Nong Geng Ji (农耕记湖南土菜) @ Great World City - Bold Hunan Flavours Meet Family-Style Dining

NongGengJiGreatWorld2

With the rapid expansion of Nong Geng Ji across Singapore, more diners are getting acquainted with the bold, rustic flavours of Hunan cuisine. I recently visited their Great World outlet with my family to try the 4-Pax Cherished Family Moments Set ($138), a hearty spread designed for communal dining. Larger groups can opt for the 6-Pax Joyful Reunion Feast ($188). In conjunction with Parents’ Day, the restaurant sweetens the experience with a scratch-and-win card (chance to win $100 in vouchers) for every table, plus a complimentary mugwort hammer with any set meal. This thoughtful, slightly quirky touch adds to the celebratory occasion.

NongGengJiGreatWorld4
Stir-Fried Pork with Abalone and Chilli 4.2/5

The Stir-Fried Pork with Abalone and Chilli is undoubtedly the centrepiece of the meal. Served in a signature golden wok kept warm over a flame, it arrives with an intoxicating, smoky aroma and wok hei. Tender slices of pork are paired with plump baby abalones, elevating what is typically a humble stir-fry into something more luxurious. The interplay of textures is delightful: the springy bite of abalone, the succulence of pork, and the crunch of Hunan green chillies. Despite its fiery appearance, the heat leans more aromatic than aggressive, making it surprisingly approachable.

NongGengJiGreatWorld14

NongGengJiGreatWorld26
Big Shrimp with Vermicelli and Garlic 4.2/5

A highlight for both flavour and theatrics, the Big Shrimp with Vermicelli and Garlic is cooked tableside. Fresh butterflied prawns are laid over vermicelli, drenched in an aromatic garlic sauce, then steamed for a precise seven minutes. When the lid is lifted, a cloud of garlicky steam fills the air. The prawns are sweet and snappy, but it’s the vermicelli that steals the show, soaking up the umami-rich juices and fragrant garlic broth. Comforting yet indulgent, it offers a welcome contrast to the bolder, spicier dishes.

NongGengJiGreatWorld10
Lotus Root with Superior Pork Broth 4/5

The Lotus Root with Superior Pork Broth provides a soothing interlude amid the spice-laden spread. Simmered for hours, the broth is rich, creamy, and deeply nourishing, drawing out collagen and marrow from the pork ribs. The lotus root here is of the prized “powdery” (mian) variety, breaking apart effortlessly with a soft, almost fluffy texture. Each spoonful is mellow yet flavourful, coating the palate with gentle sweetness and offering a much-needed reset.

NongGengJiGreatWorld6
Stir-Fried Spinach with Century Egg 2.8/5

The Stir-Fried Spinach with Century Egg was the weakest link of the meal. While the idea is appealing, with century egg breaking down into a creamy, umami-rich coating, the execution fell short. There was a noticeable bitterness in the finish, and the spinach could have been cooked slightly longer for a softer texture. The broth also lacked depth, and a more robust stock base would have helped lift the dish. While it still offers an interesting flavour profile, it didn’t quite match up to the rest of the spread.

NongGengJiGreatWorld18
Mao’s Braised Pork 4.5/5

A Hunan classic, Mao’s Braised Pork is a must-order. Unlike the darker Shanghainese version, this rendition achieves its deep amber hue through caramelised sugar and spices. Each cube of pork belly is beautifully layered and braised to perfection — tender to the point of melting in the mouth. The fat is rendered luxuriously without being greasy, while the lean meat remains juicy and flavourful. Rich, sticky, and deeply satisfying, it’s best enjoyed with a bowl of rice to mop up the luscious sauce.

NongGengJiGreatWorld22
Sweet and Sour Chicken with Pineapple 4.2/5

For a non-spicy option, the Sweet and Sour Chicken with Pineapple is a reliable crowd-pleaser. The chicken pieces are fried to a crisp golden exterior, retaining their crunch even after being coated in the glossy sauce. The balance of flavours is well judged, tangy without being overly sweet, with juicy pineapple chunks adding brightness. It’s a refreshing contrast that cuts through the richness of the meal and appeals to all ages.

NongGengJiGreatWorld32
Rock Sugar Golden Fungus Dessert Soup 4/5

Ending on a gentle note, the Rock Sugar Golden Fungus Dessert Soup is both nourishing and refreshing. The golden fungus offers a slightly more velvety bite compared to the usual white variety. Lightly sweetened with rock sugar, the soup is delicate and soothing, allowing the natural flavours to shine. Served chilled, it provides a cooling contrast to the preceding spicy dishes, making it a fitting finale to the meal.

Nong Geng Ji delivers a robust introduction to Hunan cuisine with its bold flavours, generous portions, and communal dining format. The set menu offers a good variety, balancing fiery stir-fries with comforting broths and crowd-pleasing classics. While there are minor inconsistencies, the standout dishes — particularly the Stir-Fried Pork with Abalone and Mao’s Braised Pork — make the experience worthwhile. Coupled with seasonal promotions and family-friendly bundles, it’s a compelling spot for gatherings, especially for those looking to explore the punchy, aromatic world of Hunan flavours.

Longjing (绿茶餐厅) @ Novena Square - Elegant Zhejiang Flavours in a Serene Bamboo-Inspired Setting

LongJingNovenaRestaurant-3

Following its successful debut at Suntec City, where snaking queues became a daily sight, Longjing (绿茶) has expanded with a new outlet at Novena Square. Hailing from Hangzhou, the brand spotlights Zhejiang (Jiangnan) cuisine, known for its light, refined, and produce-forward approach in contrast to the bolder, spice-laden profiles of other Chinese regional cuisines.

Stepping into the Novena space, diners are greeted by a serene bamboo-themed interior, an evolution of the brand’s signature “water town” aesthetic. Glowing lanterns, hand-painted murals, and wooden accents come together to evoke the poetic charm of Jiangnan’s misty waterways, offering a tranquil dining atmosphere that complements the cuisine’s understated elegance.

LongJingNovena18
Vermicelli Wrapped Shrimps 4.2/5

We began with the Vermicelli Wrapped Shrimps ($18.80). Presented on a sizzling hotplate, the dish is theatrically finished tableside with a drizzle of sauce that releases an aromatic burst. The prawns are succulent and bouncy, while the vermicelli acts as a sponge, soaking up the umami-laden seafood juices, garlic, and fragrant oil. Despite its robust flavours, the dish remains balanced and not overly salty, staying true to the restrained seasoning typical of Zhejiang cooking.

LongJingNovena8
Chive and Shrimp Crispy Pancake 3.5/5

The Chive and Shrimp Crispy Pancake ($8.80) offers a contrast in texture. Its thin, golden-brown wrapper shatters upon bite, delivering a brittle crispness with a surprisingly light, non-greasy finish. Within, a fragrant filling of chopped Chinese chives and shrimp provides a punchy, garlicky aroma balanced by the seafood’s natural sweetness.

LongJingNovena6
Double Boiled Black Chicken Soup with Bamboo Fungus 4/5

For something comforting, the Double Boiled Black Chicken Soup with Bamboo Fungus ($7.80) delivers a nourishing, restorative quality. The broth is clear and delicate, with a natural sweetness drawn from hours of double boiling. The bamboo fungus lends an interesting textural dimension, spongy yet gently crispy, absorbing the broth while adding a subtle bite.

LongJingNovena14
Stir-fried Chinese Chive 4/5

Vegetable dishes are handled with equal finesse. The Stir-fried Chinese Chive ($11.80) showcases commendable wok hei, lending a smoky aroma that enhances the chives’ inherent garlicky sharpness. Flash-fried to retain their vibrant green hue and slight crunch, the young chives are tender and aromatic without turning fibrous.

LongJingNovena27
Hangzhou Eggplant with Sweet Peppers 4/5

Equally satisfying is the Hangzhou Eggplant with Sweet Peppers ($9.80). Unlike its oilier Sichuan counterparts, this rendition is lighter and more refined. The eggplant is braised to a silky, melt-in-the-mouth consistency, while sweet peppers introduce a gentle brightness and colour contrast without overpowering the dish.

LongJingNovena25
Longjin Roast Chicken 4.2/5

Among the meat offerings, the Longjing Roast Chicken ($23.80) stands out. Subtly infused with tea aroma, the dish carries a clean, fragrant finish that balances the richness of the roasted fat. The chicken is tender and juicy, encased in a paper-thin, golden skin that crackles lightly upon bite while remaining surprisingly lean.

LongJingNovena35
Fiery Ribs 4.2/5

For those seeking bolder flavours, the Fiery Ribs ($23.80) offer a punchier profile. The ribs boast a crisp exterior and tender, fall-off-the-bone interior, coated in a dry-rub seasoning of dried chillies, garlic, and peppercorns. The heat is fragrant and mildly numbing, reminiscent of mala but less oily and more restrained, making it accessible yet satisfying.

LongJingNovena24
Claypot Rice with Egg, Smoked Pork, Mushroom, and Choy Sum 4.2/5

The Claypot Rice with Egg, Smoked Pork, Mushroom, and Choy Sum ($15.80) rounds off the savoury selections. Cooked traditionally in a claypot, the rice develops a prized scorched crust (guoba) along the base, delivering a smoky crunch that contrasts with the fluffy grains above. Compared to the darker, soy-heavy Cantonese versions, this rendition is cleaner yet still deeply savoury.

LongJingNovena43
Leifeng Pagoda 3.8/5

On a lighter note, the Leifeng Pagoda ($4.80) is a visually appealing dessert inspired by the iconic Pagoda. The silky milk-based pudding is gently sweetened, allowing its creamy, milky fragrance to shine. With its delicate wobble and melt-in-the-mouth texture, it provides a refreshing and elegant conclusion to the meal.

Overall, Longjing’s Novena outlet continues to impress with its thoughtful execution of Zhejiang cuisine — a cuisine that celebrates subtlety, balance, and natural flavours. Coupled with its immersive ambience, it offers a dining experience that feels both transportive and comforting, bringing a slice of Jiangnan’s poetic charm to Singapore.

WanHaoMar2026-12

Marking the arrival of Spring, Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant unveils its "Spring in Bloom Delicacies", a limited-time menu inspired by seasonal ingredients traditionally enjoyed during this vibrant time of year. Available from 4 March to 30 April 2026, the menu showcases the restaurant's dedication to premium, sustainably sourced produce, thoughtfully crafted into refined Cantonese creations. Diners can look forward to an extensive à la carte selection of handcrafted dim sum, alongside a beautifully curated 5-course set menu.

WanHaoMar2026-2

WanHaoMar2026-7
Trio of Appetisers 4/5

We began our dinner with the Trio of Appetisers, a delightful introduction to the season's flavours presented in elegant bite-sized portions. The Deep-Fried Prawn with Mandarin Orange Sauce stood out with its light, crisp exterior coated in a citrusy glaze that added a refreshing zing. The Roast Kurobuta Pork Char Siew with Osmanthus Honey offered a luscious balance of smoky sweetness, elevated by the floral notes of osmanthus. Completing the trio was the Pan-Fried Japanese Scallop with Spring Bamboo Shoot and Yuzu, where the scallop's natural sweetness was complemented by the gentle crunch of bamboo shoot and a subtle yuzu brightness.

WanHaoMar2026-8
Steamed Marble Goby Fillet 3.8/5

Next, we had the Steamed Marble Goby Fillet with Pea Sprout in Lemongrass Chicken Superior Stock. The marble goby fillet was delicate and tender, boasting a clean, naturally sweet flavour and a silky texture that absorbed the broth's essence well. The superior stock, enriched with chicken and lifted by aromatic lemongrass, lent the dish a creamy depth. While comforting and well-executed, the flavour profile leaned towards being slightly one-dimensional, and a more pronounced piquant contrast could have added greater complexity.

WanHaoMar2026-13
Stewed Iberico Pork 4/5

The Stewed Iberico Pork with Fermented Red Bean Curd Paste and Spring Bamboo Shoot, served in a stone pot, delivered a hearty and satisfying note. The Iberico pork was fork-tender, richly infused with the fermented red bean curd paste, giving it a deep umami richness. This was beautifully balanced by the natural sweetness and crisp texture of the spring bamboo shoots, adding both contrast and dimension to the dish.

WanHaoMar2026-22
Golden Vermicelli with Crab Meat, Spring Bamboo Shoot and Ginger 3.8/5

Following that, the Golden Vermicelli with Crab Meat, Spring Bamboo Shoot and Ginger offered an interplay of textures. The vermicelli, deep-fried to a golden crisp, provided a light crunch that paired well with the plump, sweet crab meat and crunchy bamboo shoots. While enjoyable, the accompanying sauce could have been brighter and more vibrant to better tie the elements together and elevate the overall dish.

WanHaoMar2026-25
Chilled White Chrysanthemum Jelly with Honey Sorbet 3/5

To conclude, the Chilled White Chrysanthemum Jelly with Honey Sorbet provided a refreshing and soothing finish. The chrysanthemum jelly was light and subtly floral, complemented by the gentle sweetness of the honey sorbet — a clean and palate-cleansing end to the meal.

Overall, the Spring in Bloom Delicacies menu at Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant captures the essence of the season through refined Cantonese craftsmanship, highlighting quality ingredients with elegant restraint. While some dishes could benefit from bolder contrasts, the menu remains a thoughtful and polished celebration of springtime flavours.

Nong Geng Ji (农耕记) @ Orchard Gateway - Limited-Time Pressure-Cooked Pineapple Chicken at Only $22.80

IMG_2631

Nong Geng Ji (农耕记) has introduced a limited-time festive special to celebrate the season. An elevated take on the restaurant’s signature pressure-cooked chicken, this seasonal creation features organic French pineapple-fed chickens, said to be rich in vitamin C, DHA, and omega-3.

IMG_2644

For reunion gatherings, opt for the Pineapple Chicken Set Menu, thoughtfully curated at $108 for 4 pax and $168 for 6 pax. The set includes a mix of the restaurant’s signatures alongside festive specials.

IMG_2625
Pressure-Cooked Pineapple Chicken 4.2/5

The Pressure-Cooked Pineapple Chicken ($22.80) was undoubtedly the highlight for us. Despite its name, the dish does not contain pineapple. Instead, the free-range chicken from Aqina Farm is pineapple-fed, lending the meat a subtle natural sweetness. We were impressed by how incredibly tender it was, and the rich, savoury sauce paired well with white rice.

IMG_2572

IMG_2628
Pan-seared Green Chillies with Century Egg 3.8/5

For appetisers, the chilled Pan-Seared Green Chillies with Century Egg ($10.80), served in a mortar, was an easy pick. You can choose to pound it yourself or have the staff assist. The dish was creamy, with lightly smoky green chillies that carried a gentle heat, though it was slightly salty when eaten on its own.

IMG_2578

IMG_2583
Dry-Fried Green Beans with Preserved Mustard Green 4/5

The Dry-Fried Green Beans with Preserved Mustard Green ($12.80) were fragrant and well-executed, stir-fried to a satisfying crunch.

IMG_2610
Big Shrimp with Vermicelli and Garlic 3.8/5

The Big Shrimp with Vermicelli and Garlic ($19.80) was packed with garlicky, savoury flavours that the vermicelli absorbed thoroughly. However, we found it a little too oily for our preference.

IMG_2632

IMG_2638
Steamed Fish with Chopped Chilli 4/5

The Steamed Fish with Chopped Chilli ($28.80) was a new dish to us, featuring a sizable steamed fish head topped with vermicelli and chopped chilli. While the fish was quite bony, the meat itself was tender. Do request a lower spice level if needed, as the default heat packs quite a punch.

IMG_2619
Lotus Root with Superior Pork Broth 3.8/5

The Lotus Root with Superior Pork Broth ($4.80 per pax) provided a comforting, homely finish to the meal, tying everything together nicely.

SO DO FUN (蜀都丰) joined our local F&B scene in June 2024 and has since opened its newest and third outlet at The Centrepoint, nestled among the vibrant dining options in the basement. The restaurant is helmed by Master Chef Peng Zi Yu, who is recognised as the Sichuan cuisine mentor to international artiste and celebrity chef Nicholas Tse.

IMG_9258

IMG_9255

SO DO FUN prides itself on using exceptionally fresh fish, with live fish delivered daily from Malaysia. Each fish is freshly filleted and cooked only upon order. Their other two outlets are located in Bugis and Punggol.

IMG_9304

IMG_9306
Mashed Eggplant with Chilli 4/5

Our lunch began with the Mashed Eggplant with Chilli ($11.80), served chilled. The dish was distinctly garlicky and mild on the spice.

IMG_9319

IMG_9330
Boiled Fresh Fish in Spicy Broth 4.5/5

The main highlight arrived next, the Boiled Fresh Fish in Spicy Broth ($49.80 for Large), which comfortably feeds 3 to 4 pax. A smaller 2-pax portion is also available at $29.80. We went with their signature Spicy Broth, though Sauerkraut and Fiery broths are available as alternatives. I recommend adding a bowl of Wuchang Rice ($1.50) to pair with it.

True to their commitment to freshness, the tender fish slices were paired with bean sprouts, kelp, beancurd skin, cucumber and konjac strips, all submerged in a robust, aromatic and numbing broth. While some may find this on the oilier and saltier side, we found it authentic and deeply flavourful.

IMG_9328

IMG_9345
Grilled Prawns with Vermicelli and Minced Garlic 4.2/5

During our previous visit, the Grilled Prawns with Vermicelli and Minced Garlic ($18.80) were cooked tableside on a gas stove. Now fully prepared in the kitchen, the dish remains just as satisfying, with the vermicelli thoroughly soaked in its fragrant, garlicky housemade sauce.

IMG_9282

IMG_9285
Stir-Fried Pork with Chilli Peppers 4.2/5

Next was the Stir-Fried Pork with Chilli Peppers ($17.80), featuring tender pork slices, charred chillies and crunchy white fungus. It delivered a gentle heat alongside a pleasant smokiness.

IMG_9263

IMG_9270
Chengdu Mapo Tofu 4/5

The Chengdu Mapo Tofu ($11.80) uses a firmer tofu, coated in a spicy, savoury sauce with minced pork. The heat here packed a punch.

IMG_9295

IMG_9300
Braised Fresh Tofu Skin with Eggs 4/5

Recommended by the staff, the Braised Fresh Tofu Skin with Eggs ($13.80) offered a comforting, non-spicy contrast to the rest of the meal. It was mild, hearty and well-balanced.

IMG_9321
Jasmine Lemon Tea 4.2/5

To end, the Jasmine Lemon Tea ($3.50) was refreshing, fragrant, and mildly sweetened, perfect after all the spice. It also came in a pretty big cup, which we appreciated.
