Verandah Rael's @ TripleOne Somerset - New Peranakan and Indonesian Cuisine Restaurant With Storybook-inspired Interior

VerandahRestaurant-2

New at TripleOne Somerset is Verandah @ Rael's, offering Peranakan and Indonesian cuisine in a colonial style, storybook-inspired interior. The restaurant strives to bring the warmth of togetherness and the taste of home in their food.

Verandah50
Chicken Satay 4/5

We started our dinner at Verandah with the Chicken Satay ($9.80) grilled to a nice tender, paired with traditional peanut sauce.

Verandah62
Pong Tauhu Soup 4/5

Next is a bowl of hearty and comforting Pong Tauhu Soup ($6.90). I could taste the depth of flavours in the broth, which probably came from the long hours of boiling, drawing from the pork and prawn's essence. Rounding up the delicious soup are juicy meatballs and crunchy bamboo shoots.

Verandah59
Chicken Buah Keluak 4.2/5

A staple Peranakan dish is the Chicken Buah Keluak ($19.90), whereby the chicken is braised in a tangy tamarind gravy. Minced meat is mixed with spices and stuffed into the nut.

Verandah53
Nonya Chap Chye 4.2/5

Stewed to a delightfully soft texture is the Nonya Chap Chye ($12.90), which comprises a medley of vegetables such as cabbage, shiitake mushrooms, beancurd strips and tang hoon.

Verandah70
Babi Pongteh 4.2/5

A favourite Peranakan dish of mine is the Babi Pongteh ($18.90). Verandah does a delicious rendition in which the sweet and savoury stewed pork belly and turnips are slow-cooked in a thick fermented soybean sauce with a peppery hint.

Verandah74
Signature Indo Chilli Beef 3.5/5

Besides the Peranakan dishes, we also tried a couple of their Indonesian dishes. While I enjoyed the aroma from the spices for the Signature Indo Chilli Beef ($19.90), the texture was a little tough for my liking.

Verandah65
Honey Pork 3.5/5

Similar to the Signature Indo Chilli Beef, I find the Honey Pork ($16.90) a bit tough in texture too. However, the honey black sauce drizzled over the crispy stir-fried pork is deliciously appetising.

Verandah86
Grilled Sotong with Kicap Manis 3.8/5

The Grilled Sotong with Kicap Manis ($18.90) was fresh and huge with a delightful bouncy bite. I only hope there was more of the sweet and piquant soy sauce, mixed with spices marinade.

Verandah89
Panna Cotta with Pulut Hitam 3/5

Wrapping up the dinner is the Panna Cotta with Pulut Hitam ($8.90). The panna cotta is served in a tall glass topped with black glutinous rice and rich coconut milk. I am slightly disappointed that the panna cotta is not creamy enough. If I had a choice, I would still prefer the classic rendition of the traditional pulut hitam dessert.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

Jia He Chinese Restaurant @ One Farrer Hotel Connexion - Serving Traditional Chinese Classics And Reimagined Dishes

JiaHe6

Opened just November 2019 within the Connexion in Farrer Park, Jia He Chinese Restaurant offers a wide array of Chinese cuisine dishes from traditional Chinese classics such as Steamed BBQ Pork Bun to reimagined dishes such as Steamed Bak Kut The Xiao Long Bao. Not to be missed as well are their signature dishes such as Crispy Hor Fun with Seafood and Egg Sauce. Helmed by chefs with decades of experience from various top hotel dining restaurants along with one that specialises in the art of dim sum creation, diners can expect premium-grade dishes at affordable prices.

JiaHe2
Sauteed Stuffed Button Mushroom with Truffle Sauce 4/5, Steamed Bak Kut The Xiao Long Bao 4.2/5

We started off with the appetiser dishes - Sauteed Stuffed Button Mushroom with Truffle Sauce ($14) and Steamed Bak Kut The Xiao Long Bao. The uniquely flavoured bak ku teh xiao long bao has a rich herbal broth encased in a delicate beetroot dumpling skin, while the sauteed stuffed button mushroom was juicy with a nice crisp texture.

JiaHe3
Double Boiled Chicken Soup with Stuffed Pig Maw, Shark's Fin and Sarawak Pepper 4/5

Next, we had the Double Boiled Chicken Soup with Stuffed Pig Maw, Shark's Fin and Sarawak Pepper ($138) which was luscious and rich. The stuffed pig maw and shark's fin is added to up the indulgence and provide the boast in flavours and textures of this nourishing soup.

JiaHe9
Crisp-fried Fillet of Sea Perch with Lemongrass and Pepper 3.8/5

Crisp-fried Fillet of Sea Perch with Lemongrass and Pepper ($18) features a crispy fish fillet dressed in a spicy-sweet lemongrass sauce.

JiaHe10
Wok-fried Live Prawn with Garlic and Shallot 3.8/5

The Wok-fried Live Prawn with Garlic and Shallot ($28) was plump and juicy, coated in a thick sweet, spicy sauce which elevates the taste of the fresh seafood.

JiaHe14
Crisp-fried Hor Fun with Seafood and Egg Sauce 4/5

The Crisp-fried Hor Fun with Seafood and Egg Sauce ($24/small) comes in the form of crispy seafood hor fun. A skinnier version of deep-fried skinny kway teow is used for the dish and is paired with a thickened egg seafood gravy. The nest of fried hor fun lost its crispiness when smothered by the egg gravy, and gave a crackling sound as it softens.

JiaHe7
Roasted Peking Duck 4/5

The Roasted Peking Duck ($55/whole) is the highlight of our meal. The duck air-dried for 24 hours before being barbecued, basting the meat and rendering the skin extremely crispy. Best enjoyed with some vegetables and wrapped in a thin pancake.

JiaHe15
Chilled Back Glutinous Rice with Ice Cream 4.2/5

To round off the meal, we had the Chilled Black Glutinous Rice with Ice Cream ($7) from their desserts menu. The Black Glutinous Rice is encased in a firm ring of coconut jelly, and also comes with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to add a subtle sweetness and luxurious mouthfeel to the black glutinous rice.

JiaHe1

To commemorate Singapore’s 55th Birthday, Jia He will be having a 30% discount for their Lunch & Dinner ala-carte menu for both dine-in and takeaways/delivery (with free delivery for orders above $50). Relish @ Fraser Tower - Transformed Into Roketto Izakaya When Night Falls

Relish26

For those that missed the food at Wild Rocket by Chef Willin Low when it closed last year, you will be rejoiced to know that Chef Willin has brought the Mod-Sin DNA of Wild Rocket to Relish at Fraser Tower. When night falls, Relish will be transformed into Roketto Izakaya offering a casual dining bar concept featuring modern Singapore small bites and sharing plates, in the evening of Tuesdays to Saturdays.

Relish9
Fish Collagen Broth 4.5/5

Having not dined in Wild Rocket before, I am not sure what to expect at Roketto Izakaya. Our first dish is the Fish Collagen Broth ($5). The flavourful and milky broth is from the essence of slow cooking the fish bones. No milk is added. The centrepiece is the fish cake that is coated with deep-fried egg. There is even fat choy in the soup. Chef Willin has kept the characteristic of our local fried fish soup but elevated it in his interpretation.

Relish12
Har Jeong Pork Keropok 3.5/5

The Har Jeong Pork Keropok ($8.50) is quite addictive on its own. The thinly sliced pork belly is deep-fried until bacon-like crispy with the pungent prawn paste flavour. However, I am mix about the kaffe lime mayo dip. I felt that the intensity of the kaffe lime, sort of overpowered the prawn paste flavour.

Relish20
Tandoori Pappadum Nachos 4/5

The Tandoori Pappadum Nachos ($8.50) is not your typical nachos with cheese dip. Instead, the corn chips are replaced with pappadum and paired with tandoori minced meat and yoghurt. An interesting take giving it an Indian influence.

Relish24
Aburaage Rojak Salad 4.8/5

The Aburaage Rojak Salad ($15) elevated the local dish with the use of the Japanese aburaage in place of the local tau pok. The 'hae kor" ice cream substitutes the prawn paste sauce for rojak, binding the dish together. This is a brilliant dish that transforms a three dollar hawker dish into a fifteen dollar restaurant dish.

Relish27
Har Jeong Tin Gai 4.2/5

The Har Jeong Tin Gai ($12) looks like chicken drumstick at one glance. They are really tender and juicy with a light crispy batter.

Relish36
Curry Chicken Shepherd Pie 4.5/5

I thought the Curry Chicken Shepherd Pie ($15.80) is a crazy idea but Chef Willin actually made that happen, and it tastes delicious. You have to try it for yourself to know how great the combination really works. The curry chicken recipe is super shiok.

Relish37
Krapow Prata Pizza 4/5

Chef Willin's love of Thai flavours can be seen in the Krapow Prata Pizza ($15). Instead of pizza dough, a crispy prata takes its place. It is topped with spicy minced meat, Thai basil, chilli and cheese.

Relish42
Nasi Lemak Chicken Wings 3.5/5

The Nasi Lemak Chicken Wings ($8.50) comes with liquid rice and ikan bilis. It is a unique take of the traditional dish. However, it didn't quite excite me. I didn't like the skinny, crispy chicken wings. I prefer those that are tender and juicy.

Relish45
Rendang Beef Cheek 3/5

While everything has been spot on so far, the Rendang Beef Cheek ($20) pales from the rest. The beef cheek probably has been sous vide which lacks the fibrous bite. The rendang also fell short in flavours and depth.

Relish50
Char Siew Rice 3.5/5

Unfortunately, I didn't like the Char Siew Rice ($20) too. While the char siew is tender, it didn't have the char and sweetness that made me fell in love with the roast. The brown rice was a bit too hard and dry for me also.

Relish57
Wild Rocket Chendol 4.2/5

Relish62
Bur Bur Hitam 4/5, Wild Rocket Strawberry Cheesecake $9.20

For desserts, we have Wild Rocket Chendol ($8.50), Bur Bur Hitam ($7.80) and Wild Rocket Strawberry Cheesecake ($9.20). I would recommend saving some space for these wonderful desserts. I only hope I have a second stomach.

Relish2

Although I have not visited Wild Rocket, I am glad that I still can taste some of the signature wild rocket dishes, in a more casual form at Roketto Izakaya. Chef Willin's modern Singapore cuisine indeed has brought our local food into a whole new level.

Full Of Luck Restaurant @ Holland Village - Hearty New Menu

FullOfLuck18

Full of Luck Restaurant at Holland Village, known for its modern touch for classic Cantonese fare has launched a new menu to tantalise the taste buds of its diners. We dropped by the restaurant recently to try out some of the new dishes on the new menu.

FullOfLuck3
Sesame Prawn Toast with Yuzu Mayonnaise 3/5

We started our dinner with some light bites such as the Sesame Prawn Toast with Yuzu Mayonnaise ($12) and Salted Egg Molten Lava Cheese Tart ($10 for 3pc). Prawn toast is not new. What makes the classic dim sum item different from the norm is the addition of yuzu in the sauce, enliven the enjoyment.

FullOfLuck12
Salted Egg Molten Lava Cheese Tart 3/5

Quite similar to the Hokkaido cheese tart, the Salted Egg Molten Lava Cheese Tart ($10 for 3pc) is an upgraded version with oozing salted egg filling. A delightfully sweet and savoury combination. However, I find it a bit stretch for modern Cantonese cuisine.

FullOfLuck10
Black Vinegar Pork Ribs 4/5

One of my favourite dishes is Black Vinegar Pork Ribs. It has a beautiful coat of sticky sweetness complementing the folk tender pork ribs. This is best to have together with a bowl of steam rice.

FullOfLuck16
Chicken Poached Rice in Collagen Broth

FullOfLuck17

A hearty and comforting bowl is the Chicken Poached Rice in Collagen Broth ($16). A housemade broth that is slow-boiled for hours is poured into the pot of rice and chicken. Looking out for the dancing rice, when the fried rice crisps are poured into the sizzling hot broth. We were told that their Poached Rice with Fish in Pumpkin Broth is as good too.

FullOfLuck20
Crispy Pu-Er Tea Smoked Chicken 4.2/5

We waited for a while for the Crispy Pu-Er Tea Smoked Chicken ($20), but it is worthwhile. It is a delightful aromatic dish. The chicken is tender and juicy, with super crispy skin. I also like the thoughtful touch of the Japanese cucumbers marinated with osmanthus and plum sauce at the side that helps to cut the grease. It even comes with homemade ginger-scallion sauce to complement the smoked chicken.

FullOfLuck23
Pandan-infused Black Glutinous Rice with Mango (Hot) 3/5

For dessert, we tried both the Pandan-infused Black Glutinous Rice with Mango (Hot) and Steamed Milk Pudding with Ginger (Chilled). Unfortunately, dessert is not their forte. The combination for the Pandan-infused Black Glutinous Rice with Mango (Hot) is a bit weird for me. I would prefer to stick with the classic. The Steamed Milk Pudding with Ginger is also not as silky and smooth as I would have liked.

FullOfLuck24
Steamed Milk Pudding with Ginger (Chilled) 3/5

With the new menu launched, Full of Luck Restaurant has also rolled out a few promotions. If you are looking for a quick or casual business lunch, there is Weekday Lunch Delight priced at $12.80 with delectable choices of appetisers, mains and beverages. Citibank credit cards member will also get to enjoy 15% discount on regular priced items up to 28 February 2020.

Godmama @ Funan - Presenting Godma And Mama's Heirloom Recipes Anew

GodMama18

Godmama at Funan is a modern Peranakan restaurant and bar. Stemming from the initial idea of preserving an heirloom recipe of egg skin popiah which is passed down from one of the co-owners' Godma and Mama. The concept eventually evolved into one that serves not only the egg skin popiah but also includes the classic Peranakan dishes, a mod-Peranakan brunch and cocktails.

GodMama5
All Star Egg Skin Popiah 4/5

Our dinner started with the All Star Egg Skin Popiah ($6.50), recreated using Godma’s family recipe. It takes 4 hours to prepare the jicama stew. Despite its dark colour, the jicama was quite balanced in flavour, and there was still a light crunch to it. Toppings include cucumber strips, lettuce, crispy garlic bits, coriander, sprouts and tiger prawns, which made it all the more satisfying for me as a popiah lover.

GodMama12
Ngoh Hiang 3.8/5

Next up was Ngoh Hiang ($11.90). The filling is a blend of fresh prawns, minced meat and water chestnut seasoned with five-spice. I like that it was not overly seasoned with spices, and it was of a looser mix that was moist and juicy. The chilli cuka at the side was punchy, which made the meat roll even more appetising.

GodMama7
Babi Assam 3.8/5

Babi Assam ($13.90 as part of the Executive Lunch Set; $18.90 for dinner) is Head chef’s signature dish. The pork belly is simmered in a spicy and tangy tamarind stew. The melt-in-your-mouth pork belly was the highlight for sure, and the gravy was robust without being too salty.

GodMama9
Ayam Buah Keluak 3/5

Although the menu states that the Ayam Buah Keluak ($15.90 as part of the Executive Lunch Set; $19.90 for dinner) is a stew, it appeared to be more of a braised dish. Presented in a more contemporary manner, you get two tender chicken thighs and buah keluak which are infused with fresh root spices of galangal and turmeric. I love that the nuts are served as a whole, which allows me to enjoy its flavours on its own. However, the meat did not seem to have taken in the flavours of the sauce. This mild version of Ayam Buah Keluak may sit well with diners who are not that into buah keluak.

GodMama25
Sambal Udang 2.8/5

One of the seafood choices is Sambal Udang ($17.90 as part of the Executive Lunch Set; $23.90 for dinner). The tiger prawns are tossed in a weak sambal sauce that lacked zest. My prawns were dry too.

GodMama19
Nyonya Chap Chye 4/5

Godmama's Nyonya Chap Chye (available as part of the Executive Set Lunch; $13.90 a la carte) is refined with prawn bisque as the base for braising the vegetables.

GodMama36
Sticky Red Date Pudding 4/5

The desserts left a much deeper impression than their main dishes. Turning a traditional drink of Longan Red Date into a dessert, the Sticky Red Date Pudding ($9.90) is served hot with longan tea glaze and vanilla ice cream. It was this dessert that made me overate that evening.

GodMama27
Pulut Hitam Panna Cotta 3.8/5

The jiggly Pulut Hitam Panna Cotta ($8.90) was light with a mellow sweetness. I love the chewy pulut hitam resting underneath the panna cotta especially.

GodMama32
Gingerflower Lychee Sorbet 2.8/5

A much lighter option would be Gingerflower Lychee Sorbet ($10.90). Sorbet tends to be overly sweetened to compensate for the lack of creaminess, which was the case here as well.

GodMama2

Godmama may not have dived into the complexity of Peranakan cuisine, but it allows diners to have a glimpse of the flavours in a relatively more casual and fun manner.
