Tai Lok Claypot Chicken Rice @ Alexandra Food Village - Formerly From Margaret Drive Food Centre

TaiLokCLaypotChickenRice6

Tai Lok Claypot Chicken Rice may sounds familiar to some. The stall used to be at Margaret Drive Food Centre and moved to Alexandra Food Village when the building was demolished. I remembered I reviewed the stall back in 2010 when I started blogging. It is almost a decade, and I am glad that they are still around.

TaiLokCLaypotChickenRice10

The pricing of the claypot rice is based on the servicing portion. I had the claypot rice for 2 pax which costs me $12. The other pricing is $18, $23 and $28 respectively for 3, 4 to 5 pax. I usually add extra chicken for my claypot rice, and that cost me an additional $5.

TaiLokCLaypotChickenRice7

If you did not pre-order, be prepared to wait for around 30 to 45 minutes. As you can see from the photo, for $17 ($12 plus $5 for extra chicken),  I get a pot of claypot rice brimming with ingredients. It comes with chunky pieces of tender chicken, Chinese sausage, liver sausage and vegetables.

TaiLokCLaypotChickenRice8

Give the fragrant rice a good toss in the dark soy sauce for the sweet, savoury finishing. I would recommend drizzle a bit of oil into the claypot rice, for that lift in the aroma as well as giving the rice a smooth texture. Not to forget their chilli sauce. It is really power and shiok.

TaiLokCLaypotChickenRice2

Besides the claypot chicken rice, the stall also sells several soup dishes to go along with the rice. I had the Peanut and Chicken Feet Soup ($3.50) which is really flavourful, packed with the essence of the ingredients, boiled for hours. The other soups available on the menu are Watercress with Pork Rib Soup, Old Cucumber with Pork Rib Soup, Preserved Vegetable with Duck Meat Soup, Herbal Black Chicken Soup and Pig Stomach with Pork Rib Soup.

Rasa Hakka Restaurant @ Taman Sri Tebrau [Johor Bahru, Malaysia] - My Go To Place For Thunder Tea

RasaHakka1

A decade ago, I chanced upon Rasa Hakka Restaurant when visiting our neighbour across the causeway, and since then, whenever possible it will be one of the pit stops for my meals. Years back, when someone asked what would be my last meal on earth, I was never certain. As I age and settle into myself, the answer found its way to me. It would be Ham Cha. Most of you probably know it as Lei Cha aka Thunder Rice Tea, terms that I got acquainted with much later in life. It's a dish filled with memories of me helping my mum with the pounding and grinding of the tea leaves, peanuts, in a round wooden vessel with a wooden pestle before we proceeded to a more conventional stone bowl and grinder, then to the current blender. Trust me, the taste is not the same. Anyway, I don't remember a moment that I have never like it, even as a kid and it just satisfies me so much to have a real good one.

RasaHakka10
Rice Wine Chicken 3.5/5

I brought my parents there this time round to have a taste of their other dishes. My dad chose the Rice Wine Chicken (RM$18 small) straight away. The soul lies with the rice wine of course, and for those who have not ever tasted homemade rice wine before, I must say you are truly lucky. It is a lost trade, at least, till I learn it from my mum. Soon I hope. My dad's instant response towards this dish was "your grandma's one is more fragrant". It was decent enough to satisfy our cravings but the flaw I guess comes from the fact that the dish was not prepared a la minute, and so the flavours of the chicken and the wine didn't fully bind together.

RasaHakka5
Yong Tau Foo 3/5

I grew up in a family where Yong Tau Foo is made from scratch. Mum will painstakingly scrap the fish meat off from the skin and bones and fill in the ingredients one by one. Those ready-made with white fish paste that shriveled under heat, my mum basically scorns them. At Rasa Hakka, you can pick and choose the Yong Tau Foo at RM$1.80 per piece , coupled with rice or noodles. I would suggest choosing noodles over rice when having Yong Tau Foo in Malaysia for a change. The handmade noodles with the minced meat is really quite delicious. I find the soup here one of the better ones. For the past few times I came, it was consistently sweet with a depth of savouriness. I thought it was even tastier this time round but the Yong Tau Foo itself sadly was less enjoyable. Although they were made of real meat, the meat was too compact and lacked juiciness from elements like water chestnut bits. The saving grace was the add-on noodles.

RasaHakka7
Thunder Rice Tea 4/5

And of course, my favourite Lei Cha. There are 3 options - White Rice, Brown Rice and Full Vegetables, small or large. I always go for the Full vegetables (RM$12 large) which comes with a bigger bowl of tea too. I don't think the taste of it has changed much over the 10 years, just that they no longer served black-eye peas. Perhaps you could share with me which stalls still serve that. The vegetables here are neither too salty or bland, nor oily. The cai pok has a balanced of sweet and saltiness, hence even though it may seem quite a big scoop, it flavours the entire bowl just right. My favourite part is the generous portion of mani cai, which to me is one of the leading characters to an authentic bowl of Lei Cha, next to peanuts and cai pok. Because it is such a laborious task to prep this vegetables, you will only see this mani cai in independent food stalls in Singapore. I love their tea too, nicely seasoned and rich enough with tea leaves and herbs.

RasaHakka8

Other everyday Hakka dishes include Deep Fried Pork Belly, Steamed Pork with Preserved Mustard. Within walking distance from KSL shopping mall, Rasa Hakka Restaurant serves well as a fuss-free dining option and a good alternative if you want to take a break from your usual pit stops.

Maxwell Hakka Handmade Yong Tau Foo @ Maxwell Food Centre - Go Early Before Their Chee Cheong Fun Yong Tau Foo Gets Sold Out

MaxwellHakkaYTF5

Maxwell Hakka Handmade Yong Tau Foo has recently set foot at Maxwell Food Centre, specialising in Hakka style Yong Tau Foo. Ingredients are handmade, notably their special fish paste with carrot slices and the soup broth prepared with pork bones, radish, ikan bilis and soy beans.

MaxwellHakkaYTF4

One look at the ingredients stuffed with their special fish paste and you will know they are indeed different from the commercial 'snowwhite' version. They are prepared fresh daily to ensure quality, mostly done by the owner, Vincent himself with a bit of help from his aunt on weekdays and co-owner Alex will be around on weekends to share the load as well. He learnt the skills from his uncle and took him about a year before coming out on this own. Although stories of giving corporate jobs and switching to hawkerpreneurship are not new these days but they are still very much inspiring to listen to, especially when it is not big and fancy about dreams and what not, but very much rooted to changing a source of livelihood, like how hawkers started off back then. I also like to see how their loved ones root for them and support them in different ways. Kindness makes the world go round.

MaxwellHakkaYTF3

Back to the food. Another key aspect of Yong Tau Foo is the sauces. At Maxwell Hakka Handmade Yong Tau Foo, their chilli sauce and sweet sauce are concocted with their own recipes as well, including the sesame oil drizzled on the dry Yong Tau Foo.

MaxwellHakkaYTF14
Chee Cheong Fun Yong Tau Foo 3.8/5

The most popular item here that often gets sold out is the freshly steamed Chee Cheong Fun Yong Tau Foo ($4) and I can see why is that so. The chilli and sweet sauce go naturally well with chee cheong fun and when served alongside with other ingredients. This bowl of 'chunky' ingredients of different textures and bites is quite satisfying to eat. I would imagine for somebody who often have chee cheong fun as breakfast or snack, this is a perfect combination for a brunch. And for such a hearty bowl, it is only $4.

MaxwellHakkaYTF7
Dry Yong Tau Foo 3.8/5

The Dry Yong Tau Foo comes with their special sesame oil, giving a dash of flavour to the plain Bee Hoon. Hence, I do suggest having your bee hoon or noodles at the side for the extra enjoyment.

MaxwellHakkaYTF11

One of Alex's own creations is the Fried Egg in which he halved the egg, laid the fish paste and fried it. The usual ones would be frying the entire egg without any stuffing, this definitely takes more effort.

MaxwellHakkaYTF9
Yong Tau Foo Soup 3.8/5

The soup here is really tasty - light but has the depth and sweetness. Hence the Yong Tau Foo Soup ($3.80) is what I will go for. As for the ingredients, I enjoy both the non-fried and fried beancurd with fish paste, as well as the brinjal and bitterguord. The sliced carrots in the fish paste stood out in most of the ingredients, adding texture and sweetness to the well seasoned stuffing. Both the brinjal and bittergourd could be better if they were of thicker slices. One could appreciate the fish paste more as the ingredients tend to shrink and get abit oily when fried. The Green Chilli YTF is quite yummy too, as the sweetness of the carrot does help to ease the sharpness of the chilli.

MaxwellHakkaYTF1

Growing up eating my mum's Yong Tau Foo and seeing her making each ingredient from scratch, like any hawker dish, dishing out a bowl of a decent Yong Tau Foo is not easy. They have done a pretty good job, with quality ingredients and conviction to get it right. Maxwell Hakka Handmade Yong Tau Foo is quite secluded at the last row near to the construction side hence do keep a look out for it if you often get your lunch from Maxwell Food Centre. They are open on weekends too.

China Whampoa Home Made Noodle @ Whampoa Makan Place - Popular Ban Mian Stall That Needs To Queue More Than Half An Hour

ChinaWhampoaHandMadeNoodle16

After trying a couple of popular ban mian stalls such like Poon Nah City Handmade Noodle and
L32 Geylang Handmade Noodles, my next ban mian hunt brought me to China Whampoa Home Made Noodle at Whampoa Makan Place & Market. Apparently this is very popular and you may end up queuing more than half an hour to try the noodle dishes.

ChinaWhampoaHandMadeNoodle18
Homemade Yu Mee with Prawn Soup 4/5

For the soup version, we ordered the Homemade Yu Mee with Prawn Soup ($4/$5) and Homemade Mee Hoon Kueh with Prawn Soup ($4/$5). The texture of the homemade noodles is cooked to an enjoyable texture that still retains a bite to it. For the soup, it is the clear type with a very sweet note. It is understand that their soup is made from ikan bilis and soya beans only, without pork bones.

ChinaWhampoaHandMadeNoodle21
Homemade Mee Hoon Kueh with Prawn Soup 4/5

Unique here is the used of mani cai or sweet leaf, giving the soup the additional boost in sweetness. You can also find marinated minced pork balls, that is tender and flavourful. Unlike some ban mian stalls, the bowl of noodle does not come with egg.

ChinaWhampoaHandMadeNoodle11
Homemade Ban Mian Dry 4.2/5

ChinaWhampoaHandMadeNoodle14

The Dry Ban Mian ($4/$5) stood out more than the soup version for me. Give the handmade noodle a good toss in the dark soy sauce and chilli sauce, coating each strand of the noodle. While the soup version is more about the character of the soup, the dry version with its delectable sauces, showcases the texture of the noodle more.

IMG_1151

Overall China WHampoa Home Made Noodle dishes out a good bowl of ban mian but it is not my favourite. I prefer those soup based that is richer and more robust with the strong ikan bilis flavour in it and I want my egg.

Famous Ah Long Pancake.Popiah @ Sultan Plaza - But It Is Their Popiah That I'm After

20180209_124527_HDR

Popiah is something that I can have every other day. I used to have weekly meeting at Aliwa Street and Famous Ah Long Pancake's popiah at Sultan Plaza was always a meal that I looked forward to.

20180320_103058_HDR
Chicken Floss Salad Popiah 4.2/5

Though my workplace is no longer there, I would still patronize them as and when I have yoga classes as my studio is in the vicinity. What I crave for, is their Chicken Floss Salad Popiah ($1.80). Made with chilled shredded turnips, if you have that before a meal, it serves somewhat like an appertiser, especially when your taste buds are dulled by the humid weather. Full of crunchy elements in there besides the turnips, there are shredded cucumbers, fresh coral lettuce and of course the quintessential ground peanuts and the crispy bits. This summer salad popiah does look a bit raw compared to its regular counterpart but the spread of mayonnaise that replaces the sweet sauce soothes out all the raw edges of the vegetables.

20180320_103008_HDR

Chicken floss and mayonnaise make one of the best teams. The floss being dry and salty, while the latter is creamy and sweet, which is why this popiah is always at the top of my list! And what I appreciate is that each popiah is compact with ingredients, when many others are loose and simply drenched with sweet sauce and over-seasoned turnips. One thing that is less perfect is the skin, which tends to be a bit stiff but it is still very tasty once everything is put together.

20180321_120832_HDR
Pancake 4/5

Their pancakes serve the residents and office crowd here well, be it as a snack or a meal. For a meal, most go for their varieties with egg. Egg, Ham and Cheese the most popular here. Surprisingly, Egg and Cai Pok is also quite well sought after.

20180209_124425_HDR

Traditional Popiah ($1.60) is available too, which I enjoy equally. And I feel what elevates it from the rest, other than the nicely cooked turnips, is the addition of coriander and shredded cucumber. Details like this do make a lot of difference to the taste, and the recipe here is done right.

The Original Katong Laksa Janggut Laksa @ Queensway Shopping Centre - A Good Bowl Of Laksa Since 1950s

IMG_0579

If you are interested how The Original Katong Laksa started, you would like to read my visit to its Paya Lebar outlet. For the westie that is craving for a bowl of their laksa, the closest outlet will be The Original Katong Laksa Janggut Laksa at Queensway Shopping Centre.

IMG_0576
Laksa 4/5

Just like how the founder Mr Ng served his customers back in the 1940s, the thick beehoon is cut into short strips for easy consumption. With a good rempah cooked in coconut milk, the laksa broth is creamy and mildly spiced. The laksa comes with slices of fish cake, cockles, laksa leaves and a dollop of sambal chilli.

IMG_0582

I also noted that the price has increased. A bowl of Laksa starts from $4.50 for small portion. Medium portion is $5.50 and Large is $6.50. A slight different is the broth here, maybe it is a new batch as I find the broth not as fragrant as the one I had at the Paya Lebar outlet.

Poon Nah City Handmade Noodle @ City Plaza - Popular Ban Mian But Not My Favourite

PoonNahCity4

When I reviewed about L32 Geylang Handmade Noodles, a follower asked me to check out Poon Nah City Handmade Noodle at City Plaza. Hence I specially made a trip down to check the ban mian located in the food court on the top of City Plaza. It is quite a small food court with narrow walkway. It offers a variety of noodle dishes as well as deep fried items.

PoonNahCity1

After browsing the extensive menu, I decided to try the Prawn Ban Mian Dry ($3.50) and Fish Maw Ban Mian Soup ($3.50). Besides the prawn an fish maw, it offers other ingredients such scallop, abalone and sliced fish noodle.

PoonNahCity10
Prawn Ban Mian Dry 3.5/5

The Prawn Ban Mian Dry ($3.50) comes with prawn, minced pork, wolfberry leaves and ikan bilis. The handmade noodle has a bouncy texture which has a delectable bite. That is probably the full stop as I didn't find the sweet sauce and chilli have that punch that make the bowl of noodle exceptional.

PoonNahCity7
Fish Maw Ban Mian Soup 3/5

PoonNahCity9

As for the soup version, I decided to have the Fish Maw Ban Mian Soup ($3.50). It usually come with pork, chicken and seafood but fish maw is rather rare. Hence I decided to order a bowl to try. Once again, I enjoyed the texture of the noodle. I can't deny the handmade noodle here is really good but they need to work on the other components. Just like the dry version, the soup is tasteless, it lacks the depth and sweetness of the ikan bilis.

IMG_0605

While I didn't find the ban mian here as good as L32 Geylang Handmade Noodles, it seems that the stall has its loyal followings judging from the crowd. I guess I have a heavy palate and prefer flavours that is rich and heavy. I checked against some reviews online and it seems their standards have declined over the years.

Bai Nian Niang Dou Fu (百年酿豆腐) @ Viva Business Park - Handmade Yong Tau Foo That Always Has A Long Queue

BaiNianNiangDouFu24

Bai Nian Niang Dou Fu (百年酿豆腐) which has its flagship stall at Albert Centre Food Centre has extended its business and opened branches at People's Park Food Centre and Viva Business Park in Chai Chee. The queue at their flagship stall has always been long, hence it is good that they have expanded their business allowing many patrons to try their handmade Niang Dou Fu. During my visit to the Viva Business Park branch, there was already a queue when I reached there.

BaiNianNiangDouFu12
Niang Dou Fu Soup 4.2/5

BaiNianNiangDouFu14

A bowl of the Niang Dou Fu Soup ($5.50) comes with 7 different pieces of bite size Niang Dou Fu and noodles. In it, you can find prawn ball, pork ball, bitter gourd, beancurd, white, black and gold beancurd rolls stuffed with pork, fish, prawn and squid filling. All these are freshly made and cooked on the spot. The highlight among the various ingredients is actually the prawn roll that is made from tiger prawn flesh. It has an enjoyable bouncy texture. The soup itself is light and tasty.

BaiNianNiangDouFu21
Niang Dou Fu Dry 4/5

BaiNianNiangDouFu23

Besides the soup version, the stall also offers the dry version. Similar to the soup version, the dry version comes with the 7 different handmade niang dou fu. Replacing the soup, is the sweet sauce and chilli sauce. Personally I prefer the soup version as the sweetness of the sauce kind of masked the appreciation of the ingredients.

BaiNianNiangDouFu18
Chicken Wing 3.5/5

You can complete your meal with the Chicken Wing ($6 for 4pc). I like the honesty that I get 4 drumette and 4 wingette. Some stalls probably only get you 2 of each, which is actually only 2 chicken wings. Over here, you get the 4 whole chicken wings for $6. The wings are big and juicy too. I can taste five spices in the crispy batter, which is quite flavourful. However the crust from the batter is a bit too tough.

Mei Xi Kitchen @ Clementi Ave 3 - Selling Hakka Yong Tau Foo And Seafood Soups

IMG_8069

I seldom dine at Bgain 442 Eating House at Clementi Ave 3 so I am not sure whether Mei Xi Kitchen is new or not. It is definitely new for me as I don't remember seeing it previously. At the front of the stall, it sells Hakka Yong Tau Foo but if you go to the side (inside the coffeeshop), it sells a variety of seafood soup (Crayfish Grouper, Batang, Dory Fish) while sharing the same place.

IMG_8071
Batang Seafood Soup 3/5

I decided to order the Batang Seafood Soup which comes with slices of Batang fish, prawn, tomato,  mushroom and minced pork. I understand the soup base is from boiling old chicken and scallop. However it taste rather light, lacking depth and robustness.

IMG_8074

IMG_8075

While the soup was rather weak in terms of taste, the seafood was fresh and good. As for the minced pork, it is well marinated and flavourful. They have added dry sole fish to elevate the flavour. However, it has an unpleasant fibrous texture.

IMG_8055

Overall I think the stall still has rooms for improvement. More effort is needed in the making the soup base to make it more flavourful. Currently it just taste like bowl of normal soup with ingredients thrown in.
