Yang Ming Seafood (扬名海鲜) @ Bishan Street 11 - Their Lobster Chee Cheong Fan Is A Best Try

YangMingSeafood7

Having seen a lot of postings from my foodie friends, I have to make my way to Yang Ming Seafood (扬名海鲜) at Bishan Street 11. The zichar place is located in a coffeeshop among the HDB estate. You will notice we ordered mostly seafood dishes because this is their forte.

YangMingSeafood2
Deep Fried Sakura Prawns 4.5/5

An excellent starter to kick start the night is the Deep Fried Sakura Prawns ($10). It is crispy and crunchy, with the sweetness of the sakura prawns coming through with its bite.

YangMingSeafood9
Steamed Baby Sotong 4.2/5

Usually, I have deep-fried baby sotong, but after trying Steamed Baby Sotong ($19), this probably will be the preferred method of cooking for me in the future. It allows me to appreciate the baby squid's tender texture, complemented by the ginger and soya sauce.

YangMingSeafood12
Chicken Scallop Soup 3.8/5

Next, we have the Chicken Scallop Soup ($68). It comes with the whole chicken that is cooked until fork tender. Unfortunately, I could not detect the scallop's flavour in the soup.

YangMingSeafood15
Steamed Flounder Fish 4/5

A dish that I requested is the Steamed Flounder ($99). I thought it is rare to see such fish served at a zichar place. For those not familiar with flounder, the flesh is firm with soft bone like stingray.

YangMingSeafood7
Lobster Chee Cheong Fan 4.2/5

The highlight for the night has to be the Lobster Chee Cheong Fan ($88). It is a dish my friend shared with the owner what he had in Hong Kong, and after much R&D, the chef created this dish which becomes a hit with a lot of foodies. The highlight is the silky chee cheong fan accentuated by the fried shallot, fried garlic and premium soya sauce. However, my friend who has tried the dish before felt that it lacked the crustacean's flavour this time.

YangMingSeafood22
Garlic La La 4.5/5

Plump and sweet is the Garlic La La ($45) topped with aromatic garlic. When you have a fresh ingredient, there isn't any need for fancy cooking allowing the ingredient to shine.

YangMingSeafood18
Salt-baked Crab 4.5/5

The Salt-bake Crab ($100) is another dish we enjoyed a lot. You can see the thick layer of crab roe from the photo that just send me to umami heaven.

Denzy Gelato @ Bishan Street 11 – Awarded As "Singapore's Best Gelato" With Unique And Adventurous Flavours

DenzyGelato4

Located in the heart of Bishan, new and upcoming gelateria, Denzy Gelato was announced as the winner of the inaugural Singapore Gelato Championship on 28 August 2019, earning the prestigious title of "Singapore's Best Gelato". Helmed by founder Damien, he is trained the art of gelato creation in Italy and uses only quality ingredients in his unique handmade ice cream creations. Expect exclusive gelato flavours such as the Persian Prince, Elderflower Mojito, Ruby Chocolate & Raspberries, Basil, and Cereal Milk - adventurous and distinctive flavours which were inspired by this time overseas.

DenzyGelato3
Single Scoop ($3.60) + cone ($0.50) 4/5

We went for the award-winning flavour - Pear, Ginger and Ginger Flower. The gelato has a stronger ginger flavour on a cone, which has a light pear fruit touch and floral finish. Crediting part of his imagination as a time in his youth while observing his father use the ginger flower to prepare Chinese rojak for their customers, owner Damien was determined to create this unique flavour based on exotic local ingredients and eventually won the competition with his innovative craftsmanship and exquisite creation.

DenzyGelato5
Waffles ($5) + 1 scoop ($3) 4.2/5

The quaint 30-seater gelateria also offers waffles, coffee and assorted tea as well. Don't miss out on their waffles when you're here! Extremely crispy outside and fluffy within, the warm waffles is an absolute enjoyment to go with their ice cream. We went for our favourite flavours - a double scoop of the Persian Prince and Skinny Dark Chocolate Sorbet.

The Persian Prince features a combination of almond and saffron (one of the most revered spices in the world). A unique Italy-inspired flavour which you probably cannot find elsewhere in Singapore, it has a creamy, nutty taste. The almonds are also stone-grounded for 10 hours prior, adding to the authenticity of the flavour.

Another signature flavour is the Skinny Dark Chocolate Sorbet, which is a lighter, and more refreshing version to the creamier Dark Chocolate Gelato. It may appeal more to people who favour the non-creamy and delectably light texture of the sorbet while retaining the richness of the chocolate flavour.

DenzyGelato2
Affogato ($6) 4/5

Diners may choose any gelato flavour to go with the Affogato, giving them a chance to create unique flavours to their likings. We opted for the Whiskey & Salted Pecan Brittle to go with the bitterness of the coffee, which gave the affogato a little more of a kick, while the pecan brittles added an addictive crunch.

DenzyGelato6

New gelato flavours are invented every week to keep things fresh and exciting, and the exclusive gelato flavours available only at Denzy Gelato promises a unique and unforgettable experience for all who patronise them. Together with waffles, coffee and tea available, it serves as the perfect dessert chill spot.

Royal J's Premium Taste @ Bishan Street 11 - Bringing Their Signature Fried Porridge to Bishan

RoyalJPremium1

I am glad to know that John Ng of Royal J has opened a new restaurant at Bishan Street 11 called Royal J's Premium Taste. I first get to know John Ng when he opened his first stall at Macpherson Road selling the signature Fried Porridge. He then relocated to a coffeshop in Foch Road known as Royal J Seafood. Now with the latest restaurant bring the fried porridge and other cooked dishes to the folks in Bishan.

RoyalJPremium2
Signature Fried Porridge 4.5/5

A must have at the Royal J's Premium Taste is their Signature Fried Porridge. I am glad that the consistency is there. Plain porridge is fried in a wok with the addition of cuttlefish, yam cubes, dried shrimps and pork lard, finished in a flavourful dark brown sauce to hold the dish together.

RoyalJPremium4
Signature Kampong Chicken 4/5

Only available on weekends is the Signature Kampong Chicken ($18 for small). The poached chicken is soft and tender. I like the fried garlic that is sprinkled on top of it, giving it a nice lift in aroma.

RoyalJPremium8
Green Dragon Chive 3.5/5

For the greens, we had the Green Dragon Chive ($10) which is quite commonly available in Chinese restaurant nowadays. Simply stir fried, I enjoyed its nature flavour and crunchiness.

RoyalJPremium5
Yin and Yang Tofu 3/5

The Yin and Yang Tofu ($12) is a 2-in-1 dish. It comes with a bed of steamed egg in a delicious broth with some minced meat and 2 pieces of tofu. Unfortunately I did not like the type of tofu used. It's the firmer type like tau kwa.

RoyalJPremium12
Special Lemon Fish with Beehoon 3.5/5

Lastly we tried the Special Lemon Fish with Beehoon ($26). It tasted a bit Thai inspired from the sour lemon sauce. However I felt it needed a bit of that chilli fiery to give it a bit more punch.

Ding Ji Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle @ Bishan Street 22 - A Hearty Bowl of Fish Maw Soup With Noodle

IMG_1001ed

I was introduced to Ding Ji Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle at Bishan Street after hearing it from Maureen aka MissTamchiak when she discovered the stall. Things then went viral and queue started to form at the stall with waiting time up to 2 hours. The good thing is that this place is opened around the clock, 24 hour. So I was able to check out the place in the wee hours when it was not as crowded.

IMG_1003ed
Fish Maw Soup Noodle 4/5

I had the most expensive item on the menu which is the what I came for, the Fish Maw Soup with Noodle ($8). The bowl of noodle comes with a lot of ingredients such as fish ball, dumpling, pork slices, liver, mushrooms, egg and fish maw.

IMG_1007ed
Fish Maw Soup Noodle 4/5

Besides the generous amount of ingredients, the other highlight is the robust soup. The soup based was sweet and came with a subtle taste of Ti Poh or dried sole fish. That provided the soul for the bowl. While the Seng Kee version with its strong Ti Poh flavoured soup hits you like a tank, the version here is more gentle and it a way more balanced. So it really is subject to individual preference and palate.

IMG_1012ed
Bak Chor Mee Dry 2.5/5

Since I have came all the way to check out the stall, I might as well made the best of my trip. Hence I ordered another bowl of Bak CHor Mee Dry to try. Unfortunately it was a disappointment. The chilli and vinegar sauce did not carry any weight at all to match the noodles. It was rather lacklustre.

If you like to check out the stall, I would recommend going for the fish maw soup as this is the highlight here. The other noodle dishes are ready so so. To be fair, don't let the waiting time and personal preference distort your judgement. To me this is a hearty and comfortable bowl of fish maw soup that I have enjoyed and I would go back again for it.

Chang Thai @ Bishan Street 11

IMG_5036ed

I have always like to seek out neighbourhood eateries in the heartland as I find a charm in them offering comfort home cooked food while not burning a hole in the wallet. One such new eatery servicing up authentic Thai cuisine is Chang Thai at Bishan Street 11. The eatery is founded by 3 buddies in their 20s to 30, with a native Thai chef who has been cooking since the age of 12.

IMG_5012ed
Lemon Grass Drink and Thai Milk Green Tea 4/5

Dinner started with some drinks. We tried the Lemon Grass Drink ($2.50) and Thai Milk Green Tea ($2.50). The Thai Milk Green Tea is a good change from the staple Thai Ice Tea. Like its counterpart, this is a sweet and milky beverage which will come in handy for fire fighting if the food is too fiery.

IMG_5014ed
Pandan Chicken 4/5

Before the mains were served, we started with some light appetizers. I am not a big fan of Pandan Chicken ($2.50/pc) because usually it turned out to be too oily for my liking. I have to applaud the execution here. The chicken was not overly oily, tender and still came with a hint of the pandan fragrant.

IMG_5022ed
Prawn Cake 4/5

Moving on we tried the Prawn Cake ($5.80 for 3pc). Made from scratch the prawn cake has a crispy thin batter that is well complemented with the prawn paste inside. Most places the prawn paste are mixed with a lot of flour and you can't even taste any prawn inside but this is not the case at Chang Thai.

IMG_5024ed
Fish Cake 4/5

Another look easy but painstaking preparation is the Fish Cake ($5.80 for 3pc). Fish meat is removed from the whole fish, seasoned with Thai herbs and spices before shaping them into shape. Slightly crispy on the exterior with bouncy fish meat inside, an enjoyable appetiser to kick start the meal.

IMG_5027ed
Mango Salad 3.5/5

I like Thai salad because it encompasses all the staple flavours of Thai cuisine in one dish with its rich and robust flavours. The Mango Salad ($6) while I appreciate the thought of being different, giving it a more fruity note, I missed that sharpness in flavour I was seeking out in Thai cuisine.

IMG_5015ed
Beef Noodle Soup 4/5

The Beef Noodle Soup ($7) reminded me of those street hawker stalls I visited in Bangkok. We have skipped the noodles as we are saving our stomach for more delicious food. I am not sure what cut of beef they used but it has a nice layer of fat and it literally melted in the mouth. What stood out for me is the robustness of the soup that is packed with slurping goodness.

IMG_5018ed
Pad Thai 3.8/5

A staple Thai dish is the Pad Thai ($6/$9). For the price, the portion is definitely value for money. It seems like the rest of the group enjoyed the noodle but I thought it was lacking the wok hei aroma.

IMG_5020ed
Steamed Seabass with Lemongrass 4.5/5

I will usually order the steamed fish in spicy and sour sauce but with the recommendation I decided to try the Steamed Seabass with Lemongrass ($25). I was a great recommendation. The lemongrass seems to accentuate the flavour of the fish instead of overpowering it.

IMG_5025ed
Garlic Honey Chicken 4.2/5

Probably a signature dish or soon to be at Chang Thai is the Garlic Honey Chicken ($6/$8). This may looked simple but its actually pretty good with many different components coming together as one. The tender and juicy chicken, the light crispy batter, the aroma from the garlic and the honey glaze all working harmoniously as one.

IMG_5030ed
Tapioca with Coconut Milk 4/5

The Tapioca with Coconut Milk ($4) was nicely steamed to a soft texture but yet still retaining a bite. The coconut milk further enhanced the enjoyment.

IMG_5033ed
Red Ruby with Jackfruit 4.2/5

If you are a fan of red ruby, then you got to try Red Ruby with Jackfruit ($5) from Chang Thai. The red ruby is homemade and hence it was not overly starchy with a nice crunchy bite. The jackfruit gave the dessert an additional fruity finishing.

IMG_5035ed
Mango Sticky Rice 4/5

One of my favourite Thai desserts is the Mango Sticky Rice ($6). The choice of mango is very important and the glutinous rice must be sticky and moist. I think Chang Thai has got this right.

Overall I felt that the food at Chang Thai is hearty and family oriented. I actually left the place wondering if I just had Thai food? I realized I did not get the fiery rush of spiciness throughout the meal. I regret not ordering the more spicy item on the menu which somehow made my review incomplete. I look forward to my next visit to check out the other spicier items.
