Merci Marcel @ Katong - All-day Dining of Comfort Food with a French Flair in Merci Marcel’s 4th Outlet in Singapore

IMG_0196

Merci Marcel's 4th outlet sits in the heart of Katong, their first venture into the East. Located in Santa Grand Hotel, the casual French restaurant is decked out in a fun new colonial and contemporary interior.

IMG_0192

Early birds will be happy to have another spot to enjoy as they open every day from 8am into the night. Diners can expect a French tapas menu alongside speciality coffee, curated cocktails and French wines.

IMG_0194
Drinks

A centrepiece of this new outlet is the snazzy bar offering unique and vibrant selections of cocktails.

IMG_0193
Salmon Crudo 4/5

To start, we had the Salmon Crudo ($20), which had salmon tartare on tangy pickled enoki with a dressing of cucumber gazpacho to be enjoyed with bread. I personally expected a bit more of this, but the clean flavour profile may suit if you're looking for something light.

IMG_0195
Roasted Feta 4/5

The Roasted Feta ($16) is a decent sharing plate, with the slab of cheese served on a bed of poached pear, with slices of fresh pair, rosemary and a drizzle of honey and rosemary.

IMG_0197
Ravioles de Royans 4.5/5

Merci Marcel's Ravioles de Royans ($20 for Small, $32 for Large) has been one of their most loved dishes since its opening. The adorable bites of French dumpling pasta are filled with Tête de Moine cheese, served with a creamy sauce and further topped with cheese florets.

IMG_0198

It may look unassuming, but it gets more addictive with each bite. We loved how flavourful it was with the unadulterated taste of cheese, without being overwhelming.

IMG_0199
French Mac & Cheese 4.5/5

Fans of mac & cheese got to try their rendition of French Mac & Cheese ($25). The creamy and lightly seasoned cheese macaroni is held within a buttery, flaky pastry, paired with ham chiffonnade and cheese crisps. Surprisingly, it wasn't as heavy as we thought, and we thoroughly enjoyed the variety of textures.

IMG_0200
Marcel’s Waffle Iron Style “Croiffle” 4/5

The Marcel's Waffle Iron Style "Croiffle" ($11) was recommended by our server as her favourite on the menu for desserts. There's caramel, bananas and a scoop of vanilla ice cream to accompany the croiffle. While the combination was likeable, I preferred the croiffle to be served more warmly.

IMG_0201
Chocolate & Whisky Pie 4.2/5

We ended our night with the Chocolate & Whisky Pie ($13). The crisp shortcrust pastry and mildly sweet yet rich chocolate filling will easily satisfy any chocolate lovers.

Restaurant Gaig @ Stanley Road - An Immersive Catalan Fare With New Chef’s Menu

Gaig16

Nestled in the heart of Singapore's bustling dining precinct, Restaurant Gaig brings the vibrant flavours of Catalan cuisine to the city. As the first international outpost of the original Michelin-starred restaurant in Barcelona, helmed by renowned chef Carles Gaig, Restaurant Gaig in Singapore is a testament to the rich culinary heritage of Catalonia. Operated by chef Gaig's daughter, Núria Gibert, this establishment continues the family's tradition of excellence in gastronomy, spanning five generations.

GaigRestaurant-2

At the kitchen's helm is Executive Chef Marti Carlos, who honed his skills under the tutelage of Chef Gaig himself. With a deep-rooted respect for Catalan culinary traditions, Executive Chef Marti pays homage to the region's vibrant culture and heritage while infusing his dishes with a sophisticated flair. To celebrate the magical Catalonia Summer, Restaurant Gaig presents a new Chef's Menu ($180++ per diner) that promises an immersive dining experience.

Gaig9
The Thinnest Fuet Sandwich, Sunday's Vermut, Surf and Turf Taco 4/5

The gastronomic journey begins with a trio of canapés inspired by Catalan's classic snacks and Sunday social traditions. The Thinnest Fuet Sandwich showcases a crisp and thin filo pastry filled with savoury pork cold cuts and grated tomatoes—a nostalgic favourite from Chef Marti's childhood.

Sunday's Vermut pays tribute to the Spanish tradition of enjoying vermouth with light snacks like potato chips and olives. At Restaurant Gaig, cockle, vermouth, and olive pearls are served in a fried potato shell, offering a burst of flavour in a single bite.

Another delightful creation is the Surf and Turf Taco, featuring shredded lamb ossobuco served in a shrimp fritter "taco" shell, complemented by cured shallots, Lyo corn, and green Mojo Verde dressing.

Gaig13
Homemade Raviolis 5/5

Continuing the culinary journey, the Homemade Raviolis delight with roasted lamb shoulder and scampi broth. The tender ravioli, stuffed with minced lamb leg shoulder, is beautifully accompanied by langoustine consommé, creating a harmonious balance of flavours.

Gaig17
Frit Menorqui 4.2/5

The Frit Menorquí pays homage to the Balearic Islands, presenting pan-seared lobster with sofrito and lobster bisque-infused egg yolk—a dish traditionally enjoyed during the summer months.

Gaig21
Glazed Sweetbreads and Artichoke 3.8/5

For those seeking a nose-to-tail experience, the Glazed Sweetbreads with Artichoke and Chips showcases creamy lamb sweetbreads paired with parsnip purée, glazed artichokes, and chips. It is an exquisite combination of textures and flavours.

Gaig23
Lamb Rack 4.8/5

The Chef's Menu also features a succulent Lamb Rack with idiazabal cheese sauce, where the buttery and smoky notes of the farmhouse sheep cheese elevate the roasted lamb.

Gaig27
Pre-Dessert 4/5

A pre-dessert of Smoked Chocolate with Strawberry and Basil delights the senses, with strawberry and basil ice cream accompanied by smoked chocolate ganache, chocolate crumble, and white chocolate tuile.

Gaig30
Orange Dessert 4.2/5

Concluding the remarkable culinary experience is a dessert that pairs Orange Sorbet with carrot sabayon, mandarin carrot sorbet, egg yolk ice cream, orange pearls, and sugar bits. This inventive creation showcases the versatility of oranges in various forms, leaving a bright and refreshing note on the palate.

GaigRestaurant-2

Restaurant Gaig offers an impeccable display of the best of Catalan culinary traditions. From the cherished family recipes passed down through generations to the innovative twists introduced by Chef Marti Carlos, every dish celebrates Catalonia's rich gastronomic heritage. Immerse yourself in a truly memorable dining experience that captures the essence of Catalonia at Restaurant Gaig.

Gourmet Italian Osteria (GIO) @ Tanjong Pagar - Showcases The Essence Of Traditional Italian Gastronomy With A Contemporary Approach

IMG_0710

Gourmet Italian Osteria at Tanjong Pagar is created to offer you high-quality dining experiences that you will get from an Italian restaurant in Venice or Rome. With vast experience under his belt, including being the creative director of Italian Trade Agency Pavillon at the Food and Hotel Asia 2022 in Singapore, Chef-in-House David Marchiori brought into Singapore not just genuine Italian flavours but also a taste from home. A series of 4-course set menus showcase the essence of traditional Italian gastronomy with a contemporary approach - Traditionals, Journey to Venice, Mama's Recipes and Signatures. We had the pleasure of trying out Signatures Se Menu, which serves the best of beef goodness of things.

IMG_0720
Balsamic Negroni

IMG_0724
Pizza Fritta con Chef’s Nduja e Burrata 4.5/5

The dinner started with Pizza Fritta con Chef's Nduja e Burrata, featuring a hot fried pizza base juxtaposed with cold and spreadable homemade pork salume, burrata, and spiked with fiery Calabrian chillies. Instantly transformed from a typical main to an appetiser, this fried pizza with its mouth-filling texture is the perfect accompaniment to your wines or, even better, Gio's Balsamic Negroni. I love how the cold, milky-sweet burrata harmonises the heat and savouriness of the chilli and the flavoursome pork salume.

IMG_0740
Beef Fillet Tartare 4.5/5

Our 2nd course is a Battuta di Filetto di Manzo con Zabaione al Parmigiano Reggiano e Prosciutto Chips. Chef David Marchiori believes in allowing the beef to shine. Hence GIO's Beef fillet tartare deviates from a typical steak tartare because it carries no acidity. Instead, the technique is more on amping up the savoury elements - a drizzle of Parmigiano zabaglione and brilliantly crowning the tartare with moreish prosciutto crudo chips.

IMG_0749
Beef Cheeks 4/5

The 2nd main was interesting - Guancetta di Manzo Brasata Biscottata con Verdure Baby. The beef cheek is first braised, then hand-pulled before being compacted into a block. Then it is portioned out like a brownie and pan-fried to crisp the exterior before being served. Hence, as my fork pierced through the crusty layer, it unveiled the gelatinous meat. What a refreshing way to enjoy beef cheeks!

IMG_0757
Pumpkin Ravioli 4.8/5

Before dessert, we also tried a tasting portion of Ravioli di Zucca, Amaretto e Ricotta Affumicata. The Pumpkin ravioli is made with the chef's mama's recipe that consists of amaretto and smoked ricotta, and it is the most memorable one to date. Unlike most pumpkin kinds of ravioli I had tried, this plate has so many more flavours permeating through and mingling with one another instead of just the singular sweetness of the pumpkin.

IMG_0780
Tiramisu 4/5

Dessert was Tiramisù al Pistacchio di Sicilia. The pistachio mascarpone was nutty and creamy but light and simply mellow sweet.

IMG_0701

GIO also has a strong curation of wines, including La Cantina Di Cunez Nadir, located near the town of Gressan, which offers a local mix of grape varieties and Tenuta Il Palagio, a Tuscan wine estate owned by rock star Sting and his wife, Trudie Styler.

IMG_0728

You may wish to join its House of Artisans of Wine – a wine club membership whereby the terroirs of hidden gem Italian wine-making are harvested and brought to a sharing community right here in Singapore. At an annual membership fee of SGD 500, members will receive a welcome vintage bottle, SGD 300 voucher to buy selected wine, special retail price for their exclusive wine selection, 15% discount on GIO's Artisans of Wine (AoW) list, exclusive wine scouting upon discovering a favourite Italian winery, as well as 30% discount on GIO's wine monthly events. Members also enjoy monthly special offers and monthly pre-order air shipments.

Altro Zafferano @ Ocean Financial Centre - A New Chapter With A New Interior & Menu

AltroZafferano17

In the blink of an eye, Zafferano has opened in Singapore for ten years. To mark its tenth year, the restaurant underwent a renovation, spotting a brighter and more spacious interior. It has also been renamed as Altro Zafferano.

AltroZafferano2
Italian Aperitivo 4/5

I have the 4-course Experience Menu ($148++), which comprises a starter, pasta, a main course and a dessert. In addition, every diner will be welcomed with a complimentary Italian Aperitivo. It is a vibrant amuse bouche of Castelvetrano olive foam, martini gel, diced red capsicum, tarallo cube, Toritto almond, and tuna cream.

AltroZafferano6
Hokkaido Scallop 4/5

For my starter, I picked the Hokkaido Scallop paired with smoked pear, potato mousse and guanciale. A light starter freshened up by the smoked Comice pear for that lift in sweetness.

AltroZafferano13
Wild Red Bream Crudo 4.2/5

My dining partner had the Wild Red Bream Crudo with Tomato, Basil, and Frisella Bread. A beautiful sashimi-grade white fish complemented with vibrant flavours.

AltroZafferano22
House-made Ravioli 4/5

For my pasta dish, I decided to go for House-made Ravioli, which has a unique shape that I have not seen or eaten before. It is stuffed with minced wagyu beef genovese and served with anchovy colatura, grana padano fondue, and beef and onion consomme. It is then finished with anchovy slices to add depth to the flavour.

AltroZafferano24
Tagliolini with Langoustine Carpaccio 4.5/5

While I had the ravioli, my friend went for the house-made Tagliolini with Langoustine Carpaccio marinated with Amalfi lemon Garum and topped with sea grape. It was an excellent choice, and I would highly recommend it too. The pasta was cooked to a delightful bite and tossed in a refreshing zesty sauce.

AltroZafferano29
Roaring Forties Lamb 4.2/5

Moving to our mains, I opted for the Roaring Forties Lamb. It comes in two cuts - lamb rack and lamb neck. The lamb rack is grilled over charcoal while the lamb neck is braised in Aglianico. They are paired with potatoes, sheep ricotta sfogliatella, green peas and finished with lamb jus.

AltroZafferano34
Silver Cod 4/5

While I had the lamb, my friend went for the Silver Cod with Peperone Crusco and Mussels Veloute. The huge piece of Chilean seabass fillet was perfectly cooked. It was chunky yet moist, with cruso pepper puree in between. The silver cod is served in a creamy mussels veloute paired with yellow capsicum cream and mini red pepper stuffed with cod filling.

AltroZafferano40
Amalfi Lemon Sponge Cake 4.2/5

I had the Amalfi Lemon Sponge Cake with Amalfi lemon curd, Amalfi lemon pulp, and white chocolate chantilly for dessert. I love sour, so this is to my liking for its light and tangy finish, served with limoncello granita.

AltroZafferano44
Giffoni Hazelnut 4.5/5

AltroZafferano48
Espresso 4.2/5

Other dessert options include the Giffoni Hazelnut and Espresso. The Giffoni Hazelnut comes in the form of a multi-textured sphere with Valrhona Guanaja 70% chocolate and fresh raspberry to cut through the richness. For the coffee drinker, you will enjoy the Espresso Mousse resting on top of an espresso sponge cake paired with Clementine sorbet to give it a touch of acidity.

AltroZafferano51
Petit Four 3.5/5

Our 4-course dinner ended with a trio of Petit Four for a sweet ending. There is an interesting fact when dining at Altro Zafferano. It is cheaper to order the set menu than the a la carte item. I also checked that they would be serving the same portion, be it a set menu or a la carte.

Diners can feast in style at Racines for its Christmas Joy A La Carte Semi-Buffet, available for dinner on Christmas Eve, 24 December and brunch on Christmas Day, 25 December. SofiteCityCentreXmas2

SofiteCityCentreXmas3

We started our Christmas feast at Racines with some complimentary bread paired with Truffle Butter and Kaya spread.

SofiteCityCentreXmas7
Truffle Chicken Liver Pate 4.2/5

I love pate, and what's more fitting to start the dinner with the Truffle Chicken Liver Pate with Morel Mushrooms and Melba Toast. I enjoyed the chicken liver pate so much that I finished the whole bottle with the rest of the complimentary bread.

SofiteCityCentreXmas11
Baked Oyster Rockefeller 4/5

Next, we have the Baked Oyster Rockefeller with sauteed spinach and tarragon sabayon, whetting up the appetite.

SofiteCityCentreXmas15
Roasted Chestnut Veloute 4.2/5

I enjoyed the Roasted Chestnut Veloute. It is something different from the usual lobster bisque or mushroom soup.  It even comes with a spinach cheese ravioli and bacon creme in it.

SofiteCityCentreXmas17
Carpaccio Hokkaido Scallops 4.5/5

The surprise for the night has to be the Carpaccio Hokkaido Scallops served in a hot kombu broth, with baby vegetables, ikura and bonito. It is my first time having raw scallop done this way. I enjoyed how the kombu broth brightens the sweetness of the scallops.

SofiteCityCentreXmas21
Beef Pithivier 4.5/5

For our mains, we had the Beef Pithivier. The beautiful char-grilled beef tenderloin paired with mushroom paste is wrapped in a flaky puff pastry. It is tender and juicy, dressed in its natural jus to enjoy its lovely natural beefy flavour.

SofiteCityCentreXmas28
Roasted Whole Duck with Chestnut Stuffing 4.8/5

SofiteCityCentreXmas32

A medley of sweet and savoury goodies is available for takeaway to spread warmth and joy at your Christmas celebrations. I understand some people are not a fan of turkey. If you are not a fan, I will highly recommend the Roasted Whole Duck with Chestnut Stuffing. I enjoyed the duck so much that I had a second helping. I'm not sure whether it is the roasting technique; the duck has an enjoyable succulence unlike any I have eaten so far. It is available for takeaway. To order, visit our e-shop at https://sofitelsingaporecitycentre.oddle.me/en_SG

SofiteCityCentreXmas38

Wrapping up our dinner at Racines, we have a selection of desserts to ring in the festive seasons on a sweet note.
