Dulukala Peranakan @ Silat Avenue - The Family-Run Eatery at Beauty World Makes A Comeback After 7 Years Hiatus

DulukalaPeranakan22

Dulukala-2

Dulukala Peranakan is a family-run Peranakan eatery serving homecooked-style Nonya dishes, crafted from heirloom recipes passed down through generations. Having spent over 20 years at Beauty World since 1999, the eatery recently reopened at Silat Avenue after a 7-year hiatus. Deviating from its previous standalone restaurant format, Dulukala Peranakan now operates as a Cze Char stall at Kopi Haus, reaching a wider audience seeking authentic Nonya flavours.

DulukalaPeranakan5
Nyonya Stewed Mix Vegetables 4/5

The Nyonya Stewed Mix Vegetables ($14.80) was a simple dish done right, flavoursome yet light enough for everyday enjoyment. The cabbage was well braised. It was tender but still retaining a pleasant bite. While satisfying in taste, the price point feels steep given the casual kopitiam setting.

DulukalaPeranakan24
Ikan Assam Pedas 4.2/5

The Ikan Assam Pedas ($18.80) was a delight with its piquant, tangy Assam gravy. The fish was delightfully fresh, steamed perfectly to a moist texture, complemented by the robust spiced sauce.

DulukalaPeranakan11
Ayam Buah Keluak 4.2/5

The Ayam Buah Keluak ($15.80) featured succulent chicken with a rich, bold, and savoury gravy. The keluak nuts were notably more bittersweet and nutty than versions I’ve tried before, giving the dish a pronounced intensity that made it memorable.

DulukalaPeranakan17
Bakwan Kepeting Soup 3/5

The Bakwan Kepeting Soup ($13.80) offered a lighter option. The homemade crab and pork meatballs were soft and juicy, but lacked the desired springy texture. I also find the broth slightly watered down and somewhat salty.

DulukalaPeranakan2
Sotong Hitam 3/5

The Sotong Hitam ($15.80) featured sliced squid in a squid ink sauce. The sotong itself was tender and chewy, but the expected flavours of umami, brininess, and subtle acidity were rather muted, leaving the dish less punchy than we hoped for.

Dulukala-1

Just four months into settling at their new Silat Avenue space, regulars are already flocking in to savour the familiar, comforting flavours of their Peranakan dishes. Some of the beloved specialities require at least three days' advance notice, so be sure to reserve early to avoid disappointment.

San Xiang Bak Chor Mee (叁香肉脞面) @ ABC Brickwoods Food Centre - A Bold Bowl of Vinegar-forward Bak Chor Mee

SanXiangBCM-6

SanXiangBCM-13

It has been a while since I last revisited ABC Brickworks Food Centre, and during my recent visit, I was delighted to stumble upon San Xiang Bak Chor Mee, a new addition that has popped up since my previous trip. Naturally, I had to give it a try.

SanXiangBCM-26

SanXiangBCM-19
Bak Chor Mee (Meepok) 4.2/5

I went for the classic Bak Chor Mee ($4/$5/$6), choosing mee pok as my noodle base. The bowl was comforting and familiar, served with a hearty mix of minced pork, pork liver, meatball, and fishball. Each ingredient held its own, especially the liver, which was cooked just right, tender and not overdone. The real highlight, though, was the sauce. The punchy sambal base carried a bold, vinegary tang. It tied everything together beautifully, coating the springy noodles for a mouthful of umami and spice with every bite.

SanXiangBCM-24
Bak Chor Mee (Mee Sua) 4/5

My dining companion opted for the mee sua version. The rice vermicelli was soft and comforting, absorbing the sauce well without becoming mushy. There was a distinct rice aroma that added a touch of depth. While the mee sua made for a gentler, more delicate bowl, the mee pok offered better textural contrast and held up stronger against the assertive flavours of the sambal.

SanXiangBCM-20

San Xiang Bak Chor Mee is a solid addition to the lineup at ABC Brickworks. The flavours are bold, the ingredients are fresh, and the portions are satisfying. If you’re a fan of a vinegar-forward Bak Chor Mee, this stall is definitely worth a try.

Verandah Rooftop Rotisserie @ Momentus Hotel Alexandra - Verandah Rooftop Rotisserie x Blue Smoke Four Hands Buffet Experience

IMG_5288

Verandah Rooftop Rotisserie at Momentus Hotel Alexandra is elevating its buffet dining experience through a unique and limited-time collaboration with Blue Smoke, a local BBQ and smokehouse led by Executive Chef Ivan Yeo. Running from 1 to 31 July 2024, the weekend buffet dinner will feature an exquisite spread that highlights the best of both Momentus Hotel Alexandra’s Executive Chef Jeffrey Tan and the award-winning Executive Chef Ivan Yeo from Blue Smoke.

IMG_5264
Smoked Garam Masala Beef Tomahawk

Among the many highlights of this buffet, the Smoked Garam Masala Beef Tomahawk was a rare treat. This dish features beef tomahawk marinated with garam masala, smoked for approximately an hour, and then grilled to a medium-rare finish.

IMG_5271
Grilled Tamarind Barramundi

My personal favourite was the Grilled Tamarind Barramundi. Zested up with a thick tamarind paste, the fish was incredibly moist and tender. The smoky nuances combined with the tangy paste add a depth of flavor to the natural sweetness of the fish.

IMG_5210
Charred Napa Cabbage

The Charred Napa Cabbage with Smoked Garlic Aioli, while flavorful, could benefit from more thorough cooking in the middle to ensure a consistent texture.

IMG_5223
Grilled Australian Lamb Shoulder

IMG_5225
Kombu Butter Tiger Prawns

The Grilled Australian Lamb Shoulder, seasoned impeccably with herbs and spices, had a pleasing flavor, though its texture leaned towards being slightly dry. Similarly, the Kombu Butter Tiger Prawns were flavorful but a bit dry.

IMG_5229
Pork Belly Bulgogi

IMG_5230
Balinese Chicken Wings

Pork Belly Bulgogi was another tantalizing dish, with a smoky-sweet caramelization on the surface that provided a satisfying bite. The Balinese Chicken Wings were also a crowd pleaser, thanks to their well-balanced seasoning and tender meat.

IMG_5295
Green Lip Mussels

IMG_5303
Smoked Wagyu Beef Brisket

In addition to the extensive buffet spread, there is a special tasting menu featuring five curated dishes, two of which are from Blue Smoke. The Green Lip Mussels stewed in Thai green curry and smoked lychee were particularly noteworthy, with a superb punchy green curry. The 20-hour Smoked Wagyu Beef Brisket, served in crispy pie tee cups, offered an unctuous mouthfeel with the contrast of crispy bites, making it a delightful indulgence.

The highlight for me is definitely the free-flow of Jamon Iberico de Bellota, carved straight off from the ham's leg. Rich and savoury with a luscious mouthfeel, it's perfect with aperitivo of Sangria de Bienvenida that's being offered.

Seafood on Ice is also more beefed up with Boston Lobster, Pacific Oysters, Poached Sea Prawns and Sea Whelk. The cold larder counter includes a specially crafted Cured Salmon Terrine alongside the regular Charcuterie Board and Antipasti.

IMG_9920
Hand-stretched Wood-fired Sourdough Pizzas

The Hand-stretched Wood-fired Sourdough Pizzas also have Spanish-inspired flavours, such as Ham & Manchego Cheese and Chorizo Diablo.

The Hot Mains offers comforting and hearty dishes such as Live Bouchot Mussels in White Wine Saffron Sauce and Beer Braised Beef Brisket, which pair well with the Valencian Seafood Paella.

Spanish Crema Catalana

IMG_9918
Churros

The desserts didn't quite delight as much as the mains, although Spanish specialities are being offered, such as Turron de Jijona and Spanish Crema Catalana, which are very much on the sweeter side. The Churros is the one to go for.

The Marmalade Pantry @ Anchorpoint - New Outlet With New Menu-exclusives And Retail Items

IMG_4976

The Marmalade Pantry has recently launched a new outlet at Anchorpoint. For a limited time until 31 August 2023, you get to enjoy new menu-exclusive Anchorpoint Specials alongside the familiar classics of the restaurant.

IMG_4929
Fried Artichoke with Lemon Ricotta 4/5

From the outlet's exclusive menu, we started with Fried Artichoke with Lemon ($20). The Polenta-coated fried artichokes were crisped on the outside, with some of the inner petals remaining succulent and tender. The cold and zesty ricotta provided a cool and creamy contrast to the crispy artichoke.

IMG_4941
Tortilla with Mesclun Salad 3.8/5

The next appetiser was Tortilla with Mesclun Salad ($16) that was goozy within, loaded with deep-fried cubed potatoes, flavourful diced Spanish Chorizo and sweet caramelised onions. The dollop of soy-based garlic aioli added a subtle tanginess to the tortilla and further enriched the mouth feel of the dish.

IMG_4952
Pork Cheek and Carrot Puree 3.5/5

For mains, we had Pork Cheek and Carrot Puree ($28), served with roasted cabbage, tamarind, and ginger carrot puree. The texture of the braised pork cheek could be more tender, but overall they were nicely flavoured and enjoyable. A notable element of this dish is the sweet-sour tamarind and ginger carrot puree, which helped cut through the meat's richness.

IMG_4954
Black Pepper Seafood Spaghetti 4/5

Black Pepper Seafood Spaghetti ($29) stood out with all elements done right. The black pepper sauce made with Sarawak black pepper was punchy, and the charred capsicum's fruity sweetness brought out the succulent seafood's sweetness. The seafood was at their right doneness with a good bounce, and the al dente spaghetti was a very satisfying plate of food.

IMG_4957
Duck Ragu Pappardelle 3.8/5

Duck Ragu Pappardelle ($30) was hearty with a tantalising combination of flavours - plump, sweet tomatoes punctuating the deep and rich flavours of the balsamic braised duck. The large surface of the pappardelle and its relatively rough texture made it ideal for such a robust ragu. However, the texture of the pasta could have been better.

IMG_4983
Kimchi Steak Fried Rice 3.8/5

A mainstay on the menu, Kimchi Fried Rice served with Argentinian Grass-Fed Sirloin Steak, 100g ($28) is a dish that excites the palate. The steamed rice was mouthwatering with soy sauce, sesame oil and fiery with chilli. The plancha-grilled sirloin steak had rich beefy notes, which complemented the bold flavours of the kimchi rice. However, some fresh elements as garnishes would help give this dish a more well-rounded taste.

IMG_4990
Honeycomb Poached Pear 3.8/5

The outlet's exclusive dessert is Honeycomb Poached Pear ($16). The pear was made by poaching it in an aromatic ginger flower syrup. While I wished the flavour of the ginger flower could be more pronounced, it was tender and not overly sweet. The accompanying whipped mascarpone provided a decadent creaminess, while the unassuming honeycomb gave a delectable crunch and sweetness.
