Mama Jac's Kitchenette Private Dining - A Memorable and Satisfying Cantonese-Peranakan Dinner

MaMaJacKichenette16

During my visit to Mama Jac's Kitchenette Private Dining in April 2023, I had the pleasure of experiencing an 8-course meal priced at $125.50 per person. Mama Jac specialises in Cantonese-Peranakan cuisine, offering a unique fusion of flavours and culinary traditions.

MaMaJacKichenette7
Mango Salad 4.5/5

Our private dining experience commenced with the tantalising Mango Salad, a refreshing appetiser that combined the perfect balance of crunch and pungent flavours. The vibrant mangoes added a delightful sweetness to the dish.

MaMaJacKichenette11
Hai Zhou 4.8/5

Next, we indulged in the Hai Zhou, a substantial dish featuring plump prawns wrapped in crispy beancurd skin. The prawns were succulent, bursting with natural sweetness, while the beancurd skin added a satisfying crunch to each bite.

MaMaJacKichenette14
Bakwan Kepiting 5/5

One of the standout dishes was the Bakwan Kepiting, a meatball soup packed with depth and robust flavours. The generously sized meatball was juicy and tender, enhanced by the addition of crabmeat, which imparted a delightful seafood sweetness. The bamboo shoots added a layer of texture and flavour to the dish.

MaMaJacKichenette17
Brandy Cincalok Ayam 4.8/5

A highlight of the evening was the Brandy Cincalok Ayam, a unique Peranakan creation that surprised and delighted my taste buds. The combination of cincalok, a traditional fermented shrimp paste, with brandy brought a new depth of flavour to the tender chicken, resulting in a deliciously unique culinary experience.

MaMaJacKichenette21
Nonya Chap Chye 4.8/5

The Nonya Chap Chye was executed flawlessly, with the various ingredients retaining their crunch and the fermented soybean imparting a distinct savoury note that elevated the dish's overall taste.

MaMaJacKichenette22
Mengkabo (Babi Masak Asam) 4.2/5

Mengkabo, also known as Babi Masak Asam, was another standout dish on the menu. The tender pork slices were cooked in a spicy and tangy sauce, tantalising the palate with their robust flavours. We were even encouraged to enjoy the dish with cut green chilli for an added dimension of enjoyment.

MaMaJacKichenette25
Assam Pedas Stingray 4/5

The Assam Pedas Stingray, a classic fish stew, is further impressed with its tangy and spicy profile. The addition of pineapple lent a fruity sweetness that beautifully complemented the tender stingray.

MaMaJacKichenette28
Panna Cotta Chendol

We savoured the Panna Cotta Chendol for dessert, a delightful conclusion to our meal. The homemade chendol, sea coconut, corn, and red beans were immersed in a thick and creamy coconut milk infused with the rich sweetness of Gula Melaka. While the dish was served without ice to allow the natural flavours to shine, I preferred it chilled for a more refreshing experience.

Mama Jac's Kitchenette Private Dining provided an enchanting culinary journey through Cantonese-Peranakan cuisine. The meticulously prepared dishes showcased a harmonious blend of flavours and textures, with each course leaving a lasting impression. Mama Jac's passion for her craft was evident in every dish, making this private dining experience a memorable and satisfying exploration of unique flavours and cultural influences.

Nan Yang Dao (南洋岛) @ Serangoon Central - Authentic And Affordable Malaysian-Style Dishes In Serangoon

Photo 6-11-22, 2 11 01 PM

Photo 6-11-22, 2 10 43 PM

Nan Yang Dao (南洋岛), a vibrant eatery offering Malaysian-style dishes, opened earlier this year. It is located within Serangoon Central and just a short walk away from Serangoon MRT. The popular eatery has seen crowds throughout the year, especially during meal times to get a taste of their extensive variety of authentic Malaysian classics.

Photo 6-11-22, 2 21 43 PM
3 Layers Coffee 4/5

We kickstarted the meal with a cup of 3 Layers Coffee ($3). This layered drink was initially inspired by Sarawak's famous '3 Layer Tea. As for the coffee version, the drink consists of three layers of black coffee, palm sugar, and evaporated unsweetened milk. Perfectly milky without being overly sweet, it is great for coffee drinkers who prefer their coffee to be milkier and sweeter.

Photo 6-11-22, 2 29 30 PM
Penang Fried Kway Teow 4.2/5

The Penang Fried Kway Teow ($6.80) is one of their signatures. The Penang's rendition has lesser soy sauce and boasts a nice wok hei aroma. The pork lard gave the dish an extra oomph and comes with essential ingredients like Chinese sausages, bean sprouts, fish cakes and prawns.

Photo 6-11-22, 2 33 56 PM
Selayang Big Bowl Curry Noodle 4.2/5

Another signature is their Selayang Big Bowl Curry Noodle ($9.90). It arrives in a giant bowl of curry mee while a plate contains the excess curry broth at the bottom to depict the overflowing goodness. The rich curry broth is fragrant and slightly spicy and comes loaded with pork belly, prawns, beancurd skin, meatball, and fishball.

Photo 6-11-22, 2 29 48 PM
Dry Curry Mee 4/5

We also tried the Dry Curry Mee ($6.90), where yellow noodles are doused in a robust and creamy curry sauce and topped with char siu slices and french beans, along with tau pok and shredded chicken. Like the Selayang Big Bowl Curry Noodle, the spiciness was slightly tamer, but the dishes were still very satisfying.

Photo 6-11-22, 2 26 46 PM
Hometown Prawn Paste Fried Chicken 4.2/5

The Prawn Paste Fried Chicken ($10.80), better known as 'Har Cheong Gai', is crisp on the outside and succulent on the inside, with a pleasant prawn paste aroma. The wings packed a punch full of flavours from its special shrimp paste batter.

Photo 6-11-22, 3 03 39 PM
Chendol 4.5/5

To end off the meal on a sweet note, we had the Chendol ($3.50). It has a good amount of gula melaka without being overly sweet and has a nice brown sugar and coconut fragrance. The generous amount of red beans and chewy green jelly toppings also added a nice textural contrast to the dessert.

Avenue 87 @ Amoy Street - The Second Edition Tasting Menu And A Cosy Cocktail Den

Avenue87-5

I visited Avenue 87 when it first opened its doors in September 2020. Fast forward to now, a year later, the duo co-Chef-Founders Glen Tay and Alex Phan presents a brand new tasting menu and a new bar. The tasting menu is available in five and seven courses ($98++ and $142++).

Avenue87-9
Trio of Snacks 4/5

Our dinner starts with a Trio of Snacks - Kueh Pie Tee, Prawn Sphere and Camembert. The second iteration of the Kueh Pie Tee is a vegetarian adaption of rojak, which comprises cucumber, green apple, turnip, sesame seeds and crispy shallots tossed in rojak balsamic sauce. Get a burst of umami flavours from the prawn sphere inspired by the local prawn noodle soup. The green mango chutney further accentuates the soft and creamy Camembert.

Avenue87-16
Amberjack 4/5

Our first course is Amberjack marinated with sesame oil and ponzu, served with ribbons of kohlrabi, sesame powder, mustard sorbet, and garnished with banana shallot chips. The sesame oil and powder lends a touch of familiarity and brightens the refreshing course.

Avenue87-20
Tofu 3.5/5

The Tofu course is inspired by the local heritage dish - Tao Kwa Bao. Avenue 87's rendition comes in double-fried pressed tofu stuffed with Japanese cucumber, OmniMeat, shallots, garlic, slivers of red radish, and oolong tea braised quail egg. It is finished with a luscious braise reduction.

Avenue87-21
Monkey Head 4/5

The Monkey Head course comes in the form of a Do-It-Yourself Mala Hot Pot. Diners can have a little fun picking up the individually packed reduced bone broth and house-made mala oil and pour them into the ceramic pot of distilled broth. Next, add the platter of monkey head mushroom, cordyceps mushrooms, shark's fin melon, and hairy gourd into the broth. The soup is light and refreshing. Though slight spicy, it is not mala numbing, allowing the diners to enjoy the lovely ingredients.

Avenue87-28
Daikon 4/5

The Daikon course is the chefs' recreation of the local black and white carrot cake. The fried housemade radish cake is topped with XO Sauce, pan-seared Hokkaido scallops, and served with mussel squid ink sauce and butter yuzu foam. I enjoyed the crispy exterior of the radish cake, while the mussel squid ink sauce reminds me of the dark sauce used in fried black carrot cake.

Avenue87-34
Beef Short Ribs 4.5/5

Our main course is USDA Prime Beef Short Ribs served with garlic fried rice, spring onions tossed in sesame oil, and an orange reduction on the side. It is a gastronomic delight with the tender meat glazed with house blend char siew sauce made with fermented beancurd and five spice powder.

Avenue87-38
Pre-dessert 3/5

Pre-dessert is Osmanthus Jelly with Pomelo, Goji Berries and Plum Powder. Unfortunately, I didn't quite enjoy it. I was hoping for something sweeter and more refreshing to prepare me for dessert.

Avenue87-40
Coconut 3.5/5

We wrapped up our dinner with two desserts - Coconut and Taro. Both desserts are creative takes of our local favourites - Chendol and Orh Nee. Served in a glass, the Coconut comes in layers of adzuki beans, gula jawa, coconut risotto rice and pandan jelly topped with corn espuma rice puffs. Have all the layers of flavours together, and you will get that familiar characteristic of the local chendol.

Avenue87-26
Taro 4/5

As for the Taro, the orh nee dessert is presented in the form of yam puree and ice cream, served with roasted butternut roasted pumpkin squash, rum-infused gingko nuts, pumpkin seed financier and olive oil caviar.

Avenue87Interior-7

Hidden and can only access by the back of the restaurant is Lounge at Avenue 87, a speakeasy bar on level 2 of the restaurant. The new bar exudes cool and relaxed vibes with velvety dark green tones and glossy finishes. Deep forest green walls are complemented with wooden panels, while the dark cement screed reflects light streaming in from the French windows. A sleek black granite bar counter stretches across the black marbled bar, running parallel to the easy lounge seating of green leather sofa and wooden coffee tables. Next to the French windows at the end of the lounge is a cosy alcove of a spacious U-shaped sofa and coffee tables.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

BondingKitchen5
Kueh Pie Tie 4/5

BondingKitchen8

We started with the Kueh Pie Tie ($12 for 4pc). Diners can have some fun piecing the kueh pie tee together. Chef Danny handmakes each crispy shell to how the braised turnips, prawns, quail eggs and crispy lard bits, topped with Chef's speciality chilli cuka sauce.

BondingKitchen16
Pong Tauhu 4.2/5

A heart-warming soup on the menu is the Pong Tauhu ($10 per pax). The thick and rich broth is a concoction of superior stock and prawn stock. The highlight is the handcrafted meatball made from chopped pork collar, pork belly, pork fat, shrimps and soft tofu.

BondingKitchen9
Nasi Goreng Buah Keluak 4/5

BondingKitchen18

For the carbo intake, I would recommend the Nasi Goreng Buah Keluak ($15). The fluffy rice stir-fried in buah keluak paste gives it an aromatic, earthy notes complemented by the fragrant eggs and fried shallots. You can go for the Blue Butterfly Pea Rice for those that don't like the acquire flavour of the buah keluak.

BondingKitchen10
Chap Chye 4.5/5

I love my Chap Chye, and this is one of the best I have tried. My criteria of a good chap chye, the vegetables still need to have a crunch, and I need to taste the fermented bean paste.

BondingKitchen14
Hokkien Lor Ark 4/5

The Hokkien Lor Ark ($22) is not a dish I have seen at Peranakan restaurant. Chef Danny has adapted the recipe from his wife's mother. Simmered in a blend of spices and soya sauce, the braised duck is cooked to a fork tender texture and has an intense flavour.

BondingKitchen12
Wagyu Beef Rendang 4.5/5

A crowd favourite is the Wagyu Beef Rendang ($32). The version here the dry style using a traditional cooking method without the addition of water. Using Australian wagyu beef ribs, it simmered over 5 hours, allowing the rempah flavours to be absorbed. It is then topped with fried crunchy coconut shavings for an explosion of flavours.

BondingKitchen21
Udang Sambal Petai 4.2/5

Another beautiful dish on the menu is the Udang Sambal Petai ($22). It is a two in one dish where diners can enjoy the huge and crunchy prawn, as well as the acquire petai tossed in fragrant sambal.

BondingKitchen25
Sotong Masak Hitam 4.2/5

One of my all-time favourite Peranakan dishes is Sotong Masak Hitam ($20). It has the characteristic flavours I love, but it has an elevated tanginess, almost as if lime juice was added.

BondingKitchen24
Barramundi Fish Assam Pedas 4.5/5

The other dish I enjoyed a lot is the Barramundi Fish Assam Pedas ($26). The fish fillet is cooked in a spicy and tangy  gravy infused with lemongrass, ginger flower, and laksa leaf. You can also find brinjal, pineapple, cherry tomatoes and ladies' finger in the sea of red.

BondingKitchen27
Chendol 4/5

For dessert, I have the Chendol ($7). A sweet and icy treat doused in fragrant gula melaka with handmade green pandan jelly, red beans and kidney beans.
