We began with a selection of small bites, starting with the Duck Rillettes ($9). The slow-cooked duck, shredded and preserved in its own fat, delivered a rich, savoury depth, best enjoyed spread over a crusty baguette. While satisfying, we found ourselves wishing for more bread to match the generous portion of rillettes.

Calamari with Cocktail Sauce 4.8/5

A standout starter was the Calamari with Cocktail Sauce ($10). Lightly battered and fried to a golden crisp, the calamari remained tender within. The accompanying Marie Rose-style cocktail sauce is creamy with a gentle tang, elevating the dish, making it irresistibly moreish.

The Escargots ($12) is a quintessential French staple, featuring half a dozen snails bathed in a fragrant garlic butter sauce. The escargots were clean-tasting, perfumed with the richness of butter and garlic. Once again, extra baguettes would have been welcome to mop up every last bit of the luscious sauce.

Foie Gras 4/5

For something more indulgent, the Foie Gras ($16) offered a decadent experience. The pan-seared duck liver was beautifully caramelised on the outside while retaining a buttery, melt-in-the-mouth interior. Served atop a savoury pancake, it leaned heavily on richness, and a touch of acidity would have helped balance the dish.

Moving on to mains, the Coq au Vin ($16) embodied rustic French comfort. The spring chicken, gently braised in red wine, was tender and infused with deep, savoury flavours, a hearty and satisfying option.

On the side, the Pomme Puree ($5) impressed with its silky-smooth texture and rich buttery finish. It is a simple yet delightful accompaniment that complements the mains perfectly.

The Steak Au Poivre ($22) stands out as one of the best-value steak frites options in the CBD. The no-frills plate features a well-cooked steak coated in a creamy peppercorn sauce, paired with crispy fries. It delivers on flavour and value, making it a compelling choice for a casual French meal in the city.

Desserts continued the classic French theme. The Mont Blanc ($9) layers meringue with light chantilly cream and sweetened chestnut puree, resulting in a nutty, creamy dessert that is indulgent without being overly heavy. The Mousse au Chocolat ($8) keeps things traditional, offering a smooth, airy texture with a deep, dark chocolate profile that will appeal to those who prefer less sweetness. Meanwhile, the Tarte Fine Aux Pommes ($9) provides a lighter finish, with its crisp, buttery pastry topped with thinly sliced caramelised apples and served alongside chantilly cream.

Wine takes centre stage at Les Canons, with a thoughtfully curated list of over 50 French labels spanning regions such as Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, Loire Valley and Rhône Valley. With glasses starting from $8 and bottles kept under $100, the programme encourages diners to enjoy wine as part of an everyday dining experience rather than a special occasion indulgence.

Tarte Fine Aux Pommes 4.2/5

Les Canons evokes a sense of nostalgia, reminiscent of earlier days when accessible French dining spots such as The French Stall, The Black Sheep Cafe and Saveur first introduced many in Singapore to approachable French cuisine. At a time when French cuisine was largely confined to fine-dining establishments, these places reshaped perceptions — much as Les Canons aims to do today.

With its approachable pricing, comforting classics, and easy-going ambience, Les Canons successfully captures the spirit of a Parisian bistro while fitting neatly into the pace of CBD life. It is a welcoming spot for both quick lunches and leisurely dinners, offering a taste of France without the formality.

Cafe Quenino @ Artyzen Hotel Singapore - New Concept: Build Your Table The Way You Like. Any Plates, Any Combination

Set within the stylish enclave of Artyzen Singapore, Cafe Quenino introduces a refreshed dining concept that reimagines Singapore's beloved "tze char" culture in a contemporary Orchard setting. Anchored by the philosophy of "tze char comfort for today's table" and a communal format of "plates for the table, shared your way", the experience encourages diners to curate their own feast from a diverse menu of Southeast Asian flavours.

The ordering format is straightforward and convivial. Guests can choose from 3, 5, or 7 plates, paired with sides depending on the selected tier — much like ordering a spread at a traditional tze char establishment. Dishes span starters, mains, larger plates and desserts, all designed for sharing in the middle of the table.

For our visit, we opted for the 5-plate format, with a balanced spread of 2 appetisers, 2 mains, and 1 dessert.

We started with the Heirloom Tomato Salad, a vibrant medley of coloured tomatoes paired with buffalo mozzarella, basil, shallots and a black vinegar dressing. It was light yet refreshing, whetting the appetite with its bright acidity and clean flavours.

Another starter, the King Salmon Sashimi, impressed with its generous portion and quality. The salmon was fresh and buttery, elevated by chilli and black bean accents, while a squeeze of calamansi added a zesty lift that brought the dish together beautifully.

Moving on to the mains, the Pineapple Assam Prawn delivered robust flavours. The prawns were complemented by cherry tomatoes and okra, all coated in a tangy, spicy tamarind sauce. The balance of sweet, sour, and heat worked harmoniously, highlighting the prawns' natural sweetness.

The Ayam Percik featured half a spring chicken, offering a hearty portion perfect for sharing. The chicken was tender and sat atop a bed of aromatic percik sauce, finished with an onion herb salad that added a fresh contrast.

To complement the mains, we had the Coconut Basmati Rice, which paired especially well with the richly flavoured dishes. The French Fries with Aioli turned out to be a standout — crisp on the outside, fluffy within, and highly addictive. The Garlic Roasted Baby Potato with Curry Leaves offered a more aromatic alternative, with earthy notes enhanced by the fragrance of curry leaves.

Coconut Pandan Burnt Cheesecake 3.8/5

The meal ended with the Coconut Pandan Burnt Cheesecake, a localised take on the classic dessert. Infused with pandan and accompanied by coconut whipped cream and grated coconut gula melaka, it delivered familiar flavours. However, the texture leaned denser than expected, lacking the molten centre that would have elevated the indulgence.

Overall, the new concept at Cafe Quenino successfully captures the essence of communal tze char dining while presenting it in a polished, modern format. The flexibility to mix and match dishes across categories makes it an appealing option for groups, offering both variety and a sense of familiarity with a contemporary twist.

Coucou @ Craig Road - A Charming, Cosy Spot For Authentic Swiss Fare

Known for its Swiss cuisine, Coucou at Craig Road can be easily overlooked amid its louder neighbours. The menu features Swiss staples such as fondue and rösti, complemented by a curated selection of Swiss wines.

Over at Coucou, a great starter to your meal is always the indulgent Malakoff ($12), a traditional dome of Gruyère cheese, deep-fried to form a golden, crusty exterior with a gooey, molten centre.

Fondue à la Truffe et Champagne 4.2/5

One of the biggest drawns of Coucou I would say is the fondues. We tried Fondue à la Truffe et Champagne ($45/pax), a luxurious pot of melted Vacherin Fribourgeois and Gruyère, elevated with truffle and champagne, served with crusty bread. Add-ons like potatoes and pickles are available. Compared to the regular Fondue Moitié-Moitié, the truffle adds an additional depth of flavour. That said, I reckon the simpler version would offer a more profound cheesy and boozy taste.

La Fameuse Salade Coucou 4/5

La Fameuse Salade Coucou ($12) is another staple, often ordered by regulars to balance the richness of the other dishes. It features curly chopped salad tossed in a tart house-made “Grand Père” dressing, a recipe passed down from co-owner Yves’ grandfather.

To complement the rich cheesy starters, crisp Swiss white wine is perfect, or you can opt for a more casual Coucou Sour or Aperol Swifz.

Magnifique Faux-Filet de Boeuf 4.8/5

For mains, we had the Magnifique Faux-Filet de Boeuf ($48), featuring grass-fed striploin aged 55 days, served with the signature Morel Mushroom Sauce. Cooked evenly with a blushing pink centre, the meat had a slight charred crust on the exterior, adding a satisfying bite. The flavour was excellent even without sauce.

On the side was brilliantly executed Le Rösti Classique ($16), fluffy on the inside with a delectably crisped exterior. To accompany the main, we enjoyed a light-bodied Swiss Pinot Noir.

Crème Brûlée XL au Toblerone 3.5/5

Concluding our meal was Crème Brûlée XL au Toblerone, served with an expertly caramelised crust. The chocolate and nutty flavours were comforting, although the texture was slightly grainier than the classic version.

Coucou’s menu is concise but distinctive, serving dishes with a flair unique to the brand. With its cosy ambience and consistently genuine food and service, it’s easy to see why regulars keep coming back for more of their Swiss fare.

Tea Lounge @ Conrad Singapore Orchard - Art of Chocolate, An Indulgent Afternoon of Valrhona-infused Delights

Tea Lounge at Conrad Singapore Orchard has launched a decadent Weekday Afternoon Tea in collaboration with Valrhona, featuring a curated selection of pastries and cocoa-infused creations crafted with Valrhona's signature couverture chocolates.

We started with a warm, creamy, indulgent Hot Chocolate, though a more bittersweet profile might have made for a better opening given the sweets ahead.

Finger Sandwiches

The tier of savoury finger sandwiches was nothing short of elegant and satisfying. The ratio of soft, fluffy bread to fillings was spot on. The Devilled Mimosa Sandwich offered a classic egg mayo filling, while the Cured Cucumber Sandwich delivered a pleasant savoury crunch. The Smoked Salmon Sandwich with Caviar was mouth-filling and luxurious, while the Smoked Roasted Chicken Sandwich leaned more towards a shaved ham sandwich, though still delectable with its tender bite.

Vanilla Moist Layer Cake

The tea cakes and pastries tier showcases some of Valrhona's key couverture chocolates, including Guanaja 70% that goes into making the Vanilla Moist Layer Cake. I learnt that Guanaja 70% is regarded as the world's first intensely bitter chocolate with 70% cocoa, when it was first introduced in 1986!

Crémeux and White Miso Tart

The Crémeux and White Miso Tart stood out the most for me. It features Matcha inspiration, made with Kagoshima matcha and cocoa butter. The savoury white miso tart also draws on umami, reinforcing the creation's Japanese flair. Among the sweets, I thought this had the most balanced sweetness.

Raspberry Crémeux and Coco Biscuit features Opalys 33%, known for its pure white colour and velvety texture. Coconut is infused into the pastry as well, imparting a gentle tropical note. The Hazelnut Travel Cake is a vegan-friendly cake made using Amatika 46%, Valrhona's first vegan couverture. The nuttiness of the cake came through beautifully. Roasted Buckwheat Mandola is created with Hukambi 53% milk chocolate and elevated with a nutty crunch from roasted buckwheat.

Mushrooms Royale and Dark Chocolate Quiche

In between, we were also served Mushrooms Royale and Dark Chocolate Quiche, both of which were among my favourite items. The dark notes of the pastry tart complemented the creamy and savoury filling especially well. The scones are served with clotted cream, salted caramel chocolate jam, strawberry jam, and calamansi curd.

In addition to the Classic Plain, there is also the Manjari 64% Chocolate and Candied Orange Zest Scone. Studded with chunks of luscious Manjari 64% chocolate in every bite, it was delicious enough to enjoy with just the clotted cream.

Sweet Risotto

Sweet Risotto was served à la minute, with a choice of three flavours — dark chocolate, raspberry, and matcha. During our visit, guest Pastry Chef Arief Rusli of Valrhona was in residence at Tea Lounge, and we had the privilege of having him finish our risotto with a pepper-spiked mousse. Its contrasting peppery note offset the milky sweetness of the risotto, creating a more balanced and nuanced finish.

Beyond the existing selection of teas and coffee, you can also customise your own Gryphon tea at a dedicated tea station with a variety of ingredients to choose from.

Art of Chocolate is available Mondays to Fridays from 30 March to 10 July 2026, 12pm to 5pm.

Mary Grace Cafe @ Tras Street - Beloved Filipino Bakery-Café Makes Singapore Debut with Signature Ensaymadas and Comfort Classics

The beloved Filipino bakery-café chain Mary Grace makes its international debut in Singapore with its first overseas outpost along Tras Street. Officially opening on 13 March 2026, the homegrown favourite from the Philippines. With over 140 branches, it brings its signature bakes, comforting Filipino classics, and warm hospitality to our local dining scene. Alongside well-loved staples like Ensaymadas and Cheese Rolls, diners can also look forward to Singapore-exclusive creations.

A must-try is the Mary Grace Ensaymada ($5.50), the brand's signature take on the classic Spanish-Filipino pastry. The brioche is soft, fluffy and buttery, crowned with premium-aged Queso de Bola (Edam cheese) from Holland. Unlike traditional versions, this rendition is lightly toasted, adding a delicate crispness that enhances both texture and aroma, especially bringing out the cheese's richness. There is also a Singapore-exclusive Salted Egg version for those seeking a local twist.

Another exclusive item is the Kaya Pandan Cheese Roll ($5.30). Beyond pastries, the menu also showcases hearty Filipino fare. The Cassava Chips with Onion Dip ($12) are paper-thin and crispy, but the addictive onion dip truly steals the show.

The Angus Beef Tapa ($25.50) showcases a Filipino classic, featuring tender sirloin strips marinated for 24 hours. The sweet-savoury flavours are well-balanced and deeply satisfying. It comes with a choice of garlic or rosemary rice and eggs done your way — we opted for the garlic rice, which was fluffy and fragrant, paired with sunny-side-up eggs that completed the dish nicely.

A highlight among the savoury offerings is the Grilled Chicken Inasal Focaccia ($19.50). The chicken, marinated in a tangy achuete-spiced blend, is grilled to bring out smoky, zesty notes of lemongrass and tamarind. Sandwiched in house-baked focaccia that is crisp on the outside and fluffy within, it delivers both flavour and texture in every bite.

We wrapped up the meal with the Mango Bene ($14.50, petite), a delightful dessert layering crisp meringue, silky custard cream, and fresh mangoes. Slightly frozen at the core, it offers a refreshing, almost ice cream-like finish that is both light and indulgent.

Overall, Mary Grace's Singapore debut delivers a comforting mix of nostalgic Filipino flavours and thoughtful local touches, making it a charming addition to the Tras Street dining scene.
