Chin Mee Chin Confectionery @ East Coast Road - Iconic Katong Coffee Shop Celebrates 100th Anniversary

IMG_7890

Since 1925, Chin Mee Chin Confectionery has stood proudly at its original location, charming generations with its iconic kaya toast, homemade kaya spread, classic kopi and teh, and soft-boiled eggs.

IMG_7872

Fast forward to 2025, the heritage cafe is now celebrating an incredible 100 years with a time-limited expanded menu designed to appeal to both long-time regulars and curious tourists.

Kaya Toast Set with Milo Dinosaur 4/5

No trip to Chin Mee Chin is complete without their signature kaya toast. We opted for the Kaya Toast Set with Milo Dinosaur ($7.30), which featured large, fresh, soft-boiled eggs and soft buns with a generous slab of cold butter and house-made kaya. We enjoyed how the kaya leaned less sweet, balancing the richness of the butter.

IMG_7896
Curry Pork Chop 3.8/5

From the anniversary menu came the Curry Pork Chop ($8.80). The curry sauce was fragrant and rich, but it was a pity that the pork slices were slightly on the dry side. Still, it was a pretty hearty plate.

Braised Pork Belly with Preserved Mustard Greens 4/5

This Braised Pork Belly with Preserved Mustard Greens ($10.80) was a pleasant surprise. The pork belly was melt-in-the-mouth tender, and the preserved mustard greens were well-seasoned without overpowering the dish. Great for sharing, though a full portion could get a bit heavy if dining solo.

IMG_7871

IMG_7891
Peanut Butter French Toast 3.8/5

We rounded off with the Peanut Butter French Toast ($7), made from soft shokupan dipped in egg batter. While the toast was lightly crispy with a lovely eggy aroma, we wished for more peanut butter filling and a touch more honey drizzle to balance the richness. Other flavours, such as Kaya and Nutella, are also available for $6.

IMG_7912

To mark this milestone, Chin Mee Chin is also releasing limited-edition ‘Chin Mee Chin 100’ t-shirts in black, white, beige, and dark green starting 1 July, while stocks last. From 1 to 15 August, spend $25 or more to receive a blind bag keychain featuring miniature icons from the brand, and stand a chance to win the grand prize: a 2D1N stay at Artyzen Singapore.

Tsui Wah 翠華 @ The Cathay - Opens 5th Outlet at Singapore's Iconic Landmark with New Exclusive Dishes and Drinks

Group 1

Fans of authentic Hong Kong cha chaan teng fare have reason to celebrate. Tsui Wah has officially opened its fifth outlet in Singapore at the revamped The Cathay. As part of this exciting launch, diners can look forward to a refreshed and exclusive menu, stylish interiors that blend nostalgic charm with modern flair, and even a new bottled drinks collection for on-the-go indulgence.

Restaurant 2

Drinks 1
Handmade Bitter Gourd Lemon Tea and Bottled Signature Yuen Yang 3.5/5

We began our meal with two new additions to the beverage menu: Handmade Bitter Gourd Lemon Tea ($5.30) and Bottled Signature Yuen Yang ($4.80). The former is an intriguing drink believed to have detoxifying properties. It is surprisingly palatable with only a light bitter aftertaste unless you bite into the gourd bits. The bottled Yuen Yang offers a smooth tea-coffee blend and is part of Tsui Wah's new takeaway drink series, available exclusively at The Cathay. Other bottled flavours include Coffee and Citrus Honey.

Scallion Oil Chicken Steak Rice 1
Scallion Oil Chicken Steak with Triple Eggs & Steamed Rice 4/5

This new main won us over. The Scallion Oil Chicken Steak ($14.80) is topped with fragrant scallion oil and three perfectly runny eggs on a bed of fluffy steamed rice. It is generous, satisfying, and very value for money. This dish is also available with pork chop instead of chicken. It is part of the exclusive offerings at The Cathay outlet.

Kagoshima-style Pork Cartilage & Wontons in Fish Soup with Mixian 1

Kagoshima-style Pork Cartilage & Wontons in Fish Soup with Mixian 3
Kagoshima-style Pork Cartilage & Wontons in Fish Soup with Mixian 4/5

Comfort in a bowl. This hearty Kagoshima-style Pork Cartilage & Wontons in Fish Soup with Mixian ($11.80) combines soft pork cartilage (think: stewed canned pork texture), plump wontons and a light fish broth. Perfect for a rainy day or if you're after something soothing and less heavy.

Tsui Wah's Signature BBQ Pork 1

Tsui Wah's Signature BBQ Pork 2
Tsui Wah's Signature BBQ Pork 3.5/5

The Hong Kong-style BBQ Pork ($13.80) is one of Tsui Wah's Signature dishes. It features tender meat but is a bit sweet for our palate. Nonetheless, it is a staple dish and great for those who enjoy a sweeter char siew profile.

Crispy Bun with Condensed Milk 1
Crispy Bun with Condensed Milk 4/5

No visit to Tsui Wah feels complete without this classic. At $4.20, the Crispy Bun with Condensed Milk is simple comfort food done right! It's crispy, buttery, and lightly sweet. Just be sure to eat it while it's hot, or the bun gets a bit tough when cold.

Egg Tarts 1
Hong Kong-style Egg Tart 3/5

A cha chaan teng essential, this Hong Kong-style Egg Tart ($2.20) arrived piping hot. The egg custard was fragrant, but the crust was denser than we preferred. It is a warm and satisfying bite.

Salted Egg Lava French Toast 1

Salted Egg Lava French Toast 2
Salted Egg Lava French Toast 5/5

My personal favourite from this tasting was definitely the Salted Egg Lava French Toast ($8.80). The sweet-savoury filling was rich and buttery, oozing out as you cut into the toast. It has crisp edges and a soft centre, and the salted egg wasn't overpowering. There's also a Curry Chicken French Toast variant we'll return to try next!

Restaurant 1

Whether you're a regular or visiting for the first time, the new Tsui Wah at The Cathay offers a refreshed and inviting space, plus exclusive dishes that make it well worth a trip down. We left full and satisfied, and are already planning our return visit.

To celebrate the new opening, Tsui Wah at The Cathay is offering a special set meal for just $15.80 (U.P. $20.10) from now until 30 June 2025.

The set includes:
– A main of either Scallion Oil Pork Chop with Triple Eggs and Steamed Rice or Scallion Oil Chicken Steak with Triple Eggs and Steamed Rice
– A drink of your choice: Handmade Bitter Gourd Lemon Tea or Handmade Lemon Tea

Available exclusively at The Cathay outlet.

Great Nanyang (大南洋) @ Geneo - Nostalgic Buns, Rojak & Penang Flavours Near Kent Ridge MRT Station

GreatNanyangGeneo5

GreatNanyangExterior-2

Great Nanyang (大南洋) has unveiled its latest outlet at Geneo, conveniently located next to Kent Ridge MRT station. Staying true to its nostalgic charm, the new space is decked out in retro touches, evoking the warm familiarity of old-school kopitiams. What makes this outlet special? Not just the vintage aesthetics, but exclusive menu items and merchandise that give fans even more to explore.

GreatNanyangGeneo7
Mashed Taro Steam Bun 4/5

We began our meal with a colourful array of steamed buns, each with a unique filling that pays tribute to both traditional and playful local flavours. The highlight among the buns was the Mashed Taro Steamed Bun ($4.80). The filling was creamy and smooth with a natural taro flavour that wasn't overly sweet. Encased in a soft, fluffy bun, it was comforting and nostalgic. It is a true crowd-pleaser.

GreatNanyangGeneo15
Bak Kwa Chicken Floss Steam Bun 3.8/5

Bak Kwa Chicken Floss Steam Bun ($5.80) is an inventive bun that combines two festive favourites: bak kwa and chicken floss. Reminiscent of Chinese New Year snack pairings, this creative take worked surprisingly well. The smoky sweetness of the bak kwa paired nicely with the savoury floss, delivering a delicious umami bite.

GreatNanyangGeneo9
Peanut Butter Steamed Bun 4/5

GreatNanyangGeneo20
Otak-Otak Steam Bun 4/5

The Peanut Butter ($3.50) and Otak-Otak ($4.80) versions are excellent choices for those who prefer something more classic. The peanut butter bun was rich and gooey, while the otak-otak version had just the right level of spice and fishiness to satisfy without overwhelming.

GreatNanyangGeneo3
Traditional Kaya Butter Toast 4/5

A staple of local breakfasts, the Traditional Kaya Butter Toast ($2.70) didn't disappoint. The bread was crisp on the outside, slathered with fragrant house-made kaya and thick, cold slabs of butter that melted slightly on contact. It was simple, nostalgic, and perfect.

GreatNanyangGeneo13
French Toast 4/5

The French Toast ($4.50) offered a slightly richer take, with slices dipped in egg before being pan-fried to golden perfection. Paired with a sweet kaya dipping sauce, it made for a satisfying midday snack or light breakfast.

GreatNanyangExterior-7

GreatNanyangGeneo2
Fresh Fruit Rojak 3/5

One of the unique offerings at this outlet is the Fresh Fruit Rojak cart, where diners can handpick fruit skewers at $1.50 per stick. Once assembled, the fruits are tossed in a bold, punchy rojak sauce that balances sweetness, tartness, and spice. It's light, refreshing, and great for sharing.

GreatNanyangGeneo11
Penang White Curry Noodle 3.5/5

The hearty bowl of Penang White Curry Noodles ($8.90) comes with a combination of yellow noodles and beehoon, swimming in a creamy, coconut-based broth. Topped with taupok, fishballs, and prawns, the dish was satisfying on its own, but really came alive with the addition of their in-house chilli paste, which brought out the full complexity of the curry.

GreatNanyangGeneo17
Chicken Berempah Leg Nasi Lemak Kukus 4/5

Served with steamed nasi lemak rice, the Chicken Berempah Leg Nasi Lemak Kukus ($8.90) featured boneless chunks of chicken leg marinated in a fragrant blend of Malay spices, then deep-fried until crispy on the outside and tender within. Accompanied by peanuts, sambal, and a fried egg, this was a fulfilling one-plate meal with bold, aromatic flavours.

GreatNanyangGeneo25
Nanyang Style Dry Curry Prawns 4.8/5

If you're dining in a group, there’s an extensive selection of cooked dishes perfect for communal feasting. We tried a few standouts:

Served with five large prawns, the Nanyang Style Dry Curry Prawns ($18) was a flavour bomb. The dry curry was aromatic, thick, and spicy, coating each prawn in a fragrant gravy that demanded extra rice. It was deeply satisfying. This is a must-order.

GreatNanyangGeneo23
Sambal Kang Kong 4.2/5

Classic and well-executed, the Sambal Kang Kong ($8.80) was stir-fried in a robust sambal belacan, giving it a spicy and savoury kick while maintaining its fresh crunch.

GreatNanyangGeneo28
Penang Asam Curry Fish Head 4.5/5

The Penang Asam Curry Fish Head ($32.80) is an impressive claypot dish brimming with flavour. The asam curry was wonderfully tangy, with a gentle heat that teased the palate. The fish head was fresh and meaty, surrounded by a medley of lady fingers, brinjal, long beans, and tomatoes. Every bite was hearty, bold, and comforting—the kind of dish that makes you reach for extra rice just to mop up the sauce.

Great Nanyang at Geneo is more than just a place to eat. It's a nostalgic trip down memory lane with creative modern twists. From playful steamed buns and toast sets to flavourful nasi lemak and claypot fish head curry, there's something for every appetite. Whether you're popping in for breakfast or gathering with friends for a full meal, this outlet delivers warmth, flavour, and a delightful dose of nostalgia.

Dal.Komm Playground @ Guoco Midtown - Offering an Expanded Range of Korean-inspired Dishes, alongside a Variety of Korean Alcoholic Beverages

IMG_5385

IMG_5325

Dal.Komm Coffee has opened a new concept at Guoco Midtown called Dal.Komm Playground offers an expanded range of Korean-inspired dishes alongside a variety of Korean alcoholic beverages, complementing their original cafe offerings.

IMG_5346
Pan-fried Sotteok 4/5

From the Small Bites menu, we sampled the Pan-fried Sotteok ($16.90). This dish was a delight, featuring mouthwatering cheese sausages and chewy rice cake. The tomatoey sauce had a hint of spiciness, and the caramelized onions added a delectable sweetness that helped mellow the cheese sausage's saltiness.

IMG_5352
Seafood Pancake 4.5/5

Next, from the Sharing Plates, we enjoyed a delicious Seafood Pancake ($23.90). Packed with shrimp and squid, the pancake boasted a juicy and chewy interior contrasted with a crisp exterior. The accompanying vinegary dipping sauce enhanced each bite, making the dish even more irresistible.

IMG_5384
Galbi-Jjim with Mashed Potato 4.8/5

The Galbi-Jjim with Mashed Potato ($28.90) was exceptional for mains. The slab of braised beef was incredibly fork-tender and flavourful, and the accompanying carrots, radish, and mushrooms added a comforting taste. The buttery mashed potato further elevated the marbled meat's overall texture and indulgence.

IMG_5379
Spicy Ssamjang Prawn Noodles 3.8/5

The Spicy Ssamjang Prawn Noodles ($20.90) was a crowd-pleasing fusion pasta dish. The prawns had a satisfying crunch, and the slightly spicy sauce coated the pasta just right. Bursts of sweetness from the blistered cherry tomatoes added a pleasant contrast.

IMG_5404
Cruffin French Toast 3/5

For dessert, we had the Cruffin French Toast ($18.90), topped with cream, vanilla ice cream, and a sprinkle of granola. While enjoyable, the experience could have been improved by substituting the granola with salted nut clusters or a similar option for added texture and taste.

IMG_5337

Dal.Komm Playground also offers a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The Coffee Cube ($8.90) is one of their signature drinks, and their interesting selection of flavoured Makgeolli is also worth trying.
