SOD Cafe @ Upper Thomson Road - Launches New Night Concept With A Focus On Freshly Made Pasta

Photo 8-4-23, 5 44 16 PM

Photo 8-4-23, 5 41 16 PM

Nestled within the Upper Thomson vicinity, SOD Cafe has launched a new night concept focusing on freshly made pasta. There are a total of 7 pasta dishes to choose from, with the bases all made with either linguine or fettuccine. They make their pasta from scratch daily, with portions only limited to 30 per night for now, though they have hoped to increase the daily portions to 50 in the near future!

Photo 8-4-23, 5 35 37 PM
Taro Milk Tea 4/5, Green Milk Tea 4/5

We started off the meal with their signature bubble tea drinks, such as the Taro Milk Tea and Green Milk Tea with pearls. The drinks were aromatic, creamy and not too sweet, while the black pearls were soft and chewy, providing a great bite to the drinks.

Photo 8-4-23, 5 43 05 PM
Aglio Olio with Prawns 4.2/5

We opted for their Aglio Olio with Prawns, cooked with fragrant butter garlic and topped with ebiko, and tiger prawns cooked to plump juicy perfection. The addition of ebiko added a nice bite, and the fettuccine pasta was cooked to a nice al dente texture.

Photo 8-4-23, 5 37 55 PM
Cream Mushroom 4/5

The Cream Mushroom comprises button mushrooms cooked in mixed herbs and cream. It is perfect for pasta lovers who love creamy pasta, and the shrooms' aroma was strong without being too overwhelming. The fettuccine pasta was similarly cooked to a nice al dente texture.

Photo 8-4-23, 5 44 45 PM
Beef Stew 4.2/5

The Beef Stew comes with tender 8-hour cooked beef shank cubes and cream demi-glaze. The perfectly done fettuccine was smothered in a robust beef gravy, not too heavy yet sufficiently flavourful. Other pasta options are available such as the Spicy Tomato with Wagyu Beef Balls and Salmon Pesto.

Photo 8-4-23, 5 36 02 PM
Sweet Potato Fries 3.8/5

We also tried their sides, such as the Sweet Potato Fries, which are fluffy and retain a thin layer of crispiness around them.

Unilever Buffet Restaurant @ Halcyon 2 - Seafood BBQ Buffet In Jalan Pemimpin

IMG_5635

Unilever Buffet opened its doors starting mid-January 2023, offering diners a seafood and BBQ buffet in Jalan Pemimpin. It is $53.90 per adult, while children between 5 to 12 years old are at $23.90 per pax on weekdays and $27.90 per pax on weekends. They are running a 50% promo from now till April 2023, with more details on their Facebook page.

Fresh Food Section

There are oysters, salmon sashimi, chirashi, prawns, mussels and scallops in the fresh food section, while the snow crab legs are provided in limited portions per pax. Though we appreciated the creaminess of the oysters, the freshness among the rest of the other items could have been better.

IMG_5634
BBQ Section

BBQ is the highlight of the buffet here. They use smoke-free automatic grillers, which helps to reduce the possibility of lingering BBQ smells on your belongings after the meal.

IMG_5636

The selection includes fish, pork, chicken and beef, all available in 10 types of marination. The marinations are black pepper, Thai, German, sambal, Japanese, Korean, lemongrass, garlic, mala, and kimchi. A range of condiment dips is also available to pair with the eats. Unfortunately, we did find some of the marinations too salty, while the flavours we preferred more were the black pepper and German style.

Cooked Food Section

For cooked food during our time of visit, there was a spread of 6 dishes - chilli crabs, sweet and sour fish, pork trotters, fried rice, fried noodles and vegetables with mushrooms. They were generous with the chilli crabs, but the overall quality of the spread could be improved.

Free Flow Bubble Tea

Lastly, for beverages, there is free flow bubble tea, alongside calamansi, blueberry and orange juices, while desserts were a mixture of bakes, such as eclair, cream puffs and swiss rolls.

Nummun Thai Kitchen @ Upper Thomson Road - Don't Miss Ordering The Crab Meat Omelette

NummunExterior-2

I have been wanting to visit Nummun Thai Kitchen at Upper Thomson Road after hearing numerous good reviews of the Thai restaurant. I finally got my chance to check out the place recently with a friend. Mainly because of the Thomson East MRT line opening, it is much more accessible to get there now.

NummunThaiKitchen10
Thai Prawn Cake 4/5

We started our dinner with the Thai Prawn Cake ($9). It is a delightful starter with crispy exterior to munch on while waiting for the rest of the dishes to be served. It is paired with a sweet dipping sauce.

NummunThaiKitchen13
Pad Thai 4/5

For the carbo item, we decide to go for the Pad Thai ($8). Unlike most places, I find the version here is less sweet, and the noodles are not as chewy, which is what I prefer. Give the rice noodles a squeeze of the lime and a sprinkle of the chilli flakes to elevate the whole enjoyment.

NummunThaiKitchen3
Stir Fried Kai Lan with Roasted Pork 4/5

For the vegetable dish, I ordered the Stir Fried Kai Lan with Roasted Pork ($12). I always enjoyed the addition of roasted pork to the stir-fried vegetable. I find that it will enhance the flavour. Furthermore, it is like having two dishes in one. Maybe that is the greedy me at play.

NummunThaiKitchen19
Crab Meat Omelette 4.2/5

Many customers come for the Crab Meat Omelette ($28). The Thai dish that got famous after Jay Fai Bangkok got a Michelin Star brought the dish onto the world map. I have not tried Jay Fai, so I can't compare the difference. I only can say I enjoyed the crab meat omelette here. It was fluffy with generous servicing of crab meat in it. It is also not as oily as some that I have eaten.

Making a reservation before going down is advisable as the restaurant can get pretty crowded.

SOD Cafe @ Upper Thomson Road - Opens Second Outlet At Upper Thomson With Bubble Tea And All-Day Cafe Brunch

SODCafe1

After their first outlet within Ci Yuan Community Centre in Hougang, SOD cafe has recently launched their second outlet in the bustling enclave of Upper Thomson. Besides being more accessible, the new space has experienced a new facelift with chic design and vibrant settings. Their menu has also expanded to include more outlet-exclusive items.

SODCafe4
Taro Milk Tea 4/5, Tan Milk Tea 4/5

Having started as a bubble tea shop originally, you can expect the same boba tea options at SOD Cafe's second outlet here. Their Taro Milk Tea ($4.70) has a pleasant taro fragrance, while the Tan Milk Tea ($4.70) has a subtle charcoal oolong flavour to the smooth milk tea base. We added black pearls as well, and they were sufficiently soft and chewy, providing a great bite to the drinks.

SODCafe10
Sourdough Big Breakfast 4/5

SOD offers an all-day brunch with a selection of breakfast essentials. We went with the Sourdough Big Breakfast ($15.90), which comes in a satisfying platter of scrambled eggs, ham, sausages, bacon, baked beans, garden greens, and crispy sourdough bread.

SODCafe12
Waffles with Scrambled Eggs & Candied Bacon 3.5/5

The Waffles with Scrambled Eggs & Candied Bacon ($12.90) features perfectly cooked soft scrambled eggs and crispy bacon. However, we felt that the waffles were done overly brittle and a tad too dry, lacking the expected fluffiness.

SODCafe8
French Toast with Salted Caramel Bananas 3.8/5

The French Toast with Salted Caramel Bananas ($12.90) is a pleasant salty-sweet combination of soft and fluffy brioche toast slices. However, we wished there would be some maple syrup provided, as the caramel sauce was on a slightly excessive side.

SODCafe6
Sweet Potato Fries 4/5

The Sweet Potato Fries ($7.90) comes in a generous portion of well-done sweet potato strips, mostly fluffy and retains a thin layer of crispiness around it.

Lai Heng Fried Kuay Teow & Cooked Food @ Shunfu Mart Food Centre - For $3 This Is A Gorgeous Plate Of Goodness

IMG_6432

I have not eaten a plate of Fried Kway Teow for a long time. Partly it is hard to find a good one nowadays and of course for health reason I do not want to waste my calories for a lousy plate of fried kway teow. I broke my fast for char kway teow when I dropped by Lai Heng Fried Kuay Teow & Cooked Food at Shunfu Mart Food Centre. I could not help queuing and getting a plate of fried kway teow.

IMG_6434

Besides selling Char Kway Teow, the stall also sells Otah. It is an interesting pairing and probably the only stall in Singapore doing so. I observed many customers bought the otah to go along with the char kway teow. As for me, I decided to give it a miss as I wanted to try other stuff in the food centre.

IMG_6435
Char Kway Teow 4.2/5

The Char Kway Teow ($3) is the wet and slippery type. For the pricing, the portion is quite generous. Though it was lacking the wok-hei fragrant, I like that it is not too sweet and well balanced. In the delicious plate of char kway teow, one can find lup cheong, egg, bean sprout, cockles and fish cake.

IMG_6436

Besides the sweet sauce, what I think that makes the plate of noodle tasted even more delicious is the lup cheong, cockles and egg. The ingredients seem to perk up the whole flavour profile, making the moist noodles even more slurping good. One word, shiok!

IMG_6438

It seems like there is another Lai Heng stall at Sembawang Hill Food Centre. I am not sure whether they are related but I suspect they do as it is offering the same pairing of char kway teow and otah like the stall at Shunfu Mart Food Centre.

Rong Cheng Bak Kut Teh 榕城(新民路)肉骨茶 @ Midview City (Sin Ming Road) - Introducing The New Sea Cucumber Pork Rib Soup

RongChengBKT14

It has been a while since I last visited Rong Cheng Bak Kut Teh at Midview City. I remembered the last visit was to bring my Thai friends to have their bak kut teh. I am back again to try their newly introduced Sea Cucumber Pork Rib Soup.

RongChengBKT13
Sea Cucumber Pork Rib Soup 3.5/5

We ordered the Sea Cucumber Pork Rib Soup Set ($18) which comes with a choice of a small side dish and rice. Sea cucumber is known for being rich in collagen and no cholestrol. This is probably the first bak kut teh restaurant to introduce sea cucumber into their soup. just like how they first introduced the dragon ribs to Singapore. While I enjoyed the bouncy texture of the sea cucumber, I felt that it needed more time to absorb the essence of the pork rib soup.

RongChengBKT2
Dragon Ribs Set 4/5

Besides their Sea Cucumber Pork Rib Soup, we also ordered their signature Dragon Ribs Set ($10.50) which comes with a choice of a small side dish and rice. Not sure whether we were early during our visit but the pork rib soup does not quite hit the spot for me. It was not as peppery as I have used to know.

RongChengBKT7
Mee Sua Soup with Pig liver and Kidney 4.2/5

Lastly I had a bowl of Mee Sua Soup with Pig Liver and Kidney ($6). This is a comforting bowl of silky noodle in a light and hearty soup. Enjoyed how the innards still retained a crunchy bite, not being overcooked.

Pagi Sore Indonesian Restaurant @ Tagore Lane (Upper Thomson Road)

IMG_0073ed

Pagi Sore Indonesian Restaurant is an household name servicing authentic Indonesian cuisine since 1989. Established by Ms Liyana Kwan in 1989 as an Nasi Padang concept eating house, it has expanded over the years into an la carte restaurant using a fusion of Chinese cooking techniques with authentic Indonesian flavours. Fans of Pagi Sore will rejoice to know that they have recently opened a third outlet at Tagore Lane, inside an industrial estate, located in the roof top of Entrepreneur Centre, an industrial building.

IMG_0053ed

IMG_0055ed

The first unique thing I noticed at Pagi Sore is the rice. Most Indonesian restaurant will go around servicing rice in a basket but at Pagi Sore it is served wrapped in banana leaf.. Not only containing the warm of the rice but also give it a nice aroma.

IMG_0056ed
Stir Fried Long Beans with Belacan Chilli 4/5

To go with the rice, we order a couple of dishes from the a la carte menu starting with the Stir Fried Long Beans with Belacan Chilli ($8.80/$9.90). Cooked to a nice crunchy bite plus the heat from the belacan, this is a spicy kick start to the dinner in a good way.

IMG_0070ed
Tahu Telor 3.5/5

A towering Tahu Telor ($10.20) topped with shredded carrots greeted us next. The crispy and fluffy fried beancurd and eggs when eaten with the nutty sweet sauce, whetted up the appetite.

IMG_0066ed
Ayam Bali 4/5

Smokey, sweet and tender is the Ayam Bali ($5.80/$14.80). Grilled to a nice charred edge with sweetness from the kecap manis, this is quite addictive to just stop at one.

IMG_0063ed
Wok Fried Butter Prawn with Spices 4/5

The aroma from the butter and spices filled the air when the Wok Fried Butter Prawn with Spices ($23.50) was brought to the table. It was so good that you can eat the whole thing together with the shells.

IMG_0058ed
Ikan Otah Kukus 4.2/5

One of the must try dish at Pagi Sore has to be the Ikan Otah Kukus. This is so special and unique. A whole leather jacket fish is steamed in sweet potato leaf with a new blend of spicy paste and coconut milk. What is even more interesting is that the fish is boneless!

IMG_0079ed

To be frank, never would I expect to find a restaurant in the roof top of an industrial building. It is sort of a hidden gem. The place is spacious and windy, especially at night. There is also ample parking lots. Although the address is Tagore Lane, I would recommend going via Tagore Road which is nearer.

Oz Specialty Coffee @ Thomson V Two (Upper Thomson)

IMG_2949ed

Having been checking out the cafe scene in Thomson area, my cafe hopping has brought me to One Man Coffee, November 8, Yahava KoffeeWorks and today we are going to drop by Oz Specialty Coffee at Sin Ming Road just off Upper Thomson Road.

IMG_2947ed

I have heard that Oz Specality Coffee served a pretty awesome cup of coffee so I made my way on one weekday to check out the place. During my visit, the cafe was serving two types of coffee beans, common man coffee roaster or pacamara house blend.

IMG_2944ed
Caffe Latte 4.2/5

After much consideration and the patient barista for explaining the different characteristic of the coffee beans, I decided to go for the Common Man Coffee Roaster beans for my cup of Caffe Latte ($4.50/$5.50)When the barista told me that the pacamara house blend is on the acidity side, it was quite an easy choice for me as I don't like coffee that is acidic. I am glad with my choice as the coffee has a nice buttery and nutty taste.

IMG_2945ed
Caffe Latte 4.2/5

The cafe is pretty small with about 5 indoor wall facing seats with about 5 to 6 outdoors tables along the corridor. Although there is a staircase in the cafe leading to the second level, it is used as storage place. Even thought it is small, it is a cozy little place with good coffee. I have read that their food items are pretty good too. I did not try them during my visit as I had another appointment after that. I was just stopping by to try their coffee. Oz Specialty Coffee also provides free Wifi too.
