Casa Vostra @ Raffles City - New Menu Highlights at Popular Italian Casual Restaurant Featuring Mamma’s Aglio e Olio, Beef Cheek Pappardelle and More

Casa Vostra, a bustling Italian eatery prominently located at the entrance of Raffles City, has been drawing crowds since its debut.

Known for its hearty Italian cuisine crafted by Chef Antonio Miscellaneo, the restaurant has now introduced several new dishes spanning antipasti to dessert, offering fresh flavours for diners to explore.

Baked Scamorza 4.2/5

Cheese enthusiasts should look out for the Baked Scamorza ($6), a sharing starter that highlights a sweet and salty combination that is hard to dislike. The savoury cheese is enhanced by a touch of herbs and a drizzle of honey, making it an addictive opener. You must make sure to dig into this while it’s hot.

Flan di Zucca 4/5

The Flan di Zucca ($12), or pumpkin flan, turned out to be a pleasant surprise. This dish combined roasted pumpkin with a creamy parmigiano reggiano fondue, topped with salt-cured guanciale and extra virgin olive oil. It was well-balanced.

Mamma’s Aglio e Olio 4/5

Chef Antonio's Mamma's Aglio e Olio ($15) pays homage to his mother's recipe, featuring a comforting blend of olive oil, garlic, and sun-dried tomatoes. The dish is milder in its garlicky profile but carries a subtle depth of flavour. The handmade pasta is unique in texture, which we found slightly reminiscent of Japanese ramen.

Sausage, Parpadelle 3/5

The Sausage Pappardelle ($20), featuring a pork sausage ragu in a sofritto base and topped with parmigiano reggiano, fell short of our expectations. While hearty, the dish could benefit from bolder and more robust flavours. That aside, the parpadelle’s texture was done well.

Pesto Pizza 4.2/5

We moved on to Casa Vostra's signature handmade pizza, opting for the Pesto Pizza ($23). We saw mixed reviews on the pizzas before this, but ours arrived with an airy and bubbly crust. The soft, chewy base is topped with basil pesto, roasted yellow tomatoes, stracciatella, Parmigiano Reggiano, and a sprinkling of pine nuts. The flavour combination was fresh and satisfying.

Tiramisu 3.5/5

For dessert, we were served with their non-alcoholic Tiramisu ($13) made with mascarpone, savoiardi soaked in decaffeinated coffee and cocoa powder.

We enjoyed our dinner during this visit, but would recommend dropping by during the non-peak hours to avoid the snaking queue.

MoVida @ Raffles City - Affordable San Sebastian-Inspired Lunch Set from $29

Movida introduces a wallet-friendly San Sebastian-inspired lunch set, starting from just $29 – an attractive deal given its prime city centre location. Available daily from 12pm to 3pm, the set lets diners choose from 2 Tapas + 1 Main for $29, 4 Tapas + 1 Main for $35, or 5 Tapas + 1 Main for $40. Perfect for foodies looking to sample a spread of dishes in one sitting, this offering brings variety and value to the table.

We went with the 4 Tapas + 1 Main option, and since there were two of us, we managed to sample a total of 8 tapas. It gave us an excellent overview of the selection available.

The Crab Crumpet (+$2) was a delightful one-biter. It is light, fresh and elegantly paired with saffron emulsion and finger lime. Meanwhile, the Home-made Duck Rillette in Crumpet was richer and more flavourful, featuring confit duck, pipparas, gherkin and a touch of oriental mustard for contrast.

Two tapas stood out in particular. The Tuna Tartare paired well with roasted avocado and a bright citrus dressing, a refreshing and well-balanced dish. The Tarteleta (+$2), a brik pastry tart filled with chicken liver parfait and verjuice, surprised us. Despite usually avoiding liver, this tartlet delivered a burst of flavour that was both rich and nuanced.

The Anchoa (+$2) – a Cantabrian artisan anchovy with smoked tomato sorbet – impressed with its quality and pleasant saltiness. However, as we shared it, the portion felt a little too small to savour fully. The Pan con Tomate & Jamón was classic but unremarkable, with a faint 'bad oil' aftertaste on the bread that distracted from the otherwise fresh components.

The Croqueta del Día, made with Manchego cheese, was a comforting and well-loved classic. Ask the staff about the daily flavour. On the other hand, the Octopus with Pancetta was a miss – the pancetta overpowered the octopus entirely, which got lost in the bite.

For mains, we tried the Gambas al Ajillo and Paella del Día. The gambas were fresh and crunchy but let down by burnt garlic, which left a bitter finish. The portion also felt a little small as a main, though the preceding tapas helped to fill us up. The highlight was the Paella, a squid ink version with calamari and fish. It is bold, briny, and well-executed.

For an additional $8, you can opt for dessert. Our pick is always the Churros, served with a chocolate sauce, but it was a bit too diluted for our liking. While the texture was crunchy, we missed the chewy centre we're accustomed to. The Flan, a creamy Spanish-style caramel custard, was pleasantly spiced and complemented by pestinos pastries that reminded us of masala chai. The third option available is a Spanish-style Rice Pudding.

Lychee Blossom and Aperol Spritz

Top up $4 for non-alcoholic beverages like Lychee Blossom or Shirley Temple, or $8 for alcoholic options such as Kalimotxo or Aperol Spritz. These make great pairings to round off your lunch.

Movida's new lunch set offers a solid, value-for-money experience that encourages exploration of Spanish flavours. While there were hits and a few misses, the variety and affordability make this a worthwhile option for a satisfying midday indulgence in the heart of the city.

WO WO DIAN (窝窝店) @ Raffles City Shopping Centre - 36% Off Total Bill as 136-Year Steamed Bun Legacy Brand From Sichuan Celebrates 1st Anniversary in Singapore

Wo Wo Dian (窝窝店), located in the basement of Raffles City Shopping Centre, is celebrating its first anniversary in Singapore. Hailing from Mianyang, Sichuan, this casual Chinese eatery boasts a 136-year legacy and is famed for its steamed buns and rice noodles.

To mark this milestone, the restaurant is launching a limited-time steamed bun flavour, available exclusively from 15 to 17 May 2025.

Diners can also enjoy a 36% discount on their total dine-in food bill during the same period, from 11.30am to 3.00pm and 5.00pm to 10.00pm, excluding beverages, with last orders taken 30 minutes before closing.

Cheeeeesy Pull Fresh Chilli Chicken Bun 4/5

Wo Wo Dian’s steamed buns are made with its signature traditional sourdough, resulting in a fluffy, soft texture with a slight chew.

This time, they've added a twist by introducing the Cheeeeesy Pull Fresh Chilli Chicken Bun ($5.90 each). While we've tried the Fresh Chilli Chicken Bun before, this anniversary special introduces a generous layer of oozy cheese. Although I would have liked more of that addictive chilli chicken filling to balance the cheese ratio, the flavours complemented each other surprisingly well.

The Century-old Traditional Pork Bun ($8.90 for 3 pieces) stands out as a non-spicy option among the other bun flavours. My favourite is the Fresh Chilli Chicken Bun ($6.90) for its tangy spice. Pro tip: Enjoy the buns while they're hot for the best texture.

Kung Pao Eggplant with Fragrant Shrimp Balls 3.5/5

Beyond their signature buns, Wo Wo Dian also serves a variety of Sichuan-style cooked dishes, both spicy and non-spicy. The Kung Pao Eggplant with Fragrant Shrimp Balls ($22.90) brings a mild heat that mellows quickly. However, the dish leaned much sweeter than I would have preferred, and my dining companion and I found the batter on the eggplant to be too thick.

From the Dry Pot Series, we tried the Dry Pot Chicken ($29.80), which featured a medley of crunchy celery, lotus root, thick-cut potatoes, and tender, spicy chicken. The dish isn't overly saucy, but due to its bold spices, it still pairs well with a side of white rice.

We completed our meal with a simple yet well-seasoned Stir-fried Romaine Lettuce with Minced Garlic ($11.90). We appreciated how the vegetables remained crisp and fresh-tasting.

The Black Pearl @ Odeon 333 - A New Roof Top Chinese Restaurant Offering Contemporary Take on Yue Cuisine

The Black Pearl, the latest Chinese restaurant to open at Odeon 333, presents a contemporary interpretation of 'Yue' cuisine, encompassing various sub-cuisines of the Greater Canton region. Located on the rooftop of Odeon 333, the lavish interior boasts a panoramic city view, featuring a main dining hall, three modular private dining rooms, a stylish bar, and an exclusive Chef's Table.

The meal begins with a taste of the dim sum menu, highlighted by the Crispy Shrimp Rice Roll ($18). The red hue comes from blending uncooked red rice into the flour mixture, giving the rice roll a vibrant touch. It is wrapped around a deep-fried Vietnamese rice paper fritter filled with prawn and asparagus, complemented by a house-blended soy sauce. The contrast between the smooth rice roll and the crispy interior creates an enjoyable textural experience.

Another standout is the Black Pearl Truffle Wild Mushroom Dumplings ($9 for 3pc). Wrapped in delicate dumpling skin and finished with edible gold shimmer, the filling consists of stir-fried chopped flower mushrooms, water chestnuts, asparagus, and carrots mixed with truffle paste and mushroom powder, enhancing the dish's earthy notes.

Moving on to appetisers, the Black Pearl Signature Pork Knuckle Jelly ($26 for 6pc) presents a modern take on traditional Teochew pork trotter jelly. Moulded into a sphere shape and covered in a jelly layer made of Spanish balsamic vinegar and squid ink, it delivers a burst of flavour in every bite.

Inspired by Southeast Asian grilled fish paste, the Otah Mousse in Cones ($9 per portion) features deboned Spanish mackerel blended with egg white, fresh cream, and coconut milk. It is steamed and piped into petite charcoal-tinted cones, paying homage to the traditional method of grilling otah over charcoal. Garnished with crispy salmon skin, it provides an extra layer of texture.

A crowd favourite, the Shunde Style Slow-Cooked Fish in Thick Broth ($22 per pax) boasts a creamy and flavourful broth enhanced by thinly sliced kaffir lime leaves. This dish is packed with premium ingredients, including sliced red grouper, fish maw, luffa, black fungus, jade fungus, bamboo shoots, dried scallops, fish skin, and shredded ginger for a comforting finish.

The BBQ Premium Iberico Char Siew ($38) is smoked with thyme, giving it an extra aroma. While most diners enjoyed it, the cut was a bit too fatty for my preference.

For an additional $18, the remaining duck meat can be prepared in three styles: Salt and pepper, Wok-fried Yee Mee with Mustard Green, or Diced Duck with Osmanthus Flower and Lettuce.

A surprising favourite, the Teochew Pan-Fried Hor Fun with Seafood ($28), features broad rice noodles wok-fried with fish sauce, preserved radish, bean sprouts, prawns, and scallops. The inclusion of Japanese Mangetsu eggs adds layers of flavour and aroma, while the pancake-like presentation makes it visually appealing.

Ending the meal on a sweet note, the Pumpkin Sago with Coconut Milk ($8 per pax) blends Japanese pumpkin with fresh cream and coconut milk for a smooth consistency. The inclusion of pumpkin cubes and sago adds a pleasant texture, and diners can enjoy it chilled or hot.

While The Black Pearl delivers well-executed and delicious dishes, many of them can be found in other Chinese restaurants across Singapore. The restaurant succeeds in offering a comfortable dining experience with quality ingredients and refined cooking techniques. However, it is still in search of a unique identity to truly stand out as a gem in Singapore's competitive Chinese dining scene. Nonetheless, with its prime location, stylish setting, and diverse menu, The Black Pearl is undoubtedly worth a visit for those looking to indulge in contemporary Cantonese cuisine.
