Uptown Malaysia Nasi Lemak @ Telok Ayer Street - Popular Ayam Goreng Berempah In CBD With Long Queue

UptownNasiLemak6

Malaysian style Nasi Lemak, better known as Ayam Goreng Berempah, whereby you get a whole spiced marinated chicken leg, has recently been popular in Singapore. As a result, many places have started selling the dish on their menu, from hawker stalls to restaurants. Uptown Nasi Lemak in the CBD is one such place that attracts long queues. Their nasi lemak, founded by two Malaysian childhood buddies, is inspired by the best Malaysian nasi lemak from Damansara Uptown, Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia.

Ayam Goreng Berempah 4/5

The Nasi Lemak with Ayam Goreng Berempah is $8.20. It comes with a whole chicken leg, achar, half a boiled egg, sambal chilli, ikan bilis and peanuts. It is quite a steal to get a meal below ten dollars in the CBD. Furthermore, the portion is generous too.

UptownNasiLemak9

The whole chicken leg is coated in a crispy layer of spice-marinated skin. However, the soy sauce is a tad too much overpowering the aromatics. The sambal chilli sauce was shiok, better than Dickson Nasi Lemak. The other condiments were a disappointment. The achar lacked the refreshing crunch, while the ikan bilis were not crispy. As for the rice, the texture is firmer, with a hint of coconut milk flavour but not as fragrant as Dickson Nasi Lemak.

Besides the Ayam Goreng Berempah, the stall sells other items such as Beed Rendang, Sambal Sotong, Curry Kapitam Chicken, Sambal Petai Prawn and Sambal Fish. All are priced below ten dollars.

Bara Food @ Altez / Icon Village - True Indonesian Flavours With Nasi Bakar, Indonesian Special Grilled Rice

BaraFood8

Bara Food is a Halal Indonesian restaurant located inside Altez at Tanjong Pagar, serving Nasi Bakar, Indonesian special grilled rice. The restaurant offers a number of set menus with the nasi bakar as well as side dishes complete the meal.

BaraFood14
Ayam Goreng Serundeng 4.2/5

The first set we had is the Ayam Goreng Serundeng, which comes with a whole Javanese-style fried chicken leg topped with serundeng, mixed fried Indonesian herbs and spices. The sides include tempeh and fried tofu. All these are accompanied by rich and aromatic rice wrapped in banana leaves, grilled over fire.

BaraFood4
Ayam Goreng Cabe Ijo 4.2/5

If you like spicy food, I recommend trying the Ayam Goreng Cabe Ijo. The fried chicken topped with green chilli sauce is fragrant, spicy, and has a spicy punchy kick.

BaraFood6
Ayam Bakar Betutu 4.2/5

The Ayam Bakar Betutu will be a delicious option if you are not into spicy food. It comes with Balinese-style grilled chicken in sweet kecap manis paired with sambal matah (a mixture of different raw spices in special chilli oil), fried tofu, tempeh and nasi bakar.

BaraFood25
Kangkung Belacan 4/5

We ordered Kangkung Belacan cooked in shrimp paste sauce for a balanced diet. The rich shrimp paste flavour accentuated the enjoyment of the crunchy morning glory.

BaraFood31
Gado Gado 3/5

We also ordered the Gado Gado, an Indonesian mixed salad in peanut dressing.t I am not a fan of it. I find it weird to have cold vegetables in peanut dressing.

BaraFood18
Bergedel 4.5/5 and Corn Fritter 3.8/5

I would recommend the snacks at Bara Food too. The Bergedel was so good. It is probably one of the best I have eaten. As for the Corn Fritter, It lacked the crispiness I was expecting.

I visited the place during the weekend for lunch, which is packed. Fortunately, I made a reservation. Hence if you plan to check out the place, avoid the peak hours or make a reservation.

Wild Coco @ McNair Road - A Delicious Plate Of Nasi Lemak As Good As Dickson Nasi Lemak

WildCoco2

Are you missing Dickson Nasi Lemak after it temporarily closed its shop upon Malaysia's live chicken export ban to Singapore? If you are, I have a piece of good news. I have discovered Wild Coco at McNair Road, which sells an excellent plate of Ayam Goreng Berempah that is comparable to Dickson Nasi Lemak. Furthermore, you can dine-in at Wild Coco, unlike Dickson Nasi Lemak, which only could takeaway.

WildCoco11
Ayam Goreng Berempah 4.5/5

We had the Ayam Goreng Berempah ($9.80), which comes with a whole spiced chicken leg, fried egg, ikan bilis, peanuts and sambal chilli. The deep-fried whole chicken leg is crispy on the exterior and well-flavoured by the beautiful aroma of the various spices. On the other hand, the meat is tender and juicy. It is comparable to Dickson Nasi Lemak.

WildCoco3

As for the rice, Wild Coco's version is more subtle, while Dickson Nasi Lemak's version is robust and rich. The sambal chilli is also better at Dickson Nasi Lemak, which is spicier and more fragrant.

WildCoco6

However, Wild Coco fares better in other areas. First, their Ayam Goreng Berempah comes with a fried egg instead of a hard-boiled egg at Dickson Nasi Lemak. Second, you can dine-in at Wild Coco, meaning you can have your food fresh out of the kitchen while Dickson Nasi Lemak can only takeaway.

WildCocoFront-2

After comparing the Ayam Goreng Berempah at both Wild Coco and Dickson Nasi Lemak, I find both have pros and cons. However, Wild Coco has a slight edge because you can dine in, and there are more varieties such as Fried Sambal Fish Nasi Lemak and other side dishes.

Makko Teck Neo @ Telok Blangah Rise - Hidden Peranakan Gem In A Quiet Neighbourhood

MakkoTeckNeo10

Not known to many, hidden in the quiet neighbourhood of Telok Blangah Rise is Makko Teck Neo, a Nyonya restaurant specialising in traditional Peranakan cuisines and kueh kuehs. It all started with Auntie Teck Neo baking and selling its signature pineapple tarts and cookies every Chinese New Year to relatives and friends. As the business grew, Auntie Teck Neo moved into the current restaurant in 2008 and started Makko Tech Neo.

MakkoTeckNeo9
Nyonya Kueh Pie Tee 4/5

MakkoTeckNeo1
Ngoh Hiang 4.5/5

Our lunch started with some light bites. We have the Nyonya Kueh Pie Tee ($9.90) and Ngoh Hiang ($11.90). The Nyonya Kueh Pie Tee filled with flavourful turnip stew, topped with a thinly sliced prawn is must enjoy with a dollop of the chilli sauce. The Ngoh Hiang ($11.90) is quite unique with the addition of chives and carrot for a delightful crunch on top of deep-fried crispy beancurd skin. I am not sure whether this is authentic Nyonya ngoh hiang recipe, but it sure is good.

MakkoTeckNeo8
Tauhu Goreng 4/5

Next, we had is the Tauhu Goreng ($6.80). The deep-fried tofu is piled with shredded cucumber, beansprout and lots of the nutty peanut sauce. Each mouthful comes with an abundance of textures at play.

MakkoTeckNeo4
Rempah Ayam Goreng 4.2/5

MakkoTeckNeo3
Chap Chye 4/5

For a chance, we decided not to order the Ayam Buah Keluah but gone for the Rempah Ayam Goreng ($11.90) instead. The tender grilled chicken thigh has a beautiful rempah rub that elevated the taste profile. Not to forget the chilli sauce for that shiok finishing.

MakkoTeckNeo6
Pork Rib Pongteh 3.8/5

MakkoTeckNeo12
Beef Rendang 4.2/5

For the daily special on Sunday, we went for the Pork Rib Pongteh ($12.90) and Beef Rendang ($14.90). The Pork Rib Pongeh while cooked to tender and infused with the robust fermented beancurd flavour, it lacked finishing tang which I was seeking. The Beef Rendang, on the other hand, left an impression with the lunch group. It is fork-tender and spicy, packing a punch. Best to order a plate of plain basmati rice to go with the shiok gravy.

MakkoTeckNeo7
Dry Mee Siam 4.2/5

A house special at Makko Teck Neo is the Dry Mee Siam ($5.80). It comes with big puffy tau pok that is soaked with the mee siam gravy. While it is dry mee siam, it is not dry at all. It comes with a scoop of rich, sweet and tangy gravy. Best to give it a good toss to coat each strand of the vermicelli, to enjoy the slurping goodness. I personally crave for more of the mee siam gravy.

Makko Teck Neo is definitely a hidden gem located in a sleepy old neighbourhood. I am great to discover yet another good Nyonya restaurant, especially that it is near my place.
