Pang Zi Durian @ Jurong West - Neighbourhood Durian Specialty Cafe

Pang Zi 1

Looking for durian treats but can't wait for the durian season to arrive? Pang Zi Durian is a neighbourhood durian speciality cafe aiming to offer a wide range of handcrafted durian desserts that contain no preservatives to satisfy your cravings. They've recently launched three new innovative durian creations.
Pang Zi 2
Durian Milkshake 3.5/5

The first dessert we had was their Durian Milkshake ($6.50). It was creamy and smooth, with a thick consistency. Mix the shake thoroughly to enjoy the durian flesh on the bottom. The shake tastes more on the milky end, while the durian notes are much lighter. It can get quite heavy for some, hence would recommend sharing this with a friend.

Pang Zi 4
Mao Shan Wang Spaghettieis 3.8/5

The unique Mao Shan Wang Spaghettieis ($11.90) has pasta-shaped mao shan wang gelato sitting on vanilla cream, with coconut cream and coconut flakes on top. The mao shan wang gelato was rich, while the vanilla cream gave a different dimension to the dessert. We also appreciated the crisp bits of coconut flakes. We recommend sharing this as the sweetness and creaminess can get quite heavy. It melts pretty fast, so digs into it quickly upon serving.

Pang Zi 3
Durian Sticky Rice 4.2/5

Our favourite was the Durian Sticky Rice ($7.90). You have warm glutinous rice served with coconut cream and a generous portion of unadulterated durian flesh. The rice was lovely. It was soft, chewy and fragrant, everything you'd want your sticky rice to be. If you want something not too sweet, this is the one to go for among the three shared here.

Apart from these new creations, Pang Zi Durian also offers other items, like durian puffs, durian mousse, and a range of ice cream flavours such as white coconut, dark chocolate, lychee yuzu, salted caramel popcorn, ondeh ondeh and more.

If you can't pop by their space, Pang Zi Durian also does island-wide delivery at $5 for a minimum spending of $40 and free for orders $80 and above. For Jurong and Bukit Batok residents, you can enjoy free delivery at a minimum of $40.

Feng Zhen Lor Mee @ Taman Jurong Food Centre - The Same Gold Standard For Best Lor Mee In The West

FengZhenLorMee12

Suppose you ask me where is the best Lor Mee in the West. Feng Zhen Lor Mee at Taman Jurong Food Centre is the top of my list. The last visit to the stall was back in 2016, and I noticed a couple of minor changes. First, the signboard has changed from yellow to purple. Second, it has also replaced the porcelain bowls with plastic bowls.

FengZhenLorMee4
Lor Mee 4.2/5

The bowl of gooey slurping goodness comprises braised pork belly, braised egg, fish cake, ngoh hiang and flaky fish meat. It has not changed since the last visit.

FengZhenLorMee8

What binds everything in the bowl together has to be the delicious gravy. The flavoursome gravy or "lor" is not overly starchy, making it drinkable yet just ideal for coating each strand of noodles. For the fullest enjoyment, I would recommend adding some chilli sauce, garlic, and the soul of any good lor mee, the vinegar into the bowl of noodles, and give them a good toss.

Pang Zi Durian @ Jurong West Street 41 - Durian Cafe In The West Heavenly Durian Puff, Ice Cream and Mousse

PangZiCafe15

Tucked in a small neighbourhood of Jurong West, Pang Zi Durian is a durian speciality cafe that offers not just homemade durian desserts and artisanal ice creams, but also fresh durians during the high season. Founded by two friends who are both durian lovers, they learnt from scratch and started off as durian sellers at their very first own durian stall last year. The cafe concept was conceived out of practicality in fact. As the high season dwindled, to sustain their business during the low season, in the long run, expanding into a cafe was deemed the way to go.

PangZiCafe11
Durian Mousse 4.5/5

Their Durian Mousse ($5) is a must-try here if you are a durian lover. Made with D24 durians with just cream and no sugar, I love its bittersweetness. It comes with a dollop of D24 durian puree, and an additional $1 will get you an extra serving of it.

PangZiCafe13
Durian Puffs 3.8/5

While I was there, there was a constant buttery aroma wafting from their kitchen as fresh batches of puffs were being churned out. All that aroma in the air comes from their signature is Durian Puffs ($10 for 10 pcs). I'm impressed with the puff pastry, which tasted like a high-quality French Choux pastry, crisp on the outside with goodness filled centre. However, I feel the durian custard mousse was slightly too thin to match up with the pastry.

PangZiCafe10
MSW Durian Ice cream 4.2/5

Their other signature item is MSW Durian Ice Cream. The big chunky pieces of durian flesh will make you just want to dive right into it. The ice cream was rich in durian flavour and loaded with MSW chunks. Like the 2 other items, this tasted like the real deal too, with no artificial fillers in it.

PangZiCafe19
Pistachio Ice Cream 4/5

A wide range of artisanal ice creams is available as well, and a few unique flavours might interest you such as this roasted Pistachio ice cream. It's not in the usual green hue as it is made with roasted pistachio, which gives the ice cream a much more pronounced nuttiness, almost like a roasted black bean to me.

PangZiCafe22
Dark Chocolate Durian 4/5

There are also more refreshing flavours such as Peach Yakult, and Melon Coconut. Especially the Melon Coconut, which is one of the founder's favourite, for its milky, melony flavour that will hit the right spots for you too. One of their latest creations is Dark Chocolate Durian, and if that's intriguing enough, do visit them and have a try.

Ah Er Soup (阿2汤) @ Yuan Ching Road - The Real Master Behind Michelin Bib Gourmand Award 2017

AhErSoup5

With the announcement of the Michelin Bib Gourmand list for 2017, I was left puzzled with the new entrant Ah Er Soup (阿2汤) at ABC Brickworks Market. What is the judging criteria of the Michelin inspectors? The outlet at ABC Brickworks Food Centre is a franchise stall and not the original stall. Did Michelin even know that the original recipe comes from Mr Ma Pit San and Mr Nong Gan who started the original and main stall at Yuan Ching Road?

AhErSoup6
Buddha Jumps Over The Wall 4.5/5

Feeling injustice for the duo that come up with the recipe, I decided to visit the original stall at Yuan Ching Road. During my visit, I saw Mr Ma busy at the back of the stall, preparing the soup. I ordered my favourite Buddha Jumps Over The Wall ($7) which comes with generous ingredients such as fish maw, mushroom, abalone and chicken. The soup which has been boiled for at least 2 hours, was very intense and rich in flavour.

AhErSoup11
Peanuts with Lotus Roots & Pork Ribs Soup 4.5/5

Among the other soups on the menu, I had the Peanuts with Lotus Roots & Pork Ribs Soup ($4.50). The pork ribs were cooked until so soft that it literally fell apart with ease. The lotus roots were also sweet and crunchy. I can once again taste the effort behind each bowl of soup in the richness, and this comes with a subtle nutty finishing from the peanuts.

AhErSoup18
Pumpkin Rice 3.5/5 and Oliver Rice 4/5

AhErSoup14
Olive Rice 4/5

Ah Er Soup at Yuan Ching Road offers 4 types of rice to go with their soups. They are the normal Steamed Rice, Brown Rice, Pumpkin Rice and Olive Rice. I understand the ABC Brickworks Food Centre stall does not offer the olive rice. I would highly recommend the olive rice which is much more fragrant compared to the others. On top of that, you don't usually get to have it elsewhere.

AhErSoup13
Preserved Vegetable with Braised Meat 3.8/5

Different from the other franchise stalls across the islands, the main stall offers other braised items such as the Preserved Vegetable with Braised Meat ($6), Braised Pig Trotter, Braised Pig Skin, Braised Beancurd, Braised Egg, Salted Vegetable, Tau Kee and Handmade Fish Roll to go with the nourishing soups.

Makan Melaka @ Jurong West Street 41 - A Good Bowl Of Chendol In The West

3Z5A0964ed

The weather has been turning rather warm and humid lately. For those staying in the West and want to cool the body down from the heat, I would recommend Makan Melaka at Jurong West Street 41 for a good bowl of chendol.

3Z5A0963ed

What makes Makan Melaka's chendol stands out from most places is the freshly made chendol and gula melaka specially brought in from Malacca fortnightly instead of using syrup. It also uses freshly squeezed coconut milk from a supplier to make their chendol.

3Z5A0962ed

Makan Melaka offers a variety of chendol with different toppings starting from the Traditional Chendol Melaka ($1.50). On the menu, there are Chendol Melaka with Red Bean, Corn or Glutinous Rice ($1.80 each).

3Z5A0960ed
Chendol Melaka with Corn and Red Bean 4.2/5

On top of the tradtional chendol melaka, I also ordered the Chendol Melaka with Corn and Red Bean ($2.10). The chendol has a nice bite to it with hint of pandan flavour. I like the fact that the dessert is not overly sweet, with the fresh coconut milk and gula melaka working harmoniously for a well balanced finish. I prefer the addition of the red bean and corn for a lifted enjoyment.

Feng Zhen Lor Mee @ Taman Jurong Food Centre - A Bowl of Lor Goodness

IMG_3579ed

My first visit to Taman Jurong Food Centre I did not notice Feng Zhen Lor Mee as it is closed on Sunday. On my second visit with my foodie friends on a Saturday morning, we noticed the long queue at the stall. Needless to say, we joined the queue to find out what was the reason for the long queue.

IMG_3586ed
Lor Mee 4.2/5

The first thing I noticed about the bowl of Lor Mee ($2.50/$3.00) is the generous amount of ingredients. I can spot many ingredients such as fish cake, egg, braised pork belly, ngo hiang, flaky fish meat. For the price, this is really value for money.

IMG_3580ed
Lor Mee 4.2/5

Besides the generous ingredients, the thick gravy or "lor" is the other highlight of the delicious bowl of lor mee. The flavoursome gravy was not thick but not starchy. Together with the garlic, vinegar and chilli, lifting it to a whole new level of enjoyment.

IMG_6660

If you have the chance to drop by Taman Jurong Food Centre, I would recommend you to try Feng Zhen Lor Mee. Among the different lor mee I have tried. I would say this is one of the best. I personally think it is better than Bukit Purmei Lor Mee.

Rong Sheng Fish Head Bee Hoon @ Taman Jurong Food Centre

IMG_5496ed

Hidden right at the corner of Taman Jurong Food Centre on level 3, near the toilet area is Rong Sheng Fish Head Bee Hoon. To be frank, the stall did not look inviting. I took a chance and ordered a bowl of fried fish beehoon because of the sign saying it is Hong Kong style fishhead beehoon. I had a brief chat with the uncle behind the cooking and he told me he is from Hong Kong. Maybe that explains the signage.

IMG_2949ed
Fried Fish Beehoon 4/5

I have to say the Fried Fish Beehoon ($3.50/$4) smelled really good when it was served to me. The cloudy soup carried a hint of chinese wine which was very aromatic. Together with the heat from the ginger, it warmed the body with each sip of the soup.

IMG_2952ed
Fried Fish Beehoon 4/5

IMG_2953ed
Fried Fish Beehoon 4/5

The beehoon itself was smooth and silky. You probably can tell from the picture, I had a hard time picking them up with my chopsticks. For the main ingredient, the fish meat itself was chunky and meaty.

IMG_2956ed
Five Spice Fish Cake 4/5

The stall also sells some homemade Five Spice Fish Cake ($1). I got a piece to try and it was quite a delightful snack or small bite to go with the fried fish beehoon.

Overall I enjoyed the bowl of fried fish beehoon. Although milk was added to the soup, the robustness of the sweet broth was not eclipsed by the milky taste but instead giving in a creamier texture on top of the hint of aromatic Chinese wine.

58 Minced Meat Noodle @ Taman Jurong Food Centre

IMG_5499ed

My hunt for great hawker food in the West has brought me to Taman Jurong Food Centre. I made some research online and many reviews directed me to 58 Minced Meat Noodle located at the 3 storey food centre on the third level. Taking the escalator up to the third level, I was received by a long queue of patrons, queuing at 58 Minced Meat Noodle. It is not hard to miss the stall as it is just beside the escalator and it always have a queue.

IMG_2957ed
Bak Chor Mee 4.5/5

The Bak Chor Mee ($2.50/$3/$3.50) is quite generous with its ingredients. There are minced pork, lean pork, pork lard, mushroom and pig liver. The bowl of noodle does not come with vinegar. Patron can self help to it, for your own preference.

IMG_2962ed
Bak Chor Mee 4.5/5

Compared to many other noodle stalls, the mee pok noodle here is on the softer side but not those soggy type. It still comes with a nice bite. A lot of the reviews mentioned that they do not like the soft texture but I am perfectly ok with it. In fact I actually enjoyed it.

IMG_2966ed
Bak Chor Mee 4.5/5

The other highlight of 58 Minced Meat Noodle's bak chor mee is the chilli sauce. The chilli sauce has a good spicy kick to it that goes very well with the noodle. 58 Minced Meat Noodle is definitely one of my favourite bak chor mee now.

Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak @ Boon Lay Place Food Village

IMG_6119ed

By now most of you may have known that I have been relocated to the west of Singapore. This means I get to explore more food options that are available in the west side of Singapore. One of these places I wanted check out for the longest time is Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak. Its popularity has been heard even all the way from the east but I have never made that long journey. Cut the story short, I was at the stall itself to check out how power this so called legendary nasi lemak is a couple of weeks ago.

IMG_6116ed
Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak 3.5/5

The first thing I observed when I reached there around 6pm is the snaking long queue of customers eagerly waiting to place their order. The stall actually sells quite a lot of stuff besides their nasi lemak. I was actually at a lost in how I should place my order. Lucky they have a a couple of ready set meals for easy ordering.

IMG_6110ed
Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak 3.5/5

I think I ordered the Chicken Set Meal B ($3) which comes with a chicken wing, a fried egg, ikan bilis. I added on a piece of Otah ($1) to complete my meal. The chicken was well marinated and deep fried to a nice crisp that is very enjoyable. However it is not as fat and juicy which I would prefer. The rice was fragrant with the nice coconut aroma. The star has to the sweet chilli that complemented the nasi lemak very much.

IMG_6115ed
Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak 3.5/5

Overall I felt that Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak is above average one of the better ones around but definitely not the best. Why is it so power? Probably has to do with its chilli and its reasonable pricing. Unless I am in the vicinity, I would not make all the way just to have it.
