Viva Lavender @ Lavender Street – Modern European Plates, Charcoal-Grilled Meats & A Cozy Hideaway

Situated along a quieter stretch of Lavender, Viva Lavender brings together modern European flavours, house-aged meats and a breezy, welcoming space that transitions nicely from bright daytime dining to a warm, intimate evening ambience. With a strong focus on charcoal grilling and a surprisingly robust tapas/appetisers selection, the restaurant also offers one of the more attractive weekday happy hour deals in the area.

Perfect as a starter to warm up the palate, Truffle Mushroom Croquette ($8 for 2 pcs) comes crispy on the outside and creamy within. The truffle is intentionally subtle, allowing the mushroom filling to stand out without being overpowering. A comforting, easy-to-like bite.

A classic Spanish dish - Gambas Al Ajillo ($22) featuring four shrimps and toast. The house-made chilli oil adds personality, but we wished for a more potent garlic punch and more of that sizzling olive oil base to mop up with bread. Still enjoyable but could be bolder in flavour.

Padron Peppers ($16) came in a generous portion, ideal for sharing. Mildly spiced, light cream sauce on the side and topped with shaved cheese. Works well as a snack between heavier dishes or with drinks. Simple but satisfying.

One of the more memorable vegetable dishes is the Charred Cabbage ($16), where the wedges of cabbage are juicy inside, served with herb yoghurt and house chilli oil, and topped with crispy kale for texture. While delicious, smaller wedges might allow the charred flavour to develop even more deeply. Still a solid, well-balanced plate.

Known for dry ageing and grilling their meats, we were recommended the Spanish Vintage Chilled Striploin ($42/300g). It was well-seasoned and delicious with the grilled garlic, but the cut leaned a little ‘veinier’ than ideal for us. That said, it showed enough promise that we’d gladly return for their Tomahawk next time.

Fork-tender and deeply comforting, this Braised Lamb Shoulder ($36) comes with silky pomme purée and yoghurt. The flavours reminded my dining partner of a refined rendang, which is rich and aromatic. Best shared, as the dish becomes quite heavy after several bites.

A standout for me is the Miso Black Cod ($45) - buttery, silky, and melts instantly - complemented by a luscious tobiko beurre blanc that adds brininess and depth. A dish we would order again without hesitation.

Another favourite of the night is the Saffron Risotto with Hokkaido Scallop ($38), which was exceptionally fresh, and the ponzu pearl rice carries beautiful umami with each spoonful. A luxurious, well-executed entrée.

Viva Lavender runs a Monday–Thursday Happy Hour (3–8pm):

• 1-for-1 cocktails from $15
• Housepour wines at $10/glass
• Beer Bucket at $35 for 5 bottles

We tried four cocktails, including their Hot Yuzu Margarita, Negroni, Espresso Martini and Mimosa, and all were surprisingly well-balanced. Definitely worth stopping by early for drinks.

Viva Lavender strikes a balance between cosy neighbourhood charm and polished modern European dining. While a few dishes could deliver a punchier flavour profile, the seafood plates and lighter tapas truly shine, making it a spot worth returning to, especially with their generous weekday Happy Hour.

The restaurant also caters well to private events and group bookings, offering two private sections: a contemporary front bar area ideal for smaller, social gatherings and a warm, semi-private rear dining space suited for seated meals or intimate celebrations. Both areas are available with a minimum spend requirement, providing flexibility depending on the group size and occasion.

665 Degrees Fahrenheit (665°F) @ Andaz Singapore - 'Tastes & Tunes', Strum Up an Unforgettable Night by Guitarist Dansen John

We had a thoroughly enjoyable night out at 665°F, which is perched on Level 38 of Andaz Singapore. Specialising in meat-centric cuisine with Southeast Asian influences, the restaurant boasts an imported PIRA oven from Barcelona. Fuelled by a mix of charcoal and wood, it reaches a searing 665 degrees Fahrenheit, imparting bold, authentic grilled flavours and the irresistible aroma of barbecue to every dish.

On this occasion, we were treated to the full experience of 665°F. First, we had our dinner in the main dining room, enjoying some of their signature dishes. Then, we adjourned to The Cellar for their 'Tastes & Tunes' experience, where guitarist Dansen John serenaded us.

The Cellar is an elegant, cosy, and dimly lit space that offers an extensive selection of Old and New World wines, all set against the stunning backdrop of Marina Bay. Within this understated, luxurious lounge setting, Dansen's soulful blend of jazz, blues, and acoustic pop creates a rich, contemporary soundscape. It's a sophisticated way to unwind, and guests can enjoy a curated selection of fine wines, small plates, and nibbles, such as sliders, olives, cheese and ham, wings, and fries. Cellar Sessions take place every Saturday from 8:30 PM onwards.

Dinner began with a serving of their warm Signature Sourdough Bread, accompanied by a seasonal dip that was especially satisfying, complemented by a touch of their freshly ground pepper.

Next, we were served a cold appetiser of Crudo of Hiramasa Kingfish and Yellowfin Tuna dressed in a zesty tomato ponzu. The dish was garnished with tomberries, crunchy pickled cucumber, and a drizzle of gamtae oil. The textures were lovely, and it made for a light, refreshing start that whets the appetite for the courses to come.

For my dining companion, who doesn't take raw fish, they thoughtfully offered a bright and refreshing Tomato Salad instead.

Next, we were served their Traditional French Onion Soup, a dish I was particularly excited about, as I absolutely love French onion soup. Presented in a deep bowl, their version featured a rich, slow-cooked onion broth that was hearty and delicious. In place of the usual croutons, it offered a local twist with crispy youtiao, topped with a golden, savoury layer of melted Gruyère cheese.

665°F Wagyu Tasting, 4.5/5

For the main event, we savoured three exceptional cuts of beef, each showcasing distinct qualities. The first was the Tajima Cross-Bred Wagyu Bavette, with a Marble Score of 4-5, offering a tender yet robust flavour with a satisfying balance of fat and meat.

Next, the Robbins Island 100% Full Blood Wagyu Tenderloin, with an impressive Marble Score of 7-8, stood out for its rich depth of flavour and melt-in-your-mouth tenderness.

Finally, the Satsuma Full Blood Wagyu Striploin, graded at Marble Score A4, was juicy and buttery, enhanced by the accompanying beef fat.

Among these cuts, the Robbins Island Full Blood Wagyu Tenderloin was our favourite! The beef was served alongside tomatoes, roasted garlic confit and a Sumac Selection of Mustards and Sauces, complementing each cut well.

We were also presented with three side dishes to accompany our wagyu tasting plate:

Potatoes are a must-have when enjoying steak, and this side dish did not disappoint. Golden and tender Roasted Yukon Potatoes were tossed with fragrant curry leaves and a touch of dried chilli.

Crispy Brussels Sprouts Sesame 3.5/5

Crisp-fried Brussels Sprouts are elevated with nutty sesame seeds, a kick of fresh jalapeño, and topped with delicate shavings of smoky bonito from Cameron Highlands.

Charred to perfection on a hot griddle, these mild Padron Peppers are served with a cooling drizzle of tangy hung yoghurt, balancing smoky heat with creamy freshness.

Whiskey-Fired Ice Cream S'more 3.8/5

For dessert, the Whiskey-Fired Ice Cream S'more is a showstopper. A cube of Madagascan Vanilla & Salted Caramel ice cream is drizzled with hot fudge sauce, then flambéed with whiskey tableside. It's served alongside a graham cookie for the perfect finish. I only wish there had been less ice cream and a bit more marshmallow and hot fudge sauce instead!

In addition to their à la carte menu, 665°F offers 3- to 5-course signature dinner sets, along with an enticing $68++ unlimited steak frites deal available on weekends and public holidays. The service here was also excellent, and the team was warm, professional, and attentive throughout our visit. It's worth checking out for a relaxing night out or a special occasion.

Big Wine Freaks @ Bukit Pasoh Road - Champagne and Wine Restaurant with Ingredient-forward Cuisine

Big Wine Freaks at Bukit Pasoh is a Champagne and wine restaurant with an outstanding wine selection that showcases labels from a new generation of star producers, natural wines from renowned French regions, and rare picks from unique micro-farms. Channelling the same electric energy as their Moscow origins, the space is brought to life by Sabrina Bignami and Alessandro Capellaro of B-Arch Architectural Bureau in Florence. It's an expressive blend of light, colour, and texture, a setting that speaks about the experience that they want to offer. Their ingredient-forward menu features a raw seafood bar, bite-sized starters, vegetables, and mains cooked over an open-fire grill.

Daily from 5.30pm to 7pm is the time for Aperitivo ($58), which I believe is the best way to soak in the atmosphere of Big Wine Freaks. We were served a Cichetti Assortment comprising Oysters, Trout Gravlax, Parma Ham, Arancini, and Padron Peppers.

There was plenty to love about this assortment. It offered a satisfying balance of cold and hot starters and, more importantly, the rich mouthfeel and savouriness that pair beautifully with their wines and Champagne. Both the Parma Ham and Trout Gravlax stood out for their indulgent textures, especially the latter, with its tangy and mustardy toast and delicate ribbons of gravlax that paired perfectly with the glass of Gounel-Lassalle Esprit Voyager we had.

The Arancini were well executed too. Encased in a crisp golden crust was a molten mixture of rice, mozzarella, and Jamon, made even more indulgent with the accompanying aioli. Rounding off the plate, the blistered Padron Peppers were juicy and vibrant, adding a fresh green bite that nicely balanced the lineup.

The mains feature selections from the Josper Basque Grill. The Octopus ($58) was incredibly well cooked, with a texture and flavour that stood out as one of the better renditions I've had. Unfortunately, the dish was slightly let down by an oversprinkle of finishing salt.

For the Beef Short Rib ($46), while the meat wasn't as tender as hoped, it made up for it with flavour. The caramelised, charred exterior imparted a depth and smokiness that was deeply satisfying.

Dessert was a pure joy. The fluffy Donuts, filled with berry jam and custard, were a delightful way to end the meal. While I would have preferred the custard to be a touch lighter, the overall experience was still indulgent and comforting.

There's also a noticeable attention to detail when it comes to presentation. Each dish is served on dinnerware by Ginori 1735, the renowned Florentine porcelain house now under the creative direction of Alessandro Michele. The wine-by-the-glass list is equally thoughtful, featuring over 40 rotating options that highlight fresh finds from their cellar. Every glass is served in exceptional stemware, featuring brands such as Zalto from Austria, Sydonios from France, and Kimura from Japan, which further elevates the overall experience.

Riding on the success of Sol & Luna at CapitaSpring, 1-Group opens Sol & Ora on the rooftop of The Outpost Hotel on Sentosa, bringing the allure of the Mediterranean Sea and its unique coastal culture to the shore of Singapore. It is an all-day, all-occasion gastronomic destination set on the coast.

The cheese may look like a slice of pizza, but it's Greek 'Saganaki' Cheese ($23). The Kefalotyri cheese is pan-fried and drizzled with honey. Squeeze the accompanying lemon slice to zest up the enjoyment.

A tapas originating from Barcelona, the La Bomba ($18) comes in a ball-shaped Spanish-style breaded potato with minced chicken seasoned with Baharat, paired with housemade mayonnaise and spicy tomato puree.

Cavatelli Pasta 4.2/5

Cavatelli Pasta ($28) is also known as little hollows due to the hollow shape of the pasta shells. It is a popular pasta throughout Southern Italy. I like the shape of the past, acting as a reservoir for the delicious sauce for maximum enjoyment. It is cooked with caramelised red onions, squid, crab, Amalfi lemon zest, chopped spinach, and chopped anchovies to complement the delightful pasta's texture.

If you are okay with mushy texture, you will enjoy the Imam Bayildi ($18). The eggplant flesh is removed and cooked with tomato, coriander seeds, and cinnamon before refilling it back into the cavity. It is then oven bath in wine, tomatoes, and bay leaves before scorching over wood fire. It is then topped with crumbled Persian feta cheese and rocket leaves.

Moving to the mains, we started with the Seared Red Norwegian Salmon ($32). The salmon is perfectly cooked to a moist, slight pink in the middle and crispy on the skin. It is paired with grilled fennel and Trapanese pesto and finished with lemon zest and shavings of bottarga.

Beef lovers will enjoy the Wood-fired Wagyu Bavette ($44). The Australian wagyu flank infused with smokiness is tender and juicy, paired with truffle sauce. It is served with marinated and semi-dried cherry tomatoes on the vine to cut the richness.

Great for sharing is the Sardinian Porcetto ($78). The Spanish suckling pig is brined and steamed for 24 hours and then air-dried overnight. The result is flavourful succulent meat with crackling skin. It is served together with apple and pear sauce, accompanied by charred lemon and burnt Romaine lettuce.

For dessert, we had the Spanish Churros ($16), fried upon order and then dusted with cinnamon sugar and toasted pecan nuts. It is best enjoyed together with the chocolate dip.

As for the Greek Bougatsa ($14), the filo pastry is filled with custard cream, baked and then dusted with icing sugar and served with fresh strawberries and blueberries.
