Lowercase Cafe @ LASALLE College of the Arts (McNally Street) – Hidden Gem In An Art School

Lowercase_lowercase 2

A cafe-bar nestled along McNally Street within the LASALLE campus, Lowercase is the perfect chill out, food and study spot for the students with its spacious environment, laid back vibes and of course free all-day wifi, as well as student discount entitlements on top of the already affordably priced dishes. Opened to the public as well, Lowercase's extensive all-day brunch menu is no less impressive despite its unassuming location in an art school.

Lowercase_Flank Steak
Flank Steak 4.2/5

A unique take on the traditional steak dish is the Flank Steak ($19.50). Well marinated, tender and juicy, stuffed full with flavourful chunks of onion, red and yellow bell pepper, it delivers an excellent textural contrast, while further accentuating its taste with the addition of mozzarella cheese and homedmade red wine sauce drizzled on the steak. The elements gel togther just right making it a well-exceuted dish. Furthermore, with a generously portioned steak dish pegged at a pricing below $20, it is definitely a steal.

Lowercase_Kimchi Chicken Burger
Kimchi Chicken Burger 4/5

The Kimchi Chicken Burger ($16.50) comes in a huge chunk of juicy korean style fried chicken, blanketed with a specially curated gochujang sauce, and sandwiched in between leeks and fluffy burger buns. While I would deem the fried chicken delicious on its own, the main highlight would be the richly flavoured gochujang sauce that is savoury and sweet with just a subtle kick of spice that is sufficient to pack a impressionable punch to the tastebuds. It also came with a side of kimchi salad and fried topoki. Although the fried topoki had an addictive chewy texture, it might be a tad bland on its own, and perhaps could be paired with more of the gochujang sauce for a richer flavour.

Lowercase_Lemony Tuna WMixed Herbs
Lemony Tuna W/Mixed Herbs 3.8/5

The Lemony Tuna W/Mixed Herbs ($14.50) features a cream base pasta cooked with tuna chunks, and tossed in lemon juice, anchovy bits and capers, before garnishing with chilli flakes, cherry tomatoes and wild rockets. Cooked al-dente, the pasta noodles boost a firmer, drier texture, while the generous addition of tuna chunks embedded within and rediscovered in every bite was a delight to the tastebuds and fared well as a refreshing combination.

Lowercase_BBQ Smoked Duck Pizza 2
BBQ Smoked Duck Pizza 4/5

Lowercase's rendition of the BBQ Smoked Duck Pizza ($15) made an impression with its crispy thin in-house made crust base, spread with tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese atop, and laced with succulent smokey BBQ duck breast meat slices and homemade mandarin orange sauce. While the chopped spring onion and crispy spring roll skin added dimensions to its texture, no doubt the rest of the ingredients are well-executed and complement one another in its taste. Perhaps the main differentiating factor that added to its uniqueness is the touch of mandarin orange slices used that contributed a citrusy flavour to the overall taste of the pizza which just lifted the entire dish with a subtle zesty tanginess that I really enjoyed.

Lowercase_Atlantic Smoked Salmon Salad
Atlantic Smoked Salmon Salad 3.8/5

For the health-conscious individuals, the Atlantic Smoked Salmon Salad ($15) is an ideal option. Fresh cured smoked salmon lightly whisked with pea sprout, eggs and red radish in place of the conventional garnish, lends a refreshing taste admist the bed of crispy mesclun greens, while an even coating of the tangy miso dressing in the salad was a nice finishing component that binds the flavours together, constituting a salad dish that fares far better than its usual bland-tasting counterparts.

Lowercase_Salted Eggyolk Fries 2
Salted Egg Yolk Fries 4.5/5

The Salted Egg Yolk Fries ($11) is one of the best I had. It packs a rich flavour which carries a perfect sweet-saltiness balance, with a light spice from the curry leaves, and a grainy texture in its homemade salted egg yolk sauce that comes with some salted egg crumbs to enhance its flavour. While the fries are pretty ordinary and did not retain its crispness, dip those into the accompanying salted eggyolk sauce, and it provides a satisfying authentic burst of this local favourite's flavour. Rich and addictive, it serves as the perfect snack to munch on.

lowercase cafe ice cream waffles
Waffle with Gelato 4.2/5

The waffle and gelato I had consists of a waffle and 2 scoops of gelato (cereal milk and pistachio flavours) atop. With a dedicated focus on quality ingredients, their gelato and special waffle batter are made in-house from scratch. The waffles boast a crispy exterior and a slightly starchy interior which is made better with the pairing of the smooth and creamy gelato. The Pistachio flavoured gelato had a rich roasted nutty flavour that screams authenticity, while the cereal milk was a unique option consisting of a milky flavoured ice cream with bits of cereal surprise embedded within. Lowercase does a variety of unique flavours for their gelato, and refreshes their offerings every week to excites tastebuds and keep customers coming back for more.

Christmas Celebration at Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel

MarriottXmas14

Christmas is coming! Whether or not you are a believer of Christmas, this is perhaps the only time that you get to once again tuck into your festive favourites. Surrounded by the galaxy of enchanting lights in Orchard, Marriott Café at Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel might be just the right place for this occasion.

MarriottXmas8

Head down for its Festive Lunch & Dinner Buffet, which is dazzled with Christmas delicacies such as Roast Turkey with Dried Fruits & Chestnut Bread Stuffing, Australian Roast Beef and Bourbon & Honey Glazed Leg Ham. While Roast Turkey is usually there for a symbolic reason, pairing it with dried fruits & chestnut bread stuffing does stir up the merry mood. Up for something with an Asian twist? You may consider bringing home its Asian Salt Spiced Turkey with Mandarin Jus (4.5- 5kg, $188 nett). Marinated overnight with star anise, cinnamon, cloves, Sichuan powder, white pepper and glazed with honey, the aroma and spices become even more pronounced when the turkey is fully roasted.

MarriottXmas27

With a glass of red wine in hand, the quintessential Australian Roast Beef speaks with its juicy and tender meat, and a drizzle of the beef jus elevates its natural beef flavour. What really amazed me is the bolder-than-usual Bourbon & Honey Glazed Leg Ham, that is amazingly moist and juicy, lined with a thin layer of seasoned fats.

MarriottXmas6

Indulge in hot seafood highlights such as Lobster Thermidor, Oyster Florentine and Gratinated Prawns, where savoury cheese and heavy cream liven up the cold crustacean shellfish with decadent textures and flavours.

MarriottXmas23

MarriottXmas21

Asian delicacies also join in with popular dishes such as Singapore Chilli Crab; Salted Egg Prawns; Braised Pork Belly with Light Soya Sauce etc.

MarriottXmas4

Christmas desserts are definitely one of my favourites, simply because most of them have elements of alchohol infused ingredients. The Baked Speculoos Caramel Lotus Cookies Cheesecake (1kg, $68nett) is a crowd-pleaser with its light and fluffy texture but what stood out for me is the Steamed Plum Pudding with Brandy Sauce. I love its dark and chocolatey notes and hints of winey flavour that permeates the pudding. While Santa’s Amaretto Tipple is generous with its mini Amaretto shot, English Sherry Trifle wins with its Sherry soaked cherries.

MarriottXmas3

Relive the yearly tradition with this year's Coffee Praline Dulcey Yule Log - the core lies almond dacquoise sponge that is supported with a layer of crispy praline. A slather of a layer of rich white coffee chocolate mousse binds them together, before wrapping all up with premium Valrhona dulcey chocolate cream.

Yan Restaurant (宴) @ National Gallery Singapore - Hairy Crab Season Is Back

XMDVE9860

Autumn is the season to enjoy hairy crabs, and Yan at the National Gallery has crafted a Hairy Crabs fare just for this short period from 15 November to 15 December 2017. What's interesting to know is that these hairy crabs are from the Netherlands, where waters are known to be much more untouched, hence producing meatier and bigger breeds. While steaming is probably the most ideal and common way to relish their flavours, Yan's culinary team has come out with other ways that you could possibly enjoy.

FCZPE9732
Xiao Long Bao 4.2/5

Steamed Xiao Long Bao with Hairy Crab Meat 蟹粉小笼包 ($12/pc) is simply ingenious. I thought this would be similar to the common version - 80% pork, 20% crabmeat ratio but this is 100% hairy crab meat that is cooked with superior stock. Hairy crab roe is added when the meat is almost cooked. I took it all in, almost effortlessly in just one slurp. The superior stock is brewed for 8 hours with chicken, ham, pork ribs, resulting in a rich and mouthful filling. The skin was soft with a bite. Sadly, it is only available for lunch only! So do order at least one if you are here for lunch during this period.

HNQLE7802
Sea Perch Fillet 3.8/5

Other than the roe and the delicate sweet meat that hairy crab is highly prized for, how about its less accessible part - the oil? Part of the Hairy Crab Set Menu is Steamed Sea Perch Fillet 菜脯蒸鲈鱼伴时蔬, a Cantonese style steamed Chilean sea perch fillet with soy sauce, served with preserved turnip and poached seasonal vegetables. While one would definitely love this moist and buttery texture of the fish, what's worth taking your time to savour is also the preserved turnip, that has been stir-fried with miso paste and hairy crab oil. That of course didn't steal the limelight from the fish but adds a depth of flavour to its delicate taste.

DOLAE6773
Oven-baked Lamb Rack 3/5

Not just seafood, from the land, the set menu offers you a Oven-baked Lamb Rack with Bacon 烟肉烧羊扒. The oven-baked Australian lamb rack is wrapped with bacon, baked in the oven and glazed with malt sugar intermittently. The bony portion is my favourite. The edge was charred with smokey sweetness. The rest of it was however slightly too gamey for me.

TVYME0466

The highly anticipated Steamed Hairy Crab 清蒸大闸蟹 made its appearance together with 10 Yrs-Aged Shao Hsing Yellow Wine (17%) 十年陈特醇绍兴酒 Wine ($60++ per bottle). As hairy crabs are believed to be ‘cooling’ for the body, it is recommended to pair hairy crabs with something “warm” to bring your 'qi' to a balance. The wine is of course optional but whether or not for health reasons, a sip of the wine in between the nibbling of the hairy crab meat will make your annual affair with the crab even more intimate and memorable. A preserved plum is dropped into your wine, which kinda elevates its fragrance and creates a mellow sweetness which I really like. Being a male, it seems that the crab didn't deliver the kind of meatiness that we expected it to be.

CNBCE4022
Poached Japanese Noodles with Hairy Crab Meat 4/5

A similar approach to mentaiko pasta, Poached Japanese Noodles with Hairy Crab Meat 蟹粉稻庭面 ($16.80 per portion) accentuates the essence of a hairy crab by ways of contrasting textures, flavours and colours. The hairy crab meat is cooked with superior stock and roe is only added when the meat is almost cooked. With two ingredients that are delicate in their own ways coming together and complementing each other, its a dish that allows me to take in the wonderful flavours of both the crab and the somen.

BCTJE0846
Glutinous Rice Ball 4/5

Rounding off the meal is a Hot Ginger Soup with Peach Resin and Glutinous Rice Ball 姜汁桃胶汤圆. It is comforting, warm sweetness goes all the way into stomach and my soul. Simple bliss.

20171123_183133_HDR

Hairy Crabs Feast is available from 15 November to 15 December at $68++ per piece on a la carte menu and set menu at $128 per person. Although I find the process of breaking down the hairy crab quite therapeutic, perhaps due to the lack of roe, I would probably head down to Yan for lunch where I get to savour the Xiao Long Bao, along with my silky Japanese noodles.

Christmas Celebration By InterContinental Hotels Group

IHGXmas9

An event which I look forward to each year is the Christmas feast hosted by InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) which brings together the different culinary teams of the group, under one roof to showcase the various offerings for the festive seasons. This year, the event is held at Holiday Inn Atrium's ballroom, together with their other sister properties, Crowne Plaza Changi Airport, Holiday Inn Orchard City Centre, Indigo Katong and InterContinental Singapore

IHGXmas5

An unusual take of the traditional roasted turkey is Holiday Inn Orchard City Centre's twist to Christmas with the Holiday Szechuan Turkey ($107, good for 8-10 pax). The turkey is infused with classic Szechuan flavours of chilli oil, Szechuan peppercorns and vinegar. What I enjoyed most is the accompanying aromatic chilli sauce that complements the turkey meat excellently.

IHGXmas24

Baba Chew from Indigo Hotel, was the spark for this year event with their Perankan inspired creations. The Crackling Pork Belly "Panggang" ($78) is first sous vide and then marinated in satay sauce. It is then barbecued to a crunchy top of crackling skin while retaining the flavour and tenderness of the meat. It is served with pickles and mustard vegetables.

IHGXmas17

IHGXmas15

If you are not much into fusion, there are the Traditional Roasted Turkey with chestnut stuffing, brussel sprouts, vichy carrots and salt roasted potatoes from InterContinental Singapore. A new creation is the Maple Orange Roasted Tom Turkey with baked potatoes, seasonal vegetables and mushroom stuffing. Complete the Christmas feast on a sweet note with the Snow Fairy Yule Log Cake which comprises of durian mousseline, gula melaka sponge and white chocolate pearls.

IHGXmas8

For a sweet Christmas treats, Crowne Plaza Changi Airport offers the signature Choco-log of Joy Yule Log Cake ($68), a decadent Manjari chocolate cake roll filled with luscious honey chestnut and blueberry cream, A new creation this year is the Merry Berry Cheese-mas Yule Log Cake ($68) that features a soft and moist Manjari chocolate sponge cake layered with luscious raspberry cream cheese frosting, complete with crunchy strawberry pearls, almond flakes and seasonal embellishments.

IHGXmas11

Christmas delights continues with the Chocolate and Banana Yule Log Cake and the new Tropicana Yule Log Cake. The Tropicana Yule Log Cake is made from mango yogurt mousse and mango passion fruit confit, with mascarpone lemongrass cream and crunchy feuilletine.

B Burger @ Orchard Cathay Cineleisure - The Local Version Of Shake Shack?

BBurger1

Gourmet burgers in a quick service restaurant format, The Benjamin Barker Group newest burger joint – B Burger at Cathay Cineleisure Orchard is set to go satisfy your burger craving with its juicy, handmade patties, alongside with pretty sinful desserts. Inspired by American burger joints such as Shake Shack and In-N-Out, B Burger carries similar laid-back vibe with American rock music playing in the background. My favourite feature of this colourful place is the Scrabble-like menu board, that allows you to play the labels around.

BBurger15
Baller Burger 3.8/5

Though infused with a Japanese twist, the burgers here are inherently American. Each order is made ala minute, hence expect 6 to 10 minutes of waiting time. First up on the menu is B Burger, a basic burger for customers who simply just want to enjoy the meat. You can even triple up the beef patty if a single 100g patty is insatiable. Umami burger is a meatless version, with a Buttermilk Fried Portobello replacing your meat. Combining these two gets me a Baller Burger ($10.90), which I feel is really the best of both worlds - a large piece of fried Portobello which has a firm bite to it, supplementing the juicy beef patty which has a slightly loose texture. Then it comes the secret sauce - B Sauce, which elevates the burger with a sweet and tangy zing. I really love the home pickled daikon found in some of the burgers here - sweet and a little acidic but not vinegary.

BBurger27
B Supreme 4/5

Sliding in an aged cheddar, B Supreme ($9.90) gains a savoury height and flavour that are brought to balance with sweet notes from caramelised onions. The smell of the warm truffle aroma greets my nose even before I get to hold the burger in my hand. The sautéed mushrooms are chunky, with flavour and aroma accentuated by truffle mayo. The bun does get a little soggy after a while, which I think the team needs to address this abit. Still, this burger is finger-licking good.

BBurger30
Bomchika Wow Wow 3/5

Although I feel burgers should be experienced with beef patty, Bomchika Wow Wow ($10.90) is a satisfying burger in its own right. Big chunks of kaarage chicken topped with fried egg, its physique beckons you to reach out for it. It may sound greasy but the crunchy wafu slaw and piquant daikon pickles bring it to a balance. Sweet with a tinge of spiciness, the sticky sriracha honey that glazed the fried chicken gives this burger a new identity that differentiate itself from other fried chicken burgers.

BBurger17
Osaka Corn Dog 2.5/5

A interesting snack to try would be Osaka Corn Dog ($6.90) which is a cheese corndog topped with tobiko, teriyaki, mayo and nori. When the sausage itself is already salty, I feel there are too much savoury condiments dressing it.

BBurger35
Sides 2.8/5

Complete your meal by topping up $3.50 with every main order and get a side of wafu ramen slaw, nacho soup or fries and drink (soft drinks, add $1 for other drinks, excluding milkshakes). If you have always loved nacho cheese dip, you get your wish with this Nacho Soup ($3). It is a tone-down version with a tinge of spiciness but nonetheless, it is still as rich. Curry Beef Fries ($5) is similar to Carl's Jr beef chilli cheese fries but a much more scaled down version with a Japanese flavour.

BBurger12
S’mores 2.8/5

Not easy to find milkshakes these day, so do try one of its creation. S’mores ($6.90) is a simple concoction of vanilla ice-cream mixed with Nutella which I thought makes a good grab & go as well. Freshly Cut Coconut ($5.90) is available if you want something a lot healthier but at this price, maybe not.

BBurger47
Death By Chocolate 3.2/5 and Peanut Butter Jelly 2.5/5

Still have room for more? Another noteworthy item from B Burger is its Homemade Concretes ($7.50 – two scoops of concretes with toppings), made from adding egg yolk to ice cream to achieve a denser and creamier body. We tried Peanut Butter Jelly (Vanilla, Peanut Butter, Strawberry, Horlicks, Granola, Peanut Butter Cups, Toasted Bread Cracker) and Death By Chocolate (Chocolate, Oreos, Hersheys, Chocolate Wafers, Sea Salt). Death By Chocolate won me over with its sticky, rich chocolaty texture. It's sweet but with hints of bitterness. The sprinkle of sea salt adds burst of intensity that I really enjoy.

BBurger24

In terms of pricing, quality and taste, B Burger has a balance of all 3 factors, making it a notch higher than a few other brands of similar concept. Yes, it's a burger place that I would return to.

Hawkerman @ Singpost Centre (Paya Lebar) - Union of 3 Hawker Brands

Hawkerman16

The recent opening of the revamped Singpost Centre at Paya Lebar sees the union of 3 local hawker brands coming together to open up a new concept called Hawkerman. The restaurant brings together Tenderfresh, Warong Kim's (Kim's Hokkien Mee) and Ah Boy Popiah (from Good Chance Popiah) to offer patrons their fried and grilled chicken, hokkien mee and popiah under one roof.

Hawkerman10
Maki Popiah

Hawkerman14
Maki Popiah 3.5/5

The menu here is rather extensive. I decided to settle for an item each from each brand. I started with the Maki Popiah ($6.90) from Ah Boy Popiah. This is a modern take of the traditional popiah. Besides the usually stuffing of turnips, the popiah is given a coat of seaweed with chicken floss topping and dressed in mayo sauce. This rendition will probably re-introduction the traditional dish to the younger generation.

Hawkerman8
Fried Chicken Wings 4/5

If you didn't know, Tenderfresh started off as 可爱鸡 selling roasted/fried spring chicken and chicken wings in neighbourhood food court and coffeeshops before expanding the brand. I love their fried chicken wings since young. Inevitable I just have to order them from the menu. The Fried Chicken Wings ($4.50 for 2pc), I think is a bit pricier compared to their coffeeshops' stall but this probably has to make up for the rental difference at the mall. Anyway, still the same recipe, still the great old taste. Crispy on the outside and juicy inside.

Hawkerman22
Spicy X.O. Hokkien Mee $12.90

Hawkerman24

From Warong Kim's, I tried their Spicy X.O. Hokkien Mee ($12.90). Using the recipe famed by Mr Yong Tan's dad, also known as the man who fried hokkien mee in his long sleeve shirt donning a Rolex watch. The hokkien mee is fried in a robust stock with the noodles soaking up the flavoursome broth. The addition of the spicy x.o. sauce provided the extra kick to the dish.

IMG_1889

Over at Hawkerman, customers not only can savour the tradition recipes, they can also find modern take of the tradition dishes on the menu. In short, the restaurant has an extensive menu take caters for both old and young.

K.COOK Korean BBQ & Steamboat Buffet @ Westgate - Quality Meats With Affordable Price Tag

KCook14

Ever since its first outlet in town, K.COOK BBQ has been known for its quality meats that come with an affordable price tag. Its second outlet in Westgate has even more to offer - you can now enjoy both Korean barbeque and steamboat at the same time at K.COOK BBQ & Steamboat Buffet.

KCook26
Meat & Seafood

KCook40
Greens, Fruit and Salad

A fixture commonly found in authentic Korean BBQ restaurants, drop-down vacuums hovering on top of each table are installed. I have been to a few Korean BBQ and K Cook stands out in terms of its offering and presentation. There are 2 big chillers of seafood and meats, a wide range of fresh greens, mushrooms, even noodles are available for you to create your own version of army stew. Create your own Banchan with its assorted salads fruits.

KCook30

The way the meats are being handled impresses me. Organised and kept in 2 big chillers instead of being displayed out openly, they do look a whole lot more appetising than some of the restaurants which I have been to. What I really appreciate is the fact that the thin slices of meats for steamboat are neatly stacked in tray, like how they will be served in a Shabu Shabu restaurant. So even if you or your friends ain't big on barbeque, this is worth the trip. There are pork belly, pork collar, pork skirt meat, beef short ribs and even ribeye! Seafood such as prawns, squids and clams are offered as well.

KCook15
Steamboat

For steamboat, you can choose up to 2 soup base, in which I had Korean Soybean Paste and Spicy Seafood. Other options include Chicken, Pork and Beef soups.

KCook7
Bossam

The hot food section is quite decent with a mix of Korean and international dishes such as pasta, fried rice etc. My favourite is the Bossam, a Korean style pork belly. It may look rubbery at first glance but it actually has a surprising melt-in-your-mouth texture.

KCook22
Jajangmyeon

If you still have some room for Korean small dishes, you can try to DIY your own Jajangmyeon (black bean noodles).

KCook18

K.COOK BBQ & Steamboat Buffet surpasses my expectations with its range of ingredients and their quality. If you have more to spare, simply top for its Premium Buffet, in which you get a free flow of premium meats such as Sirloin, Short Ribs Boneless and Tiger Prawns.

KCook11

Price
Lunch: $19.90++ (Mon to Fri), $29.90++ (Sat, Sun, Eve of PH, & PH)
Dinner: $29.90++ (Mon to Thu), $31.90++ (Sat, Sun, Eve of PH, & PH)
