the raw fish during my visit. May I will try the sliced abalone in my next trip here.

Xiao Di Fried Prawn Noodle @ Serangoon North Ave 1

IMG_0978ed

So I have finally made my way down to Xiao Di Fried Prawn Noodle to taste this young hawker's Fried Hokkien Mee. The young hawker Xiao Di or Terrence has been getting quite a bit of media coverage and even my friends who have tried his fried hokkien mee has beeen raving about it. Even to the extend that some of them have proclaimed it as probably the best fried hokkien mee.

IMG_0975ed
Fried Hokkien Mee 4.8/5

The Fried Hokkien Mee here is of the wet and gooey version. The plate of delicious fried hokkien mee comes in a medley of yellow noodle, rice vermicelli, egg, beansprout, sliced pork belly, prawn, squid, garlic and pork lard. All these beautiful flavours are binded together with a thick and robust prawn stock well absorbed by the yellow noodles and rice vermicelli (thick beehoon).

IMG_0977ed
Fried Hokkien Mee 4.8/5

Besides the flavourful noodles that is well infused with the prawn stock, the other characteristic of the fragrant plate of fried hokkien mee is the garlic and pork lard that further accentuated the flavour and aroma of the whole dish. Squeezed a bit of the lime juice and ate with the specially made chilli sauce to fully enjoy this delish plate of fried hokkien mee.

After finally trying the fried hokkien mee by Xiao Di. I have to agreed with my friends that this is indeed very delicious and probably one of the best fried hokkien mee in Singapore now.

Pu Tien Xing Hua Cuisine @ Hougang Mall

IMG_5402

(Photo taken with Canon IXUS 120IS )

I stay in Hougang but I seldom eat in Hougang. It is a kind of contradicting isn't it? Anyway, cut the story short, I was at Hougang Mall looking for lunch and I decided to dine at the Mei Shi Mei Ke Food Court by Kopitiam at level 4.

IMG_5399

The decor of the food court has a very chinese theme.

IMG_5400

The calligraphy on the windows featuring nursery rhymes impressed me most.

Xin Hua Lor Mee 4.2/5

The headache about eating at food court is that there are so many choices. After I have recce the place, I decided to have the Xin Hua Lor Mee ($4). I like Pu Tien Restaurant's Lor Mee and I think this stall's lor mee is quite comparable. For a mere $4 and the portion I am getting, I find it value for money. I like to add a bit of vinegar to give the dish extra flavours. I am sure I will return for another plate of their hearty lor mee.

Sin Heng Kee Porridge @ Hougang Street 61

Chanced upon this new eatery near Hougang bowling centre that served pretty nice and smooth porridge at a decent price of $3 to $3.50 per bowl. Adding egg will cost an addition 30 cents. They have a huge menu offering about 20 different types of porridge.

Laksania @ Hougang Mall

Hougang Mall has changed quite a bit since the last time I viisited it. They are more F&B in the mall now. On the fourth floor, there is a new Mei Shi Mei Ke 美食美客 foodcourt by Kopitiam Group. Laksania caught my attention as it offered a variety of laksa. There have Singapore, Kelantan, Penang, Sarawak and Johor laksa.

I had the Johor laksa which came with yellow noodle and thin bee hoon. The laksa soup is quite similar to our Singapore version. However the laksa ingredients it used egg plants, long beans and fish ball which is different from the Singapore version.
