Tablescape Restaurant & Bar @ Grand Park City Hall - Traditional Connects Modernity

Tablescape1

Tablescape is a new Modern European restaurant and bar located within the newly refurnished Grand Park City Hall. Tablescape lead by Executive Chef Robert Chan, focuses on delivery hearty and comforting classic favourites, where traditional connects modernity in a beautiful setting.

Tablescape definitely brought back a sense of nostalgia with the bread trolley showcasing the freshly homemade bread selection. During my visit, the bread selection has Focaccia with Cheese, Sour Dough Mini Baguette, Onion Bread and Squid Ink Brioche. Diners have a choice to pair the bread with salted or unsalted butter.

Tablescape4
Salmon Gravlax 4.5/5

Getting our dinner started is the Salmon Gravlax with Vegetable Shavings, Lemon Myrtle Oil and Cream Cheese Ice Cream ($16). I enjoyed the play of the icy cold cream cheese ice cream with the salmon. It is a very refreshing way to enjoy the salmon.

Tablescape5
Steak Tartare & Crispy Battered Poached Egg 3/5

The Steak Tartare & Crispy Batter Poached Egg ($24) stands tall like a mini tower. Cut into the crispy battered poached egg to let the egg yolk flow onto the steak tartare. I find the execution a bit overpowered by the onions, and it need a bit more zest to liven the flavour.

Tablescape8
Veal Sweetbread in 2-Minute Pea Soup with Ceps Mushroom Ragu 3/5

The Veal Sweetbread in 2-Minute Pea Soup with Ceps Mushroom Ragu ($18) can be acquired for some, especially those that does not like peas. The earthy taste of the pea is still very distinct in the soup. I personally prefer the pea soup to be more creamy to hide the distinct taste.

Tablescape11
Prosciutto Ham Wrapped Monkfish and Maine Lobster on Risotto 3.8/5

I have mixed feeling for the Prosciutto Ham Wrapped Monkfish and Maine Lobster on Risotto in Armagnac Lobster Bisque ($38). The maine lobster and risotto is cooked to point, complemented by the flavourful and robust lobster bisque. However I find the monkfish needs refinement and was a bit dry. I didn't like the layer of prosciutto ham that is wrapped around the monkfish. It is like dry over dry.

Tablescape17
Milk-Fed Veal Stuffed with Foie Gras, Duxelles and Sage 4.2/5

I guess I am still a meat person and I enjoyed the Milk-Fed Veal Stuffed with Foie Gras, Duxelles and Sage with Cauliflower Mimosa and Madeira Jus ($38) more. The rich flavour of both the veal and foie gras works beautiful on the palate. Even the accompanying cauliflower mimosa play an important supporting role to balance the richness on the plate.

Tablescape20
Champagne Jelly 4/5

Tablescape22
Camembert Cheesecake 4/5

Do save some space for the dessert trolley. A variety of dessert selection ($12 each) will be available for diners to choose from. We tried a number of items such as the Champagne Jelly, Camembert CheesecakeRaspberry Lychee & Almond Cake, Spicy Mango Mousse and Carrot Cake. The desserts are really good, they are not to be missed. Its just about whether you have the space to try them all.

Tablescape18
Raspberry Lychee and Almond Cake 4.2/5, Spicy Mango Mousse 4.2/5, Carrot Cake 4/5

Tablescape offers a la carte as well as set lunch and dinner menus every day. The attractive two or three course set lunch (priced at $32++ and $42++ respectively) is a fantastic option for a weekday business meal, or a leisurely one in between museum stops on the weekend — the restaurant is located conveniently just a 5-minute walk to the National Gallery and a short walk to the Singapore Art Museum. The three or four course set dinner (priced at $48++ and $58++ respectively) provides true value for a delectable night out.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

Brez'n @ Valley Point - Bavarian Experience In A Neighbourhood Celebrates 1st Anniversary With 1,000 Sure-Win Dining Prizes

BrezN1

When we talk about crispy pork knuckle, sausages, German beers, there are only that many that we could think of. However, residents of River Valley just have another option since a year ago - Brez'n. located at Valley Point. Brez'n offers you Bavarian cuisine alongside with beers imported directly from the leading Bavarian breweries, such as Paulaner.

BrezN4

A closer look at Brez’n, the name itself is actually Bavarian name for pretzels, which explains the iconic pretzel logo. The best part is, you get to savour that too! Done with a distinct Brez’n twist, Brez’n Sandwiches are a first for Singapore.

BrezN9
Brez’n Sandwich Mit Gegrilltem Käse ind Schinken 3.5/5

We picked a simple classic Grilled Ham and Cheese Sandwich ($16). Oven–baked Brez’n pretzel with grilled Camembert and Emmental cheese, with honey glazed leg ham and pickled gherkins, the gooey thick cheese supports the chewy and dense pretzel nicely. What brings all these ingredients together is surprisingly the honey mustard spread discreetly on the bread. It greets my tastebuds with a tang and sweetness, giving the savoury sandwich a pleasant balance.

BrezN7
Gulasschsuppe 4/5

The satisfying bowl of Goulash Soup ($12) is something that I could come back anytime for it. I took on a liking for Goulash soup during my trip in Hungary and this definitely satisfies my craving. Loaded with potatoes and bell peppers, it is a little spicy and tangy, and it's thickness makes it just right for the two Brez’n buns served at the side.

BrezN10
Weiner Schnitzel 4.2/5

Adding on to the feast is Pan-fried Veal Escalope ($32). Though it appears pretty flat to me, the meat turns out to be a lot of more tender and juicer than I thought it would be, with a thin crisp crust. The tart cranberries compote makes it even more enjoyable. The potato salad at the side is fluffy and tangy, making it a rather balanced meal.

BrezN13
Spinatknödel 4/5

An unassuming dish worth mentioning is the Spinach and Bread Dumplings ($22) on braised red cabbage with butter roasted almond and cheese shavings. It's like having a Spinach Lasagne, being shaped and compacted into a ball.

BrezN18
Schweinshax’n 4.5/5

Not to be missed is of course it's signature Crispy Pork Knuckle ($29.50). I love how Brez'n does its pork knuckle. A homemade sauce has been injected into the meat before roasting to keep it supple when roasting, which explains the light pinkness in the meat. The crunch and flavour that the crispy skin delivers will just make you reach out for more and perhaps more beer too. The meat itself was quite tender with dark lager beer sauce to boost its flavour. The homemade sauerkraut has a pleasant acidity that cuts the richness of the meat and is far better than any that I have tried.

BrezN16

Brez'n will be celebrating its first year anniversary soon! To mark the milestone and to give back to you diners, the Brez’n team has announced a total of 1,000 sure-win dining prizes up for grab when you dine at the restaurant between 1st and 10th September. Prizes range from an entirely free meal to cold pints of Paulaner and many more!

DISCOUNT FOR READERS
You can also enjoy a 10% off total bill by simply mentioning SG Food on Foot from 1 – 10 September 2017 to enjoy the discount.

Open Door Policy @ Tiong Bahru - 100 Percent Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free Concept Bistro

OpenDoorPolicy1

Located in the enclave of Tiong Bahru is Open Door Policy, a bistro that offers 100 percent gluten-free and dairy-free dishes on their menu. Recently Open Door Policy has revamped its menu, enticing diners with a total of 15 new dishes to the menu.

OpenDoorPolicy3
Watercress Soup 4/5

Dinner at Open Door Policy started with the Watercress Soup ($18). It comes with a poached organic egg and sweet wolfberries. The rich and thick watercress soup is then poured into the bowl at the table. I was worried that it will have an earthy raw taste but it was not traceable at all. In fact I could detect a tasteful stock base that is used to infuse with the watercress.

OpenDoorPolicy14
Warm Wasabi Green Pea Soup 4/5

The other soup I tried on the menu is the Warm Wasabi Green Pea Soup ($23). The espresso cup holds the thick pea soup which is mildly spiced by the wasabi. It also comes with a lightly seared Hokkaido scallops. The chia seeds and fried gluten-free focaccia bread provided that extra texture to the soup.

OpenDoorPolicy11
Avocado Jumbo Lump Crab Salad 3/5

The other starter we had is the Avocado Jumbo Lump Crab Salad ($25) which comes with charcoal gluten-free fried bread. Unfortunately I could hardly taste the crab meat in it, not to mention the salted egg yolk crumble which was not detectable.

OpenDoorPolicy6
Vitel Tone 3.5/5

Lastly on the starter, we had the Vitel Tone ($25). Slices of sous vide veal loin rested on a crispy gluten-free and dairy-free flat bread. It is then topped with pickled purple cabbage, green kale and dressed in homemade tuna mayo. There is a lot of flavours at play here couple with different textures. Complex but yet flavourful.

OpenDoorPolicy17
Braised Pork Rack 3.5/5

Moving to the mains, we began with the Braised Pork Rack ($38). The pork rack is marinated in 5 spice and oven roasted. It is then dressed in a sweet and spicy pineapple sauce. If I am blindfolded, I probably could not tell I am having pork. The marination and sauce seems to cleverly masked the porky taste. The dish also comes with baked purple sweet potatoes and blanche broccolini as sides.

OpenDoorPolicy18
Vegetable Tempura Risotto 4.5/5

One of my favourite dishes on the menu is actually a vegetarian dish. It is the Vegetable Tempura Risotto ($25) topped with pickled pink ginger for a tangy bite. I somehow felt that the risotto taste like our local fish porridge. This is crowned with crispy rice flour battered okra, baby carrots, oyster mushroom and broccoli for texture.

OpenDoorPolicy20
Braised Veal Ossobuco 4.2/5

The other risotto dish we tried is the Braised Veal Ossobuco ($32). The green pea puree risotto comes with fork tender braised veal ossobuco. It is then topped with pickled purple baby carrot and a light drizzle of preserved lemon juice. Compared to the vegetable tempura risotto, this is more richer and more intense in flavours.

OpenDoorPolicy27
Spaghetti Alle Vongole 4.2/5

Initially when the Spaghetti Alle Vongole ($28) is served, I thought the pasta looks rather pale and mushy. However it actually has a good al dente bite to it. The pasta is made from rice flour without egg and tossed in a creamy Japanese white miso sauce. Not forgetting the generous serving of sweet white clams.

OpenDoorPolicy26
Sous Vide Salmon 4.5/5

Another delicious dish on the menu is the Sous Vide Salmon ($32) marinated in garlic and thyme. It was cooked to a beautiful pink and served in a braised miso chilli daikon broth with milk cabbage and fresh cherry tomatoes, topped with delicate dill foam. Although salmon is used, the whole execution felt like having a Teochew style steamed fish.

OpenDoorPolicy33
Pan Seared Threadfin 3/5

We also had the Pan Seared Threadfin ($32) on a sweet and spicy Thai mango salad, tossed with cashew nuts and sakura shrimp. I thought the mango salad lacked the spicy and tangy punch for the characteristic for Thai cuisine. It was too mild.

OpenDoorPolicy41
Dairy-Free Apple Crumble 4/5

A warm and comforting dessert on the menu is the Dairy-Free Apple Crumble ($16). The sous vide apple chunks are marinated in 8 different spices. It is topped with crunchy oat flour and extra virgin coconut oil crumble. This is best paired with the cashew nut milk creme anglais.

OpenDoorPolicy35
Calamansi Chocolate Tart 4.8/5

The Calamansi Chocolate Tart ($16) is definitely one of the prettiest tart I have eaten. The yolk-based calamansi and lime zest custard sits in a no-bake bitter chocolate tartshell. This is then topped with dollops of torched meringue and dehydrated calamansi slices. In my wildest dream, I never thought the combination can be so harmonized and yummy.

Dolce Vita @ Mandarin Oriental Singapore - Discover The New And Refreshed Dolce Vita

3Z5A1394ed

Dolce Vita at Mandarin Oriental Singapore has reopened its doors with a fresh sense of sophistication and modernity. In the shades of browns and neutral tones, two classic Italian black and white tile showpieces stood out, promising you an authentic Italian fare with an added flavour of excitement. Other added features like an accent wall with vertical slit windows which allows you to catch the chefs in action has shaken up its traditional format as well, perhaps to align with the image of its head chef, Chef Marco Manocchio! We got the chance to be hosted for a Chef's tasting, to get a glimpse of his creative mind through the dishes, which are presented onto the table with a modern twist.

3Z5A1404ed

20170529_191445_HDR
Vitello Tonnato 4/5

Dinner started with a taste of Northern Italy - Vitello Tonnato. The Milk-fed veal loin tasted like a fatty tuna belly sashimi but much more creamier and richer. The classic Tonnato sauce aka Tuna sauce, slated over it was savoury and layered with flavours akin to dijon mustard, giving the meat a lot of punches to its mild flavour. The pickled petals cut the richness of the sauce and meat which whetted up my appetite for more at the same time.

20170529_194146_HDR
Tortelli 3.8/5

Next up, we had Homemade Tomato Tortelli. The idea of hot and warm elements within a dish is being played out by dressing the homemade tortilla with seared languostine caciucco on cold burrata flakes and marjoram. The tomato filling was rich and flavourful - sweet, tangy and sharp which goes really well with the savoury langoustine caciucco. When on one hand I had the warm and bold flavour, on the other hand I had the milder flavour from the cold burrata and the citrusy, herbaceous taste of the marjoram. Is this Chef's take of a traditional burrata antipasti, with the tomato, burrata and greens? Perhaps...

20170529_201259_HDR
Merluzzo 3.8/5

For main, we had a Merluzzo - steamed cod fish fillet with almond milk. I really like the idea of using almond milk with some toasted almonds for visual purposes. That gives the buttery cod fish a interesting nutty flavour along with some crunchy bits. Given cod's flavour and texture, there's always a need for some umami. And that's when the sea urchin dressing comes in, seasoning it like Fleur de Sel.

20170529_210002_HDR
Tiramisu 4/5

Rounding off the evening, we were treated to one of their signature desserts - Tiramisu. One of the most airy and fluffy tiramisu ever. The secret lies in the soft Mascarpone mousse, and encapsulated within is coffee ice cream. The chocolate texture lying underneath is like granolas sprinkled on yogurt, providing that satisfying crunch in every bite.

3Z5A1418ed

The revamped Dolce Vita is now even more in sync with its surrounding - its vast alfresco dining and drinking area that overlooks the skylight, the relax vibe of the entire space, the swimming pool at the side etc, dining here is simply a retreat from the city. The above are available ala carte, which you could enjoy with a range of fine wines curated by its award-winning sommelier. Lunch set menu is available as well, with a two course menu starting from $36++.

Upper Place @ Wangz Hotel - European Small Plates with Asian Influences

20161102_190525_HDR

Upper Place located at the roof top floor of WANGZ Hotel offers European small plates with Asian influences. This latest addition to the Tiong Bahru neighbourhood's bustling F&B scene is helmed by Chef Gregory Lau with more than 16 years of experience working in top-notch restaurants and hotels. The indoor area is rather small, sits up to only 26 guests. However, the simple furnishings makes it very comfortable. The 50-seater alfresco dining area, decorated with lush planters is just as conducive for a chill-out evening.

20161102_191812_HDR
Yellow Fin Tuna Tartare Tart 4.2/5

Tuna tartare is one of my favourite all time appetisers and their Yellow Fin Tuna Tartare Tart ($14) goes beyond my expectation with a much different style of execution. The tuna was fatty and full of flavour in my mouth. The tangy avocado coulis gives a lift to its flavour while adding on to its creaminess. I like the textural contrast of the savoury tobiko, as well as the sweet, buttery and flaky pastry underneath, which itself is pretty tasty. The onion truffle compote sandwiched in between brings the details together. Indeed, it was like a garden full of mini delights, though some say it looks like our galaxy with the avocado coulis forming the milky way. What say you?

20161102_194049_HDR
Lobster Kueh Pie Tee 4.2/5

Perhaps Chef is a gardener at heart, to be able to plant 3 pots of Lobster Kueh Pie Tee ($10) so elegantly on the rice bed. The smokey lobster chunks filling comes with tomato chipotle, which was complemented by the mango espuma atop, just like a mango salsa combination! I really enjoyed the 'fullness' of it as I find our usual kueh pie tee too airy - crispy shell with a few strands of shredded greens.

20161102_195239_HDR
Slow Cooked Pork Belly Tacos 2.5/5

Slow Cooked Pork Belly Tacos ($10) was just as aesthetic. I could smelled its Thai-ness the moment it came. I was expecting the taste to be refreshing but the pork belly dressed in homemade barbecue sauce was too salty for my liking.

20161102_201425_HDR
Short Ribs Congee, Veal Sweetbreads 4.5/5

I was told that Chef's Short Ribs Congee with Veal Sweetbreads ($17) is so good that he could possible open a congee shop. And I didn't expect it to be this good. The whiff of sesame oil exuding from the veal sweetbreads was comforting. An offal meat but these nuggets ain't intrusive, they add characters to the congee like cockles in laksa. Cooked with beef stock, the congee was smooth and flavourful but not beefy. I love the idea behind the short rib nest which is to replace the usual you tiao. The ribs cocooned in the crispy nest was tender and rich, and eating it with the egg lava adds on to the satisfaction. I even scooped out braised peanuts!

20161102_204415_HDR
Reconstructed Laksa Risotto 4/5

Laksa is a popular local dish where chefs love to deconstruct it or fuse its characters into their dishes. Some failed terribly but Chef Gregory's Reconstructed Laksa Risotto ($27) revive the concept again. Using premium ingredients - Boston lobster, Hokkaido scallop, market catch (soft shell crab), which were both sweet and meaty, the tangy coconut foam dotted with laksa leaves somehow lit up my mind. The risotto was pearly and al dente, robust with laksa nuances.

20161102_205855_HDR
Matcha Parfait 3/5

We end the evening with the Matcha Parfait ($8). Partnering with its soulmate, the red stew beans. What I find interesting is the drops of olive oil on the thin layer of black sesame coulis on top, which makes it even smoother while infusing a subtle flavour into it. It didn't delight me as much as the one from Sen of Japan though. The Vietnamese paper tuile also gives the dessert a funny aftertaste which I did not enjoy.

20161102_190625_HDR

European or western dishes with Asian influences are not certainly not a new concept. In fact, rather overused at times. However I feel Chef Gregory is able to grasp the essence of it and execute it in his own words brilliantly. These fine food offerings are price tagged from as affordable as $8 onwards too. I do hope that Upper Place will be the next shining gem of Tiong Bahru.

Mondo Mio @ Robertson Quay - Celebrating 10th Anniversary With Off-The-Menu Specials

20161011_190323_HDR

Mondo Mio located at the quaint Robertson Quay is into its 10th anniversary this year. With a revamped menu and a fresh collection of off-the-menu specials, guests get to enjoy new and seasonal dishes, all crafted to showcase the vibrant flavours of Southern Italy.

20161011_191121_HDR
Bay Leaf Cod Fish 3/5

For a start, we had 2 appetisers of very different profiles - a citrusy steamed cod versus cheesy zucchini. Using cod fish, I find Insalata di Baccala ed Agrumi ($16) a rather unique salad as the more commonly used seafood ingredient would have been crabmeat. The orange olive oil strings the ingredients of different taste and texture together. As cod fish itself is rich and buttery, pairing it with grapefruit, mandarin and kiwi gives it a fine balance in taste.

20161011_191105_HDR
Griled Zucchini 4/5

A much thought-through effort goes into making the dainty rolls of Rosoni Di Zucchine alla Griglia Ripieni ($14). The usual mild zucchini was given a smoky edge and when the mozzarella oozed out, my taste buds warmed to the comforting cheese that melted over the ham and zucchini. The mint béchamel makes it even more mouthwatering, with a refreshing touch.

20161011_192628_HDR
Pizza con Rucola Pesto 4/5

A fine pizza dough is imperative in making a pizza that makes you want to eat to the last bit without discarding the edge and their Pizza con Rucola Pesto ($22) is a stellar example of that. Homemade with natural yeast, it was crispy-chewy and light, a rustiness that anyone would appreciate. Instead of using basil, the pesto is made with rocket leaves along with pine nuts and olive oil. That gives an extra depth of flavour to the pizza which I thought goes really well with the savoury mozzarella and salami. The sweet notes from the ricotta and cherry tomatoes brings a balance to the overall flavour.

20161011_193841_HDR
Homemade Gnocchetti in Scampi Salsa 3/5

Gnocchetti in Salsa di Scampi, Zafferano e Gamberoni ($28) is newly added to their menu. Seafood lovers would like its rich crustacean flavour of the sauce, created using Chef's special seafood stock accentuated with saffron. However, if you prefer the soft texture of gnoochi, the relatively sturdier gnocchetti, made without potato may not be to your liking.

20161011_193927_HDR
Homemade Tagliatelle with Eggplant Sauce and Crayfish 4/5

What I really want to recommend is their Tagliatelle Fatte in Casa con Crema di Melanzane e Cicale ($26). Extremely light and tender, the homemade flat noodles was evenly coated and flavoured with well seasoned eggplant sauce. People around me find it hard to grabble with the mushy texture of eggplants but I thought Chef has brilliantly turned the mushiness into something palatable by pairing it with tomato and basil.

20161011_200213_HDR
Pounded Veal Fillet 3.5/5

For something heartier, another off-the-menu special is Scaloppine al Marsala ($24). Pounded till thin, the veal fillets were only given a quick sear with butter to retain its juiciness. Glazed with fortified red wine sauce, it was pleasingly rich and flavourful. The grilled capsicums at the side were really sweet and juicy.

20161011_202149_HDR
Cannoli 4.5/5

Do not leave this place without trying their Cannoli Siciliani con Pera e Ricotta ($12). Each shell is made from scratch and deep fried before piping in the filling. Using just ricotta for the filling may be cloying, hence Chantilly cream is used to fluff it up and diced pear to plump it up. I enjoyed the textural contrast between the filling and its extremely crunchy shell. The sweet caramelised walnuts studding the 2 ends adds on to the pleasure of eating these humble little tubes.
20161011_202316_HDR
Pistacchio Tiramisu 3/5

As for their Pistacchio Tiramisu ($12), perhaps I'm biased, I still prefer the classic Tiramisu. Any variation to that seems to take away its charm.

These items will be featured in Mondo Mio 10th Anniversary Set menu, which is only available from 25 September to 15 December 2016. Hence, if you want to try their off-the-menu specials, be here early!
