Bara Food @ Altez / Icon Village - True Indonesian Flavours With Nasi Bakar, Indonesian Special Grilled Rice

BaraFood8

Bara Food is a Halal Indonesian restaurant located inside Altez at Tanjong Pagar, serving Nasi Bakar, Indonesian special grilled rice. The restaurant offers a number of set menus with the nasi bakar as well as side dishes complete the meal.

BaraFood14
Ayam Goreng Serundeng 4.2/5

The first set we had is the Ayam Goreng Serundeng, which comes with a whole Javanese-style fried chicken leg topped with serundeng, mixed fried Indonesian herbs and spices. The sides include tempeh and fried tofu. All these are accompanied by rich and aromatic rice wrapped in banana leaves, grilled over fire.

BaraFood4
Ayam Goreng Cabe Ijo 4.2/5

If you like spicy food, I recommend trying the Ayam Goreng Cabe Ijo. The fried chicken topped with green chilli sauce is fragrant, spicy, and has a spicy punchy kick.

BaraFood6
Ayam Bakar Betutu 4.2/5

The Ayam Bakar Betutu will be a delicious option if you are not into spicy food. It comes with Balinese-style grilled chicken in sweet kecap manis paired with sambal matah (a mixture of different raw spices in special chilli oil), fried tofu, tempeh and nasi bakar.

BaraFood25
Kangkung Belacan 4/5

We ordered Kangkung Belacan cooked in shrimp paste sauce for a balanced diet. The rich shrimp paste flavour accentuated the enjoyment of the crunchy morning glory.

BaraFood31
Gado Gado 3/5

We also ordered the Gado Gado, an Indonesian mixed salad in peanut dressing.t I am not a fan of it. I find it weird to have cold vegetables in peanut dressing.

BaraFood18
Bergedel 4.5/5 and Corn Fritter 3.8/5

I would recommend the snacks at Bara Food too. The Bergedel was so good. It is probably one of the best I have eaten. As for the Corn Fritter, It lacked the crispiness I was expecting.

I visited the place during the weekend for lunch, which is packed. Fortunately, I made a reservation. Hence if you plan to check out the place, avoid the peak hours or make a reservation.

White Rose Cafe @ York Hotel - Rejuvenates Dining Experience With A Refreshed A La Carte Menu

RoseCafeJul224

White Rose Cafe at York Hote, known for its authentic local and Asian classics, revitalised its a la carte menu showcasing a delectable selection of local, Asian, Western, and premium carbon-neutral beef specialities conjured by the culinary team.

RoseCafeJul221
Gado Gado 3.5/5

New highlights for the appetiser include the Gado Gado and Seafood Couscous Salad. The light and appetising Gado Gado ($15) comprising of long beans, boiled potato, cabbage, bean sprouts, fried bean curd and egg is dressed in a fragrant peanut sauce for a nutty finishing.

RoseCafeJul227
Seafood Couscous Salad 4/5

The Seafood Couscous Salad ($20) consisting of prawns, squid and fish in a refreshing mango salsa dressing is excellent for whetting up the appetite.

RoseCafeJul2216
Minestrone 3.5.5

For the soup option, diners can choose either the Minestrone or the new Crab Bisque with Cognac. The sweet and tangy Minestrone ($15) soup comes with delightful bites from the accompanying ingredients such as beans, pasta, potato, carrot, zucchini and cabbage.

RoseCafeJul2214
Crab Bisque with Cognac 4/5

The Crab Bisque with Cognac ($18) is much more robust and richer in flavour, paired with garlic bread and cream.

RoseCafeJul225

RoseCafeJul224
Thai Green Curry 4/5

Besides the local classic, the kitchen has expanded the menu to include Thai cuisine. We tried the Thai Green Curry ($25) with tender chicken simmered in a rich coconut-based curry. It is served together with a plate of fragrant steamed rice topped with a silverfish omelette.

RoseCafeJul228
Chicken Roulade 4/5

We moved from local and Asian cuisines to Western fares, such as the Chicken Roulade and Ribeye Steak ($52). The tender and juicy Chicken Roulade ($25) is paired with mashed potatoes, asparagus, broccolini and baby carrots. It is a classic and simple dish executed beautifully for a delicious meal.

RoseCafeJul229
Ribeye Steak 4/5

Consumers are more into sustainable diet nowadays, so the culinary team has replaced the regular ground beef with carbon-neutral beef from Five Founders, Australia. Beef lovers can look forward to the perfectly grilled Ribeye Steak ($52) served with potato gratin and seasonal vegetables.

RoseCafeJul2211
Paneer Tikka 3/5

RoseCafeJul2213
Green Burger 3/5

For the vegetarians, customers have the option of Paneer Tikka ($16) served with raita and papadum. I am not a fan of it. I thought it was bland, lacking a sauce. Maybe a vegetarian curry will help to elevate the dish. For something for filling, go for the Green Burger ($18), whereby plump and juicy portobello mushroom is sandwiched between charcoal bun with pesto mayo dressing.

RoseCafeJul2218
Chocolate Lava Cake 3.5/5

RoseCafeJul2220
Sago Gula Melaka 3.5/5

RoseCafeJul2219
Creme Brulee 3.5/5

End your meal on a sweet ending with a selection of desserts such as the Chocolate Lava Cake ($12) with vanilla ice cream, Sago Gula Melaka ($9) with coconut milk and Creme Brulee ($12), a rich custard base topped with a layer of hardened caramelised sugar.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

Atrium Restaurant @ Holiday Inn Atrium Singapore - Hawkerlicious Buffet + Durian Bazaar

IMG_9784ed

While fashion trends, bloom and wither as our love for them diminishes, our attachment towards durians only seems to get deeper - the more the merrier. This almost 'unconditional love' for the King of Fruits is even more pronounced during this time of the year, evident in social media posts. To celebrate the advent of the Durian season, Atrium Restaurant at Holiday Inn Atrium Singapore has designed a Hawkerlicious Buffet, catering to your palate.

IMG_9759ed

IMG_9762ed

Started off the evening with my own plated Gado Gado. I was quite sceptical initially in dressing my ingredients with the peanut sauce as usually they can be quite heavy, oily or salty in taste, but how wrong I was! Their peanut sauce was robust with a fine balance of flavours, whetting my appetite instantly.  With such a good sauce, I had no doubt that the satay would satisfy me just as well. Indeed, the satay meat was tender with a sweet, smoky taste, and the peanut sauce simply makes them even more moreish.

IMG_9770ed

Next up is their mouth watering Laksa. I love the fact that I get to cook it myself, hence I can have a huge portion of beansprouts and a heap of the Laksa leaves. Writing about it makes me crave for it instantly. I don't order Laksa when dining out honest, but for theirs, I actually need to make a conscious effort not to drink up the gravy.

IMG_9772ed

Another must try local delight is Oyster Omelette. I like the chewy starch, which is a perfect contrast to the crisp omelette. The portion of oysters can be more though. Another key ingredient is the chilli sauce, and their did manage to up the taste a notch. It would have been a better experience, I feel, if the Oyster Omelette can be made a la minute. Imagine it on your plate hot and piping. Hence,if you have the patience, perhaps, it is worth waiting for a fresh batch.

IMG_9766ed

Their Chilli Crayfish is also one of their signatures. Don't forget to grab some of the crispy fried Man Tou for the sauce.

One of the dishes that I would recommend is their Nonya Chap Chye, which sits quietly among the rest.  It is full of my favourite crunchy black fungus, with very soft and flavourful Tau Kee and cabbages. Stir-fry vegetables is seldom my choice in a buffet as they are usually soggy with sauces, but somehow, this dish works for me much better than I thought it would.

IMG_9775ed

Apart from the traditional pastries such as chiffon cakes and nonya kuehs, you may also DIY your own Ice Kachang, which is always a fun thing to do.

IMG_9774ed

After all these 'works' to get your appetite going, it is time for the real work! Durians time! From $15 nett per durian, you get to choose one type of durians D1, D13 or Red Prawn. The best thing is that, you get to enjoy it with a bunch of your loved ones under the moonlight and shining stars out in their terrace.

IMG_9781ed

Indeed, as one brilliantly pointed out, eating durians is a communal ritual.  I recalled moments of such occasions, some were filled with infectious laughter, while in some, only the sound of individual drawing every bit of the durian flesh off the seed could be heard. Missing such moments? This Hawkerlicious Buffet may be one of the options for you to experience it again.

Pondok Jawa Timur @ North Bridge Road

IMG_5695ed

My visit to Pondok Jawa Timur was back in March 2014 and I have heard that they have relocated to their new location at 737 North Bridge Road. Together with Maureen and Kimberley, we stopped by Pondok Jawa Timur on a weekday night for dinner.

IMG_5697ed
Avocado Juice 3.5/5

A must order drink for me whether I have Indonesian food is the Avocado Juice ($5.80). I have always enjoyed the nutty and creamy drink,

IMG_5702ed
Soto Madura 3.5/5

The Soto Madura with Beef ($6.50) reminds me of Mee Soto. It seems rather similar except it comes with pieces of beef. Squeezed a dash of the lime or add some chilli to alter the flavour for an accentuated enjoyment.

IMG_5719ed
Corn Batter with Prawn 4/5

During my previous visit, I did not get to try the Corn Batter with Prawn ($5.70 for 3pc). I am glad that I got to try it this time round. It is really a delightfully snack to kick start the meal.

IMG_5705ed
Tahu Telor 4/5

The peanut sauce at Pondok Jawa Timur is freshly made daily. There are 3 different types of peanut sauces at the restaurant for the various dishes. The one used for the Tahu Telor ($6.90) is richer and bolder in flavour which goes well with the fried tofu and egg.

IMG_5708ed
Gado Gado 4.2/5

The other peanut sauce is used for the Gado Gado ($6.90). The sauce is lighter but creamier with a subtle sweetness that paired excellently with the vegetables.

IMG_5712ed
Sate Ayam 3.8/5

Lastly the peanut sauce which is more coarse and nutty is the perfect marriage for the delectable Sate Ayam ($8.90). I thought the sate ayam was not as well marinated compared to my previous visit. It was also missing that charred smokey flavour I was looking for.

IMG_5711ed
Mie Goreng Jawa 4/5

If you want to just have a quick meal and you do not want to over order, I would recommend the Mie Goreng Jawa ($6.90). I like the fact that the stir fried noodles is the wet kind, flavourful and with hints of wok hei aroma.

IMG_5715ed
Ayam Penyet 4.5/5

Probably a Singaporean favourite is the Ayam Penyet ($6.90) that is served with freshly made sambal. The ayam penyet is another dish I would order. The chicken is cooked to a nice exterior crisp while retaining the tenderness inside.

IMG_5709ed
Rice

Over at Pondok Jawa Timur, customers have a choice of 3 different types of rice. Namely the normal white rice, pandan rice and yellow rice.

IMG_5716ed
Fish Head Curry 3.8/5

I did not really enjoy the Fish Head Curry ($32.9) during my previous visit as I thought it was too watery. However, the fish head curry was more palatable this time round. According to the owner instead of using coconut milk, they used fresh milk to cook their curry. The gravy will go well with a plate of rice or even bread.

IMG_5721ed
Es Teler 3.5/5

Wrapping up the dinner, I have the Es Teler ($4.50) which is a sweet dessert of fresh fruits, shaved ice and condensed milk. I was introduced to the dessert during a Jakarta trip and this has become my favourite Indonesia dessert. I simply love the taste of condensed milk with the shaved ice. However I think the presentation could be better and the shaved ice can be finer. It was a bit coarse on the palate.

After moving from Selegie to the new location at North Bridge Road, Pondok Jawa Timur exactly dropped their prices. I was actually quite surprise but it is a great news to the customers. On top of that, there is no service and GST. With the type of pricing and good food, it is definitely a wallet friendly place for a meal.
