Tsui Wah 翠華 @ The Cathay - Opens 5th Outlet at Singapore's Iconic Landmark with New Exclusive Dishes and Drinks

Group 1

Fans of authentic Hong Kong cha chaan teng fare have reason to celebrate. Tsui Wah has officially opened its fifth outlet in Singapore at the revamped The Cathay. As part of this exciting launch, diners can look forward to a refreshed and exclusive menu, stylish interiors that blend nostalgic charm with modern flair, and even a new bottled drinks collection for on-the-go indulgence.

Restaurant 2

Drinks 1
Handmade Bitter Gourd Lemon Tea and Bottled Signature Yuen Yang 3.5/5

We began our meal with two new additions to the beverage menu: Handmade Bitter Gourd Lemon Tea ($5.30) and Bottled Signature Yuen Yang ($4.80). The former is an intriguing drink believed to have detoxifying properties. It is surprisingly palatable with only a light bitter aftertaste unless you bite into the gourd bits. The bottled Yuen Yang offers a smooth tea-coffee blend and is part of Tsui Wah's new takeaway drink series, available exclusively at The Cathay. Other bottled flavours include Coffee and Citrus Honey.

Scallion Oil Chicken Steak Rice 1
Scallion Oil Chicken Steak with Triple Eggs & Steamed Rice 4/5

This new main won us over. The Scallion Oil Chicken Steak ($14.80) is topped with fragrant scallion oil and three perfectly runny eggs on a bed of fluffy steamed rice. It is generous, satisfying, and very value for money. This dish is also available with pork chop instead of chicken. It is part of the exclusive offerings at The Cathay outlet.

Kagoshima-style Pork Cartilage & Wontons in Fish Soup with Mixian 1

Kagoshima-style Pork Cartilage & Wontons in Fish Soup with Mixian 3
Kagoshima-style Pork Cartilage & Wontons in Fish Soup with Mixian 4/5

Comfort in a bowl. This hearty Kagoshima-style Pork Cartilage & Wontons in Fish Soup with Mixian ($11.80) combines soft pork cartilage (think: stewed canned pork texture), plump wontons and a light fish broth. Perfect for a rainy day or if you're after something soothing and less heavy.

Tsui Wah's Signature BBQ Pork 1

Tsui Wah's Signature BBQ Pork 2
Tsui Wah's Signature BBQ Pork 3.5/5

The Hong Kong-style BBQ Pork ($13.80) is one of Tsui Wah's Signature dishes. It features tender meat but is a bit sweet for our palate. Nonetheless, it is a staple dish and great for those who enjoy a sweeter char siew profile.

Crispy Bun with Condensed Milk 1
Crispy Bun with Condensed Milk 4/5

No visit to Tsui Wah feels complete without this classic. At $4.20, the Crispy Bun with Condensed Milk is simple comfort food done right! It's crispy, buttery, and lightly sweet. Just be sure to eat it while it's hot, or the bun gets a bit tough when cold.

Egg Tarts 1
Hong Kong-style Egg Tart 3/5

A cha chaan teng essential, this Hong Kong-style Egg Tart ($2.20) arrived piping hot. The egg custard was fragrant, but the crust was denser than we preferred. It is a warm and satisfying bite.

Salted Egg Lava French Toast 1

Salted Egg Lava French Toast 2
Salted Egg Lava French Toast 5/5

My personal favourite from this tasting was definitely the Salted Egg Lava French Toast ($8.80). The sweet-savoury filling was rich and buttery, oozing out as you cut into the toast. It has crisp edges and a soft centre, and the salted egg wasn't overpowering. There's also a Curry Chicken French Toast variant we'll return to try next!

Restaurant 1

Whether you're a regular or visiting for the first time, the new Tsui Wah at The Cathay offers a refreshed and inviting space, plus exclusive dishes that make it well worth a trip down. We left full and satisfied, and are already planning our return visit.

To celebrate the new opening, Tsui Wah at The Cathay is offering a special set meal for just $15.80 (U.P. $20.10) from now until 30 June 2025.

The set includes:
– A main of either Scallion Oil Pork Chop with Triple Eggs and Steamed Rice or Scallion Oil Chicken Steak with Triple Eggs and Steamed Rice
– A drink of your choice: Handmade Bitter Gourd Lemon Tea or Handmade Lemon Tea

Available exclusively at The Cathay outlet.

IMG_20190121_223257_287

The Chilli Crayfish is one of my favourite dishes, with tender fresh crayfish meat that just falls off easily from its shell. Drenched in a pool of sweet chilli sauce that adds just the right amount of heat to bring out the freshness of the seafood.

IMG_20190121_223122_812

Available at the buffet lineup is the Cantonese Imperial Seafood Porridge. The perfect dish for something warm and comforting before diving into the richer savouries or have them along with bowls of these porridge which exudes out the sweet freshness of seafood.

IMG_20190121_222944_820

One of the local's favourite - the Fried Salted Egg Fish Skin did not disappoint with its crispy deep-fried fish skin dusted in thick coats of salted egg powder. This richly flavoured snack is deeply addictive.

IMG_20190121_223026_498

Round off your Lunar New Year meal with their Cantonese Waxed Meat Rice - for something familiar and comforting.

Din Tai Fung @ Paragon - Smoked Salmon Yu Sheng And Exclusive Dishes To Usher In The Year Of The Pig

DinTaiFeng21

A visit to Din Tai Fung will be more than just a regular affair during this Lunar New Year period. Over at Paragon, be sure to order some exclusive dishes not available at any other outlets.

DinTaiFeng25

Usher in the Year of the Earth Pig with their Signature Prosperity Smoked Salmon Yu Sheng ($26.80/$39.80). Other than the usual refreshing radish, carrot and piquant condiments, replacing the golden pillows is a heap of crispy yam strips for that quintessential crunch. This is definitely more satisfying in my opinion. I like the additional fragrance from the fried yam strip lingering in my mouth. Topped with smoked salmon and drizzled with house-made plum sauce, the combination of savoury and sweet is favourable, especially if you ain't a fan of raw fish.

DinTaiFeng22

You can even top up to make your Yu Sheng even more extravagant, including less commonly served Smoked Unagi ($9.80/serving), Fried Salmon Skin ($4.80/serving). Vegetarian option is available too, and you can top up for an additional serving of Crispy Yam Strips ($3.80) or Pine Nuts ($2.80) for a boost of fragrance and crunch.

DinTaiFeng13

Start off your meal with other auspicious items such as the Yam Paste in Crispy Strips ($6.60). If you already has a liking towards their yam paste dumplings, this will not disappoint either, especially when it is a fried item!

DinTaiFeng18

I guess our love for salted egg yolk is going to be a long lasting affair, especially when there are always good renditions around us. Be it as a starter or a dessert, this savoury-sweet Steamed Custard Bun ($2 each) with hot golden lava oozing out will get your appetite going for sure. Isn't the little golden ‘福‘ character adorable?

DinTaiFeng28

Deep fried Handmade Tofu with Water Chestnut and Mushrooms is Paragon exclusive too. Deep fried till golden brown, the interior is moist with crunchy water chestnut bits.

DinTaiFeng12

A regular dish but apt for the festive period is the Fried Rice with Shrimps and Egg.

DinTaiFeng15

And if Xiao Long Bao is too much of a daily affair, go for the Truffle & Pork Xiao Long Bao then.

DinTaiFeng9

Round off your meal with their Steamed Layered Red Date Cake. This is actually a Niao Gao and definitely one of the better ones I had. The red date flavour is pronounced but not too sweet with the original flavour sandwiched in between.

DinTaiFeng16

While the exclusive dishes will be available all year round, the Yu Sheng will only be available from 11 Jan to 19 February 2019.

Guan Dynasty @ United Square - Offering Handmade Dim Sum and Hong Kong Roasted Delights

GuanDynasty20

Guan Dynasty is a new dim sum restaurant that has opened at United Square. The restaurant tucked in a corner of the basement, is the latest concept by Guan Chee which also owns other brands such as Guan Chee Hong Kong Roasted Duck, I Fish and Sumber Ayam.

GuanDynasty24
Steamed Signature Dace Siew Mai 3.5/5, Steamed Pork Rib with Black Bean Sauce 3/5

We started with the Steamed Signature Dace Siew Mai ($6.80) and Steamed Pork Rib with Black Bean Sauce ($5). The siew mai was plump and juicy. The pork rib unfortunately was a bit too fatty for my liking.

GuanDynasty25
Steamed Hot & Spicy Dumpling 2.5/5

I find the Steamed Hot & Spicy Dumpling ($5) disappointing The dough for the dumpling was too thick and the sauce was not fragrant too.

GuanDynasty17
Steamed Rice Roll with Crispy Shrimp 4/5

Not all the dim sum items are bad here. Take for the Steamed Rice Roll with Crispy Shrimp ($6.50). It is a delectable contrast of texture where one will get the play of smooth silky rice roll and sweet crispy shrimp.

GuanDynasty31
Baked Black Pepper Duck Bun 4.2/5

GuanDynasty34
Steamed Custard Bun Salted Egg Yolk 4/5

For the selections of bun, I tried the Baked Black Pepper Duck Bun ($5.50) and Steamed Custard Bun Salted Egg Yolk ($5.20). Comes in charcoal black is the duck bun which has a slight crust on the exterior. It is stuffed with minced duck pieces in a sweet peppery sauce. As for the custard bun, the soft and fluffy bun is filled with oozing salted egg yolk sauce that is fragrant, sweet and creamy.

GuanDynasty10
Guan Dynasty Roasted Duck 4.2/5

Guan Chee started its business with Hong Kong roasts back in the days when it is a humble stall in Hougang back in 1983. With up to 35 years of roasting experience, no wonder their Guan Dynasty Roasted Duck ($12.80 per portion) is roasted to a delightful succulent with crispy skin.

GuanDynasty4
Shrimp Wonton Noodle Dry 4.2/5

Not to be missed is the Shrimp Wonton Noodle Dry ($6.90) which is really good too. The egg noodles are springy and did not have the alkaline taste. It even comes with huge wonton that is stuffed with crunchy shrimp.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

The Square Restaruant @ Novotel Singapore Clarke Quay - Launches First Ever Salted Egg Buffet Perfect For Salted Egg Lovers

TheSquare15

Located on the 7th level of Novotel Singapore Clarke Quay, The Square Restaurant presents its first ever Salted Egg "Go For Gold" Buffet available from 1st July to 30th August 2018. Relish in exciting salted egg items from mains, seafood to desserts where you can find a piece of gold heaven in every corner.

TheSquare6

The star of the show would be the golden velvety salted egg fountain positioned prominently as the centerpiece of the buffet.

TheSquare1

There are also a large variety of condiments on sticks to dip into the salted egg fountain such as the Crispy Chicken Wings, Chicken Yakitori, Sausages, Fried Tofu, Assorted vegetables and more.

TheSquare14

Other than the salted egg fountain, there are also a number of scrumptious salted egg offerings to feast into, such as their signature Salted Egg Crayfish, as well as the Salted Egg Mac and Cheese.

TheSquare8

While the Salted Egg Mac and Cheese is enjoyable, the salted egg flavour incorporated within the dish could be stronger.

TheSquare19

The desserts section features a variety of dessert options such as the fluffy Japanese cheese cake, lemon Swiss Roll and more. It showcases 2 salted egg highlights: the Salted Egg Cheesecake and Salted Egg Chilli Chocolate Mousse.

TheSquare21

While the Salted Egg sauce drizzled on the Salted Egg Cheesecake might be a little too subtle, I still enjoyed the creamy cheesecake base. The Salted Egg Chilli Chocolate Mousse has a rather subtle salted egg flavour with a stronger chocolate base. Each bite emits a sharp spicy note from the chilli within the mousse cake.

TheSquare25

There are also a pancake making machine and an ice cream counter in a corner of the restaurant, which might be easily missed if you were not informed. Press the start button on the pancake machine and watch the machine whirring away as it churns out 2 small odd-shaped pancakes each time. The warm Pancakes boast a soft and fluffy texture, which was rather decent considering they were machine-made, and also complimented well with the ice cream.

TheSquare10

Apart from the salted egg highlights at the buffet, there are also a variety of other non-salted options as well, where diners can continue to indulge in if they get an overdose of salted egg. There are the Thai Style Chicken Fried Rice, Pork Ribs with Honey Sauce, Tofu with Prawns, Swedish Style Meatballs and more.

TheSquare11

For the seafood lovers, leave some space for the Seafood on Ice inclusive of Fresh Oyster, Live paoched Tiger Prawns, Scallops, Black Mussel and Sashimi.

TheSquare22

The inagural Go For Gold Salted Egg buffet is only available for dinner in the month of July and August. Menus are on rotation and buffet items may be subject to change.

Go For Gold Salted Egg Buffet
Sun-Thu: 6pm - 10pm
Price: $58 Adult, $40 Senior Citizen (above 55 years old), $29 Child (5-12 years old)
