Toby's The Dessert Asylum @ TradeHub 21 (Jurong East)

20160130_165348_HDR

Mud Pies, the in-dessert to have back in a decade ago, before it was being overruled by waffles. A luscious pie who has gone under the radar for the past few years,Toby's The Dessert Asylumis here to revive it. Being at Marine Parade for the past 6 years, they have shifted to TradeHub 21. Beside Mud Pies, their selection of cakes and made to order desserts will excite your sweet tooth as well. But nonetheless, we mustn't neglect our growling stomachs! Toby's has an extensive range of mains, in which I heard are just as delicious. I was lucky to be able to try out their Lunar New Year 3 Course Set Meal, which offers exclusive dishes only till end of CNY.

yu sheng
Fa Cai Yu Sheng 3/5

For starter, we were served with their Abalone Salad with a 'Huat ah!'. It was a refreshing salad made with an array of crunchy vegetable dressed with a tang. The crispy golden pillow and chewy abalone strips add dimensions to the flavour and texture. As the dressing is rather dense, less of it would have been better.

soup
Braised Crabmeat with Seafood Soup 2.5/5

Our soup was Braised Crabmeat with Seafood, which was created with Shark Fin soup in mind for this occasion. If not for it being over-salted, I feel it has the potential to be one of the most unique seafood soups to be served in a western set up.

baked red snapper
Baked Red Snapper 4/5

Next came our mains. Our Baked Red Snapper was beautifully presented. Sliced into 3 fillets, each was tender and with sides nicely baked. Lightly seasoned, it was well complemented with the creamy cheddar cheese mash. I love the fruits salad, which was tangy and appetising with the pineapple parley sauce.

fried pork ribs
Fried Pork Ribs 3/5

Their Fried Pork Ribs comes with braised cabbage, which I thought embodied an Asian wisdom in handling the heavy flavour of the pork ribs. The meat was tender and fell off the bones with a slight tug. It got rather porky at the fatty area but the smokey sauce managed it quite fine.

salted egg spaghetti
Salted Egg Spaghetti 3.8/5

Their Salted Egg Spaghetti did live up to our expectations. My earlier encounter with a salted egg pasta wasn't great as the sauce was too watery and absent of the salted egg taste.Their sauce was of the right consistency, coating the spaghetti without drowning it. Every morsel of it was flavoursome with a note of garlic. It could be bettered with more hardy ingredients such as prawns as crabmeat proved to be too delicate for this dish.

D-Lover
D-Lover 3.8/5

Finally it was time for desserts! D-Lover is their latest creation. The durian puree blends seamlessly with the fine vanilla sponge cake, creating a melt-in-your-mouth sensation. The sweetness level is just right for me but I was hoping for a richer durian flavour and texture.

loveatfirstsight
Strawberry Shortcake 3/5

Cake and ice cream pairing is something unique over here. The strawberry shortcake does seem lonely without her companion, perhaps more strawberries in between the layering may help to jazz her up. The mellow strawberry sweetness of Love At First Sight may bring back some fond memories. You might want to consider having this during your Valentine's Day.

lord varder
Lord Vader 4/5

The real bomb is of course their mud pies. We had one of their most popular Lord Vader ($15.90), one of the only 2 liqueur mud pies. The best part came when I poured the Grand Marnier over and dug my spoon in. The bitter sweet taste is the real pleasure.

Away from the hustle and bustle on a Saturday, together with great food and warm service extended by Toby's, our evening had been truly enjoyable. What I appreciate about their CNY meal is the subtle Asian note that runs throughout the dishes. The Lunar New Year 3 Course Set Meal is available from now till end of CNY at $38+ per set, excluding desserts. If you miss it, do look out for their Valentine's Day couple set meal, which includes their signature salmon dish.

SEAR @ Singapore Land Tower

IMG_7665ed

With Valentine's Day falling on Saturday this year, I am sure a lot of couples and lovers are planning for a romatic dinner date. If you are still researching and looking for a restaurant, I would recommend Sear, a modern American steakhouse recently opened in November 2014 on the 45th storey of Singapore Land Tower overlooking the scenic Marina Bay.

IMG_7669ed
Crispy Pork Belly 4.2/5

Specially for Valentine's Day, Executive Chef Claudio Sandri has specially created an elegant three course meal for this special day. Tempting the palate, is the amuse bouche of Crispy Pork Belly with clementine sorbet and hoi sin sauce. The pork belly was perfectly done with crackling skin and succulent meat. I like the pairing of the sorbet more than the hoi sin sauce. Nevertheless, this is a beautiful dish to impress your perfect. Do note amuse bouche is only available for the second seating.

IMG_7676ed
Seasonal Oysters 4.2/5

IMG_7680ed
Grilled Hokkaido Scallops & Foie Gras 4.5/5

IMG_7678ed
Sweet Corn Soup 4.2/5

For the starters, there is a choice of Seasonal Oysters, Grilled Hokkaido Scallop & Foie Gras or Sweet Corn Soup. The seasonal oyster is paired with iberico chorizo and tomato cloud to boost the natural creaminess of the oyster. The sweet and plump scallop was beautifully seared and paired with the foie gras. The bowl of comforting sweet corn soup made from pearl corn and PIRA grilled baby corn will be a delightful treat.

IMG_7683ed
PIRA Grilled Canadian Tenderloin 3.8/5

For the mains, one has a choice between the PIRA Grilled Canadian Tenderloin and Spanish Rice Stew. The PIRA Grilled Canadian Tenderloin is served with basil gnocchi, baby carrots and red wine sauce. While the Canadian tenderloin was perfectly grilled and tender, I felt that it lacked that natural beefy flavour that I enjoyed. However my attention went to the basil gnocchi which was extremely good with the added basil.

IMG_7685ed
Spanish Rice Stew 4.5/5

The Spanish Rice Stew on the other hand fares better with its robust flavours. Cooked with Canadian lobster, chorizo and Roma tomatoes, this is a one pot rainbow of flavours that will send you over the moon.

IMG_7689ed
Marshmallow and Double Chocolate Mud Cake 3.5/5

IMG_7693ed
Raspberry Souffle 3.8/5

Every meal is not complete without the dessert. Wrapping up the 3 course meal is the choice of Marshmallow and Double Chocolate Mud Cake, and Raspberry Souffle. The Marshmallow and Double Chocolate Mud Cake is served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. This dessert will be a joy to the chocolate lover with its rich and intense chocolatey flavour. The Raspberry Souffle on the other hand is lighter in flavour but as good. A hole is further cut in the middle of the souffle and chocolate sauce is pour into it.

Diners can choose from two seating times on 14 February 2015. First seating at 6pm is priced at $108++ per person or Second seating at 830pm is priced at $138++ per person. Special early bird offers are available till 1 February at $88++ per person (first seating) and $118++ per person (second seating). The Beast @ Jalan Klapa

IMG_5469ed

While I walked down Victoria Street towards my destination, The Beast to check out their newly launched brunch menu, I can't help noticing the competition in the area. There are Artisry Cafe and Symmetry in the vicinity, so what can The Beast offers to be different from their competition? While the competitors are more focus on their coffee and cafe food, The Beast offers a Southern comfort Sunday brunch menu with a bar boasting one of the largest variety of bourbons in the country and an extensive selection of American crafted beer.

IMG_5471ed
Pulled Pork Hash 3.8/5

Poached egg with toast is pretty common nowadays but poached egg with pulled prok and hash will be something new for most. The Pulled Pork Hash ($18) at The Beast comes with pulled pork that is cooked for a good 10 hour, potatoes, poached egg and bbq sauce. In typical Southern style, the portion is pretty huge. While I enjoyed the different components, especially the tender and flavourful pulled pork, I was actually craving for a bun to sandwich the delectable pulled pork.

IMG_5472ed
Chicken and Waffles 4/5

It is no secret that I am not a big fan of sweet and savoury combination. However, it seems like this is catching on and being well received by the younger crowd. If you are a fan of such combo, then you will be delighted with the Chicken and Waffles ($20) at The Beast. Served with a huge piece of Southern fried chicken on top a waffle and a bottle of bourbon maple butter sauce at the side, the southern fried chicken which has been soaked in milk was crispy on the outside, moist and tender inside. The savoury fried chicken also formed a good balance with the bland waffle, allowing the chicken to be the star. It felt as if I am having a chicken burger for my brunch.

IMG_5474ed
Mississippi Mudpie 3.5/5

The Mississippi Mudpie ($14) comes with an Oreo crust layered with vanilla bean and triple chocolate ice cream topped with chocolate fudge. A pretty classic dessert that would go wrong.

IMG_5482ed
Bacon Waffle Sundae 4/5

Another waffle item on the menu is the Bacon Waffle Sundae ($12). It comes with candied bacon, pecan brittle, butterscotch, waffle and choice of fig & honey, vanilla bean or triple chocolate ice cream. I though the waffle tasted more buttery compare to the one from the chicken and waffle. Never in my wildest imagination I would have thought the combo actually works for me to go back for a couple more bites.

IMG_5478ed
Bacon Maple Glazed Donut 4.5/5

I don't have a sweet note but I totally enjoyed the Bacon Maple Glazed Donut ($5). It may be sinful with all the sugary intake but it definitely worth the sin. The crispy bacon maples accentuated the whole enjoyment giving the fried dough a lift in more taste and texture. This is a must try.

The Breastly Sunday brunch will be worthy for one that has a big appetite with its generous servicing. The southern kitchen offering is good change to the usual brunch items. It can't be any more perfect to wash the brunch down a bottle of the Amercian crafted beer. Cheers to Sunday!

Brownice @ Sin Ming Centre (Upper Thomson)

IMG_4205ed

I have heard of Brownice so much that I was actually looking forward to visit the place when Luke suggested going there for dessert after our lunch meet up. I am glad that Luke is back in Singapore again after leaving for Penang for a short while. Yes, Luke is back in the Singapore blog sphere documenting his hunt of the best vegetarian food. Brownice makes dairy free, vegan ice cream from organic brown rice milk, fruits and nuts. The healthier and low fat choice is as yummy as the other ice parlours around the island.

IMG_4215ed
Tofu Crumble Pizza 3/5

Besides ice cream, Brownice also has other items such as pizza and waffles on the menu. I tried the Tofu Crumble Pizza ($11.80) which is a thin crust pizza topped with tofu and vegan nut cheese. The flavours stood out for me especially the vegan nut cheese. However I felt the pizza base was stale, probably oven from some instant dough. Saying that, I also noticed that Brownice has posted on the facebook that they have improved the pizza quality and indeed looks better than my visit. I look forward in trying their improved recipe as well as the different new flavours they have introduced such as the Fish Curry, Middle Eastern Hummus and English Breakfast etc.

IMG_4218ed
Waffles 3/5 with 2 Scoop of Ice Cream 4/5

The Waffles ($3.50) is freshly made and drizzled with organic chocolate fudge. The waffle itself was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I had 2 scoops of ice cream ($5.90) to go with the waffles and I went for the Peanut Butter Caramel and Dark Chocolate. The ice cream surprisingly is really creamy and flavourful. The dark chocolate was my favourite for its intense rich chocolate flavour.

IMG_4221ed
Mudpie 4.2/5

The Mudpie ($9.80) made with smooth French and hazelnut chocolate ice cream, served on a bed of brown rice crisps and topped with dark chocolate ganache and caramelised sea salted almond is a must try if you are into chocolate. Chocolatey and nutty, these combination is simply heaven. However I thought it was a bit pricey for the portion that is served.

IMG_4207ed

Even thought the ice creams at Brownice is diary free, you would not really taste the different as it still comes with that creamy and smooth texture. Moreover the selections of flavours are extensive with interesting flavours such as Banana Oats, Lemongrass Tea Sorbet, Pumpkin Coconut, just to name a few. The best is that even lactose intolerant people can now enjoy these ice creams!

Toby's The Dessert Asylum @ Parkway Parade

IMG_1253ed

It has been years since I last visited Parkway Parade and it looks like the place has undergone some revamp with more eateries being added to the shopping mall. I have not known of the existence of Toby's The Dessert Asylum at level two until my recent visit to Parkway Parade.

IMG_1252ed

From the name of the restaurant, I would have thought that this is a dessert place. You will be surprised by the huge selection of savoury and cooked food on the menu. The menu was pretty huge and I have to take sometime to decide what to order.

IMG_1263ed
Spicy Hot Wings 4/5

From the starter, I had the Spicy Hot Wings ($8.95). The spicy hot wings was deep fried to a nice crispy exterior. The batter was not too thick and the wings were juicy and meaty.

IMG_1265ed
Spicy Marinara Spaghetti 4/5

The Spicy Marinara Spaghetti ($17.95) topped with seafood was pretty well cooked with beautiful flavour that came with a spicy kick.

IMG_1267ed
German and Cheese Bratwurst Dawg Combi 3.5/5

Served with salad and garlic rice on the side, the German and Cheese Bratwurst Cheese Dawg Combi ($16.95) was one of their house special. The sausage was huge, firm and tasty. The huge servicing portion was definitely value for money.

IMG_1269ed
Garlic Pork Sandwich 4.2/5

The interesting orange colour bread was slightly toasted, crusty on the outside and soft inside. Stuffed with delish garlic mayo, pork lettuce, tomato, onions and cheese, the Garlic Pork Sandwich can be a bit messy to handle but it was a very delicious sandwich.

IMG_1271ed
Bean Me Up 2/5

I did not enjoy the Bean Me Up ($12.90) parfait that comes with 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream, red bean, chendol, drizzled with gula melaka and coconut cream. The combination tasted weird and I regretted ordering it.

IMG_1273ed
Seek Asylum 4.8/5

The Mud Pie is a must try here. There are 8 different flavours on the menu. I tried the Seek Asylum ($15.95) which comes with macadamia ice cream, mocha, almond ice cream with cookies and Baileys Irish Cream. The Baileys Irish Cream was not too overpowering with the interesting play of bitterness complementing the sweetness of the ice cream. Coupled with the fragrant and nutty bites of surprises with each scoop of the dessert, this is one of the best mudpie I have ever tried. I definitely will be back to try the rest of the remaining seven flavours.
