Photo 4-11-23, 2 21 07 PM

Founded by Old Chang Kee, Curry Times restaurant is a new dine-in concept specializing in curry dishes. Set in a nostalgic setting reminiscent of the glorious days of Mama's home-cooked food, Curry Times aims to bring back flavours and dishes from the past to be enjoyed once again. With multiple outlets island-wide, we visited the Curry Times Restaurant outlet at Westgate. The restaurant provides a casual and welcoming atmosphere for patrons to enjoy a wide range of dishes, including Hainanese Chicken Rice and Nasi Lemak, alongside various curry-based options.

Chicken Cutlet Curry Pao Fan 4.2/5

Curry Times is introducing an exciting new creation: the Chicken Cutlet Curry Pao Fan. This creation combines a generous serving of pao fan, a comforting rice porridge, and a crispy chicken cutlet placed on top. The dish is further enhanced with fragrant and creamy curry sauce, creating a harmonious blend of flavours and textures. For enthusiasts of both curry and pao fan, this inventive creation promises a must-try experience, allowing you to enjoy the best of both culinary worlds in a single, satisfying bowl. This set also comes with a free Barley drink at $10.90++.

Nasi Lemak with Chicken Super Drum 4/5

Apart from their new dish, we also tried the popular Nasi Lemak with Chicken Super Drum ($10.90). The Nasi lemak is a traditional Malaysian and Singaporean dish known for its fragrant coconut rice, and it is typically accompanied by various condiments such as sambal (spicy chilli paste), peanuts, fried anchovies, cucumber, and a hard-boiled or fried egg. In this variation, the dish is elevated with a huge chicken drumstick, adding a substantial and flavourful element to the classic nasi lemak.

Photo 4-11-23, 2 10 59 PM
Curry Chap Chye 4/5

The Curry Chap Chye is a flavourful and aromatic dish that combines the essence of two classic Asian dishes: curry and chap chye. This dish typically features a rich and savoury curry sauce infused with a blend of aromatic spices. The curry is then generously loaded with a variety of fresh vegetables and ingredients, such as tofu, beancurd skin, and assorted vegetables like cabbage, carrots, and mushrooms. The result is a hearty and wholesome curry that serves as a perfect complement to your steamed white rice or Nasi Lemak rice.

Crispy Chicken Wing (3pc) 3.8/5

The Crispy Chicken Wing dish ($6.50) at Curry Times is a mouthwatering treat. We ordered them as a snack, which features a perfectly fried and crispy exterior while being tender and juicy on the inside. The wings paired well with the sweet chilli sauce provided on the side.

Oriole Coffee + Bar @ Pan Pacific Serviced Suites Orchard - A Cafe by Day, A Bar by Dusk, All In the Heart of Bustling Town

IMG_2698

Since its establishment in 2008, Oriole Coffee + Bar in Somerset has been serving diners with their freshly brewed speciality coffee and cafe classics in the day. It transforms into a bar in the evening, with a diverse selection of house-pour wines, beers, interesting cocktails, and hearty dishes - all the good ingredients for a place to unwind and relax for the night.

IMG_2597

From 21 August to 31 October 2023, Oriole is introducing their "Oriole's Summer Specials", showcasing a number of new menu offerings and refreshing cocktails that were concocted in collaboration with Tanqueray. Some of these dishes include the Veggie Puttanesca Pizza, Acqua Pazza Barramundi and Donut Balls.

IMG_2600

The cafe has both indoor and outdoor seats, each providing its unique vibe.

IMG_2696
Truffle Fries 4.2/5

Before taking our seats, we spotted Truffle Fries ($15) on almost every other table. While this starter was slightly pricey, we thoroughly enjoyed the fries' consistent crunch and fluffy interior.

IMG_2697
Shrimp-paste Marinated Chicken Wings with Bali Rub 4.5/5

These Shrimp-paste Marinated Chicken Wings ($16) left a huge impression! Following the recommendation of our friendly waitress, we opted for our wings with an additional Bali Rub (+$1.90). The piping hot wings arrived coated in a slick, sweet sauce. The crunch was on point, and the meat remained wonderfully juicy. If you're feeling adventurous, consider adding the Butter Sriracha (+$1.90) for a unique twist.

IMG_2699
Veggie Puttanesca Pizza 3.8/5

Our first main was the Veggie Puttanesca Pizza ($22), featuring an all-vegetable assortment of toppings on a base decked with puttanesca sauce. It includes Kalamata olives, capsicum, Roma tomatoes, button mushrooms, yellow onions and arugula. The base leans a little more dry and biscuity.

IMG_2700
Acqua Pazza Barramundi 4/5

Our next main dish was the Acqua Pazza Barramundi ($28), which highlighted the freshness of the protein. It was marinated with extra virgin olive oil and thyme before being poached in a tomato-based sauce.

IMG_2701
Donut Balls 3.8/5

Oriole's house-made Donut Balls ($15) are freshly fried upon order and come accompanied by a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was decorated with crumbles and blueberries and served with sweet blueberries and date compote. However, despite the decently satisfying crunch on the outside, the centre was too doughy for our liking.

IMG_2695
Mango Berry Sunset

From the special cocktail menu curated in collaboration with Tanqueray, we sampled the refreshing Mango Berry Sunset ($20). It was a very bright concoction, both visually and in taste, with its mix of Tanqueray London Dry, Raspberry Puree, Lemon Juice and Mango.

Do make a reservation before visiting. You can do so easily at https://www.oriole.com.sg/reservations.

No Burn No Taste (NBNT) Private Dining By Chef Sam Chablani

NoBurnNoTaste-39

No Burn No Taste by Chef Sam Chablani is one of the most sought-after private dining destinations. Unfortunately, getting a booking at No Burn No Taste (NBNT) is not easy. The last I checked, the waitlist was already full for 2023/2024. I have followed Sam's cooking philosophy of marrying fire-driven barbecue with a distinctly Asian perspective, combining premium produce with traditional, time-honoured techniques since his days at the now-defunct Fat Lulu.

NoBurnNoTaste-35
Steamed Clams

Our dinner started with sweet Steamed Clams in an umami cream. I love the accompanying burnt garlic toast that is not only delicious but also allows me to soak up the delicious broth.

NoBurnNoTaste-20
Tomatoes and Burrata

Not everything on the menu is barbecue items such as the light and refreshing Tomatos and Burrata Salad helps freshen the palate and whet the appetite.

NoBurnNoTaste-26
Burnt Wings, Spicy Iberico Pork Satay

How can we not have chicken wings and satay when having a barbecue? It is torture to be seated just before the barbecue pit while the Burnt Wings and Spicy Iberico Pork Satay got kissed by the charcoal's heat.

NoBurnNoTaste-34
"Porn" Corn

Corn may be a common ingredient, but I remembered how Chef Sam had transformed it into a delicacy at Fat Fuku. The "Porn" Corn grilled to a nice charred on its external was extremely sweet.

NoBurnNoTaste-14
Charred Wagyu Skirt Steak MBS9

Moving to the mains, we had the Charred Wagyu Skirt MBS9 paired with Burnt Potatoes. Perfectly grilled to medium with beautiful pink tenderness and crispy charred edges, showcasing the intense marbling and rich beefy flavour.

NoBurnNoTaste-12

NoBurnNoTaste-09
Lychee-smoked Umami Crab, Lemon Garlic Butter

Besides the grilled chicken wings, pork satay and wagyu, our dinner includes seafood. The crowd's favourite for the night goes to the Crab, smoked with lychee wood paired with lemon garlic butter. The grilling and smoking enhanced the natural sweetness and brininess of the crustaceans while adding a hint of charred savoury notes.

NoBurnNoTaste-03
Spencer Gulf King Prawns

As delicious as the crab was the Spencer Gulf King Prawns in an intoxicating burnt sambal cream sauce, topped with coriander. I was screaming for some toasted bread to dredge them in that splendour sauce.

We paid $185 per person for the 10-course Umami BBQ Omakase. It is one of the more expensive private dining I have visited. However, it differs from your usual barbecue as every dish is thoughtfully executed to elevate the appreciation of the premium ingredients as good as any restaurant's standard.

Kubo Woodfired Kitchen @ The Pier at Robertson - Contemporary Restaurant Offering Woodfired Filipino cuisine

Kubo38

KuboInterior-2

Drawing inspiration from Filipino cuisine, Kubo Woodfired Kitchen at The Pier at Robertson is a contemporary restaurant that redefines familiar and little-known dishes from the northern to the southern regions of the Philippines. Named after the thatched huts commonly seen in the Philippine countryside, diners get to witness and enjoy the full view of Kubo's custom-designed and built open kitchen with a wood-burning oven, cookstove, grill and smoker. Helmed by Chef Kurt Sombero, Chef Kurt welds his Filipino heritage and culinary techniques to create a menu that aims to make Filipino cuisine more accessible.

Kubo14
Cassava Chips with Miso Dip 3.5/5

Kubo11
Honeycomb Tripe 3.8/5

Kubo2
Inasal Mid-Wing 4/5

We started with some Snacks - Cassava Chips with Miso Dip, Honeycomb Tripe and Inasal Mid-Wing ($12). The first two are all about the crunch and creamy dips. Served with savoury hummus, the honeycomb tripe subverts our expectations of a typical tripe dish. Its crunch factor is unbeatable. My favourite is the Inasal Mid-Wing. Tender meat laced with a layer of smokiness from the wood fire, such simplicity embodies the beauty of woodfire cooking.

Kubo21
Grilled Prawns 3.8/5

Next up were dishes from Appertiser, among which Grilled Prawns ($24) have received much-raved reviews since the restaurant opened last year. Served with a punchy coconut sambal, bird's eye chilli and kaffir lime, the prawn boasted a mouthwatering meaty and creamy texture.

Kubo39
Pork Longganissa 3.8/5

Pork Longganissa is new to the menu, a refined version of an all-day Filipino breakfast classic with flavours reminiscent of chorizo. In Kubo, Pork Longganissa is made as a hamonado (pineapple sauce) naked-pork patty marinated in soy before topping with ikura and cured egg and served with toasted bread underneath. Unfortunately, while I appreciate the thoughts that went behind this dish, its saltiness is a bit overwhelming.

Kubo26
Sisig 4.2/5

Sisig ($25) was a memorable dish. Originally served with rice, it is served taco style with flat bread here. There is so much to love about the rustic taste of the soft and fluffy flat bread done over the woodfire. The sizzling minced pork mixture naturally had bits of crunch from some charred bits, making it even more morbid.

Kubo42
Smoked Beef Tongue 4/5

Smoked Beef Tongue may look intimidating, but it tastes similar to beef brisket. It is also one of the highly recommended dishes at Kubo. Its tenderness with nicely seared exterior makes it a rare treat.

Kubo45
House Aged Duck 4.5/5

Kubo49
Turmeric Banana Leaf Rice 4/5

For mains, we had the restaurant's Signature House Aged Duck ($42) served fried and grilled, together with a new side Turmeric Banana Leaf Rice. The fried duck leg is very similar to a Duck confit, beautifully brown with fork-tender meat. The grilled portion had a much firmer texture and showcased an impressive layer of crispy golden-brown skin laced with a yummy layer of fats underneath. The accompanying sauce could do with some zest or acidity to cut the richness of this dish. The fluffy rice was homely and comforting and complemented the meat well.

Kubo59
Halo Halo 4/5

Kubo63
Leche Flan Bon Bon 3/5

For desserts, we had Halo Halo, which features the Philippines' very own Ube Sorbets (ice cream), alongside creamy coconut and torched meringue. While I enjoyed the textural play lent by the various toppings, its sweetness was too much for me. Leche Flan Bon Bon had an interesting smoked blueberry, but the flan seemed lost amongst the ingredients.

Kubo17

Kubo19

There are a couple of non-alcoholic drinks to try, such as Samalamig (coolers) like the Mango Float ($10) done in the Kubo way with roasted biscuits, mangos, smoked coconut cream and topped with a torched meringue and mango creme. Otherwise, Smoked Black Tea with Pandan Foam is an interesting option that taste akin to our local grass jelly drink.

Words by Si An. A girl who is allured by travelling, loves the feel of freedom, smell of the rain and the aroma of fine coffee and food. Note: This is an invited tasting.
