IMG_3357

IMG_3258

Song Yue Taiwan Cuisine (松悦台式料理), located in Kallang Leisure Park, has been a popular choice for comforting Taiwanese fare prepared with fresh and quality ingredients. The restaurant has recently unveiled an exciting seasonal ‘Taste of Hakka’ menu, featuring reimagined renditions of traditional Hakka classics. Available from now until 31 December 2025, the menu pays homage to the rich culinary heritage of the Hakka community with a modern touch.

Wok-Fried Abacus Beads 4.8/5

I was most excited for the Wok-Fried Abacus Beads ($20.90), a rare Hakka delicacy that’s hard to come by these days. It didn’t disappoint at all - each abacus bead was soft yet pleasantly chewy, perfectly coated in a fragrant stir-fry of shredded yam and beancurd. Every bite was loaded with umami and kissed with an addictive hint of wok hei.

Hakka Stir-Fry with Pork Belly and Chives 4.2/5

The Hakka Stir-Fry with Pork Belly and Chives ($21.90) may look simple, but it impressed with its balanced mix of textures and flavours. The fragrance of the chives was pronounced in the combination of pork belly, beancurd and peanuts.

Lobster in Superior Broth with Hakka Sweet Rice Wine 4/5

The Lobster in Superior Broth with Hakka Sweet Rice Wine (Market Price) was served bubbling hot in a claypot, peppered with wood ear mushrooms, white shimeiji mushrooms and slices of angelica root. The lobster chunks were a little tough, but otherwise, the nourishing broth was satisfying.

IMG_3366
Traditional Hakka Salt Baked Chicken 4.2/5

The Traditional Hakka Salt Baked Chicken ($36.90) features a whole spring chicken encased in salt and slow-baked. The result was tender, juicy meat infused with a subtle herbal fragrance. We also appreciated how it wasn’t overly salty.

Traditional Mee Sua in Superior White Pepper Broth 4.2/5

My dining companions were fans of the Traditional Mee Sua in Superior White Pepper Broth with Sliced Pork Fillet, Meatballs and Pig’s Stomach ($23.90). Full of warmth, the lightly peppered broth paired nicely with tender pork fillets, meatballs, and cleanly prepared slices of pig’s stomach.

Grandpa’s 3-Hour Slow Braised Pork Belly with Cabbage and Dried Bamboo Shoots 4.5/5

We ended with Grandpa’s 3-Hour Slow Braised Pork Belly ($36.90), a dish that would satisfy fans of fatty pork belly. The pork belly was melt-in-the-mouth tender, balanced by the crunch of cabbage and bamboo shoots. I’d highly recommend pairing this and its rich sauce with a bowl of white rice.

In conjunction with this limited launch, diners can also receive a limited-edition Song Yue jute bag with a minimum order of at least one Hakka dish and a spend of $138 for members or $168 for non-members.

Photos and words by Jo, who loves her Mala (麻辣) at Da La (大辣), discovering hidden food gems and a good cup of matcha latte. Note: This is an invited tasting.

CrystalJadeCNY24-6

Crystal Jade ushers in the Year of the Snake with an exceptional array of festive dishes and set menus across its 17 outlets. Featuring both classic favourites and innovative creations, the offerings showcase the restaurant's hallmark artistry and dedication to authentic flavours. I had the privilege of sampling some highlights, and here's a rundown of the delectable experience.

CrystalJadeCNY24-4
Premium Prosperity Yu Sheng 5/5

The Premium Prosperity Yu Sheng ($128/$198) is an absolute standout. Showcasing Fresh South African Abalone, Great Amberjack Fish, and Australian Scallop, this dish is elevated by a medley of fresh and dried fruits, candied walnuts, and crispy Hsin Chu bee hoon. Deep-fried yam strips further enhance its textural appeal. With its refreshing taste and harmonious interplay of flavours, this Yu Sheng is hands down one of the best I’ve had this year.

CrystalJadeCNY24-8
Braised Superior Bird's Nest in Pumpkin Thick Soup 5/5

A bowl of comfort and indulgence, the Braised Superior Bird's Nest in Pumpkin Thick Soup ($68/pax) is a luxurious treat. Enriched with an assortment of seafood and Hokkaido Sea Urchin, the velvety pumpkin base imparts a natural sweetness that complements the nourishing bird's nest. It is a truly delightful and memorable dish.

CrystalJadeCNY24-13

CrystalJadeCNY24-14
Air-flown French Turbot Fish Prepared Two-ways 4.2/5

Crystal Jade's Air-Flown French Turbot ($24/100g) celebrates this delicate flatfish in two renditions: sautéed and deep-fried. Served with asparagus and black fungus, the preparation highlights the fish's natural sweetness while offering a delightful contrast of textures.

CrystalJadeCNY24-19

CrystalJadeCNY24-20
Shanghainese Style Treasure Pot 4.8/5

The Shanghainese Style Treasure Pot ($128), designed for 3-4 diners, is a refreshing take on the traditional pen cai. Brimming with ingredients such as homemade egg dumplings, mushrooms, prawns, oysters, and fish maw, this rustic one-pot dish is enveloped in a luscious yet lighter sauce — perfect for those seeking a healthier and less heavy alternative.

CrystalJadeCNY24-24
Salt-Baked Kampung Chicken with Hairy Fig 4.8/5

A crowd favourite, the Salt-Baked Kampung Chicken with Hairy Fig ($68.80) delivers exceptional flavour. The natural sweetness of the hairy fig complements the savoury, tender kampung chicken, making this dish a true celebration of balanced flavours.

CrystalJadeCNY24-26
Golden Vegetarian Yam Ring with Assorted Vegetable Medley 4.2/5

Vegetarian diners (and even non-vegetarians!) will enjoy the Golden Vegetarian Yam Ring with Assorted Vegetable Medley ($38). Crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside, the fragrant yam ring pairs wonderfully with the vibrant vegetable medley, offering a delightful textural contrast.

CrystalJadeCNY24-29
Apple-shaped Mochi with Apple Cinnamon Puree 4.2/5

Crystal Jade showcases its creative flair with the Apple-Shaped Mochi with Apple Cinnamon Purée($8.80 for 3pc). This delicate dessert combines mochi's soft, chewy texture with a warmly spiced apple cinnamon filling, making it a unique and satisfying end to the meal.

CrystalJadeCNY24-32
Mango Pomelo & Sago Jelly 4.2/5

A playful twist on the classic dessert, the Mango Pomelo & Sago Jelly ($32.80) reimagines the traditional flavours in a visually stunning and refreshing jelly form. It’s a light and delightful finale to any festive feast.

ManFuYuanCNY2022-54
Man Fu Yuan Classic Salted Baked Sakura Chicken 4.5/5

Requiring a minimum of three days advance order is the Man Fu Yuan Classic Salted Baked Sakura Chicken. It is so tender that the meat fell off the bone with ease.

YUN NANS (云海肴) @ Westgate - Celebrate Chinese New Year Featuring Specialities Prepared With Premium Ingredients Imported From Yunnan

YunNans8

Usher in the Year of the Ox this February with Yun Nans (云海肴), The restaurant has put together six Chinese New Year set menus catering from 4 to 8 pax ($298++ to $838++), featuring specialities prepared with premium ingredients imported from Yunnan. The set menus will be available from 01 February to 28 February 2021.

YunNans5
Prosperity Abalone Yu Sheng 3.5/5

Lo Hei is a must-have at every Chinese New Year feast. It is our unique way of celebrating Chinese New Year in Singapore. Yun Nans has unveiled the Prosperity Abalone Yu Sheng ($58.80/ $78.80) for the occasion. It is available for both dine-in and takeaway.

YunNans9
Yun Nans Prosperity Treasure Hot Pot 4.8/5

Making a coming back this year is the Yun Nans Prosperity Treasure Hot Pot ($288++/ $438++) with a level-up version with even more premium ingredients. In the treasure pot, diners can look forward to delicacies such as wild morel, wild golden fungus, sea cucumber, abalone, scallops, prawns, mushrooms, fish maw and cordyceps flowers, laid with yam and Chinese cabbage in the base.

YunNans12
Traditional Salt Baked Chicken 4.5/5

The Traditional Salted Baked Chicken ($22.80++/ $38.80++) is cooked with two types of ginger - sand ginger and galangal, the kampung chicken is braised, then baked until tender and juicy with the braising sauce penetrating every inch of it.

YunNans15
Steamed Red Grouper Peppercorn Style

Instead of the usual Hong Kong style steamed fish, why not try something new for the new year? I would highly recommend you to the Steamed Red Grouper Peppercorn Style. The aromatic peppercorn gives the steamed fish a full elevated enjoyment.

YunNans21
"Bi Feng Tang" Style Pork Ribs with Truffles 4.2/5

The "Bi Feng Tang" Style Pork Ribs with Truffles ($33.80++) is humongous. I could not resist picking up the pork rib with my hands. A pull with my teeth and the meat falls off the bone with ease. While the thick coat of garlic and chilli is aromatic, I could not taste the truffle at all. Hence I don't think the addition of truffle is necessary at all.

YunNans27
Braised Truffle Ee-fu Noodles 3/5

Same as the pork rib, I could not taste the truffle in the Braised Truffle Ee-fu Noodles ($16.80++). It s a comforting dish to wrap up the savoury dishes before moving to desserts.

YunNans22
Double-boiled Peach Gum and Snow Fungus 3.5/5

The Double-boiled Peach Gum and Snow Fungus ($6.80++) is not only refreshing but nourishing too with ingredients such as Peng Da Hai, peach gum, snow fungus and snow lotus seed.

YunNans26
Freshly Baked New Year Pastry

A must-try is the flaky Freshly Baked New Year Pastry. I thought it is filled with red bean paste, but after checking with the restaurant, I realised it is rose petals, no wonder there is a beautiful floral scent.

Besides the six Chinese New Year dine-in set menus, there is also a Special Chinese New Year Takeaway Set ($298+ Members/ $338 public) for takeaway. The takeaway set comprises prosperity abalone yu sheng, prosperity treasure hotpot, steamed glutinous rice wrapped in lotus leaf and traditional salt baked chicken. The dine-in set menus and takeaway menus are available at their Nex and Jewel Changi Airport outlets too.

Note: This is an invited tasting.
