Moonbow @ Dempsey Hill - New Royal Midday High Tea, 70% Savoury 30% Sweet

MoonbowHighTea9

Having visited Moonbow when it opened earlier in the year, I was back at the restaurant on a weekend afternoon to check out the newly launched Royal Midday High Tea. The high set is available on Friday to Sunday, from 230pm to 530pm.

MoonbowHighTea2
High Tea Set

I am not a high tea person because I do not have a sweet tooth. Thanks to Chef Heman, who has come up with the new High Tea Set ($68.80) that focuses more on savoury than sweet. I was overwhelmed as 70% of the high tea set is savoury, and only 30% is sweet. For the savoury items, diners can look forward to Parma Ham Rose, Evvo Caviar, Salted Egg Bacon Bits Choux Pastry, Scallop Flower Amuse Bouche, Braised Short Rib Artisan Squid Ink Bread and Dark Chocolate Coated Foie Gras Lollipop.

MoonbowHighTea3
High Tea Set

There are Green Tea Fondant, Black Berries Rice Sorbet, Bacon Cheesecake and Mango Chocolate Mousse for the sweets selection.

MoonbowHighTea5
Tomato Butter Scones

A must-have to complement the high tea experience is the Tomato Butter Scones. Unlike the traditional English scone, Chef Heman's version is infused with tomatoes giving it a sweet, tangy finishing.

MoonbowHighTea22

MoonbowHighTea21

As it is the truffle's season, Chef Heman has also incorporated the premium ingredients into the high tea menu.

MoonbowHighTea11
Cheesy Truffle Curly Fries

Besides the high tea set and scone, do check out the small plates to complete the high tea experience. The Cheesy Truffle Curly Fries covered with Parmesan Cheese and paired with Truffle Mayo Dips are delightfully addictive.

MoonbowHighTea15
Crispy Salmon Finger in Drawer

I feel that the Crispy Salmon Finger in Drawer is worthy of a shot at the main menu. Deep-fried to golden brown and looks like our local goreng pisang, it is a unique take of the usual deep-fried fish with a crispy exterior coat. In addition, it comes with two dipping sauces - truffle mayo and arrabbiata olio for the fullest enjoyment of the crispy salmon finger.

Suppose you are someone like me preferring savoury over sweets. In that case, you will enjoy the high tea set at Moonbow, which is different from other places with more sweets than savoury. As you can see from the set that I tried, it's not your usual cake, tart, sandwich or kueh.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

SIRI HOUSE @ Dempsey - Launches New Weekend Brunch And Brunch Cocktails

SiriHouse20

SIRI HOUSE at Dempsey is known for its modern Asian cuisine. Making full use of its tranquil setting, with lush greenery right outside its doorstep, SIRI HOUSE invites you to spend a relaxing weekend with them. It has launched the new SIRI HOUSE Weekend Brunch, available on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The casual and communal brunch menu offers a la carte small and large brunch plates to share, coupled with a range of classic brunch cocktails concocted with a modern Asian twist.

SiriHouse15
Brunch Cocktails

The brunch cocktails at $12 per tipple are very affordable. It incorporates handcrafted infusions, freshly squeezed juices, housemade syrups and spice blends. I kick start the brunch with the Mary Nagano, which showcases an Asian twist to the popular Bloody Mary. You can taste the familiar heat from wasabi and other Asian ingredients - Worcestershire, chilli padi and Japanese vinegar. For a refreshing note, go for the more citrus-forward mix of Aperol, Summertime Madness for an easy start to your day.

SiriHouse5
Lobster Scramble 3/5

We had Lobster Scramble ($21) and Aranici ($21) from the small plates menu. I suggest going for its regular Easy Scramble ($7) instead, as the lobster scramble being a more luxurious egg dish was rather underwhelming. A good and straightforward scrambled eggs dish would have brought more joy.

SiriHouse13
Arancini 3.8/5

On the other hand, the Arancini surprised us with its takoyaki-alike flavours, giving the classic risotto balls an Asian facelift. Instead of using Italian rice, this is made using dashi infused Japanese rice, chunks of octopus and chorizo and encased within is oozy mozzarella. Atop the crisp balls are Jaew (Thai chilli) mayo, bonito flakes and furikake.

SiriHouse19

SiriHouse26
Champion Roll 3.8/5

We had the Champion Roll ($26) - a sourdough bread loaded with a baked egg, mushrooms, bacon, asparagus, gouda, and an arrabbiata cream sauce from the Large Plate menu. If you like pizza, this will be your thing.

SiriHouse29

SiriHouse28
Cheeseburger 4/5

Also on the menu is SIRI HOUSE’s Signature Cheeseburger ($29). The fluffy toasted milk bun is a plus point. The housemade beef patty was flavourful, with a good spread of harissa mayo to bring all the ingredients together.

SiriHouse47
Bomboloni 3.8/5

SiriHouse39
Cherry Sundae 4/5

For dessert, we had the adorable, bite-size Bomboloni ($16). It's an assortment of fluffy Italian style doughnuts with cashew chocolate ganache and mixed berry compote fillings. The Cherry Sundae ($18) with tart cherry compote and a milky sweet yoghurt ice cream is delicious too.

SiriHouse1

The SIRI HOUSE Brunch menu is available on Saturdays from 11.30am to 2.30pm (last order 2pm) and on Sundays from 11.30 am to 9.00pm (last order 8pm.

MOONBOW @ Dempsey Hill - A Dazzling New Addition That Specialises In Modern European Cuisine With An Asian Accent

Moonbow20

The ever-changing dining scene at Dempsey Hill sees a dazzling new addition, MOONBOW. Chef Heman Tan and Dylan Soh opened the restaurant, which specialises in modern European cuisine with an Asian influence. The glass wall in the main dining hall separating the kitchen reminds me of Hell Kitchen's scene. Diners have a full view of the adrenaline rush in the kitchen.

Moonbow1
Candy Floss 3.5/5

Our dinner begins with the complimentary Candy Floss. It is a playful starter to kick start the dinner.

Moonbow5
Moonbow Oyster Bay 4/5

Next up is the Moonbow Oyster Bay ($10++/pc), serves with oyster leaves at the side. The purposes of the oyster leaves are to open up the palate. The briny Fine de Claire oyster is paired with yuzu gel, cucumber pearl and yuzu granita for a flavoured and refreshing finish.

Moonbow8
Garden of Escargot 3.5/5

The Escargot ($23++) is plated like a garden as if the snails are roaming among the fields of edible flowers, fresh micro cress, truffle gelato, mashed edamame and mushroom soil. There are even lychee pearls representing raindrops.

Moonbow11
Jerusalem Artichoke 4/5

The Jerusalem Artichoke ($25++) is a comforting and creamy soup that comes with a 64 °C Sous Vide Egg, Caviar and Sunchoke Chips to balance the earthiness of the artichoke.

Moonbow14
Cauliflower Bloom 4/5

The Cauliflower Bloom ($25++) is a multi-textural enjoyment of the various forms of cauliflower. On the plate, you can find warm cauliflower floret, dehydrate cauliflower, cauliflower cous cous, cauliflower puree paired with nuts crumbs, garlic crumbs, cress and hollandaise.

Moonbow15
Tomahawk de Swine 4.2/5

Moving to the mains, we tried a couple of items from their menu. First is the gigantic Tomahawk de Swine ($68++). The restaurant uses untrimmed 4 days aged young pork tomahawk chop paired with roasted garlic, caramelized lime and pineapple compote. The pork chop glazed with BBQ marinade is grilled to a beautiful tender with a hint of smokiness and sweetness. My favourite way of appreciating the beautiful pork is to spread the roasted garlic on it.

Moonbow17
Black Silkie Poulet 4.2/5

My first thought when I see the Black Silkie Poulet ($38++) is that the restaurant has taken a big risk. It is an ingredient that is usually used in Chinese cuisine but not in European cuisine. The sight of a black chicken may turn some diners off. I love black chicken, so I was worried but internally delight to have the dish on the menu. The black chicken's leg is chargrilled and paired with garlicky crumb, wolfberry mashed, black garlic puree, ugly heirloom tomatoes and chives. I have to call out the accompanying bearnaise sauce that brightens the tender chicken.

Moonbow22
Chef Heman’s Black Berry 4 Grain Healthy Rice With Roasted Pork Jowl “Ton Toro” 4/5

One can opt for Chef Heman's Black Berry 4 Grain Healthy Rice With Roasted Pork Jowl "Ton Toro" ($38++) for a healthy eat. I enjoyed the different textures of the rice, and what brightens up the dish is the addition of Chinese lap cheong sausage.

Moonbow21
Fermented Red Yeast Wine 4.5/5

Another favourite dish of mine is the Fermented Red Yeast Wine ($38++). I applaud the creativity of incorporating fermented red glutinous rice wine with the barramundi fillet. I am usually sceptical of this type of East meets West creations, but this dish has won me over.

Moonbow31
Treasure Drawer 4/5

To wrap up the dinner on a sweet note, you can try the Treasure Drawer ($32++), which comes in two trays of dessert. Diners can enjoy a sweet treat of pistachio chocolate souffle, mango passion mousse, petite apple crumble tartlets, financier raspberry, orange granita, yuzu star anise pate fruit and truffle cheese macaron. It will be a good choice as you can have a bit of everything.

Hathaway @ Dempsey Hill - New Restaurant At Dempsey Showcasing A Strong Local Influence Interlaced With French or Middle-Eastern Cuisine

HathawayCafe16

A new addition to Dempsey Hill enclave is Hathaway by the same folk behind Bread Yard. The interior feels casual, more like a cafe/bistro though it categorises itself as a modern Asian restaurant. The menu showcases a strong local influence interlaced with French or Middle-Eastern cuisine.

HathawayCafe6

I started with my daily dose of caffeine. I mentioned earlier that the place is more like a cafe because the restaurant has a proper barista coffee machine with skilful barista making each cup of coffee with beautiful latte art.

HathawayCafe11
Whole Baby Potato Cottage Fries 4/5

I have tried fries served in many ways such as curly, wedges, waffle, shoestring etc. but the Whole Baby Potato Cottage Fries ($16) is a unique cut. It is almost like having a begedil topped with garlic and rosemary. It comes with za'atar labneh and chilli-lime cilantro dipping sauces.

HathawayCafe13
Octopus Bakar & Sambal Udang 4.2/5

We actually skipped the brunch menu and dived for the mains because we find them more interesting over the usual egg benedict and toasts. We started with the Octopus Bakar & Sambal Udang ($42). The octopus grilled will kecap manis gives the tentacle a delectable sweetness and smokiness.

HathawayCafe20
Ah Nya's Fish Curry 4.2/5

The Ah Nya's Fish Curry ($32) is an exciting dish on the menu that comes with a whole fillet of local Kuhlbarra barramundi, fondant potatoes and a super long toasted bread to soak up that delicious curry sauce.

HathawayCafe23
Seri Muka 4.2/5

The dessert at Hathaway is definitely worth your calories. We have the Seri Muka ($16) whereby the kueh salat is accompanied with a scoop of apom berkuah ice cream in pengat pisang sauce. The binding of Nonya kueh with western techniques delivers the traditional Nonya snack a new form of appreciation.

HathawayCafe26
The Queen's Conserve 4.5/5

Last but not least, we have The Queen's Conserve ($16). A scoop of lavender ice cream is sandwiched two pieces of crispy and flaky kouign amann paired with passionfruit curd.

The food at Hathaway is really delicious and unique as they are items not commonly offered elsewhere. However, the price is quite expensive. For the cost of the mains, it almost the same as for the more high end or Michelin starred restaurant.

Jam at Siri House @ Dempsey Hill - Monthly Tasting Table Feast

RestaurantJam17

I am back at Jam at Siri House for the monthly Tasting Table. It is a monthly feast event whereby a sumptuous spread of over 20 small plates is offered tableside from roving trolleys. Similar to those traditional dim sum house, you just need to pick the dishes you want to try from the trolleys.

RestaurantJam4
Osmanthus Jelly 4/5

RestaurantJam16
Mee Sua 2.8/5

During my visit which falls in the Chinese New Year period, the Tasting Table incorporates a few Chinese New Year inspired dishes such as the Osmanthus Jelly ($6) and Mee Sua ($12). Osmanthus jelly is an interesting take of the Chinese dessert, making it into a savoury dish. The jelly block is actually made with osmanthus and bonito and then topped with smoked trout roe and Siberian caviar. As for the mee sua kueh, I thought it was a bit disappointing. This fell short of Swee Choon's version, which comes with a layer of crispy vermicelli.

RestaurantJam2
Bufala 4/5

A light starter is the Bufala ($8). I enjoyed the addition of tangerine and yuzu dressing which gives the milky ciligini di bufala a lift in enjoyment, with the toasted watermelon seeds for texture.

RestaurantJam6
Chawanmushi 4.2/5

At a glance, the Chawanmushi ($8) looks rather ordinary with the kani. It is not until I took a mouthful of it and my eyes brightened by the sharp flavours of Thai cuisine. The egg custard is steamed in tom yum broth and topped with fried lime leaf, injecting the bright flavours of Thai cuisine into the traditional Japanese chawanmushi.

RestaurantJam8
Chicken 4.2/5

A hearty and delicious dish is the Grilled Chicken Oysters ($12) that is fragrant by the crab fat garlic butter. The char on the chicken gives it a further smoky bitterness, giving it an aromatic finishing. I like the touch of adding diced water chestnut for the extra textural bite.

RestaurantJam11
Kingfish 4.5/5

For something clean and tasty, go for the Hiramasa Kingfish Carpaccio ($12) which is cleverly paired with umeboshi vinaigrette, pickled green chilli and lumpfish roe. It complemented the clean flavour of the fish while not stealing the limelight of the main ingredients.

RestaurantJam12
Beef 3/5

I can understand what the chef is trying to do with the Wagyu Tri Tip MB 6/7 ($12), it is a twist to the local satay. It comes in the form of grilled wagyu skewer, pickled shallot and a glutinous rice ball, elevating the components of the traditional satay. Unfortunately, I thought the meat was a bit tough for my liking, but I adore the other support items on the dish.

RestaurantJam18
Tiger Prawns 4.2/5

Grilled to perfection with crunchy texture is the Tiger Prawns ($12). It is paired with laksa anchovy emulsion to complement the sweetness of the deep sea tiger prawns.

RestaurantJam15
Corn Dog 3.5/5

I find the Corn Dog ($6) is a fun and playful dish, bringing out the childhood in me. Instead of the usual sausage with cornmeal batter, it uses Taiwanese pork sausage coated with cornflake. It is best to enjoy with the accompanying Sriracha mustard sauce.

RestaurantJam20
Grilled Pineapple 4/5

For dessert, I decided to go for the Grilled Pineapple ($8) since the dish sort of reminds me of the popular pineapple tart snack eaten during Chinese New Year period. Grilled pineapple is served on top sugee shortbread and paired with pineapple tarragon ice cream. A deconstructed form of the pineapple tart.

While I enjoyed the food at Jam in my previous visit, I mentioned that the price is on the steep side. The tasting table, on the contrary, is more reasonable with price ranging from $6 to $12 per dish. I also like the concept of roving trolleys, which injected charm and interaction into the whole experience. Their next Tasting Table is on 19 March 2020, you can Book via http://bit.ly/tastingtablemarch or call +65 96670533. Do check the website regularly for the next upcoming Tasting Table.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

COMO Cuisine @ Dempsey - A Collection Of Global Cuisines Across COMO Properties And COMO Shambala

ComoCuisine25

Mentioned COMO Cuisine at Dempsey, many will think that the food here is about wellness. It is actually not that. The menu at COMO Cuisine comprises of signatures dishes handpicked from across the COMO properties and COMO Shambala. It is a unique culinary journey where you can experience a collection of global cuisines sans having to get on a plane, all in one place.

ComoCuisine2
Bhutanese Momos 3.5/5

We started with some Bhutanese Momos ($12++). At a glance, it looks like Chinese dumpling, but the dough is thicker, made from a combination of buckwheat flour and wheat flour. It is quite substantial, filled with pork, garlic, coriander and Szechuan pepper. I was actually disappointed that the accompanying Ezay chilli sauce did not use Bhutanese sun-dried chilli powder but Korean chilli powder which lacks the spicy kick.

ComoCuisine4
Mangrove Crab Salad 4.5/5

The Mangrove Crab Salad ($24++) may look a little dull in colour but don't be deceived by it. It is a colourful firework of flavours from the fish sauce, lime juice, garlic and palm sugar. This is COMO Cuisine's interpretation of Thai Som Tum with fresh-picked mud crabs tossed in a salad of green mango, starfruit, cherry tomatoes, beansprouts, mint, coriander, Thai basil, fresh coconut slices and cashew nuts.

ComoCuisine7
Spicy Prawn Relish 4/5

The Spicy Prawn Relish ($12++) is not spicy at all. It is like a bowl of chilli soup with chopped local tiger prawns and grilled corns. What is more interesting is the accompanying starfruit, guava, cucumber crudites and house-made rice crackers for dipping into the relish.

ComoCuisine8
Golden Beetroot 4/5

A clean and delicious tasting dish is the Golden Beetroot ($20++). The heirloom beetroot is roasted in oil and vinegar, and served with Australian goat's feta cheese and finished with poppy seed dressing.

ComoCuisine13
Lobster Biryani 4.5/5

The Lobster Biryani ($48++) really comes as a surprise for me. I thought COMO cuisine is all about the western fare, but this really was unexpected. I like how it is cooked with a house-made naan covering the bowl of basmati rice, locking in all the flavours. On the side, we have raita and guava pomegranate salad, for a balanced diet.

ComoCuisine16
Tandoor Cauliflower 4.2/5

I guess COMO Cuisine never failed to surprise me with the Tandoor Cauliflower ($22++). I mean who will skewered chunks of cauliflower and roasted them in tandoor oven. What brings the dish together is the lemon dressing, giving it the needed acidity on top of the smokiness.

ComoCuisine19
Pappardelle 4.2/5

Freshly made daily is the Pappardelle ($30++) that is cooked to a beautiful al dente bite. I love my pasta saucy and hence the duck ragout was a match in heaven for me. This is further topped with radicchio, basil and shaved pecorino.

ComoCuisine22
Lamb Shank Massaman 4.5/5

Another beautiful dish on the menu is the Lamb Shank Massaman ($45++) served with naan bread and lightly pickled pineapple and cucumber. The lamb shank is cooked to fork-tender, falling off the bone with ease. It is so good that I could not stop going back for more naan to mop up the sauce.

ComoCuisine26
Rich Chocolate Cake 4.2/5

The Rich Chocolate Cake ($14++) is COMO Cuisine's take on the chocolate florentine. The tart base is made from digestive biscuits and then covered with Michel Cluizel 70% chocolate. It is then served with rum-marinated cherries, fresh berries, coffee caramel, mascarpone chantilly infused vanilla bean and edible gold leaf.

ComoCuisine28
Mocha Soft Serve 4/5

Subject to daily flavour, we had the Mocha Soft Serve ($10++). Who can resist a soft, creamy and refreshing soft served to wrap up dinner? It actually tastes like milo soft serve.

ComoCuisine34
Jackfruit Pudding 4.2/5

Another beautiful dessert on the menu is the Jackfruit Pudding ($14++). The soft and moist ginger jackfruit pudding is served warm and topped with fresh jackfruit, passionfruit and coconut slivers. This is complemented by a scoop of house-made jaggery ice cream

Note: This is an invited tasting.
