White Rose Cafe @ York Hotel - SG60 Heritage Dining Series - "Cherished Hainanese Fare"

WhiteRoseCafeHainanCuisine10

As part of York Hotel's SG60 Heritage Dining Series, White Rose Cafe brings the series to a close with "Cherished Hainanese Fare", running from 1 October to 30 November 2025. This final instalment pays tribute to the Hainanese community, one of Singapore's most beloved culinary influences, known for their hearty comfort dishes and nostalgic flavours that have stood the test of time.

WhiteRoseCafeHainanCuisine4
Chicken or Pork Satay 4/5

Diners can choose between Grilled Chicken or Pork Satay ($19 for 6pcs), served with rice cake, cucumber, onion, and a peanut sauce enriched with pineapple purée. Grilled to a nice char, the meat was well-marinated, tender and flavourful. The nutty sauce paired beautifully with the pineapple's slight sweetness, enhancing the overall experience.

WhiteRoseCafeHainanCuisine5
Kaya Toast, Soft Boiled Egg and Hainanese Coffee 4/5

The Kaya Toast Set ($12) comes with crisp toast layered with house-made kaya, soft-boiled eggs, and a cup of aromatic Hainanese coffee. A simple yet satisfying classic, this everyday breakfast staple makes for a comforting snack or light meal.

WhiteRoseCafeHainanCuisine11
Hainanese Pork Chop 4.2/5

The Hainanese Pork Chop ($23) was well executed. The crispy, tender pork loin was generously coated in a tangy tomato-based sauce featuring green peas, onions, tomatoes, and potatoes. Each bite balanced sweetness and acidity, and with steamed rice on the side, it made for a complete and satisfying meal.

WhiteRoseCafeHainanCuisine16

WhiteRoseCafeHainanCuisine19
Hainanese Curry Rice Set 4.2/5

The Hainanese Curry Rice Set ($24) brings together crispy pork, curry chicken with potatoes, braised cabbage and fried egg, all generously drenched in a mildly spiced homemade curry gravy. Though its presentation leans rustic, every element delivered on taste, evoking the comforting charm of a hawker-style curry rice.

WhiteRoseCafeHainanCuisine7
Poached Chicken with Fragrant Steamed Rice/ Fried Rice Balls 3.5/5

The Poached Chicken with Fragrant Steamed Rice or Fried Rice Balls ($23) fell short for me. While the chicken was tender with a nice gelatinous skin, it lacked depth of flavour. The saving grace, however, was the chilli sauce, which is robust, spicy and tangy; it truly hit the mark for what a good chicken rice chilli should be.

WhiteRoseCafeHainanCuisine13
Claypot Pork Porridge 4/5

The Claypot Pork Porridge ($17) offered a homely, comforting bowl of smooth, creamy porridge loaded with sliced and minced pork, egg, crispy dough fritters, fried shallots, scallions, and ginger. Served piping hot in a claypot, it retained its warmth throughout the meal, a simple pleasure that warms both heart and belly.

WhiteRoseCafeHainanCuisine18
Herbal Mutton Soup 4.2/5

The Herbal Mutton Soup ($26) impressed with tender mutton ribs and meat simmered in a robust, herbaceous broth enhanced with red fermented beancurd (nam yue). The mutton fell off the bone effortlessly, and the nam yue added a savoury depth that beautifully balanced the strong herbal notes. Served with steamed rice, this was hearty and satisfying.

WhiteRoseCafeHainanCuisine22
Chin Bo Leung 4.2/5

To end the meal on a refreshing note, the Chin Bo Leung ($12) is a dessert rarely seen in Singapore. It offered a medley of green beans, red beans, kidney beans, barley, taro, jelly and watermelon in chilled coconut milk. Light, sweet and cooling, it was reminiscent of Bo Bo Cha Cha and made for a delightful finish.

Cherished Hainanese Fare at White Rose Cafe is a nostalgic celebration of Hainanese heritage, presenting familiar dishes done with heart and tradition. It's a fitting conclusion to York Hotel's SG60 Heritage Dining Series, honouring the flavours that have long been cherished in Singapore's culinary landscape.

Chin Mee Chin Confectionery @ East Coast Road - Iconic Katong Coffee Shop Celebrates 100th Anniversary

IMG_7890

Since 1925, Chin Mee Chin Confectionery has stood proudly at its original location, charming generations with its iconic kaya toast, homemade kaya spread, classic kopi and teh, and soft-boiled eggs.

IMG_7872

Fast forward to 2025, the heritage cafe is now celebrating an incredible 100 years with a time-limited expanded menu designed to appeal to both long-time regulars and curious tourists.

IMG_7884
Kaya Toast Set with Milo Dinosaur 4/5

No trip to Chin Mee Chin is complete without their signature kaya toast. We opted for the Kaya Toast Set with Milo Dinosaur ($7.30), which featured large, fresh, soft-boiled eggs and soft buns with a generous slab of cold butter and house-made kaya. We enjoyed how the kaya leaned less sweet, balancing the richness of the butter.

IMG_7896
Curry Pork Chop 3.8/5

From the anniversary menu came the Curry Pork Chop ($8.80). The curry sauce was fragrant and rich, but it was a pity that the pork slices were slightly on the dry side. Still, it was a pretty hearty plate.

IMG_7868

IMG_7901
Braised Pork Belly with Preserved Mustard Greens 4/5

This Braised Pork Belly with Preserved Mustard Greens ($10.80) was a pleasant surprise. The pork belly was melt-in-the-mouth tender, and the preserved mustard greens were well-seasoned without overpowering the dish. Great for sharing, though a full portion could get a bit heavy if dining solo.

IMG_7871

IMG_7891
Peanut Butter French Toast 3.8/5

We rounded off with the Peanut Butter French Toast ($7), made from soft shokupan dipped in egg batter. While the toast was lightly crispy with a lovely eggy aroma, we wished for more peanut butter filling and a touch more honey drizzle to balance the richness. Other flavours, such as Kaya and Nutella, are also available for $6.

IMG_7912

To mark this milestone, Chin Mee Chin is also releasing limited-edition ‘Chin Mee Chin 100’ t-shirts in black, white, beige, and dark green starting 1 July, while stocks last. From 1 to 15 August, spend $25 or more to receive a blind bag keychain featuring miniature icons from the brand, and stand a chance to win the grand prize: a 2D1N stay at Artyzen Singapore.

Oriental Kopi (华阳) @ Nex - Popular Malaysian Kopitiam Chain Opens 2nd Outlet in Singapore

Group 1

Oriental Kopi, a well-known Malaysian brand, has become a familiar name among Singaporeans. After the successful launch of its first outlet at Bugis Junction, Oriental Kopi now opens its second outlet at NEX, bringing its award-winning egg tarts and authentic Nanyang flavours to the heartlands.

Oriental Egg Tarts 1
Oriental Egg Tarts 4/5

One of their bestsellers, the Oriental Egg Tarts ($5.20 for 2 pieces), has earned recognition in the Malaysia Book of Records for both the "Thickest Egg Tart" and the "Most Number of Egg Tarts Sold." It's a must-order whenever we visit. Served piping hot, the egg tarts feature a flaky, buttery crust and a smooth, creamy custard filling that keeps you coming back for more.

Double Butter Pandan Kaya Toast 1
Double Butter Kaya Toast (Pandan) 4.5/5

We skipped our usual Polo Bun and tried the Double Butter Kaya Toast (Pandan), which has quickly become our new favourite. At $2.60, it features perfectly crisp toast generously spread with rich, pandan-infused kaya and a thick slab of cold butter. The Traditional version is next on our list for future visits.

Drinks 1
Oriental Ice Mocha and Ice The 4/5

For drinks, we ordered the Oriental Ice Mocha ($4.80) and Ice Teh ($3.50), both served in large mugs. Each was well-balanced with just the right blend of richness and sweetness.

Oriental Signature Nasi Lemak 1
Oriental Signature Nasi Lemak 4/5

For mains, we had the Oriental Signature Nasi Lemak ($9.90), which comes with a large fried drumstick, runny poached egg, crispy ikan bilis, peanuts and sambal chilli. The rice is aromatic without being overly rich in coconut, while the drumstick steals the spotlight, perfectly seasoned and fried to golden crispiness.

Oriental Curry Laksa 2
Oriental Curry Laksa 4/5

We also tried the Oriental Curry Laksa ($7.90), served with a generous variety of ingredients in its rich, creamy broth, including long beans, hard-boiled egg, fried beancurd skin, fish cake, fish balls, and shredded chicken. Both mains offer excellent value with their hearty portions and variety.

Restaurant 3

Restaurant 2

Another highlight at Oriental Kopi is their range of retail products, perfect as gifts or souvenirs. Options include Traditional Pan Mee (from $1.90 per packet), brew-at-home sachets of smooth instant white coffee (from $7.30 per box), and handcrafted pineapple tarts ($18.20 per box for Classic, $21.20 for Cheese). To celebrate the Grand Opening of Oriental Kopi at NEX from 11 to 15 June 2025, diners can enjoy a special promotion: buy any three merchandise items and get one free. This exclusive five-day offer is valid while stocks last.

As part of the celebration, customers who order any Breakfast Value Set between 8am and 10am will receive a free Thermal Cup, available for both dine-in and takeaway.

Great Nanyang (大南洋) @ Geneo - Nostalgic Buns, Rojak & Penang Flavours Near Kent Ridge MRT Station

GreatNanyangGeneo5

GreatNanyangExterior-2

Great Nanyang (大南洋) has unveiled its latest outlet at Geneo, conveniently located next to Kent Ridge MRT station. Staying true to its nostalgic charm, the new space is decked out in retro touches, evoking the warm familiarity of old-school kopitiams. What makes this outlet special? Not just the vintage aesthetics, but exclusive menu items and merchandise that give fans even more to explore.

GreatNanyangGeneo7
Mashed Taro Steam Bun 4/5

We began our meal with a colourful array of steamed buns, each with a unique filling that pays tribute to both traditional and playful local flavours. The highlight among the buns was the Mashed Taro Steamed Bun ($4.80). The filling was creamy and smooth with a natural taro flavour that wasn't overly sweet. Encased in a soft, fluffy bun, it was comforting and nostalgic. It is a true crowd-pleaser.

GreatNanyangGeneo15
Bak Kwa Chicken Floss Steam Bun 3.8/5

Bak Kwa Chicken Floss Steam Bun ($5.80) is an inventive bun that combines two festive favourites: bak kwa and chicken floss. Reminiscent of Chinese New Year snack pairings, this creative take worked surprisingly well. The smoky sweetness of the bak kwa paired nicely with the savoury floss, delivering a delicious umami bite.

GreatNanyangGeneo9
Peanut Butter Steamed Bun 4/5

GreatNanyangGeneo20
Otak-Otak Steam Bun 4/5

The Peanut Butter ($3.50) and Otak-Otak ($4.80) versions are excellent choices for those who prefer something more classic. The peanut butter bun was rich and gooey, while the otak-otak version had just the right level of spice and fishiness to satisfy without overwhelming.

GreatNanyangGeneo3
Traditional Kaya Butter Toast 4/5

A staple of local breakfasts, the Traditional Kaya Butter Toast ($2.70) didn't disappoint. The bread was crisp on the outside, slathered with fragrant house-made kaya and thick, cold slabs of butter that melted slightly on contact. It was simple, nostalgic, and perfect.

GreatNanyangGeneo13
French Toast 4/5

The French Toast ($4.50) offered a slightly richer take, with slices dipped in egg before being pan-fried to golden perfection. Paired with a sweet kaya dipping sauce, it made for a satisfying midday snack or light breakfast.

GreatNanyangExterior-7

GreatNanyangGeneo2
Fresh Fruit Rojak 3/5

One of the unique offerings at this outlet is the Fresh Fruit Rojak cart, where diners can handpick fruit skewers at $1.50 per stick. Once assembled, the fruits are tossed in a bold, punchy rojak sauce that balances sweetness, tartness, and spice. It's light, refreshing, and great for sharing.

GreatNanyangGeneo11
Penang White Curry Noodle 3.5/5

The hearty bowl of Penang White Curry Noodles ($8.90) comes with a combination of yellow noodles and beehoon, swimming in a creamy, coconut-based broth. Topped with taupok, fishballs, and prawns, the dish was satisfying on its own, but really came alive with the addition of their in-house chilli paste, which brought out the full complexity of the curry.

GreatNanyangGeneo17
Chicken Berempah Leg Nasi Lemak Kukus 4/5

Served with steamed nasi lemak rice, the Chicken Berempah Leg Nasi Lemak Kukus ($8.90) featured boneless chunks of chicken leg marinated in a fragrant blend of Malay spices, then deep-fried until crispy on the outside and tender within. Accompanied by peanuts, sambal, and a fried egg, this was a fulfilling one-plate meal with bold, aromatic flavours.

GreatNanyangGeneo25
Nanyang Style Dry Curry Prawns 4.8/5

If you're dining in a group, there’s an extensive selection of cooked dishes perfect for communal feasting. We tried a few standouts:

Served with five large prawns, the Nanyang Style Dry Curry Prawns ($18) was a flavour bomb. The dry curry was aromatic, thick, and spicy, coating each prawn in a fragrant gravy that demanded extra rice. It was deeply satisfying. This is a must-order.

GreatNanyangGeneo23
Sambal Kang Kong 4.2/5

Classic and well-executed, the Sambal Kang Kong ($8.80) was stir-fried in a robust sambal belacan, giving it a spicy and savoury kick while maintaining its fresh crunch.

GreatNanyangGeneo28
Penang Asam Curry Fish Head 4.5/5

The Penang Asam Curry Fish Head ($32.80) is an impressive claypot dish brimming with flavour. The asam curry was wonderfully tangy, with a gentle heat that teased the palate. The fish head was fresh and meaty, surrounded by a medley of lady fingers, brinjal, long beans, and tomatoes. Every bite was hearty, bold, and comforting—the kind of dish that makes you reach for extra rice just to mop up the sauce.

Great Nanyang at Geneo is more than just a place to eat. It's a nostalgic trip down memory lane with creative modern twists. From playful steamed buns and toast sets to flavourful nasi lemak and claypot fish head curry, there's something for every appetite. Whether you're popping in for breakfast or gathering with friends for a full meal, this outlet delivers warmth, flavour, and a delightful dose of nostalgia.

JUwei 聚味老南洋咖啡店 @ SAFRA Town Club, Clarke Quay - Enjoy Nanyang Delights At This Modern Nanyang Coffeeshop Till 2am

IMG_9055

JUwei 聚味老南洋咖啡店 is the new potential late-night spot for anyone craving Nanyang delights like nasi lemak and curry chicken, conveniently located just opposite Clarke Quay MRT station.

IMG_9048

Open till 2am, this revamped coffeeshop within the SAFRA Town Club building is decked in retro furniture, decor, and multi-coloured lighting. Before its current iteration, the space was home to JUwei Sichuan Cuisine 聚味江湖菜馆. Now, the menu has shifted to focus on classic Nanyang fare.

IMG_9049

The offerings are extensive, including breakfast toasts, beverages, cheong fun, wok-fried items, and rice sets. However, do note that the morning menu has a more limited selection.

IMG_9056
Kaya Butter Toast 4.2/5

We enjoyed the Kaya Butter Toast ($2.50). It had cold slabs of butter and fragrant kaya sandwiched between thin crisp toasts. While the portion could be larger, I especially liked that the kaya wasn't too sweet. You can also make it a Toast Set ($5.90) with additional half-boiled eggs and a cup of kopi.

IMG_9052
Chicken Curry Chee Cheong Fun 3.5/5

The Chicken Curry Chee Cheong Fun ($7.90) came paired with an assortment of ingredients - chicken, beans, beancurd skin, tau pok and pig skin. The curry was aromatic, but I wished the cheong fun was smoother.

IMG_9050

IMG_9054
Penang Char Kuey Teow 3.5/5

The Penang Char Kuey Teow ($10.90) carried a decent amount of flavour and wok hei, but it was a pity that the kway teow we had leaned to one of a harder texture. The dish was fried with fishcake, prawn, egg and lap cheong.

IMG_9051
Prawn Paste Chicken Mid Joint 4/5

Our Prawn Paste Chicken Mid Joint ($8.90) was served piping hot, with each piece fried to a crunch that you would like your har cheong gai to have. These were nicely marinated, and its meat remained juicy.

IMG_9057
Nasi Lemak with Crispy Fried Chicken Whole Leg Combo 4.2/5

Last but not least, we had to try JUwei's Nasi Lemak with Crispy Fried Chicken Whole Leg Combo ($12.90), a dish we saw many other diners enjoying. It was nicely served on a wooden platter with sides of achar, keropok, curry vegetables, egg, and a bowl of soup. The rice could be more lemak, but the texture was done well and fluffy. The highlight was the chunky chicken leg that came with crisp skin and tender meat, accompanied by extra crisp bits for added crunch. The soup was a miss, but the sambal added a sweet-spicy hit.
