HotChic2 @ The Grandstand - New Pet and Kid-friendly Cafe Serves Exciting And Creative Fusion Dishes

HotChic1

Previously a hawker store at Bukit Batok known as HotChic, HotChic2 is the founding team's newest venture to offer a more diverse and experimental menu. Located within The Grandstand, the pet and kid-friendly cafe serves innovative fusion dishes inspired by cuisines all over the globe that are pleasing to both the eyes and the palate.

HotChic6
Build-Your-Own-Potion 3.8/5

We had fun exploring their fascinating drinks menu to kickstart the meal, with a customizable DIY-style Build-Your-Own-Potion ($9.50) to create your dream concoctions. I chose the vanilla butterfly pea for the base soda flavour, followed by a side of fruit (preserved oranges) and a mint leaf topping. While we enjoyed the refreshing and tangy soda, the drink's colour changing layers also make for a very instagrammable shot.

HotChic10
Hotchic Ceviche 4.2/5

The Hotchic Ceviche ($12) consists of fresh Norwegian salmon slices dressed in Hotchic secret marination and sambal mayo and comes topped with lychee boba and tobiko. I loved how the sambal mayo gives a subtle kick of spice and flavours to the fresh salmon, while the lychee boba brings a burst of refreshing fruity finish to the dish.

HotChic14
Sake Mussels with Truffles 4/5

The Sake Mussels with Truffles ($14) was also no less impressive with a rich umami-filled broth of "shiok" sake and generous amounts of fresh blue mussels. It is paired with furikake sourdough to mop up the remaining broth. If you're a fan of sake, this is definitely a dish to go for.

HotChic11
Mentaiko with Lime Fries 3.8/5

The Mentaiko with Lime Fries ($12) comes in a giant bowl of fluffy crinkle cut fries, doused in a generous amount of mentaiko sauce.

HotChic19
Oppa Su Dong Po 4.2/5

The Oppa Su Dong Po ($27) is a Chinese-Korean-Japanese fusion main, consisting of slow-braised pork belly accompanied by peach kimchi and a HotChic2 invention, TARO-yaki balls. The best way to enjoy the dish and savour the flavours entirely is to wrap the tender pork belly meat with some peach kimchi and sour plum mayo in a piece of lettuce.

HotChic17
Hot Chic Chicken Roulade 4/5

The Hot Chic Chicken Roulade ($28) features tender chicken thigh pieces stuffed with secret recipe braised rice with yam & mushrooms, Justin's cucumber, and served with foie gras pate with furikake sourdough. The dish also came with a small jar of strawberry grape jam to cut through the meat's richness. The refreshing sweet fruity flavour of the jam helped to cleanse the palate as well.

HotChic29
Prawn & Mushroom Aglio 3.8/5

From the pasta selections, we had the Prawn & Mushroom Aglio ($16). A classic dish done well, the pasta is cooked to a perfect al dente, and the fresh prawns used are also juicy and tender.

HotChic23
Pan Fried Crayfish with Goth Pasta 3.5/5

While we enjoyed the rest of the dishes, the Pan Fried Crayfish with Goth Pasta ($19) fell under expectations, as we felt that the pasta was a tad too dry and lacked the squid ink flavour.

HotChic15
When-Chef-Tries-To-Be-Atas - Starter 3.8/5

We also tried the WHEN-CHEF-TRIES-TO-BE-ATAS set menu ($68), consisting of a starter, main and dessert. We started with a Bacon Foie Gras Pate that comes with macerated cherry tomatoes, crushed nuts and Japanese musk melon to pair with the spiced furikake sourdough.

HotChic27
When-Chef-Tries-To-Be-Atas - Main 4.2/5

This is followed by the main dish of Pan-Roasted Shichimi rubbed Pigeon, with Hazelnut Mash, bacon soil, braised quail eggs, as well as a myriad of vegetables on the side. While the pigeon meat is soft and tender, it has a slightly gamier taste than chicken meat. However, we enjoyed this immensely, as the cherry tomatoes helped to cut away some of the gaminess.

HotChic25
When-Chef-Tries-To-Be-Atas - Dessert 4/5

We ended the meal with a Turkish-inspired dessert. It was named "It's a secret" on the menu, as the desserts are meant to be a surprise and changes with the season. Besides the gorgeous presentation, the desserts scored in terms of taste as well - the bitterness of the creamy coffee custard complemented well with the pistachio crumbs and the sweetness of the crushed honeycomb and fruits.

KaraCafe7

The Big Brekkie Waffle Plate ($22) is a hearty rendition of the classic American Big Breakfast with corn waffles, grilled sausage, crispy bacon, sautéed mushroom, soft scrambled eggs, and roasted tomato with a side of healthy greens.

KaraCafe8
Avocado Open Face Sandwich 4.2/5

Another staple in the breakfast menu is the Avocado Open Face Sandwich ($18.50). The sourdough bread is crisped to perfection and smothered with melted cheese and avocado before being topped with a fried sunny-side-up egg and sprinkling of kale chips.

KaraCafe3
Kaya Butter French Toast 4/5

For desserts, we had their Kaya Butter French Toast ($14), which is inspired by the traditional Singapore breakfast food of kaya toast. The gorgeous dish features fragrant pandan bread dusted generously with toasted coconut flakes, capped with seasonal fresh fruits and edible flowers.

KaraCafe6
Okonomiyaki Truffe Tots 4/5

We also had a side of their signature Okonomiyaki Truffle Tots ($12) which comes in a generous portion of crispy tater tots doused in an umami okonomiyaki sauce.

Botanico @ The Garage (Singapore Botanic Gardens) - 2019 World Gourmet Summit Rising Female Chef Of The Year Brings new Maturity And Confidence In Her Creations

Botanico18

My last visit to Botanico at The Garage was 3 years ago when Chef Sue takes the helm introducing her interpretation of Asian flavours in her dishes. Since then, she has grown from strength to strength, winning the 2019 Rising Female Chef of the Year and spent time in the kitchens of Michelin-starred Mugaritz polishing her culinary skills.

Botanico2
Beef Tongue Tacos 3.5/5

Botanico4

I guess no one has ever seen or tried taco presented in such a matter. The Beef Tongue Tacos ($18) is served jicama slaw, toasted rice, ginger flower, baby bokchoy and cashew cream. To enjoy it, simply piece everything together and have it in one mouthful to get the different textures and flavours all at play in one go.

Botanico6
Corn Pani Puri 4/5

The Corn Pani Puri ($10) is a playful touch by Chef Sue where puffed little pillows of Indian-inspired puri pastry acted as a cup, holding within it, spiced baby corn and a rich espuma of curried Japanese corn. Pop this in the mouth for a burst of aromatic flavours dancing in the mouth.

Botanico8
Rojak 3.5/5

The Rojak ($15) may look plain, but it is actually packed with the lovely savoury shrimp paste flavour. Give the heiko foam a good mix, coating the pile of kohlrabi and seasonal Southeast Asian fruits salad. It reminds me of the Penang-style rojak, giving the refreshing salad a delightful combo of sweet, savoury, and sour with each bite.

Botanico10
Wing Bean Salad 4.2/5

Chef Sue took inspiration from a staff meal that one of her Malaysian chefs created. Together with her team, they took the dish apart and created the new elevated Wing Bean Salad ($15) using European techniques with Southeast Asian flavours. The wing beans are paired with cubes of housemade chickpea tofu, chopped hard-boiled egg, bird's eye chilli, dressed in a bright, punchy dressing of lime juice, lemongrass, fish sauce, belachan and Thai palm sugar. It even comes with a generous topping of Asian anchovies or better known as ikan bilis in Southeast Asia.

Botanico12
Assam Pedas Snapper 4.2/5

Fish lover will adore Chef Sue's modern take of the traditional assam pedas - Assam Pedas Snapper ($32). The red snapper fillet is grilled over banana leaf, complemented with saffron risotto, okra 2-ways, assam pedas and ginger flower.

Botanico15
Herbal Chicken 4.5/5

I love both Hainanese chicken rice and herbal chicken; hence I really enjoyed the Herbal Chicken ($29) at Botanico. The chicken breast is slow-cooked to tender and dressed in angelica sauce. The sauce is definitely the star which brightens the dish. Not forgetting the chicken rice couscous, which is a flavourful substitution of the usual rice to pair with the herbal chicken. What I feel missing is the chilli sauce to complete the whole enjoyment.

Botanico20
65 Degree Kurobuta Pork Belly 4.2/5

I am sure not many can resist the gorgeous piece of 65 Degree Kurobuta Pork Belly ($30) slow-cooked to fork-tender. It is served with textures of sunchoke, leek flowers and housemade soy-vinegar infused with Szechuan peppercorns.

Botanico22
Crab Rissoni 4.8/5

The crowd favourite definitely goes to the Crab Rissoni ($32). The outer circle is a ring of Japanese deep-sea red crab and blue swimmer crab. The internal circle is Japanese nori rissoni and a comte custard right in the middle. The beautiful dish is sprinkled with octopus bottarga made in house with octopus egg. Give everything a good mix, to get the lovely crustacean's sweetness swimming in each mouth fill.

Botanico24
BGR (Black Glutinous Rice) 4/5

Even the desserts at Botanico are inspired by flavours in Southeast Asia. First up is the BGR ($12), a playful name for the black glutinous rice dessert recreated with a modern look. It came in the form of black glutinous rice mochi cake topped with toasted rice ice cream and compressed coconut resting on a bed black glutinous rice foam.

Botanico25
Ondeh Ondeh 3.5/5

Familiar yet not is the Ondeh Ondeh ($12). The beloved nonya kueh is transformed into a bowl of pandan glutinous rice cake with coconut foam, kaya ice cream and gula melaka. It is definitely interesting and yummy, but I still miss the oozing gula melaka moment whenever one bites into the traditional ondeh ondeh.

Having dined at Botanico when Chef Sue first took over the helm, I can really taste the improvement in her culinary skill. Her creations now reflect a greater nuance and finesse with a new focus on South East Asian flavours.

The Real Peranakan @ Hillcrest - Authentic Peranakan Helmed By Veteran Peranakan Chef Philip Chia

TheRealPeranakan25

The Real Peranakan is a new Peranakan cuisine restaurant opened in Hillcrest, spearheaded by Chef Philip Chia. I first tasted his cooking back in 2011 when he has an event at Orchid Country Club, that is probably my first introduction to Peranakan cuisine. Not only is he a renowned MasterChef with over 50 years of experience, but he is also an established Peranakan cookbook author and the official consultant for the Channel 8 hit TV Show 'The Little Nonya'.

TheRealPeranakan3
Hee Peow Soup 4/5

TheRealPeranakan4

We started the dinner with a bowl of Hee Peow Soup ($16.80). Unlike other Peranakan restaurants, the Hee Peow Soup comes with three different types of handmade balls - prawn, pork and fish. It even has an egg roll with fish paste. Having visited many Peranakan restaurants, I am pleasantly surprised to taste the dedication in a simple bowl of soup.

TheRealPeranakan7
Nonya Chap Chye 4.8/5

A mainstay of every Peranakan household is the Nonya Chap Chye ($16.80). The version here impresses me with the distinct flavours from the fermented beancurd, giving the mixed vegetable dish its character.

TheRealPeranakan10
Babi Pongtay 4.8/5

An excellent dish is the Babi Pongtay ($22). The recipe has been passed down through 5 generations, requiring a painstaking 3 to 4 hours of labour in the kitchen. Once again, unlike other Peranakan restaurants, the Babi Pongtay is cut into melt in the mouth slices, not pieces. We are told to either crush the fresh chilli into the gravy or eat with it together with the pork belly. It will bring the whole enjoyment into life.

TheRealPeranakan13
Ngoh Hiang 4/5

The Ngoh Hiang ($15.80) is a common dish that is available in almost every restaurants. The one here stands out for me for its extremely crispy beancurd skin. You can also bite into diced carrots and water chestnuts for that extra crunch.

TheRealPeranakan16
Sambal Udang Belimbing 4.2/5

Belimbing is not a common ingredient being served nowadays as it is not readily available in the market nowadays. For those that have not tried it before, it is a sourish baby star. Chef Philip has elevated the Sambal Udang ($26.80) with the addition of Belimbing. The tarty and refreshing flavour complemented the rich taste of coconut milk perfectly.

TheRealPeranakan17
Ayam Buah Keluak 4.5/5

Another staple dish is the Ayam Buah Keluak ($20.80). Buak Keluak is also known as the Asian truffle, which has an acquire taste that not many people enjoyed. I personally like the creamy earthiness and nuttiness of the buah keluak nut. Slow-cooked together with the chicken pieces, it gives the tender chicken a delectable full-bodied flavour.

TheRealPeranakan22
Nonya Kuehs 4/5

End your meal with an assortment of Nonya Kuehs. I always love the colourful sight of Nonya kuehs. You will definitely be in for a treat.

The Real Peranakan indeed takes pride in their mission in search of heritage Peranakan cuisine, welcoming diners to embark on a culinary treat and rediscover heritage dishes in a modern and contemporary setting. In celebration of The Real Peranakan's official launch, diners can enjoy an additional main course with any four main courses purchased, exclusively for one month only, from 21 October to 20 November 2020.

Elixir Boutique Roasters @ Serene Centre - Reintroducing The Good Old Full-bodied, Bold And Straight-forward Espresso Roasts, While Bringing In The New

ElixirBoutiqueRoaster4

Elixir Boutique Roasters at Serene Centre is all about bold and straight-forward espresso roasts. Beans are chosen from the South America region for the finest quality espresso blends and the ability to handle dark roasts without turning overly bitter. Black or White, you get to choose the beans from the variety of single origins and blends available. But beyond just Black and White, the coffee beans are also roasted specifically to harmonise with spirits for their range of Crafted Coffee-Centric Cocktails. To accompany your coffee and cocktails is a selection of brunch dishes and mains, available from 8.30am till 4pm daily, except Wednesday.

ElixirBoutiqueRoaster34
Killer Queen

Elixir's take on Italian aperitif cocktails, Killer Queen is made with homemade cascara syrup and Disaronno Italian Liqueur. Cascara, the coffee cherries which is usually discarded, is apparently a flavorful and antioxidant-packed ingredient that can be used in ways such as this. Pairing it with the amaretto-tasting liqueur, and there you have a sweet, refreshing pre-meal drink.

ElixirBoutiqueRoaster36
Same Ole’ Situation

Inspired by Old Fashioned, Same Ole’ Situation is made combining Homemade bitters with Costa Rica Las Trojas single origin. If you like it simple, this would be your drink.

ElixirBoutiqueRoaster38
Stormbringer

Stormbringer is intense - a double shot of Guatemala Antigua Santo Domingo espresso with Ron Zacapa 23 Solera Whisky.

ElixirBoutiqueRoaster8
Brulee French Toast 3/5

For a sweet start, Brûlée French Toast ($18) with seasonal fresh fruits and chantilly cream will delight you with its brulee brioche toast. The brioche itself was yummy - very crusty, with very light and airy body. I really like that it was not soggy with custard. The burned sugar taste of the caramelised surface imparts a smoky flavour, which harmonises with the berries and cream.

ElixirBoutiqueRoaster15
Truffle Eggs and Prosciutto 3.5/5

For something heartier, after all, it's a Brunch, Truffle Eggs and Prosciutto ($22) is preferred. I like the combination of textures and flavours of the different elements in this dish. The prosciutto was soft and had a rich mouthfeel, and its saltiness flavoured the creamy, buttery eggs well. The peppery arugula complements these rich elements, while the sweet brioche binds them all together.

ElixirBoutiqueRoaster23
Wagyu Beef Cheek Rendang 3/5

Mains are available from 11am onwards. Wagyu Beef Cheek Rendang ($22) is a laborious dish made with Chef's special rempah, served with free-flow butterfly pea coconut rice. Although the beef cheek was not exactly fork-tender, I quite like its gelatinous texture and glad that its flavours were not lost during the sous vide process.

ElixirBoutiqueRoaster19
Grilled Halloumi 4/5

Grilled Halloumi ($18) is probably one of the best Halloumi dishes I ever had. The sweet and creamy tahini aioli works well with the savoury notes of the halloumi, and the sprinkle of dukka enhances the nutty flavour of the dressing. One of the key components of the dish is actually the flecks of Lemon preserve, which punctuates the dish with sweet, salty and bitter notes.

ElixirBoutiqueRoaster28
Carbonara with Onsen Egg 3.5/5

Carbonara with Onsen Egg ($18) will not disappoint with its sauce made using only Parmigiano-Reggiano and eggs. The dehydrated pancetta adds the right amount of salty notes and texture to the creamy pasta.

Gaijin @ KAP Residences Mall - Fuss-Free Japanese Soul Food

Gaijin15

Gaijin is a casual two-storey Japanese restaurant in King Albert Park Mall, offering staples such as ramen, udon, and donburi. Where food choices are somewhat limited in the neighbourhood, among the residents and office crowd in the vicinity, Gaijin is quickly becoming a place known for its quality yet affordable Japanese comfort food.

Gaijin2
Gaijin Karaage 3.8/5

Gaijin has a secret weapon to ensure that all its fried items are moist and succulent - that is Dr Fry. Thanks to its unique physical water molecule control technology, your fried food will stay succulent and crispy for a longer period of time, even with a reduction in the absorption of oil. The results were evident in my Gaijin Karaage ($8 for 3pc or $12 for 5 pc). These chicken thigh chunks had a light brown skin that was thin and crispy. There was a good portion of the nicely flavoured meat in every bite, rather than a mouthful of greasy fried skin and fats.

Gaijin16
Katsu Curry Don 3.5/5

Likewise, for the Katsu Curry Don ($15), the Hokkaido Shiro Buta (snow pork) was moist and juicy with a thin, crispy skin. Given the serving size of the tonkatsu, this is quite value-for-money. However, the curry can be better. It combines the flavour profiles of two Japanese curry styles - one that’s more savoury and one that’s sweet and fruity. Although butter was added to it to bring out the flavours of the spices, I feel it wasn't as robust as I had expected it to be.

Gaijin17
Gyudon 3.8/5

Hence, Gyudon ($14) satisfied me much more with its thinly-sliced premium Angus beef, which is chosen for its higher fat percentage. The longer these beef slices sit on your rice, the more the fats will melt into the rice underneath. The combination of the melted fats, the housemade yakiniku sauce and the juice from the sliced welsh onions made the rice really flavourful. Thus, it will take minimal effort to wipe this bowl clean.

Gaijin9
Ebi Tempura Udon 3.5/5

The menu also covers staples such as udon and ramen. Ebi Tempura Udon ($13) uses Inaniwa udon which is relatively thinner and smoother, and its extra chewy texture works well in both cold and hot broth. The Ebi Tempura Udon serves the udon in a light dashi-based broth. The broth tasted a tad salty when I had it alone with the udon, but its higher salt content made it just right as a sauce for the accompanying tempura. The tempura set includes two black tiger prawns and assorted vegetables of the day.

Gaijin5
Shio Tonkotsu Ramen with Kara Chilli Paste 3.5/5

It is rare to find a casual dining place that serves up decent ramen, and the Shio Tonkotsu Ramen ($12) did well with the addition of its homemade Special “Kara” chilli paste ($1). Despite the layer of homemade black garlic oil and pork fat oil floating on top of the broth, this salt-seasoned tonkotsu broth felt light on the palate after I mixed everything in, including the homemade shrimp-based chilli paste. The chilli paste provides more than just heat to the dish. A dollop of it adds depths of flavours into the broth. You will have the options from level one “mild spiciness” to level three “hot”. I reckon you can just go for level three ''hot''.

Gaijin10

Meant to be wallet-friendly, Gaijin offers sake from Saito, Nanbubijin and more from $18 to $35 to complete the dining experience.
