The Three Peacocks @ Labrador Park - Live Seafood & Meat Charcoal BBQ Buffet In An Al-Fresco Setting

Nestled within a slightly out-of-the-way location near Labrador Park is The Three Peacocks, a spacious outdoor dining destination that provides a wide range of meat and seafood for BBQ lovers.

We were awed by the wide selection of fresh seafood on ice available, from prawns, oysters, clams, squids, scallop, to crabs and crayfish. Each pax is also entitled to a complimentary serving of Boston Lobster. The staff grills them in huge batches on the charcoal grills.

Not to be missed is the central seafood and meat live station, which sprang to live with a variety of cooked food, such as the Peranakan seabass, cream cheese spinach baked scallops, mussels, Teriyaki Chicken, and Marinated Ribeye.

Each table is set up with a small charcoal grill, and we were first served with a cold seafood platter when we sat down. With the covid restrictions in place, diners can continue to place their orders via the online app with a QR code. The staff will serve the food to each table in ala carte buffet style.

Besides the seafood, we also picked from their extensive selection of marinated meat, such as the Pork Belly, Pork Collar, Wagyu Cubes, Thai Garlic Sukiyaki Chicken, and Chicken Satay. Others include sides such as the enoki mushrooms, cheese tofu and hotdogs. One of my favourites is the wagyu cubes. Cooked to a medium-rare and infused with a charcoal aroma, the meat is melt-in-the-mouth tender and so good on its own that it doesn't even need a dipping sauce.

From the cooked food menu, We had their fluffy deep-fried mantou with a sweet chilli crab sauce.

While we felt that the mentaiko salmon was a tad dry, the rich mentaiko flavours complemented the fish.

To fulfil your carbs intake, they have a few options available, including the Sambal fried rice, stir-fried hong kong style soba noodles, and white rice to go with your meats and seafood.

The seafood and meat buffet runs at $56 nett on weekdays and $61 nett on weekends for adults. It is priced at $55 for senior citizens and $34.10 for kids (from 7 to 12 years old). With the airy outdoor seatings, fairy lights, and vast array of seafood and meat options available, it is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and gather with your friends to relax and unwind over delicious BBQ food. They are only open for dinner. Even though we were there on a weekday evening, the restaurant is packed with diners. So do remember to make your reservation via their website before heading down to avoid the long queues.

Thai style salad takes on a new identity in this Thai-inspired Yu Sheng, in which the crowd pleasing shredded mango brightens up the dish, and the sweet-sour profile is further lifted by a sour plum & tamarind sauce.

Starting off with 2 appetisers - Steamed Sago Pork Dumplings and Fish Roe Marinated in Red Curry wrapped and grilled in a banana leaf. A trip to Phuket recently gotten me acquainted with Thai Pork Dumplings, and my first impression was that it is similar to our crystal dumpling. The skin was dense and chewy which I really like, and the sweet-savoury pork filling goes well with the skin too. The Fish Roe, as expected, is like our Otah. I'm just glad that it has more roe than paste.

Barramundi and Ginger Soup 3.8/5

The set menu comes with a soup - Barramundi and Ginger Soup. Almost like Tom Yum Goong but half the fieriness.

Five-spice Braised Pork Knuckle 4/5

The mains answer my cravings towards braised pork knuckle (khao kha moo) which I had in Bangkok. The Five-spice Braised Pork Knuckle is served with shiitake mushrooms, kalian & seaweed. The meat wasn't exactly fork-tender yet but the skin was to my satisfaction.

Tiger Prawns 2.5/5 and Egg Noodles 3.8/5

The Tiger Prawns with Salted Egg Yolk Sauce was quite disappointing. I was imaging huge prawns (with head intact) dressed in robust salted egg yolk sauce but it is lacklustre. Perhaps, this salted egg culture is really not embedded in the Thais' palate yet.  The Stir-fry Thai-style Egg Noodles with assorted vegetables is quite well done, which tasted as cosy as a plate of homecooked mee sua.

Desserts 3/5

Rounding off your evening is the Glutinous Rice Balls stuffed with sesame and honeydew sago with vanilla ice cream. Never mind the tough rice balls, for its superb counterpart makes up for it. The sago jelly was firm and stretchy, and the simple dressing over of the ever senses-appeasing coconut cream made this bowl a taste of bliss.

Creamier @ Gillman Barracks - Honestly Good Handmade Ice Cream and Coffee

If you have not known, the popular Creamier at Toa Payph has opened a second outlet at Gillman Barracks. The new outlet is more spacious and has a bigger floor area compared to their flagship outlet. It has both air conditioned and alfresco sitting area.

Ice Matcha Latte and Ice White 4/5

It was a rather hot and humid afternoon when we visited the new outlet. To cool ourselves from the afternoon heat, we ordered the Ice Matcha Latte ($5.50) and Ice White ($6). The perfect drinks to cool ourselves from the heat.

Waffle with Ice Cream 4.5/5

A must try at Creamier is their Waffle with Ice Cream ($8,80). Creamier is known for their ice cream so we ordered an addition scoop for $2.80 (add $0.90 for premium). The ice cream is creamy and smooth with beautiful flavours. The waffle was also crispy on the exterior and fluffy inside. Definitely one of the best waffle I have eaten.

I have tried going to Creamier at Toa Payoh a few times but it is always very crowded. I have never gotten the chance to dine at the cafe in Toa Payoh. I am really glad that it has decided to open a second out which is nearer to where I stay and there are more seating space here.

Famous Depot 108 Claypot Laksa @ Depot Road

I remembered back in my army days, I used to frequent this claypot laksa place at 108 depot road which took up the whole coffeeshop. The coffeeshop was very run down but it is always crowded during lunch time. Since the estate undergone renovation, I have not been back until recently. The coffeeshop is gone and the block is rebuilt into a shopping centre with a food court on second level. Located inside the food court is Famous Depot 108 Claypot Laksa, selling the same claypot laksa. I am not sure whether it is related to the original

The laksa comes in a thick gravy served in a claypot. The Claypot Laksa ($3.50) is piping hot with tau pok, cockles, fish cakes and prawn. The claypot laksa is pretty good with its thick gravy, rich coconut and fragrant dried shrimps.

The thick and creamy gravy was rich and robust in flavours, coating the silky smooth noodles for a bowl of slurping goodness. The gravy is not as spicy as I would have like but you can always add more yourself. I do like the idea of the using the claypot as it keeps the noodle warm. However the cockles may get overcooked, so do remember to eat them quickly.

Overall Famous Depot 108 Claypot Laksa sells a good bowl of laksa that I finished it to the very last drop of the gravy. The price is also quite reasonable.

AS Seafood Soup (安盛海鲜汤) @ Depot Road

Many people may have heard of the famous Yan Ji Seafood Soup stall at Woodlands. However not many knows about this humble little stall, AS Seafood Soup (安盛海鲜汤) at Depot Road. It actually moved from Bedok to the current location. According to my brief conversation with the cook that was preparing the seafood soup, I am told that he learnt how to cook the seafood soup from a famous stall in Woodlands. I would suspect it is Yan Ji since the style is very similar.

Crayfish Seafood Soup 4.2/5

At AS Seafood Soup, they basically sells three type of soup. They are Crayfish Seafood Soup ($10/$12), Seafood Soup ($5.50/$7.50) and Promfret Seafood Soup ($10). We had the most expensive crayfish seafood soup at $12 since we have travelled all the way to try it. The soup is cooked with old hen, dried scallop and pork ribs for a good 4 hours to get the rich flavours.

Crayfish Seafood Soup 4.2/5

The luxurious bowl of seafood soup comes with crayfish, prawns, fish slices and chunks of minced pork. I have not tried Yan Ji before but accordingly to Maureen, the soup still falls short of the intensive she had at Yan Ji. Nevertheless, this is still a delicious bowl of seafood soup if are not willing to travel all the way to Woodlands.

Braised Pig Trotter 3/5

The stall also sells Braised Pig Trotter ($5/$7). The braising sauce was actually quite good. However the braised pork trotter was a bit tough and on the dry side.

Good news to the people staying in the East. As I draft this blog post, I am glad to tell you they are back in Bedok, with the opening of the 2nd outlet at block 412, Bedok North.

Onaka Restaurant & Wine Bar @ Alexandra Retail Centre (ARC)

Conceptualized in 2008, Onaka which means Optimum Nutrition And Kitchen Art is specializes in so called Creative Conscious Cuisine to educate the public to eat consciously and live mindfully. Onaka which uses only the most wholesome and selective organic ingredients, amalgamates Asian culinary cultures together with modern Western influences in order to produce uniquely healthy dishes.

Watermelon Sashimi 3/5

I have been wanting to come to Onaka to try the Watermelon Sashimi ($10). The sous vide watermelon rest on a bed of kombu and topped with agar wasabi tobiko is served with daikon tamari dip. I never knew that watermelon has such and interesting and unique texture that really felt as if one is have sashimi. The whole dish was light and refreshing.

Duck Confit 3.8/5

The Duck Confit ($33) is served on a pumpkin mash, orange segment and roasted mushroom with orange. The duck leg itself was rather huge and it a way a bit fatty. I have to leave the skin untouched due to the layer of fats underneath it. Nevertheless, the duck leg was really tender and succulent. I also applauded the use of orange and pumpkin to give a fruity and sweet balance to the whole dish.

Chilli Crab Capellini 4.2/5

There are many so called fusion chilli crab pasta dishes but usually they did not live up to their proclaim because of the lackluster chilli crab sauce that is not even close to the local dish. Using in house made chilli sauce, the Chilli Crab Capellini ($24) with real crab meat and a sous vide egg was really delicious. It has to be one of the closest interpretation of the local chilli crab sauce I have tried that goes well with the capellini.

Hock Lam Beef @ Alexandra Retail Centre (ARC)

The other day I decided to go to Alexandra Retail Centre (ARC) to check out the food establishments there since it was near to Labrador Park MRT station which I have yet to cover in my food journey. After recceing the mall, I decided to try Hock Lam Beef which took up a whole unit on the second floor of the mall. It has been a while since I last have beef noodles and I kind of missed it after it closed its Upper Serangoon outlet near my home. Hock Lam Beef needs not further mentioned as its already well known in Singapore for dishing out delectable bowls of beef noodles for over 100 years since 1911.

Kway Teow Soup Mixed 4/5

The new premises at ARC is quite big and with an extended menu servicing some common zichar items too. Ordering is quite simple, first decide the type of noodles (kway teow, yellow noodle or thick beehoon). Second decide whether you want the soup or dry version. Lastly, choice of  the 5 toppings (mixed beef, chunky & hand sliced beef, pure tendon, hand sliced beef, beef balls).

One of the most popular dish for over 100 years at Hock Lam Beef is their Kway Teow Soup Mixed ($7.90). The herbal bowl of goodness comes with juicy beef balls, tender sliced beef, bouncy tripe and tender chunky beef.

The house specialty of juicy sliced beef in herbal marinade for flavour and aroma, Kway Teow Soup Sliced Beef ($7.80) has never disappointed me. The soup was boiled for a good 24 hours, rich and robust. The hand sliced beef was also very tender and dip into the chilli sauce made from 13 ingredients to further elevates the taste of richness of the beef.

Sauteed Kailan with Salted Fish 4/5

As mentioned the outlet at ARC offers other zichar items besides their fame beef noodles. I got a plate of their Sauteed Kailan with Salted Fish ($6.80) to go with the noodles. It always good to have some greens in each meal right? The sauteed kailan was pretty well executed which still retained a crunchy bite to it flavoured by the fragrant salted fish.

A worthy note I noticed in the menu at ARC outlet is their Big Mixed Beef Bowl without noodles that comes in 3 sizes for serving up to 4 pax. It will be good for family or big group who wants to try the cooked food as well as the delish beef soup.
