Club Rangoon @ Duxton Road - A Taste of Contemporary Burmese Cuisine in Singapore

ClubRangoonExterior-1

ClubRangoonExterior-3

After making its mark in Hong Kong, Club Rangoon by Burmese restaurateur, Nelson Htoo has found a new home in Singapore. Nelson's decision to relocate was driven by the lease ending in Hong Kong and his deep-rooted connection to Singapore, where he spent his teenage years. Additionally, Singapore's vibrant Southeast Asian community, including a significant Burmese diaspora, makes it an ideal place to showcase Burmese cuisine's rich and spiced flavours.

ClubRangoon2
Laphet Thoke 4/5

We started our lunch with the Laphet Thoke ($17), a refreshing fermented tea leaf salad. This dish is a staple in Burmese cuisine and consists of shredded cabbage, cherry tomatoes, and green chilli, all tossed in a tangy sauce. The real star, however, is the double-fried beans that add an irresistible crunch to each bite. The tea leaves themselves, which are traditionally fermented, add a unique flavour that elevates the dish. While most of us are more accustomed to drinking tea, in Burma, it's just as common to eat it, making this dish a fascinating introduction to the cuisine.

ClubRangoon8
Shan Htamin Jin 3.8/5

Next, we sampled the Shan Htamin Jin ($12.5/2pc), which translates to Shan-style rice. This light bite featured mildly turmeric-flavoured fermented rice balls crowned with a tomato chilli rice pillow. I was advised that it's best enjoyed in a single bite, allowing the slightly sticky yet firm rice to mingle with the savoury, tangy, and earthy notes. It's a textural delight that offers a harmonious blend of flavours, making it one of the standout items on the menu.

ClubRangoon11
Dirty Egg Bites 4.2/5

Another popular item on the menu is the Dirty Egg Bites ($12/2pc). This dish features hard-boiled eggs topped with a curry and coriander sauce, accompanied by caramelized onions and a split pea chip. It’s a dish that offers a glimpse into the rich and complex flavors of Burmese cuisine. The combination of the egg with the curry sauce and crunchy chip makes for a satisfying bite that leaves you wanting more.

ClubRangoon15
Fish & Chips 4.2/5

When you see Fish & Chips ($14) on the menu, you might expect the British classic. However, Club Rangoon's take on this dish is a delightful surprise. Instead of the usual battered fish, barramundi is pounded with a mixture of spices reminiscent of otah, a local fish cake. The dish is served with fish crackers, allowing you to scoop the spiced barramundi onto the crackers like nachos. It's a creative and flavorful twist on a familiar dish that showcases the chef's ingenuity.

ClubRangoon23
Mohinga 4/5

No exploration of Burmese cuisine would be complete without Mohinga. This staple noodle dish is a complex and comforting bowl of goodness, featuring rice noodles in a lemongrass-catfish soup, banana stems, egg, grilled catfish, split pea fritter, chilli powder, and lime. The broth is light yet flavorful, with silky soft noodles that make it a joy to eat. The banana stems add an interesting crunch, although the fibrous texture might not be to everyone's liking. Overall, Mohinga is a must-try for anyone new to Burmese cuisine, offering a well-balanced and satisfying experience.

ClubRangoon25
Duck Leg Confit Curry 4.5/5

The highlight of the meal for me was the Duck Leg Confit Curry ($32). The duck leg was cooked to perfection, fork-tender and rich in flavour. The curry itself was aromatic and deeply flavorful, enriched by the sweetness of onions and a medley of spices. This is the kind of dish that demands a bowl of steamed jasmine rice ($5) to soak up every last drop of the delicious curry. It's hearty, comforting, and absolutely delicious — a true showcase of the depth and complexity of Burmese cuisine.

Club Rangoon brings a slice of contemporary Burmese cuisine to Singapore, offering a diverse, familiar, and novel menu. Whether you're new to Burmese food or a seasoned fan, the dishes here are sure to leave a lasting impression. From the refreshing Laphet Thoke to the hearty Duck Leg Confit Curry, there's something for everyone to enjoy. Club Rangoon is a welcome addition to Singapore's vibrant food scene, and I can't wait to return for another round of culinary exploration.

Spruce Petite @ East Coast Road - Up Its Game with A New Revamped Menu

Restaurant

We visited Spruce Petite in May when it was just a couple of months old. Recently, they have revamped their menu based on diner feedback, showcasing their dedication to continuous improvement — a quality we greatly appreciate in a sincere F&B establishment. Additionally, they now offer an impressive array of cocktails.

Mala King Mushroom Skewers 1
Mala King Mushroom Skewers 4.5/5

We began our meal with their featured bar bites, each priced at just $12. The Mala King Mushroom Skewers were perfectly grilled and dusted in a fragrant mala spice mix that delivered a numbing, spicy kick. We loved how the mushrooms retained their juiciness, leaving us eager for more.

Korean Style Chicken Wingettes 1
Korean Style Chicken Wingettes 4/5

The next bar bite we tried was the Korean Style Chicken Wingettes, which left a lasting impression. Despite being coated in a spicy sauce, the wingettes remained crispy. The sauce struck a perfect balance between sweet and spicy, enhancing the overall flavour.

Yakitori Skewers 1
Yakitori Skewers 3/5

The last bar bite we sampled was the Yakitori Skewers, featuring tender chunks of chicken that were nicely charred. However, we found the marinade a bit on the sweet side for our taste. Despite this, the skewers were still enjoyable and great with a drink or two.

Chili Soft Shell Crab 1
Chili Soft Shell Crab 3.8/5

They also offer two specials on the bar bites menu. We tried the Chilli Soft Shell Crab ($24), featuring crispy fried soft-shell crab in a sweet chilli sauce reminiscent of Singapore's national chilli crab. A unique twist to this dish is the inclusion of an onsen egg, rather than having the egg cooked into the sauce as in traditional chilli crab. We craved for some bread or mantou to mop up the delightful dish. Another special item on the menu is the Fresh Oysters ($20 for 6pcs), available exclusively on Saturdays and Sundays.

Ribeye Steak 1
Ribeye Steak 4/5

For mains, we started with the Ribeye Steak ($28) served with black pepper sauce, which truly satisfied our steak cravings. We requested it medium rare, and it was served just as we liked it - nicely grilled to perfection. The steak was impeccably seasoned and incredibly tender, offering a melt-in-your-mouth experience. Accompanying the steak were flavourful potato pieces and a side of juicy tomatoes, which complemented the dish wonderfully.

Classic Fish & Chips 1
Classic Fish & Chips 4/5

Next, we tried the Classic Fish & Chips ($18), a classic that did not disappoint. The fish was beautifully battered and fried to a golden crisp, while the inside remained tender and flaky. Paired with perfectly cooked, crispy fries and a tangy tartar sauce, it was a delightful dish to share or have on your own.

Classic Beef Burger 1
Classic Beef Burger 4/5

Lastly, the Classic Beef Burger ($14) was served with golden crispy fries. A juicy grilled beef patty nestled between soft, toasted buns was complemented by crisp lettuce, tomato, and a thick slice of cheddar cheese. This classic never goes wrong and is perfect any time of day.

Cocktails 1
Fire Dragon 3.8/5 (top left), Harley Quinn 3.5/5 (top right), Malaysian Assam Laksa 4/5 (bottom)

Adding to the revamped menu is a cocktail menu featuring a curated selection of speciality cocktails priced at $18 each or 3 for $45. Among them is the distinctive Malaysian Assam Laksa, boasting a fragrant blend of spices with a gentle kick of heat, offering a truly unique flavour experience unlike anything else we've tasted. For a refreshing option, the Fire Dragon delights with its fresh dragon fruit juice base. Lastly, the visually stunning Harley Quinn, inspired by the Suicide Squad, is captivated by its beauty but leans towards a sweeter profile.

Godfather
Godfather 3.8/5

We also savoured the Godfather, a pleasantly delightful concoction featuring whiskey with a pronounced sweet almond flavour profile. Lastly, the X-rated Margarita, crafted with Jose Cuervo Tequila, perfectly complements its salted glass rim, offering a sophisticated and balanced taste experience.

You can also make your own cocktail for $28 and choose your flavour and type of alcohol. Just let the mixologist know and be surprised!

Weekend Specials: Enjoy 2 hours of free-flow Oysters, Wine and Prosecco at $40++ per pax from 12pm.

Starting from 30th June, Spruce Petite is launching a brunch menu every Saturday and Sunday from 10am-2pm featuring Pancake with Blueberry Jam ($8), Crispy Bread with Sous Vide Egg ($8), Avocado Toasties ($12), Ham & Cheese Toasties ($12) and English Breakfast Set ($18)

Angie's Oyster Bar & Grill @ Havelock - Refreshed Dining Space and a New Chef’s Seasonal Menu

IMG_3815

Located in the Tan Boon Liat Building, Angie's Oyster Bar & Grill has been dedicated to offering quality seafood and meats since 2021. This time, the restaurant unveiled a new Chef's Seasonal Menu for dinner, featuring new creations and enhancements to beloved signature dishes.

IMG_3782

Starting from 10 July, diners can enjoy this attractively priced dinner set, with options of a 4-course meal at $78 per person or a 6-course meal at $98 per person. Elevating the dinner with a specially curated wine pairing is also available: $58 per person for three 90ml pours or $78 per person for four 90ml pours, matching the respective courses.

IMG_3787

Angie's has also been continually upgrading its interior. Recent revamps include a new copper wall showcasing their wine collection and a refurbished live oyster tank. The complete makeover is expected to be ready by July 2024, promising an even more inviting ambience for diners.

IMG_3796
Kombucha

I am a huge fan of Kombucha ($9) and was elated to hear that Angie's serves homemade ones in three refreshing flavours: original, yuzu, and passionfruit. Handcrafted in-house, these kombuchas are all natural without any added preservatives or additives.

IMG_3803
Chef’s Special Selection of Oysters 4.5/5

A visit to Angie's would only be complete with trying their oysters. The Chef's Special Selection of Oysters featured a trio, each uniquely dressed. On the day of our visit, we had oysters from Japan.

IMG_3804
Chef’s Special Selection of Oysters 4.5/5

Typically, I enjoy my oysters bare, but Angie's demonstrated how suitable dressings can enhance the natural flavours of the shellfish. From right to left, we started with a refreshing piece adorned with plum-infused horseradish and shiso, followed by a zesty and sweet number with passionfruit ponzu, and concluded with a delightful pairing of Tsuyataro cucumber and cold-pressed olive oil.

IMG_3833
Homemade Ricotta & Cranberry Apricot Jam Toast 4.2/5

The open-faced Homemade Ricotta & Cranberry Apricot Jam Toast was a real treat. Crafted and fermented in-house, the fresh ricotta shone through with its mild creaminess, beautifully contrasted by crunchy Granny Apple strips and tangy-sweet apricot jam.

IMG_3820
Blue Tasting of the Sea 4.2/5

Our amuse-bouche, aptly named Blue Tasting of the Sea, featured three delightful bites - bluefin tuna topped with negi on crispy rice, Galician blue prawn tartar studded with flying fish roe atop toasted sourdough and finally, my favourite of the three, a blue swimmer crab slaw served on a homemade crispy spiced papadum.

IMG_3841
Charred Romaine Wedge 4.2/5

Angie's rendition of the classic Caesar Salad is one to look out for. Their Charred Romaine Wedge is adorned with specially sourced chilli pepper-cured Atlantic sardines, parmesan polenta chips, homemade anchovy vinaigrette, and hickory-smoked bacon. The result is a balanced mix of smokiness, cheesiness, and crunch.

IMG_3853
Angie’s Original Fish & Chips 4.2/5

For my main course, I chose Angie's Original Fish & Chips, while my dining companions chose the Hawke's Bay Wagyu Ribeye and Cold-water Lobster Linguine.

Angie's Fish & Chips, a favourite among diners, offered a surprise in this set menu: instead of just one type of fish, it featured two — NZ Wild-caught Halibut and Line-caught Barramundi, both coated in their signature stout batter for an impressive crunch. Accompaniments included fries, crushed peas, and a jalapeno tartar sauce.

IMG_3861
Strawberry Meringue with Toasted Coconut Gelato 4/5

We concluded our set dinner with a festive dessert, the Strawberry Meringue with Toasted Coconut Gelato. Thoughtfully created to commemorate Singapore's upcoming 59th birthday in August, it is adorned in celebratory hues of red and white. A scoop of coconut gelato accompanies homemade elements of strawberry crumble, strawberry-swirled meringue chips, sliced strawberries and lychee pearls.

IMG_3863
Ube Cornbread 4.2/5

The unique Ube Cornbread ($18) was highly recommended and lovely! A warm base of sweet cornbread is topped with a smooth ube (purple yam) Mont Blanc, paired harmoniously with coconut gelato, mild cheddar custard and toasted coconut sprinkles.

Reservations are highly recommended via email at hello@angies.com.sg or call +65 6221 9555.

Le Matin Patisserie @ ION Orchard - Expanded Menu of French Fare with Crab Waffles, Brown Butter Artichoke Wedges, Soufflé Au Chocolat and More

IMG_7256

Le Matin Patisserie first unveiled its new permanent space in ION Orchard earlier in February this year and has now launched an expanded menu of French fare that is available every Wednesday to Sunday, for brunch from 11am to 2.30pm and dinner from 6pm to 9pm.

IMG_7250

The exciting new selections continue to tap on Chef-Owner Mohamed Al-Matin's vast expertise in fine pastries and French techniques, putting together options from entrées, mains, sides to desserts.

IMG_7253
Salade 4/5

For a light start, consider the Salade ($12). This dish features a combination of fresh baby spinach and arugula, along with roasted and fresh beets, mixed citrus, and pine nuts.

IMG_7252
Brown Butter Artichoke Wedges 4.2/5

Despite its unassuming appearance, the Brown Butter Artichoke Wedges ($16) proved to be addictive. Crafted with nutty confit Jerusalem artichoke, it comes with a refreshing dip of lemon thyme aioli.

IMG_7254
Bread & Butter 4.2/5

I absolutely adored the Bread & Butter ($9) dish, especially the earthy and rich fermented porcini butter served alongside two soft cubes of whole-wheat milk buns.

IMG_7255
Crab Waffles 4.5/5

Seafood enthusiasts should not miss the Crab Waffles ($20.90). The heart-shaped crunchy waffles are made with seafood butter and dusted with nori for an added layer of fragrance. Spread on the chilled crab tartare and smoked taramasalata dip for a luxurious bite that is rich in umami, creaminess, and herbaceous notes all at once.

IMG_7257
Fish & Chips 4.5/5

The Fish & Chips ($35.90) also left a lasting impression. Enjoy the entire battered Haddock fillet, which was not only fresh and substantial but also accompanied by an edamame mash, yuzu tartare, and thinly crusted fried potatoes. The edamame mash was a novel twist done well.

IMG_7259
Lemon Thyme Madeleines 4.2/5

These delightful Lemon Thyme Madeleines ($12.90) are baked to order, offering a fresh and petite-sized treat that pairs perfectly with your tea or coffee. Infused with the bright flavours of lemon and thyme, they make for a delightful sharing side, especially when dipped in the herby fir syrup cream.

IMG_7260

The texture may become denser as it cools. Hence, I recommend enjoying it warm for the best experience!

IMG_7261
Soufflé Au Chocolat 4.5/5

The 20-minute bake time for the Soufflé Au Chocolat ($18.90) was well worth the wait. Featuring a fluffy, soft dark chocolate soufflé, hazelnut praline, and reduced milk ice cream, it promises an indulgent treat.

IMG_7272
Mangosteen & Lychee Granita 4.5/5

For a more refreshing option, the delicately crafted Mangosteen & Lychee Granita ($14.90) is the one to go for. It features a unique and harmonious combination of mangosteen sorbet, lychee granita and lemongrass bubbles.
