Cartoon Network Cafe by The Soup Spoon @ Punggol Waterway Point - Character Theme Pop-Up Café Featuring Powerpuff Girls, We Bare Bears, Ben 10 And Adventure Time Land

CNCAFE_1

Following a collaboration between The Soup Spoon Union and Cartoon Network Asia-Pacific, a cartoon-themed cafe, Cartoon Network Cafe by The Soup Spoon Union opened its doors just last month at the Waterway Point Mall in Punggol. A setup thoughtfully decorated with statues, cutouts and toys of loved characters such as the Powerpuff Girls, We Bare Bears, Ben 10 and Adventure Time Land, it renders every spot in this fun-filled 93-seater café an IG-worthy haven that will have all the kids (and even adults) screaming internally in delight. Its appeal is further amplified with a wide variety of dish offerings inspired by the animated shows and its characters that will instantly transport you back to the good ol' days. We stepped in and dove right into their extensive menu featuring a slew of pretty themed dishes ranging from appetisers, mains, desserts, drinks and milkshakes. Big on visuals but how do they fare in taste?

CNCAFE_8
Finn & Jake’s Chicken with Red Velvet Waffles 3.5/5

The Finn & Jake’s Chicken with Red Velvet Waffles ($15.90) features crispy pops of chicken karaage with red velvet waffles. A different take on the classic chicken waffles dish, the red velvet waffles is a sweeter rendition with a cakey brownie-like texture and a strong hint of cocoa flavour. The waffles may be a tad too dry but it is made better with a liberal drizzle of the accompanying honey served alongside, as well as the crispy and juicy chicken karrage pieces that were well-executed. A sweet and savoury marriage of flavours which surprisingly worked out for me.

CNCAFE_12
Pan-Pan Calzone 3.5/5

The Pan-Pan Calzone ($10.90) is essentially a folded in version of pizza in a huge pie-like shape. Biting into the crisp crusted exterior reveals savoury insides, with tomato sauce, cheese and meats. Decently executed, this dish is a hit among the kids.

CNCAFE_9
We Bare Bears Angus Ribeye Steak 3/5

The We Bare Bears Angus Ribeye Steak ($23.80) comes with a beef ribeye steak and a side of fries and salad. Done medium rare, the steak is grilled to a slightly tougher texture and a tad dry lacking the succulence and seasonings for that burst of flavours.

CNCAFE_10
Grizzly Beef Burger 3/5

The Grizzly Beef Burger ($18.80) features generous ingredients including the beef patty, onion rings, sunny side up egg, mushrooms and cheese centred between soft brioche toasted buns that has We Bare Bear’s big brother Grizz’s face with two small sausages that made up its ears. The beef patty boasts a softer texture though the overall quality was below satisfactory due to the tasteless meat which lacked seasonings. The only flavours that came through were perhaps the cheese and thin pieces of onion rings sandwiched in between.

CNCAFE_5
Blossom Strawberry Soda 3.8/5

For the drinks, we had the Blossom Strawberry Soda ($10.90) which comes in a flask of strawberry flavoured soda and a fluffy cloud of cotton candy perched on top of a beaker of strawberry and lemon slices. Pouring the strawberry drink in melts the cotton candy in the process, which adds a sufficient sweetness to the strawberry soda, giving it a non-cloying and refreshing taste to the drink with a slight tangy tinge of lemon.

CNCAFE_13
Bubbles Cheesecake 3.8/5

From the desserts menu, we had the Bubbles Cheesecake ($14.90) which features a gorgeously plated dish of creamy cheesecake slice, sweet berries, whipped cream, biscuit crumbles and cotton candy on the side. The cheesecake boasts a soft texture with a rich cheese flavour to it, while the crumbles added a crunch to the soft cheesecake, as well as a mild saltiness to the sweetness of the cheesecake for a more balanced flavour of the dessert.

CNCAFE_3

The Cartoon Network Café has done well with the decorations of the place and design of its themed dishes, yet there are still much room for improvement in terms of the food quality. Although it does curate a fun-filled and memorable dining experience for the kids, the prices may be a bit too steep as like the other character cafes in Singapore, which might make visits a one-time experience for most. However, as the characters featured will be rotated every 3 to 6 months, we wait in anticipation as it brings back opportunities to excite taste buds and have crowds of people showing up for another unique dining experience at CN Café again.

L’eclair by Sarah Michelle @ Singapore Shopping Centre - Introduces High Tea Degustation Set

20171104_141849_HDR

An affinity with eclairs spurred Sarah and Michelle to open L’eclair, with a vision to bring eclairs to and beyond its realm of plain pastry cream. Located at Singapore Shopping Centre, L’eclair by Sarah Michelle then became Singapore’s first eclair specialty store and cafe. One year into its opening, High Tea Degustation Set is now available, showcasing not just their signature e'clairs but also tantalising savouries that are all crafted with their own hands.

20171104_143004_HDR

This degustation set will be strictly for reservations only with limited slots per day. What distinguishes it from other high tea set is that the sweets comes in the form of mini eclairs in various flavours, hence you get to try 5 different flavours in one go! For the savoury, you get an assortment of homemade canapes. Each high tea set comes with two complimentary drinks.

20171104_143612_HDR
Truffle Egg Mayo Choux Puff, Tomato & Basil Bruschetta. Foie Gras Pate & Tomato Relish Crostini 3.8/5

We started off with the cold canapes sitting on the top tier - Truffle Egg Mayo Choux Puff, Foie Gras Pate & Tomato Relish Crostini and Tomato & Basil Bruschetta. My personal favourite would be the crostini. The piquant homemade tomato relish has deep, sweet notes edged with a bit of tang which balances the creamy pate that carries a slight gaminess. The textural contrast of the creamy topping and the crunchy crostini is excellent. The choux puff delivers a satisfying creamy mouthfill with its egg mayo and spongy choux puff, while the bruschetta brightens up my palate with simple, fresh ingredients.

20171104_143938_HDR
Smoked Salmon & Dill Mousse Tartlet 3.8/5, Roasted Mushrooms Vol au Vent 3.8/5

Moving on to the warm canapes, the Smoked Salmon & Dill Mousse Tartlet is light on the taste buds but is packed with the wonderful flavour of smoked salmon. The Roasted Mushrooms Vol au Vent fares just as well. It is thin with flaky crust that is just right for the strong earthy mushrooms.

20171104_144221_HDR
Signature Chicken & Bacon Pie 3.5/5

Trained at Le Cordon Bleu Paris, the pies here are notable too. Along with the warm canapes, you got to try their signature Signature Chicken & Bacon Pie. Baked to a gorgeous brown, the crust was flaky, leaving a warm, buttery aroma on my fingertips. The filling is not too heavily peppered and is on the sweeter side but there are bacon within to lend a savoury note. If this mini version has proven its worth, you could get it at its original size.

20171104_151723_HDR

Done with their savouries, the pretty eclairs beckons. You will be treated with 2 seasonal editions - Lime Basil & Coconut and Lemon Meringue, and 3 classic flavours - Salted Caramel, Ispahan and Dark Chocolate.

20171104_150503_HDR
Lime Basil & Coconut 2.5/5, Lemon Meringue 3/5

While I have tasted really good desserts that have a herbaceous profile such as Shiso leaf sherbet, the addition of basil to the Lime Basil and Coconut doesn't quite work here for me. The Lemon Meringue fares much better in importing the flavours of a classic Lemon Tart.

20171104_151341_HDR
Salted Caramel 3/5, Isphan 3.8/5, Dark Chocolate 3/5

Out of the 3 classics, my favourite would be the Ispha, perfumed with rose and sweetened with lychees with tartness lent from raspberry. The filling seems less dense compared to the rest. Salted Caramel and Dark Chocolate cater to you if you are craving for warm and rich flavours. Overall, the sweetness level of their eclairs is acceptable but a lighter and fluffier filling is much preferred. The pastry is airy and would have been more so should the pastry carries that delicate crisp which I was anticipating as I suck my teeth into it.

20171104_143047_HDR
Mushroom Soup 3.5/5

Somehow, I favour the savoury items here a lot more. Even their Mushroom Soup ($8.50), one of their latest savoury items, hits the notes.  Rich with mushrooms bits that are bond together with cream, the partnering toast comes in the form of bite-size crunches that allows you to just tuck into the wholesome goodness with a spoon.

20171104_160408_HDR

Tuck away from the hustling streets of Orchard Road, High Tea at L’éclair by Sarah Michelle is a welcoming respite. High tea degustation set is available from Tuesdays to Sundays, 11am to 5pm (with 3 fixed seatings a day).

SPRMRKT Daily and SPRMRKT Kitchen & Bar @ Robertson Quay - Dine, Retail and Art Concept Under One Roof

20170507_115250_HDR

Whether or not you are into arts, museums and galleries, dining in places with strong arts affiliations tend to pepper the overall experience. If that's the case for you, you may enjoy SPRMRKT Daily and Kitchen & Bar at STPI-Workshop & Gallery, Robertson Quay. Situated right beside the river, the 2 storey building can't be more apt to house SPRMRKT's second establishment where it combines dining, retail and art space into one, all set to inspire the soul and mind of yours.

20170507_122059_HDR
Blackened Fish & Chips 3/5

At SPRMRKT Daily, we tried 2 of its menu's mainstays brought from its first establishment at McCallum Street. Blackened Fish & Chips ($20) with batter blackened by squid ink. Although I couldn't really taste the squid ink, I enjoyed its light and airy texture while the fish was kept moist. The sweet potato fries was moreish and its in-house slaw was even more so!

20170507_122444_HDR
Carbonara 3/5

The Carbonara ($20) was hearty with lots of bacon toasted for extra texture. Break that soft poached egg and you will get a velvety finish to the creamy sauce. We had the pasta sat for a while and the sauce flavoured with aged pamarsan seemed to have seeped deeper into the pasta, which was even better as it seemed to be a little too watery when it was served.

20170507_114241_HDR

While waiting for your food, spend some time at the retail section that has curated brands of similar values and virtues. You will find independent labels here with deep traditional and/or artisanal roots such as Cerana Honey (a producer of sustainable honey), Bruneus (the first retailer of activated nuts in Singapore), The Hunter’s Kitchenette (a maker of nut butter inspired by the hunter-gatherer lifestyle). What stood out for me while browsing is Chocolate Concierge, the first artisanal chocolate-maker focused on bringing the cocoa trade to Malaysia. Not because that their chocolate bars are exclusive to SPRMRKT, each bar of chocolate simply looks like a gift hand wrapped with a designer wrapper. Not just food, SPRMRKT also collaborates with Mmerciencore for their exclusive Mint Cream cleanser, and Kamilinen, who hand-stitched their staff's aprons! Even BooksActually found its way onto the shelf.

20170507_132846_HDR
Croque-Madame 3.5/5

On the second level of the space is SPRMRKT Kitchen & Bar which offers a European bistro style menu. Our brunch started with the Croque-Madame ($20). Indeed, it was a french portion but its taste did surpass my expectation. Crispy Farmer's white with creamy and flavourful béchamel in between to harmonise the cheese and the meaty ham. The fried egg in panko breadcrumb crust was a delight too.

20170507_134252_HDR
Chicken Pot Pie 2.8/5

Unveiling what's underneath the puffy dome is always exciting of the Chicken Pot Pie ($18). In it we got a creamy mixture of chicken, potatoes and carrots. The base wasn't too creamy and dipping the pastry into it is like dipping a fluffy prata into curry. It was good but a thicker and richer base may enhances the experience a lot more. I also don't quite get that joy and happiness of eating a pot pie. Well it may be a personal thing.

20170507_131818_HDR
Smoked Chicken Ravioli 2.5/5

Smoked Chicken Ravioli ($22) Ravioli, like risotto is a challenging dish to handle. The skin, the filling and the proportion of both need to be rather precise. Perhaps, this dish needs more time.

20170507_135744_HDR
Weekend Roast 3.8/5

Saving the best for the last, our Weekend Roast ($34) was made up of 180g Pork Belly, homemade ricotta, Yorkshire pudding, mushrooms and vine-ripped tomatoes. No seasoning required when the meat itself was flavoured by its own melty fats lined with crispy skin. I love the homemade ricotta which lighten the meat like how yogurt does to meat. The accompanying mushrooms and tomatoes were leads in their own right.

20170507_141848_HDR
Bread & Butter Pudding 3.8/5

To round up our Sunday Brunch, I would say SPRMRKT's Bread & Butter Pudding ($10) did it. The taste of the sweet, buttery and flaky viennoiserie followed by the warm custard, juxtaposed against a fine classic vanilla ice cream, spells nothing but bliss for that moment. Yes, more ice cream please!

Like a petite four after dessert, bring home a piece of inspiration by spending some time at Here/Now @ SPRMRKT Daily which showcases one artwork at a time, allowing you be fully present with the artwork in front of you. Here at SPRMRKT Daily and Kitchen & Bar, showcasing fresh produce, local and regional artisanal products and artwork, you may find yourself spending half a day away browsing, eating, drink and admiring the art pieces. You may just be inspired and get some fresh produce home to whip up a few good dishes of your own!

Joo Bar and Restaurant @ Tan Quee Lan Street (Bugis)

IMG_8673ed

Joo is a new makegeolli bar and restaurant setting a whole new trend in Singapore food and beverage scene with inspiring modern Korean fare and tipples. Joo which means alcohol in Korean, is located in a three storey heritage shophouses along Tan Quee Lan Street, spotting a sleek, casual and inviting venue.

IMG_8686ed
Hong Dae Tripping 4/5

Makegeolli cocktail could be the next trendsetting drinks using the oldest alcoholic beverage native to Korea. I had the Hong Dae Tripping ($24) which is made from Joo's house brew organic makegeolli (also known as Joo Brew). The cocktail is a mixture of Joo Brew, Grey Goose, Apricot Brandy, Cherry Blossom, Lemon and Rosemary. A light, refreshing and zesty drink.

IMG_8682ed

A trio of Korean banchan welcomes diners as being our diner experience at Joo.

IMG_8689ed
Tofu Chips with Guacamole & Kimchi Salsa 4.2/5

Kick starting the evening we started with the Anju which is similar to bar food that goes well with alcohol. First is the Tofu Chips with Guacamole & Kimchi Salsa ($14). The house made tofu chips is so what like the nachos. I preferred the kimchi salsa but both is as well. It's really addictive and I could not stop going back for more.

IMG_8690ed
Baby Eel Paper 3/5

The Deep Fried Baby Eel Paper ($14) imported from Korean is an interesting snack bite but I don't quite know how to appreciate it.

IMG_8695ed
Warm Kimchi with Tofu & Spam 4.5/5

Many bars have introduced spam fries as a trend for bar snack however I find it too salty to have it on its own. The Warm Kimchi with Tofu & Spam ($16) was an excellent idea to pair house made kimichi, mangalitsa pork belly, tofu, onion and scallion with the luncheon meat. It may sounds complex but the flavours actually work harmoniously.

IMG_8700ed
Makgeolli Sampler 4/5

Being a makegeolli specialized bar and restaurant, I am sure it can be a bit overwhelming with the different selections not knowing where to start with. Worry not as Joo offers a Makgeolli Sampler ($35 for 5). Among the samplers, my favourite is the Yuzu infused makegeolli which is sweet and easy to drink.

IMG_8702ed
Kimchi Chicken Pot Pie 4/5

A nice twist is the Kimchi Chicken Pot Pie ($14) covered by a golden flaky pastry dome. Inside it is a rosy kimchi bechamel gravy studded with chicken tenderloin, celery, carrot, mushrooms, onion and corn. The additional of kimchi gave it good lift in flavour from the somewhat boring traditional taste.

IMG_8704ed
Joo Bossam 4.5/5

Joo uses Mangalitsa for it's pork dishes which is a domestic breed developed in the 19th century by cross breeding the traditional Hungarian Bakonyi an Szalontal breeds with imported Sumadia pigs from Serbia. I thought the Joo Bossam ($28) showcases the sweetness the flavour of the mangalitsa pork belly excellent. Take a piece of the boiled mangalitsa pork belly, white yucha kimchi and a bit of the spicy radish salad and eat it all together.

IMG_8712ed
Slow Roasted Mangalitsa Pork Belly  4.2/5

Another version showcasing the mangalitsa pork is the Slow Roasted Mangalitsa Pork Belly ($32). The thick cut mangalitsa pork belly is eaten together with spring onion salad and Dijon mustard. Have a bit of everything together to get a nice concoction of flavours in the mouth.

IMG_8713ed
Hand Chopped Korean Minced Rib Steak 4.2/5

Beautifully marinated, the Hand Chopped Korean Minced Rib Steak ($20) literally melted in the mouth. Topped with garlic flakes, chopped nuts and spring onions to give it another layer of texture and flavour, lifting the whole enjoyment.

IMG_8719ed
Sojurita 4.2/5

Perfect for chilling out with friends is the Sojurita ($28) which a good for 2 to 4 pax. The easy to drink alcohol, making up of soju and beer will be tough to just stop at one.

IMG_8722ed
Seafood Gochujang Risotto 4.5/5

Last but not least, if you need something substantial then a must try is the Seaffod Gochujang Risotto ($24). The red pepper paste cream sauce risotto comes with an Asian influenced flavour served with shrimp, black mussel, clam and squid. Korean can cook their risotto too!

I left Joo Bar and Restaurant having a better appreciation of makegeolli, especially their preservative free makegeolli with organic rice and purified water which is brew in Singapore locally. The modern take of Korean fare also impressed me a lot. It modernizes the way we appreciate classic Korean cuisine while retaining the traditional flavours.

Spruce @ Fire Station (Upper Bukit Timah)

IMG_6980ed

This is the time of the year where restaurants are pushing out their festive menus. After my recent visit to Spruce at Phoenix Park, I am back to Spruce but at their Upper Bukit Timah Fire station outlet to try their Festive Set Menu ($38++) available from 1 to 30 December 2014 except 24, 25 and 31 December 2014. OCBC cardmembers will enjoy a 10% discount for the Festive 3 course menu which comes with a Salad, choice of main and a dessert.

IMG_6970ed
Roasted Beetroot & Chevre Salad 4/5

Starting the 3 course Festive Menu was the Roasted Beetroot & Chevre Salad. It consists of a bed of roasted beetroot, candied walnuts, arugula and white balsamic dressing. I like the roasted beetroot which still comes with a nice crunch on top of its earthy sweetness.

IMG_6972ed
Split Pea and Sweet Potato Soup 3.5/5

For an additional $10, you can add the Split Pea and Sweet Potato Soup to make it a 4 course meal. It was a comforting and hearty soup especially for the rainy period. If you are in the mood for some champagne, spruce offers the Pierre Paillard Cru Brut Chapagne for an additional of $45 for 375ml or $85 for 750ml.

IMG_6982ed
Smoked Lamb Bockwurst with Chestnut Stuffing 3/5

IMG_6984ed
Roasted Turkey with Chestnut Stuffing 3.5/5

The mains come with a choice of either the Smoked Lamb Bockwurst with Chestnut Stuffing or Roasted Turkey with Chestnut Stuffing. I really like the plating, the dish has the Christmas feel in its presentation. Among the two mains, I would prefer the turkey. I enjoyed how the sweetness of the cranberry sauce complemented the turkey meat.

IMG_6989ed
Pumpkin Pie 2.8/5

Drawing the curtain to the 3 course festive set menu is the Pumpkin Pie. While I enjoyed the buttery crust, I thought the pumpkin flavour was lacking. I could barely tasted any pumpkin. It probably has been masked off by the sweetness of the marshmallow.

IMG_6974ed
Ahi Tuna Tartar 4.5/5

Besides the festive menu, Spruce at Fire Station offers a lot of yummlicious dishes on the a la carte menu. One such dish is the Ahi Tuna Tartar ($22) that my friend highly recommended. 120 grams of sashimi grade raw tuna mixed with a special vinaigrette and served with a sliced avocado and toasted ciabatta bread. One word, awesome. You just need to have it.

IMG_6976ed
Signature Salad 4.2/5

For a healthy and clean diet, Spruce's Signature Salad ($19) is pretty substantial with fresh corn, dates, almonds, Momotaro tomato, cucumber, avocado mixed green and chevre cheese. I like the choice of the champagne vinaigrette dressing which is not too heavy complementing the nature flavours of the salad. I actually find the use of dates in the salad rather interesting as you don't often get it elsewhere.

IMG_6978ed
Spruce Burger 4/5

Over at Spruce @ Phoenix Park, I tried their pasta dishes so this time round I had the burgers instead. First up is the Spruce Burger ($18) which comes with a 160 grams freshly grounded Australian beef chunk sandwiched in between the black and white sesame bun that is made freshly daily. The burger is also topped with havarti cheese, bacons, lettuces etc. The beef patty itself was juicy and moist. However I felt something was missing in the burger, probably that feeling of guilt and messiness when you bite into one. I like my burger to be very big in flavour but this was more refined.

IMG_6983ed
Tuna Burger 3/5

The Tuna Burger ($24) is one item on the menu that caught my eye when I first visited Spruce. I tried the cod fish burger from market grill before and it was awesome. I was hoping the tuna burger will be something similar. Unfortunately, I felt a bit disappointed when it was served as a patty instead of a whole tuna fillet. I was a decent burger but it was not memorable.  The star ingredient, tuna was hardly noticeable in the execution.

IMG_6987ed
Red Velvet Cupcake and Latte 4/5

Don't be mislead by all the different colourful neon lights at Spruce Fire Station. This is not just a drinking place, it actually serves a cup of good coffee. The beans are sourced from Naples in Italy. We also tried the Red Velvet Cupcake which gets the approval from around the table. It was nicely balanced, not overly sweet and moist.

IMG_6991ed
Pecan Pie 3/5

IMG_6988ed
Baked Ginger Date Pudding 4/5

I have tried the Baked Ginger Date Pudding ($15) before and I still enjoy it. Warm, moist and comes with hints of ginger flavour. This is heavenly paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. If you like something nutty and sweet, the Pecan Pie would be a good choice too.

Having visit both Spruce's outlet, I have to say I have enjoyed both my experience. For those that drives, parking is free. Spruce Fire Station also screens live soccer matches, hence it is a good place to hang out with friends for a drink and catch a match too. Of course not to be missed is the festive promotional menu at $38++ and OCBC cardmembers get another 10% discount.
