White Rose Cafe @ York Hotel

IMG_1980ed

If you can run the same Penang Hawkers' Fare buffet for the past 30 years, that means something isn't it? Yes the ever popular Penang Hawkers' Fare buffet at York Hotel's White Rose Cafe is back again from 04 September to 20 September 2015. 11 chefs from Penang has came all the way from Penang bring you the best of Penang's authentic street food.

IMG_1974ed

During my visit, white rose cafe was fully booked with walk in customers forming a queue at the entrance. The different live stations around the restaurant has diners eagerly waiting for their food while chefs and cooks tirelessly prepared bowl after bowl, plate after plate of Penang's street food. Let me give you a quick tour of the different dishes presented by the 11 stations at the Penang Hawkers' Fare.

IMG_1990ed
Penang Rojak 4/5

A combination of refreshing ingredients tossed in a robust prawn paste sauce and topped with nutty peanuts, the Penang Rojak is so addictive with a party of flavours, whetting up the appetite.

IMG_1976ed
Oyster Omelette 4.2/5

The dishes were served in small portion which I do not mind because it allows me to pace myself and try all the different offerings. Starting with the Oyster Omelette that is fried to an exterior crisp with fluffy innard, this is one of my favourite dishes for the night which I gone back for a few more servicing.

IMG_1985ed
Penang Char Kway Teow 4.2/5

One of the longest queue among the different stations is the Penang Char Kway Teow. A nice balance of wok hei and savoury with lots of prawns and cockles completes the indulgence.

IMG_1982ed
Kway Teow Soup 4.5/5

A must try is the Kway Teow Soup that comes with silky smooth kway teow, delectable fish cake and bouncy fish balls. Besides the soup version, dry version is also available.

IMG_1978ed
Cuttlefish Kang Kong 4/5

The Cuttlefish Kang Kong topped with peanuts and prawn paste allows the enjoyment of the crunchy kang kong and cuttlefish to the fullest.

IMG_1987ed
Nonya Chicken Kapitan 4/5

For a substantial plate, the Nonya Chicken Kapitan will be a good choice with the nonya dry version curry filled with aromatic herbs and spices.

IMG_1992ed
Penang Laksa 4.2/5

The slurping good Penang Laksa with its complex sourish and spicy broth with pieces of fish meat is just too good to stop with one bowl.

IMG_1983ed
Penang Prawn Mee 3.5/5

The Penang Prawn Mee on the other hand felt a bit short of my expectation. I though the broth is not robust enough. Nevertheless it is still a good bowl to add on to the spread of indulgence.

IMG_1993ed
Lor Bak 3/5

I actually welcome the break from all the carbohydrates with a plate of Lor Bak with a platter of other deep fried ingredients such as tofu, yam prawn.

IMG_1989ed
Ban Chang Kueh 4.5/5

A must try at the buffet spread is the Ban Chang Kueh that is made freshly on the spot. The paper thin crepe, pancake or shell is filled with fragrant, nutty peanuts. This is definitely one of the best I have eaten.

IMG_1995ed
Chendol 4/5

How can we not have the staple Penang Chendol with such a feast? This is the perfect dessert to end the night. The dessert station also offers Ice Kachang and Ice Ball.

The Penang Hawkers' Fare is definitely worth the money with the delicious spread of Penang street food. It is also reasonable priced at $25.80++ per adult on weekdays and $28.80 ++ per adult on weekends. Children below 12 years old is priced at $18.80++ on weekdays and $20.80++ on weekends.

Centre Satay Bee Hoon @ Ang Mo Kio Ave 6 Food Centre

IMG_5970ed

You may wonder why there are very few Satay Bee Hoon stalls around the island. Satay bee hoon may seems like a very easy to make dish. You just need to cook the rice vermicelli, ingredients and pour the satay sauce over it. In actual fact, the making of the satay sauce or peanut gravy is a very labour intensive job. Long hours are needed in the roasting, grinding and cooking of the peanuts to get the soft nutty consistency.

IMG_5964ed
Satay Bee Hoon 4.2/5

Whenever I have craving for the Satay Bee Hoon ($3.50/$4.50), one of my favourite stalls to go to is Centre Satay Bee Hoon at Ang Mo Kio Ave 6 Food Centre. What I like about their satay bee hoon is the smooth nutty consistency of the satay sauce. I have come across stalls that sold me very coarse peanut gravy which felt like the stall took the sauce from the satay stall and pour it on my plate.

IMG_5962ed
Satay Bee Hoon 4.2/5

In the plate of satay bee hoon at Centre Satay Bee Hoon, you can find many ingredients such as prawn, cuttlefish, pork slices, cockles, kang kong and the supporting actor the rice vermicelli. The soft rice vermicelli still retains a bit of bite coating the fragrant satay sauce in each mouthful.

Grub Noodle Bar @ Rangoon Road

IMG_6149ed

Following the success of Grub at Bishan Park and Fix Cafe at HomeTeamNS, the folks from Cookyn Inc opens their third F&B concept, Grub Noodle Bar at Rangoon Road. They have renovated and converted their previous cooking studio into a supper bar servicing  beef noodles, assam laksa, delightful appetisers and craft beers.

IMG_6152ed
Kang Kong Salad 4.2/5

The wife and me enjoyed the Kang Kong Salad ($7) very much. Tossed in a Nonya achar and house dressing, this interpretation of the achar was crunchy goodness that we can never have enough of it.

IMG_6163ed
Baby Cuttlefish 3/5

What is a bar without bar snack or food right? The Baby Cuttlefish ($9) was deep fried to a delightful crisp with basil pesto mayo. While I enjoyed the crispiness and the hint of Indian spice, I thought the batter was a bit thick for the size of the cuttlefish.

IMG_6157ed
Soft Shell Crab 3/5

The Soft Shell Crab ($13) is another delightful deep fried snack with mayo and house seasoning. I thought a little bit more of the mayo and seasoning would be better.

IMG_6155ed
Chicken Drumlets 3.5/5

The other enjoyable deep fried food on the menu is the Chicken Drumlets ($9). It is coated with curry leaves, garlic and sesame seeds. The crunchy bites and the palatable seasoning made it finger licking good.

IMG_6150ed
Weihenstephan Hefeweissbier Dunkel 4.2/5

With all the deep fried snacks, it is best to go with a bottle of beer. Grub Noodle Bar offers a selection of Belgium and German craft beers. I had the Weihenstephan Hefeweissbier Dunkel ($14) which was light, sweet and fruity. It is quite easy to drink and goes well with the deep fried snacks.

IMG_6161ed
Hokkaido Scallop Tataki 4.5/5

Not to be missed at Grub Noodle Bar is the seafood appetisers. Their seafood are freshly supplied from the seafood supplier just a couple of door steps away. The Hokkaido Scallop Tataki ($15) was mind blowing with its well balanced execution to showcase the sweetness of the fresh scallop. The scallop was lightly torched with mustard glaze and mandarin orange segments.

IMG_6167ed
Venus Clams 4.2/5

You can't really go wrong with fresh clams, the Venus Clams ($13) sauteed with beer, toasted ginger and lemongrass broth was plump and sweet. I could not really taste the lemongrass but the freshness of the clams were already as good as its own. Hence I am not complaining.

IMG_6166ed
Live Tiger Prawns 4.5/5

How come you peeled the prawn so fast, asked one of the diners? This is because the Live Tiger Prawns ($15) was fresh and the shell simply comes off the flesh with ease. The tiger prawns were steamed in sake, garlic and ginger glaze. The execution once again highlighted the freshness of the seafood, allowing the nature sweetness to be the star.

IMG_6176ed
Beef Noodles

The Beef Noodles ($12 to $19) is the signature item at Grub Noodle Bar. The noodle bar serves only the dry version that comes with fresh egg noodles in house sauce, 100% beef meatballs, minced beef, mushroom stew and a bowl of beef broth with a choice of beef slice. There are 4 types of beef slice choices namely Pasture-Fed Brisket, Pasture-Fed Rump, 100% Hormone and Antibiotic free 150-day Grainfed Angus Sirloin and 100% Hormone and Antibiotic free 150-day Grainfed Angus Ribeye.

IMG_6170e

There is also free flow serving of homemade Chinchalok. This is to die for. It was so good that I poured the whole thing into my bowl of noodle.

IMG_6178ed
Beef Noodle 4.5/5

The Beef Noodle served at Grub Noodle Bar is not your typical or classic beef noodle that you get elsewhere. The egg noodle texture is quite similar to those Chinese ramen noodle with a delectable bite. What made this a good bowl of noodle is the slurping good in house sauce. I even added the chinchalok into the bowl of noodles to give it a more spicy kick and lift in flavour.

IMG_6175ed
Beef Broth with Beef Slices 4.2/5

I felt that the beef noodle is quite value for money. Besides the bowl of noodles, it also comes with a huge bowl of beef broth with a choice of beef slices. Among the 4 choices of Pasture-Fed BrisketPasture-Fed Rump100% Hormone and Antibiotic free 150-day Grainfed Angus Sirloin and 100% Hormone and Antibiotic free 150-day Grainfed Angus Ribeye, my favourite is the ribeye which is really soft and tender. While I find the beef broth on the sweet side, I think it will be well received by the younger crowd.

IMG_6171ed
Assam Laksa 4.2/5

Due to diet restriction, some of us may not take beef. In this case, I would recommend the Assam Laksa ($13) with prawns, fresh cucumber, pineapple chinks and fish gravy. This is surprisingly good. The broth was really robust that is packed with the flavours for a good bowl of assam laksa.

IMG_6147ed

Grub Noodle Bar will be opened from 16 October 2014 from 7pm to 12 midnight. After trying out the menu, I am confident this will be the next supper hot place if they can continue with the quality and consistent.

Fei Lou Porridge @ Telok Blangah Crescent Market & Food Centre

IMG_3203ed

If you have been following me on instagram or my facebook page, you will noticed that I have been coming back to Fei Lou Porridge to have late dinner for 2 consecutive weekends. The food here definitely cannot compare to restaurant standard but it is something that is homely, comforting and affordable.

IMG_3200ed

The first visit, I felt that the father and son team was a bit unfriendly. They hardly spoke or acknowledged your order not say even a smile. For a moment I thought they were mute. I kept observing them until I saw them talking to a few of their regular customers. In my 2nd visit, I managed to exchange a few words with the uncle and realized he is actually quite nice. He even gave me a goodbye wave after I finished my dinner and left the place.

IMG_3202ed
Ham & Century Egg Porridge 4/5

The stall offers quite a few choices of porridge but my favourite has been the Ham & Century Egg Porridge ($3). The smooth and silky Cantonese style porridge need no further seasoning. If I am not wrong from what I have observed, the stall added some chicken stock in cooking the porridge. Although the bowl of porridge is cheap, I still get value in return with a generous servicing of century egg, ham and even fried white bait fish.

IMG_3192ed
Ham Macaroni 3.5/5

The beehoon here usually sold out pretty fast so we ended up ordering the Ham Macaroni ($3). I felt that the stall added a bit too much of the chicken stock resulting it to be on the salty side. Nevertheless a hearty bowl of ham macaroni to satisfy the hungry tummy.

IMG_3197ed
Chicken Feet 4/5

Another must order dish for me whether I come here is the Chicken Feet ($3). There are at least about 5-6 pieces of the well braised chicken feet that has absorbed the braising sauce perfectly. Before servicing they will topped it with a few spoonful of peanuts which I like to eat with my porridge.

IMG_3196ed
Cuttlefish & Cabbage 4.2/5

My favourite dish at Fei Lou Porridge is the Cuttlefish & Cabbage ($4.50). This is something different from usual cuttlefish kang kong that is drenched with rich overpowering prawn paste sauce. The cuttlefish cabbage simply allows the sweetness of the cabbage to shine and complement the cuttlefish. Topped with a generous servicing for fried shallot, this is light, refreshing and serves as a delectable side dish to go with the porridge.

Le Chasseur @ Eunos

IMG_4334ed

Le Chasseur used to be located at New Bridge Road opposite Clark Quay Central Mall before moving to its new location at Eunos Industrial Estate. Having tried the food and knowing that it has moved to the east, nearer to my place, I was looking forward to my revisit. Upon reaching the destination with fellow foodies, Edsmond, Mandy, Nat and Nicole, I pain for the owner. Business was bad, there were many deserted tables and we were probably the only customers. Unlike the days in the old premise, the restaurant was so busy that it was pretty hard to get a table.

IMG_4337ed
Ngor Hiang 4/5

After a quick browsing of the menu, we decided to try the Ngor Hiang ($5). Actually we were quite taken part by the portion that was served. Sad to say I could get probably twice as many from the zichar stall next door. I know I can't compare the standard and quality but we have to be realistic that we are at a industrial estate food court now, there is competition just a few stalls away. Putting the portion issue aside, the ngor hiang or prawn roll was actually pretty good. Fried to a nice outer crisp, the delectable filling was flavourful with lovely bites of mushroom, water chestnut and carrot.

IMG_4339ed
Coffee Pork Ribs 3/5

Once again we have issue with the serving portion. There are six of us but we were only served 5 pieces of the Coffee Pork Ribs ($15). While the pork ribs was delectable, the coffee taste was barely noticeable.

IMG_4359ed
Pig Trotter with Black Vinegar and Ginger 4/5

It seems like the gang does not really know how to appreciate the Pork Trotter with Black Vinegar and Ginger ($10) except Nicole and me. The class confinement dish with its characteristic sourness from the black vinegar was so addictive that I have to help myself to more of the delish collagen.

IMG_4354ed
Pig Stomach Soup 3.8/5

The piping hot Pig Stomach Soup ($16) was exactly what we needed to warm the body in a cold and rainy night. While the hearty and comforting soup warmed our heart, a dash more peppers should be even more perfect.

IMG_4355ed
Sambal Kang Kong 4/5

The Sambal Kang Kong ($5.50) was stir fried to a delectable crunchy bite and not too oily. A very enjoyable dish.

IMG_4357ed
Otah Omelette 4/5

I just have to order the Otah Omelette ($6). Being both an otah and egg omelette lover, this is just like a pairing made in heaven for me.

IMG_4362ed
Barbequed Cuttlefish 3/5

The tender Barbequed Cuttlefish ($21) was beautifully flavoured with the sweet sauce but I felt that it lacked the smokiness of barbeque. I suspected it was cooked over electric fire instead of charcoal fire.

IMG_4344ed
Claypot Chicken Rice 4/5

IMG_4350ed
Claypot Chicken Rice 4/5

Making our way to Le Chasseur is to try the Claypot Chicken Rice ($11/$20). What is so special about their claypot rice? The restaurant uses basmatic rice, a variety of long grain rice that has an unique aromatic quite similar to pandan. Be prepared to wait for a good 20 minutes as the rice is cooked raw over charcoal fire giving it the charred aromatic infused into the fluffy grains.

IMG_4363ed
Tao Suan 4.2/5

We wrapped up dinner with a bowl of Tao Suan ($2.60 per portion). The version at Le Chasseur is pretty good with the mung beans still retaining a good bite not too mushy. The only complain is the you tiao was not crispy.

Many people who has dined at Le Chasseur knows about the food quality and standard. I really hope their business will pick up and prosper in their new premise. They probably need to do some adjustment to their menu considering they are no more operating in an air conditioned restaurant environment and with more competitive priced stalls in the same food court.
