Gwanghwamum Mijin @ Far East Square - Famous Halmeoni-style Korean Cold Buckwheat Noodles from Seoul Opens in Singapore

Gwanghwamun Mijin, an institution since 1954, has finally arrived in Singapore with its first overseas flagship. A stalwart in Seoul’s dining scene, the restaurant has been listed on the MICHELIN Guide Seoul since 2018 and has earned the coveted Bib Gourmand for eight consecutive years. Known for its traditional halmeoni-style (grandmother’s style) Korean cold buckwheat noodles, the brand draws long queues in Korea. For its Singapore debut, the broth and noodles are flown in directly from Korea to maintain authenticity, while kimchi and sauces are freshly prepared on-site daily.

Signature Buckwheat Noodles 4/5

A must-have at Gwanghwamun Mijin is the Signature Buckwheat Noodles ($15), served with or without slush ice. The proper way to enjoy the dish is to add ground radish, chopped green onion, seaweed flakes, and mustard sauce into the seafood-rich dipping broth before dipping the noodles in for that refreshing slurp. While the flavours were light and delicate, I found that the noodles and broth during my visit were not chilled enough, which slightly diminished the full appreciation of this traditional cold noodle dish.

Bibim Buckwheat Noodles 4/5

For those who prefer something punchier, the Bibim Buckwheat Noodles ($16) is tossed with a variety of vegetables (beansprouts, lettuce, radish kimchi, cucumber, cabbage) and topped with a half-boiled egg. The noodles are coated in a spicy, sweet, and tangy gochujang sauce, delivering bold flavours with a delightful crunch from the vegetables.

Perilla Buckwheat Noodles with Marinated Salmon 4.2/5

Exclusive to Singapore, the Perilla Buckwheat Noodles with Marinated Salmon ($20) features nutty buckwheat noodles infused with fragrant perilla oil and powder. The freshly cut salmon sashimi, marinated in soy sauce, cooking wine, and minced garlic, adds a savoury-silky element to the dish. A vegetarian version of this noodle is served in Korea and is also available in Singapore.

Steam Korean Dumpling 4/5

Handmade daily, the Steam Korean Dumplings ($7 for 3pc) are generously sized and filled with marinated minced pork, spring onions, leek, garlic, and tofu. Juicy and flavourful, these dumplings are limited in quantity each day, making them a worthy side to the noodles.

Buckwheat Spring Onion Seafood Pancake 3.8/5

A twist on a Korean favourite, the Buckwheat Spring Onion Seafood Pancake ($19) features buckwheat flour in the batter, resulting in a lighter texture with nutty undertones. Pan-fried to golden perfection, the pancake strikes a balance of crisp edges and a chewy interior, generously studded with kimchi and fresh seafood, including shrimp, squid, clams, mussels, and fish.

Bossam 3.8/5

The Bossam ($15 Small, $20 Medium, $30 Large) here is tender and succulent, seasoned with a medley of herbs such as Chinese Angelica, Star Anise, and Cinnamon Bark, imparting a rich, aromatic flavour. Best enjoyed wrapped in fresh napa cabbage leaves with a spoonful of house-made kimchi and sauces like ssamjang or punchy saeu-jeot.

Fried Pork Cutlet 3/5

Mijin’s Fried Pork Cutlet ($18) is prepared the traditional Korean way, with pork machine-pressed and marinated for over 8 hours before being coated in egg, flour, and fresh breadcrumbs. Fried until golden, the cutlet is served with rice, coleslaw, and a house-made tonkatsu sauce crafted locally.

Overall, Gwanghwamun Mijin offers a taste of tradition and history in Seoul. While some execution details (like the temperature of the cold noodles) could be improved, the variety of dishes and dedication to authenticity make it a noteworthy addition to Singapore’s Korean dining scene.

Gwangjang GAON @ Jewel Changi Airport - Bringing The Authentic Taste of Traditional Korean Recipes to The Lion City

Gwangjang GAON, by renowned Korean culinary Professor Hyo Soon Park, brings a slice of traditional Korean heritage to Singapore with its first overseas outpost at Jewel Changi Airport. With two well-established outlets in South Korea, the restaurant is highly regarded for its time-honoured Korean recipes, so much so that it has been frequented by Korean celebrities like Han So-hee, Lee Jung-jae of Squid Game fame, and actress Choi Myung-gil, who became such a fan that she opened a franchise herself.

Helmed by a fourth-generation culinary philosophy, Gwangjang GAON presents dishes rooted in Korean royal and household traditions, now refined and served in a modern dining environment.

Modm-Jeon 4.2/5

A classic starter that sets the tone is the Modm-Jeon ($29.90), an assorted platter of Korean-style pancakes or fritters made from shrimp, pollack, zucchini, ground pork, and crab surimi. Handmade fresh daily using Professor Park's family recipe, the jeon are pan-fried to a golden crisp and served with a soy-vinegar dip that enhances their light, eggy fragrance. It's a dish steeped in heritage, dating back to the Joseon Dynasty and a rarity in restaurants today due to its labour-intensive preparation.

A refreshing cold appetiser, Chogye-Nangche ($18.90) features chilled chicken salad tossed in a tangy vinegar and mustard dressing. It's light yet punchy, a perfect palate awakener in Singapore's tropical heat.

Deulgireum Maguksu 4/5

For noodle lovers, the Deulgireum Makguksu ($21.90) is a standout. This cold buckwheat noodle dish is coated with nutty perilla oil and sprinkled with crunchy perilla seeds, while subtle heat from cheongyang red pepper adds an unexpected yet welcome depth. The fresh perilla leaves elevate the dish with their herbal brightness.

Classic Bibimbap 4/5

No Korean meal is complete without Bibimbap ($22.90), and GAON’s version delivers with over 13 ingredients, including egg, meat, and vibrant vegetables served atop warm rice. Diners can choose between gochujang (red pepper paste), doenjang (soybean paste), or a blended sauce for added complexity. Mix it all together for a hearty, textural medley of flavours.

The Bossam ($43.90) is a must-order. Slices of tender pork belly are gently simmered in a prized 15-year-old mother stock flown in from Korea. The meat is rich and aromatic, pairing beautifully with fresh cabbage, homemade kimchi, saeujeot (fermented shrimp sauce), and ssamjang. It's a dish that exemplifies depth, balance, and tradition, all presented on a Hojokban, a traditional Korean tray.

Gaon Galbi 4.8/5

Another signature, the GAON Galbi ($69.90), features premium beef short ribs sous-vide for over 24 hours in a blend of 20 herbs and spices. Finished with a light torch for smoky depth, the ribs retain a satisfying bite while being exceptionally tender. Served ceremoniously on a Hojokban tray, this dish pays homage to Korea’s royal culinary heritage while embracing modern technique.

Gwangjang GAON offers a rare opportunity to experience the finesse of traditional Korean cuisine crafted with generational wisdom and elevated techniques. With a deep respect for ingredients and authenticity, this Jewel Changi gem is more than just a restaurant. It is a cultural showcase on a plate.

Greens, Fruit and Salad

A fixture commonly found in authentic Korean BBQ restaurants, drop-down vacuums hovering on top of each table are installed. I have been to a few Korean BBQ and K Cook stands out in terms of its offering and presentation. There are 2 big chillers of seafood and meats, a wide range of fresh greens, mushrooms, even noodles are available for you to create your own version of army stew. Create your own Banchan with its assorted salads fruits.

The way the meats are being handled impresses me. Organised and kept in 2 big chillers instead of being displayed out openly, they do look a whole lot more appetising than some of the restaurants which I have been to. What I really appreciate is the fact that the thin slices of meats for steamboat are neatly stacked in tray, like how they will be served in a Shabu Shabu restaurant. So even if you or your friends ain't big on barbeque, this is worth the trip. There are pork belly, pork collar, pork skirt meat, beef short ribs and even ribeye! Seafood such as prawns, squids and clams are offered as well.

For steamboat, you can choose up to 2 soup base, in which I had Korean Soybean Paste and Spicy Seafood. Other options include Chicken, Pork and Beef soups.

Bossam

The hot food section is quite decent with a mix of Korean and international dishes such as pasta, fried rice etc. My favourite is the Bossam, a Korean style pork belly. It may look rubbery at first glance but it actually has a surprising melt-in-your-mouth texture.

If you still have some room for Korean small dishes, you can try to DIY your own Jajangmyeon (black bean noodles).

K.COOK BBQ & Steamboat Buffet surpasses my expectations with its range of ingredients and their quality. If you have more to spare, simply top for its Premium Buffet, in which you get a free flow of premium meats such as Sirloin, Short Ribs Boneless and Tiger Prawns.
