ICG Chicken & Burger @ Balestier Food Centre - Korean Fried Chicken In Hawker Centre

IMG_0259ed

Newly opened at Balestier Food Centre is ICG Chicken & Burger selling Korean fried chicken. It is quite interesting to note the new trend of international cuisine moving into our hawker scene. The stall sells a variety of fried chicken in different sauces as well as chicken burgers. Its all about chicken here.

IMG_0260ed
Creamy Yangpa Onion Chicken 3.8/5

Marinated for 12 hours and deep fried to crispy, the Creamy Yangpa Onion Chicken ($10/$16) is further topped with fresh onions and a sweet creamy onion sauce. The creamy sauce complements the succulent chicken excellent. This is indeed quite delectable.

IMG_0258ed
Sweet and Spicy Chicken 3/5

The other Korean fried chicken we tried is the Sweet and Spicy Chicken ($8.90/$14). The sauce is on the sweet side instead. I could not really taste the spiciness. Unlike the creamy yangpa onion chicken, the sauce did not go as well with the fried chicken.

IMG_0262ed
Super Tongsal Chicken Burger 3.5/5

Besides the boneless fried chicken, we also tried its Super Tongsal Chicken Burger ($5.50). We all agreed that it tasted quite like MacDonald's chicken burger. It even look similar isn't it? The chicken patty is actually quite good, crispy and juicy.

Buta Kin @ Beauty World Food Centre - Cheap Japanese Ramen at $6.90 And Below

IMG_0265ed

When I heard that there was a new ramen stall at Beauty World Food Centre, I gathered a few foodie friends to check out to check out the stall. Buta Kin at Beauty World Food Centre offers 5 types of ramen/udon dishes and 4 different Japanese curry dishes on their menu with most items not more than $6. Sounds like a steal isn't it? Let's us find out whether the taste matches up to the price.

IMG_0273ed
Special Tonkotsu Ramen 3/5

The most expensive item on the menu is the Special Tonkotsu Ramen ($6.90). Diner has a choice of either ramen and udon. The bowl of ramen comes with 3 slices of pork belly, black fungus, half boiled egg and seaweed. Why the ingredients are generous, the taste was rather lacklustre. The broth lacked the robustness of good tonkotsu soup based. It felt more like have a bowl of Chinese La Mian instead.

IMG_0276ed
Tonkotsu Black 2.8/5

Same goes to the Tonkotsu Black ($6) which comes with a slice of char siew and black fungus, it is disappointing. This is not Japanese ramen at all. Both the noodles and soup is way of the mark of the standard ramen.

IMG_0269ed

While the presentation and price of the Japanese ramen is very attractive, the taste was a let down. Unless you are satisfy with just a bowl of average la mian disgusted as Japanese ramen at a reasonable low price, I would advise giving this a miss.

The turkey is wrapped with strips of bacon and slow-roasted over maple wood. The essence of the bacon is infused into the tender turkey meat, capped with the unami flavour that is complemented with the smoked aroma of Maple wood. The huge bird is served with sides of charcoal baked potatoes, winter vegetables, mushroom stuffing and giblet gravy.

IMG_0186ed

Sweeten your celebrations with the Buche de Noel White Yule Log ($68 for 1kg) which compromises a moist red velvet sponge layered with lemon curd, sheathed beneath a beautiful layer of cheese frosting that is well balanced and not overwhelming.

Crowne Plaza Changi Airport

IMG_0189ed

At Crowne Plaza Changi Airport, ring in the festivity with the Traditional Roast Turkey with Chestnut Stuffing served with Cranberry Sauce ($158 for 5kg). Good for eight pax, the turkey is stuffed with finest ingredients such as foie gras, veal and chestnut. Impress your guest further with the flavourful Three-Cheese Chicken Roulade ($88 for 1.5kg). The chicken leg roulade, baked to golden brown comes with the combination of the boursin, red cheddar and smoked havarti cheese.

IMG_0192ed

Not to forget a must on the table to celebrate the holiday season is the a buche de Noel. A good choice is the Manjari Chocolate & Caremel Chestnut Yule Log Cake ($68) made up of rich, moist and decadent chocolate cake rolled up around a luscious and creamy caramel chestnut filling, and artfully crafted to resemble a log from an enchanted forest and garnished with seasonal decorations.

Holiday Inn Orchard City Centre

IMG_0184ed

Holiday Inn Orchard City Centre brings to you a collection of traditional and contemporary for the festive celebration with the Signature Tandoori Turkey and Festive Roast Turkey. The signature tandoori turkey is marinated with aromatic Indian spices and accompanied with masala potatoes. For the festive roast turkey, it is served with chestnut stuffing, thyme sauce and cranberry relish.

IMG_0183ed

On the sweet side, there is the Salted Caramel Chocolate Log Cake filled with chocolate ganache and homemade sea salted caramel. On top of that both adults and kids will be delighted with the Red Velvet White Chocolate Chip Cookies with a generous serving of white chocolate chunks in mildly sweet red velvet cookies.

Festive delights not to be missed at Holiday Inn Atrium are the Roasted Aromatic Spices Tom Turkey with Chestnut Stuffing, Baked Gammon Ham with Sarawak Honey Pineapple Glaze ($108 for 3kg) and Oven Baked Australian Ribeye with Nutty Crust and Yorkshire Pudding.

Hotel Indigo

IMG_0210ed

Paying homage to Katong’s Peranakan influences, Baba Chews’ takeaway menu (3 days pre-order) is a selection of festive must-haves with a Nonya twist created by Head Chef Alvin Leong. The Turkey Breast ‘Sio’ ($88) is a creative spin on the ubiquitous festive turkey and ‘Itek Sio’, the Nonya braised duck. In the place of a whole turkey, a 2kg turkey breast is slow-baked at 80°c for 90 minutes with tamarind and coriander seasoning to ensure tender, well-flavoured cuts of the meat.

IMG_0203ed

Wrapping up the takeaway menu are the classic Chocolate Christmas Log Cake ($72 for 1kg) and the Williams Pear Log Cake ($72 for 1kg) made of pear mousse, almond jaconde glazed with a calamansi jello for those favouring a different flavour.

Melt Cafe @ Mandarin Oriental Hotel Singapore - Unlimited Servicing Of Sashimi, Sushi And Many Other Japanese Fare

IMG_0341ed

Just right before the onset of the festive season, Melt Cafe at Mandarin Oriental decided to celebrate the last bit of the year with a Japan Food Fair. Diners of Melt Cafe get to enjoy a wider selection of Japanese food specially prepared for a limited period of time from 23 November to 4 December 2016 (dinner only). For a complete experience, there is even sake to complement the promotion. That is rather rare for a buffet setting.

IMG_0357ed

IMG_0355ed
Sashimi 4.5/5

Start off your meal with a plate of fresh Sashimi. If you like hamachi, theirs won't disappoint you with the thick cuts. I like their cute little triangular California roll with tobiko which has a balance of  the vinegary rice and sweet filling.

IMG_0364ed
Ebi Tempura Hand Roll 4.2/5

Upon request, hand rolls are made ala minute to ensure that the seaweed is still crispy when delivered into your mouth. Especially for their Ebi Tempura Hand Roll. The ebi tempura was still warm when I had it. The crust was crispy and the ebi remained firm and succulent.

IMG_0365ed
Pork and Chicken Katsu Curry 4.2/5

What I really want to highlight is the Japanese curry station which offers both Pork and Chicken Katsu Curry. The light and airy batter seems to have successfully locked in all the juice of the meats, resulting in an extremely tender and moist texture. It was such an indulgence to have an entire onsen egg to glaze over the mini curry don with its creamy egg yolk. What I regretted not doing there and then, was to ask for another scoop of the curry - robust with a spike of fiery, this curry don is certainly one of the most memorable so far.

IMG_0366ed

Melt cafe is also popular for their Indian cuisine. Their live nann station, serving fresh garlic and cheese naan are the best companions for the selection of curries and tandoori. Their curries were complexities with multitude of spices and ingredients. Despite finding them relatively creamy, I find it hard to stop after a few spoonful of it.

IMG_0351ed
Green Tea Swiss Roll 4.2/5

IMG_0345ed
Green Tea Yuzu Cake 4/5

During this Japanese Fest, there are a few unique desserts specially crafted for the occasion. There are the standard Green Tea Swiss Roll as well as the Green Tea Yuzu Cake. While the latter has a interesting tangy twist to its matcha flavour, I still prefer the simpler pure green tea swiss roll which exudes its matcha elegance.

IMG_0346ed
Melt Chocolate Cake 4.2/5

Never walk away without a slice of Melt Chocolate Cake- moist and spongy with bitter sweetness. This is one of the ultimate chocolate cakes to have. The other humble looking classic pandan cake may surprise you with its comforting pandan aroma and sweetness.

IMG_0370ed
Homemade Ice Creams 4.2/5

Last but not least, their Homemade Ice Creams. The sweetness of ice creams usually make your throat stick but theirs are almost thirst quenching.  My favourites are their yogurt, strawberry, chocolate etc... Almost all flavours! Just choose all to pair with your Green tea waffles.

Available only for 2 weeks before the advent of the Christmas season, do make a date with Melt cafe soon!

Yentafo Kruengsonge @ Cathay Cineleisure Orchard - Thai Style Yong Tau Fu

20161116_184502_HDR

For years, our repertoire for Thai cuisine is pretty much confined to the realm of Pha Thai, Papaya Salad, Tom Yum Soup etc. Till lately we got acquainted with Thai Boat Noodles but now there's Thai Yong Tau Fu! Yentafo Kruengsonge by Madam A. Mallikaun, a renown Bangkok ‘yen ta fo’ (as the Thais knows it) noodle chain, with 28 outlets in Bangkok and 2 in Laos. It has set up its first Singapore outpost at Cineleisure Orchard.

20161116_193902_HDR

Kruengsonge; which refers to a selection of the best ingredients in one big bowl. The brand’s distinctive rooster earthenware containing the rice noodles and a myriad of ingredients in a light broth, pinkish with a savoury-sweet ‘yen ta fo’ sauce. Hence it is also known as ‘pink noodle soup’ which is the character of Madam A. Mallikaun’s ‘yen ta fo’. What draws people to her place is essentially her signature pink sauce which is made with fermented red tofu and cooked Thai red rice. Imagine mixing a piece of Chinese fermented beancurd into your porridge...

20161116_191418_HDR
Kratong Tong 2.5/5

We started off with some appetisers that really got our jaws moving. Kratong Tong ($5 for 6 pc) reminiscent of our Kueh Pai Tee – deep-fried pastry shells filled with stir-fried minced chicken, carrots, peas and corn. They tasted like chicken pie but accented with strong peppery taste due to the aromatics of the coriander root.

20161116_191334_HDR
Kao Tung Rice Crisps 3/5

Instead of the usual candied version with sweet, caramelised sugarcane glaze, their Kao Tung Rice Crisps ($6 for 4 pc) is an exquisite, savoury version. Its nutty signature dip made with minced chicken and red curry paste makes the otherwise flavourless and pale rice crisp moreish and alluring .

20161116_193654_HDR
Yentafo Kruengsonge Soup, Non Spicy 3.8/5

Moving on to their specialties, four choices of 'yen ta fo’ are showcased on the menu in Singapore. Simply pick their Yentafo Kruengsonge Soup ($8.50) which you get to try all the 8 items such as fish ball, squid ball, fish ball with tofu, fried tofu, fried seasoned taro and black fungus mushroom, paired with rice noodles in Madam Mallika’s quintessential broth and pink sauce. The broth, pink sauce and Kangkong are specially imported from Thailand. I like the Thai Kang Kong. Although they are much thicker, they add a refreshing crunch to the dish. You may be wandering what is that piece of grass jelly doing in my Yong Tau Fu? Back in Thailand, Pig's blood is one of the quintessential ingredients in Yen Ta Fu. To keep the tradition, grass jelly is adopted to symbolise that significant curd. Much consideration has been given to the colour, shape and texture when choosing the supplier. How cool is that!

20161116_195803_HDR
Dry Yentafo Kruengsonge, Spicy 4/5

Similar to Thailand, customers can opt for three levels of spiciness for their choice of ‘yen ta fo’ - ‘Dek-Dek’ (not spicy), ‘Jai-Soh’ (spicy) and ‘Rod-Jeb’ (screaming spicy). Like an authentic Italian restaurant, you won't see any other spices or condiments on the table as Madam A. Mallikaun believes that her version of pink noodles is robust enough to go with sauces. Their dry version ($8.50) attests to that. We had ours ‘Jai-Soh’ (spicy) with a teaspoon of the chilli. It gives the noodles a fiery and tangy kick which was lacking in our non-spicy soup. Spicy is highly recommended for both version!

20161116_202436_HDR
Original Tom Yum Noodles 4/5

And by all means, give their Original Tom Yum Noodles ($9) a try. Made using the same broth base, they serve up a relatively sweeter tom yum soup that is more rounded in flavour. Fresh lemon juice is used in place of vinegar, whetting your taste buds with a citrusy kind of tanginess, instead hitting you with sharp vinegary notes. For something less stimulating, you can opt for their classic Kway Teow Kruengsonge ($8.50), a Thai-style clear soup noodle with six toppings. Knowing that the imported broth, which forms the base of all soup dishes here, is made from simmering pork bone, radish and coriander root, I'm certain that even their clear soup noodles will be as satisfying as the Yen Ta Fu. Both are available in soup and dry.

20161116_202255_HDR
Nam Prik Khai Poo 4/5

Their menu also features a few unique Thai rice dishes, in which Nam Prik Khai Poo ($9) may caught your attention with its crab dip made with fresh crab meat and cooked egg yolk. Personally I like my vegetables to be simply blanched, hence this dish sits very well with me (apart from the oily and flat omelette atop of my rice). The dip is a balance of sweet, spicy and sour. The 3 signature flavours of Thai cuisine. What needs to be improved is perhaps its portion. Reminiscent of a decadent salted egg crab, eat your vegetables if you want to savour the essence of the plate!

20161116_202345_HDR
Gai Pad Krapow 3.5/5

Gai Pad Krapow ($8.50) may set your stomach on fire. Putting the heat level aside, which ironically some of you may find it hard to stop. I quite enjoy the strong flavour of the Thai holy basil infused in the minced chicken.

20161116_205219_HDR
Santol Sweety Delight 3.5/5

Not just the mains, Yentafo Kruengsonge also introduces us a range of different traditional Thai desserts. After all the heat and spice, wash them down with Santol Sweety Delight ($5). With flesh too tart to consume on its own, the Thais simmers this cotton fruit in sugar until it is soft, ingeniously turning it into a refreshing dessert.

20161116_205151_HDR
Nam-Wa Banana 3.8/5

I like their Nam-Wa Banana in Coconut Milk with Sesame Seeds ($5) just as much, or perhaps more - There is a lot more play of flavours and textures in it. Compared to the cavendish bananas which soften under heat, these specially-imported Nam-Wa bananas that are grown in the central and North-eastern parts of Thailand, remain firm after being cooked. The freshly-squeezed coconut cream has a light consistency with caramelised sweetness from the palm sugar. Each bite was aromatic with nuttiness from the toasted sesame seeds, along with a touch of salt that complements its mellowness.

20161116_204944_HDR
Ka-Nom Tuay 3/5

Ka-Nom Tuay - a traditional steamed coconut custard. The sweet coconut flavour is a taste of nostalgia.

20161116_184409_HDR

In Bangkok, one may find it hard to identify the real Yentafo Kruengsonge by Madam A. Mallikaun as there are a handful of other brands around selling the same thing. However, since this is the first and only in Singapore, there's no way that you will mistaken it, especially with their trademark rooster earthenware. Comfort food priced reasonably, I'm quite sure this Thai Yen Ta Fo will make it mark here in no time.
