Sha Xian Snacks (沙县小吃) @ West Coast Plaza - Affordable Fujian-Style Comfort Food 24 Hours a Day

ShaXianSnacks-3

Located in the basement of West Coast Plaza, Sha Xian Snacks (沙县小吃) is a casual spot serving classic Fujian-style snacks and comforting rice and noodle dishes. With several outlets around Singapore, the brand offers a convenient option for a quick, affordable meal, and the West Coast Plaza outlet stands out for being open 24 hours, making it especially handy for late-night meals or an early breakfast. We tried a few of the rice and noodle sets, which are generally generous in portion and reasonably priced.

ShaXianSnacks-13
Pork-Bone Wonton Soup 4/5

The Classic Trio Set ($8.80) comes with Pork-Bone Wonton Soup and Fragrant Scallion Oil Noodles with Braised Egg, offering a satisfying combination of soup and noodles in one set. The Pork-Bone Wonton Soup comes with plump wontons filled with juicy minced pork. The wonton skin is thin enough without being overly delicate, while the pork filling has a pleasant savoury flavour. The accompanying pork-bone broth is light and comforting, making this an easy dish to have alongside the noodles.

ShaXianSnacks-7

ShaXianSnacks-16
Fragrant Scallion Oil Noodles, Braised Egg 3.5/5

The Fragrant Scallion Oil Noodles are tossed in aromatic scallion oil and a savoury, braising-style sauce, giving the noodles a deep, slightly sweet, savoury flavour. The noodles have a decent bite and are well coated with the sauce, while a whole braised egg adds another layer of richness to the dish. It is a simple combination, but it works well for a quick, filling meal.

ShaXianSnacks-26
Sauerkraut Fish Rice Set 3.8/5

The Sauerkraut Fish Rice Set ($12.80) comes with tender slices of fish in a tangy and spicy broth, accompanied by sauerkraut and cabbage. The broth has a noticeable sour, spicy kick, and the sauerkraut adds a characteristic tang that helps cut through the soup’s richness. The fish slices are reasonably tender, while the cabbage adds some texture and sweetness. Served with steamed rice, it makes for a hearty, satisfying meal, and the portion is fairly generous for the price.

ShaXianSnacks-3

ShaXianSnacks-18
Sichuan Boiled Beef Rice Set 3.8/5

For those who enjoy a bit of heat, the Sichuan Boiled Beef Rice Set ($11.80) offers tender-ish slices of beef in a spicy, mala-style broth. The beef may not be the most tender, but it comes in generous portions. More importantly, the broth delivers a good mala kick without completely overwhelming the dish. The steamed rice also helps balance the spiciness and makes the dish more substantial.

ShaXianSnacks-28
Braised Chicken Rice Set 3.5/5

For something milder, the Braised Chicken Rice Set ($9.80) is a straightforward option featuring braised chicken pieces served with onions and capsicum over rice. The chicken is tender and carries a savoury braised flavour, while the onions add a touch of sweetness. The capsicum, however, could have been cooked a little longer, as it retained a raw, crunchy texture. Nevertheless, this is a decent choice for those looking for something non-spicy and uncomplicated.

ShaXianSnacks-23

Overall, Sha Xian Snacks may not be the destination to visit if you are looking for refined or top-notch Chinese cuisine, but it does a decent job at what it sets out to do — serving affordable, filling and comforting food without much fuss. The portions are generous for the price point, with most of the rice and noodle sets hovering around the $10 to $13 range. The West Coast Plaza outlet’s 24-hour operation is another major plus, especially for local residents or anyone looking for a late-night meal. Whether it is a bowl of wonton soup and noodles, a spicy Sichuan beef rice set, or a comforting plate of braised chicken rice, Sha Xian Snacks offers plenty of fuss-free options for a quick, wallet-friendly meal.

Pulsii French Bistro @ Tras Street - $19.80 Steak Frites Lunch Special

PulsiiAug2026-14

Nuzzled among the heritage shophouses of Tras Street, Pulsii French Bistro is a chic yet unpretentious dining spot that brings a touch of Parisian bistro charm to the edge of the CBD. Helmed by Chef Daisuke Yoshikawa, whose culinary experience includes time in Michelin-starred Japanese kitchens, the restaurant presents a menu that marries classic French techniques with Japanese ingredients and a distinctly modern approach.

The menu ranges from approachable small plates to more substantial mains, with dishes showcasing Chef Daisuke’s precision and affinity for open-fire cooking. For the weekday crowd, Pulsii also offers a 2-course set lunch at $20 or $35, making it an attractive option for a leisurely yet reasonably priced meal.

One of the biggest draws, however, is the Steak Frites Lunch Special at just $19.80++. Available from Monday to Saturday, only 20 portions are offered each day, so early arrival is recommended.

PulsiiAug2026-4
Bread and Yuzu Cheese Spread 3.5/5

We started with some Bread and Yuzu Cheese Spread, a simple yet pleasant bite to ease into the meal. The bread provides a soft, comforting base while the yuzu-infused cheese spread adds a gentle citrusy brightness, giving the otherwise creamy spread a refreshing lift.

PulsiiAug2026-6
Shima Aji Carpaccio 4.5/5

The Shima Aji Carpaccio ($24) makes a light, refreshing starter. Thick slices of Japanese Shima Aji are served with ponzu and mustard vinaigrette, pairing the fish’s naturally clean, subtly sweet flavour with pleasant acidity. The Shima Aji has a firm yet delicate texture, while shaved fennel stem and microcress add freshness and a slight crunch. The mix of Japanese ingredients with French-style presentation gives the dish a refined yet uncomplicated character, keeping the quality of the fish as the focus.

PulsiiAug2026-19

PulsiiAug2026-25
French Onion Gratin Soup 4.2/5

A comforting classic, the French Onion Gratin Soup ($16) is built around onions slowly cooked down until deeply caramelised, sweet, and jammy. The resulting broth is rich and intensely savoury, with the natural sweetness of the onions shining through. Topped with toasted bread and a generous layer of melted cheese, the soup delivers plenty of textural contrast — from the bubbling, gooey cheese to the bread that soaks up the deeply flavoured broth. It is hearty without being overly complicated, and certainly one for those who enjoy the comforting flavours of traditional French bistro cooking.

PulsiiAug2026-33
Lamb Skewer 4/5

The Lamb Skewer ($20) takes a more rustic direction, with the lamb cooked directly over an open woodfire flame. The high heat creates a nicely charred exterior while helping to retain the meat’s natural juices. The smoky notes from the woodfire add depth, giving the lamb a robust grilled character without overwhelming its natural flavour. Served with Japanese egg yolk, the yolk’s richness provides a creamy accompaniment to the smoky lamb, making this a satisfying small plate to share.

PulsiiAug2026-44
Japanese Kinmedai 4.2/5

For the mains, the Japanese Kinmedai ($58) showcases Chef Daisuke’s Japanese-French approach particularly well. Kinmedai, a prized deep-sea Japanese fish, is known for its rich, fatty flesh and delicate texture. Here, the fish is cooked over an open woodfire, allowing the skin to develop a beautifully charred exterior while keeping the flesh tender and moist. It is served with savoy cabbage tapenade and a dry vermouth cream sauce, which brings a combination of earthy, vegetal and creamy flavours to the plate. The smoky char from the fire complements the fish’s richness, while the sauce adds another layer of savouriness without masking the Kinmedai’s delicate character.

PulsiiAug2026-49

PulsiiAug2026-56
Steak Frites 4.2/5

Pulsii’s standout value proposition is its Steak Frites Lunch Special at $19.80++. Available Monday to Saturday at lunch, the special includes a 250g steak, crispy fries, and a seasonal green salad with Pulsii’s signature dressing. Only 20 portions are available each day, first come, first served, until sold out.

For the price, the portion is particularly generous. The steak is cooked over an open flame, leaving a nicely seared, charred exterior while keeping the centre tender and juicy. The open-fire cooking also lends the meat a subtle smokiness that works particularly well with the classic bistro-style preparation. The accompanying shoestring fries are crisp and golden, providing the essential crunchy counterpart to the juicy steak. A fresh seasonal salad rounds things off, adding some acidity and freshness to cut through the richness of the meat and fries.

PulsiiAug2026-57
Mille-Feuille with Vanilla Ice Cream 4.2/5

To end, the Mille-Feuille with Vanilla Ice Cream ($15) offers a classic French dessert with a satisfying play on textures. The puff pastry is baked until crisp, buttery and caramelised, creating delicate layers that shatter with each bite. Sandwiched between the pastry are smooth, creamy layers that contrast beautifully with the pastry’s crispness. Served alongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream, the dessert gains another dimension as the cold, creamy ice cream slowly melts into the warm pastry. The combination of buttery pastry, creamy filling, and vanilla makes for a comforting, indulgent finish without feeling excessively heavy.

For those working around the CBD, the $20 or $35 2-course set lunches make Pulsii worth considering for a weekday meal. At the same time, the $19.80++ Steak Frites is particularly hard to overlook for its generous 250g portion and limited daily offering.

With its stylish setting, approachable pricing and a menu that blends French and Japanese influences, Pulsii French Bistro offers a refreshing dining option along Tras Street — whether you’re dropping by for a quick business lunch or settling in for a more leisurely meal.

Tim Ho Wan @ Westgate - Celebrates Singapore’s Food Culture with Flavours of Singapore Dim Sum

TimHoWanNDP26-17

This National Day, Tim Ho Wan pays tribute to Singapore’s rich and diverse food culture with its limited-time Flavours of Singapore menu, taking familiar local favourites and giving them an inventive Hong Kong dim sum twist.

Available from 21 July to 31 August 2026 at all Tim Ho Wan outlets islandwide, the menu features five creations inspired by flavours Singaporeans grew up with, from laksa and bak chor mee to orh nee and luncheon meat fried rice. While the combinations may sound unconventional at first, the menu is a playful meeting point between two beloved food cultures.

TimHoWanNDP26-2
Laksa Seafood Dumplings 叻沙海鲜饺 4.2/5

The Laksa Seafood Dumplings 叻沙海鲜饺 ($7.90 for 3pcs) deliver an appetising spicy kick right from the start. Hand-wrapped with a striking butterfly pea-infused skin, the azure-hued dumplings are filled with succulent shrimp and sweet scallops. The dish stands out for the laksa broth that accompanies the dumplings. Rich and creamy with coconut milk and aromatic spices, the broth carries the distinctive fragrance of rempah with a gentle heat that lingers on the palate. The delicate seafood filling works nicely with the robust laksa base, creating a dish that feels both familiar and distinctly different from the usual dim sum offering.

TimHoWanNDP26-14
‘Bak Chor’ Rice Rolls 肉脞皱皮肠粉 4.2/5

Of all the creations, the ‘Bak Chor’ Rice Rolls 肉脞皱皮肠粉 ($9.50) were perhaps the one I was most sceptical about initially. After all, combining silky Hong Kong-style cheong fun with the flavours of Singapore’s bak chor mee sounds like an unusual pairing. Yet, it surprisingly works. The smooth rice rolls are dressed with tangy black vinegar and homemade chilli sauce, then topped with savoury minced pork, braised mushrooms and, of course, crispy pork lard. The combination hits many of the familiar notes of a good bowl of bak chor mee — tangy, spicy, savoury and deeply umami. For me, the vinegar kick made the connection work. That sharp tang cuts through the richness of the minced pork and crispy lard, while the soft rice rolls provide a completely different texture from the usual noodles. It is an inventive take that retains the character of bak chor mee without simply recreating the dish.

TimHoWanNDP26-8

TimHoWanNDP26-19
‘Orh Nee’ Salted Egg Sesame Ball 芋泥金沙煎堆 4.2/5

Sesame balls are a staple at Hong Kong dim sum restaurants, and Tim Ho Wan gives this familiar favourite a local makeover with the ‘Orh Nee’ Salted Egg Sesame Ball 芋泥金沙煎堆 ($7.50 for 3pcs). The golden sesame-coated glutinous rice balls have a delightfully chewy exterior, giving way to a smooth and velvety taro paste inspired by the classic Teochew dessert. At the centre is a luscious, molten salted egg yolk filling, adding a rich savoury note against the yam’s natural sweetness. The combination is particularly enjoyable for those who like the sweet-savoury contrast of salted egg yolk. The fragrant sesame coating, chewy glutinous rice, creamy taro and molten salted egg come together in layers, making this a fitting end to the meal or a sweet bite to share.

TimHoWanNDP26-22
XO Fried Rice with Bacon & Luncheon Meat 培根午餐肉XO炒饭 4.2/5

Even the humble fried rice gets a Singaporean spin with the XO Fried Rice with Bacon & Luncheon Meat 培根午餐肉XO炒饭 ($13.90). Fragrant rice is wok-fried with Tim Ho Wan’s house-concocted XO sauce, giving every grain a savoury depth and subtle spicy seafood umami. Generous pieces of bacon and luncheon meat add saltiness and a hearty bite, while the XO sauce ties it all together with complex seafood notes. It is familiar and comforting, but with a distinctly more robust profile. The luncheon meat and bacon also add a nostalgic touch, making this a rather homely fried rice that works well as a sharing dish alongside the dim sum.

TimHoWanNDP26-26

TimHoWanNDP26-30
Baked Black Pepper Roasted Duck Bun 酥皮焗黑椒烧鸭包 4/5

Tim Ho Wan’s renowned baked buns also get a limited-time makeover with the Baked Black Pepper Roasted Duck Bun 酥皮焗黑椒烧鸭包 ($9.50 for 3pcs). The signature golden, buttery pastry gives way to a savoury roasted duck filling generously coated in the chef’s black pepper sauce. The crisp, slightly sweet crust contrasts nicely with the tender duck inside, while the black pepper adds aromatic warmth that builds with every bite. Compared to the classic baked char siu bun, this version is more savoury and peppery, with the roasted duck giving the filling a deeper, meatier flavour. It is a satisfying variation that should appeal to fans of both Tim Ho Wan’s signature baked buns and Singapore’s love for bold, peppery flavours.

Tim Ho Wan’s Flavours of Singapore menu is an interesting exploration of how two food cultures can come together without losing their individual identities. Rather than simply adding local ingredients to existing dim sum, the menu draws inspiration from the flavours, textures and nostalgia associated with some of Singapore’s most recognisable dishes.

Milli Sky Dining & Bar @ National Gallery - Unveils Tingkat Afternoon Tea and National Day Specials

MilliAfternoonTea59

Perched high above the city, Milli Sky Dining & Bar will be launching an Afternoon Tea experience from 10 August 2026, alongside a pair of National Day specials that weave in familiar local flavours. Staying true to its sky-high setting, the new Tingkat Teatime takes on a nostalgic yet elevated approach, presenting a four-tier selection inspired by Singapore’s culinary heritage.

MilliAfternoonTea52
Tingkat Teatime 4/5

MilliAfternoonTea12

MilliAfternoonTea33

Served in a traditional four-tier tingkat carrier, the Teatime Set ($68 per pax) offers a thoughtful progression of savoury and sweet bites. The first tier sets the tone with a duo of Popiah Tartlet and Otak Toast. The popiah tartlet cleverly reimagines the classic fresh spring roll into a crisp, bite-sized shell filled with familiar flavours. At the same time, the otak toast delivers a punch of spice and aromatics atop a crisp base, making it a comforting yet playful start.

Moving on to the second tier, the White Pepper Crab Spring Roll stands out with its light, crispy exterior encasing a filling that carries the signature warmth of white pepper. The seasoning is well-balanced, allowing the crab’s natural sweetness to shine while adding just enough heat to keep things interesting.

MilliAfternoonTea17

MilliAfternoonTea22

The third tier features a local staple — Chicken Rice with Roasted Chicken. During our visit, it was served as a chicken rice ball, offering a compact and convenient take on the beloved dish. The rice was fragrant and well-seasoned, while the roasted chicken retained a tender bite with a lightly crisped skin. While the presentation may vary, the essence of the dish remains rooted in its comforting familiarity.

Rounding off the experience is the fourth tier, an Assortment of Traditional Kuehs. Expect a medley of textures and flavours, from soft and chewy to lightly sweet, providing a nostalgic finish that ties back to Singapore’s rich heritage of local desserts.

MilliAfternoonTea67
Ayam Penyet Buah Keluak

In celebration of National Day, Milli presents the Ayam Penyet Buah Keluak ($22), a hearty dish that brings together Malay and Peranakan influences. The whole fried chicken leg is crispy on the outside while remaining tender and juicy within. What elevates the dish is the buah keluak element, lending a deep, earthy richness that complements the aromatic spices. Served with fragrant steamed white rice, achar, and sambal, it is a well-rounded plate that satisfies both in flavour and portion size. The sambal adds a spicy kick, while the achar provides a refreshing contrast, making it a complete and satisfying meal.

Completing the National Day offerings is the Red and White Milli ($26), a visually striking cocktail inspired by the colours of the Singapore flag. Built on a Gin & Tonic base, it incorporates local flavours through a pandan-coconut foam, adding a fragrant and slightly creamy dimension to the drink. Finished with an orchid garnish, the cocktail is light, refreshing, and fittingly celebratory.

Milli Sky Dining & Bar’s new offerings blend nostalgia and creativity, presenting familiar local flavours in a refreshed format. The Tingkat Teatime is particularly appealing to those seeking a unique afternoon experience with a local twist, while the National Day specials add a timely, festive touch. Whether you’re looking to indulge in a leisurely teatime above the city or celebrate Singapore’s culinary heritage with a modern spin, Milli offers a compelling reason to visit this August.

Mui Kee @ Raffles City - Opens Second Outlet with New Dishes and Nostalgic Hong Kong Vibes

MuiKee17

Famed for its comforting bowls of silky congee, Mui Kee has opened its second outlet at Raffles City Shopping Centre, bringing with it more than 20 new and exclusive dishes alongside its well-loved signatures. Stepping into the space feels like a quick trip back in time — the relaxed, open-concept dining room is decked out with cosy booth seating, maroon subway tiles, retro lightboxes, and the brand’s signature mahjong tile feature wall. The ambience channels the bustling charm of mid-century Hong Kong, but in a modern, fuss-free setting that invites diners to linger.

MuiKee2
Preserved Bitter Gourd 4/5

We began our meal with the Preserved Bitter Gourd ($9.80), a dish that pleasantly surprised. For those who typically shy away from bitter gourd, this rendition is a revelation. The preservation process significantly mellows the inherent bitterness, leaving a gentle, almost tangy profile. What stood out most was its crunch — each bite delivered a refreshing, crisp texture that made it unexpectedly addictive.

MuiKee6
Handcrafted Wantons in Fragrant Chilli Oil, Garlic & Vinegar 3.8/5

Next came the Handcrafted Wantons in Fragrant Chilli Oil, Garlic & Vinegar ($11.80). At first glance, the dish appeared deceptively mild, lacking the fiery red hue one might expect. However, it quickly proved otherwise. The chilli oil carried a fragrant heat that built gradually, complemented by the sharpness of vinegar and the savoury depth of garlic. The wantons themselves were well-executed — thin-skinned, delicately wrapped, and filled with a juicy prawn and pork mixture that burst with flavour.

MuiKee11
Signature Braised Beef Brisket & Tendons with White Radish 3.8/5

The Signature Braised Beef Brisket & Tendons with White Radish ($31.80) showcased hearty, comforting flavours. The brisket and tendons were braised until tender, absorbing the rich, savoury sauce beautifully. The white radish, soft and porous, acted like a sponge, soaking up the robust braising liquid. While the dish delivered on flavour and texture, the portion size felt slightly modest for its price point.

MuiKee19
Shredded Duck & Preserved Vegetables Cheong Fun 4.2/5

A highlight from the new offerings was the Shredded Duck & Preserved Vegetables Cheong Fun ($9.20). This inventive combination brought together roasted shredded duck and preserved vegetables wrapped in silky cheong fun sheets, finished with a drizzle of savoury sauce. Initially an unconventional pairing, it turned out to be a harmonious one — the richness of the duck balanced by the slight tang and crunch of the preserved vegetables, all encased in soft, smooth rice rolls.

MuiKee22

MuiKee27
Housemade Pork Meatballs Congee 4.2/5

Of course, no visit to Mui Kee is complete without its signature congee. The Housemade Pork Meatballs Congee ($12.90) delivered exactly what the brand is known for — a bowl of velvety, smooth rice porridge with a consistency that borders on creamy. The pork meatballs were tender and well-seasoned, making this a comforting, hearty dish that warms both the stomach and soul.

MuiKee30

MuiKee34
Shrimp Roe with Mushroom Noodles 3/5

The Shrimp Roe with Mushroom Noodles ($13.80) highlighted the hallmark springy texture of Hong Kong-style noodles, cooked to that signature QQ bite. While the noodles themselves were commendable, the shrimp roe flavour leaned on the subtler side and didn’t quite leave a strong impression. That said, the mushrooms added a juicy, umami richness that helped lift the overall dish.

MuiKee38
Grass Jelly with Longan 4/5

Ending on a sweet note, the desserts proved to be more than just an afterthought. The Grass Jelly with Longan ($5.50) was light, cooling, and refreshing — perfect after a hearty meal. Even more impressive was the Tau Suan ($5.50), a traditional mung bean dessert elevated by fragrant tangerine peel. It struck a comforting balance of sweetness and depth, making it a standout and a must-order.

MuiKee44
Tau Suan 4.5/5

Mui Kee’s newest outlet successfully blends nostalgia with innovation, offering its classic favourites alongside an expanded menu featuring fresh interpretations of Hong Kong comfort food. Whether you’re here for a hearty bowl of congee or to explore its new dishes, it’s a spot that delivers warmth, flavour, and a touch of old-school charm.

Bibim Deli @ JEM - DIY Bibimbap Gets an Upgrade at Bibim Deli JEM with Celebrity Chef Collaborations

BibimDeli-4

Following the success of its debut at Suntec City, Bibim Deli expands west with its second outlet at JEM, bringing along an exciting collaboration with chefs from Netflix’s Culinary Class Wars. Helmed by Season 1’s Chef Min Yohan, the concept now welcomes Season 2’s Chef Woo Jung-wook — affectionately known as “Seoul Mum” — to introduce a lineup of exclusive dishes alongside a brand-new Tteokbokki station available only at this Jurong East outlet.

BibimDeli-2

BibimDeli-7

Staying true to its roots, Bibim Deli continues to champion its self-DIY bibimbap experience, set within a clean, minimalist space inspired by traditional hanok aesthetics. The concept is straightforward yet engaging. Diners begin by selecting a bowl and portioning their desired amount of rice before moving along a vibrant spread of banchan, proteins, and vegetables. With over 1,000 rotational recipes curated by Chef Min Yohan, the variety is both impressive and ever-evolving, ensuring that no two visits are quite the same. Prices start from an accessible $3.88 per 100g, making it easy to customise a bowl to your appetite — though restraint is key, as the final bill can quickly climb depending on your selections.

BibimDeli-10

BibimDeli-15

One of the main highlights at JEM is the outlet-exclusive Tteokbokki station. Here, diners can enjoy chewy rice cakes bathed in a rich, deeply flavoured sauce that strikes a comforting balance between sweet and spicy. The sauce clings beautifully to each piece, delivering a satisfying, hearty bite that feels both nostalgic and indulgent. It’s a thoughtful addition that elevates the overall spread, offering a warm, cooked option among the cold banchan.

BibimDeli-18

Complementing this are the limited-time dishes by Chef Woo Jung-wook, whose cooking leans into soulful, home-style Korean flavours. Her creations embody the kind of comforting dishes one might expect from a Korean home kitchen — hearty, well-seasoned, and deeply satisfying. Meanwhile, Chef Min Yohan’s new additions continue to showcase his flair for variety and balance, introducing more contemporary touches to the traditional spread.

BibimDeli-46

BibimDeli-48

The experience is rounded off with a complimentary bowl of miso soup, adding a light, savoury element to complete the meal. For those who prefer to dine at home, the takeaway option lets you pack your customised selection with ease, bringing a taste of Korean comfort to your table.

To celebrate the opening, Bibim Deli also brings back its popular “Guess the Right Weight” challenge at JEM. Diners who can accurately guess the weight of their bowl stand a chance to enjoy their meal for free — a fun, interactive touch that enhances the overall experience.

BibimDeli-36

BibimDeli-26

Overall, Bibim Deli at JEM delivers on both variety and flavour, offering a highly customisable dining experience that caters to different preferences and appetites. The collaboration with Culinary Class Wars chefs adds an extra layer of excitement, while the new Tteokbokki station provides a satisfying highlight. While the pay-by-weight concept offers flexibility, it also requires a mindful approach, as an indulgent bowl can easily exceed $20. Nonetheless, for those seeking a fuss-free yet flavourful Korean meal with plenty of choice, Bibim Deli remains a compelling option.
