Beautiful To Sea 4.2/5, Dirty Little Pina Colada 4.2/5, Seaside Sangria 4/5

To kick off our dining experience, we indulged in some expertly crafted cocktails while savouring the gorgeous sea view. The "Beautiful To Sea" cocktail ($21/glass) combines vodka, kyoho grape liqueur, lemon juice, sugar, and lychee, creating a refreshing and fruity concoction. For those seeking a tropical twist, the "Dirty Little Pina Colada" ($23/glass) presents a delightful mix of dark rum, honey pineapple juice, vanilla sugar, and coconut cream. Lastly, the "Seaside Sangria" ($16/glass) is a vibrant ensemble of white wine, rum, peach liqueur, orange juice, green apple, and strawberries, promising a perfect harmony of flavours to complement the seaside ambience.

Photo 2-12-23, 6 25 02 PM
Lemongrass Wings 4/5

We tried the Lemongrass Wings ($16/6pcs), a tempting offering of six deep-fried chicken wings marinated with lemongrass. The infusion of lemongrass imparts a fragrant and citrusy note to the wings, creating a unique and aromatic experience. To elevate the taste, these delectable wings are served with a homemade spicy dip, adding an extra kick to every bite.

Photo 2-12-23, 6 25 54 PM
Butter Garlic Prawns 4/5

A recommended starter was the Butter Garlic Prawns ($22), which features head-on prawns cooked to perfection in a flavourful garlic and butter broth. Served alongside crispy sourdough toast, this dish promises a harmonious blend of succulent prawns and the rich, aromatic essence of garlic and butter.

Photo 2-12-23, 6 25 20 PM

Our favourite is the Grilled Pork Skewers ($16/6pcs), which features marinated pork skewers and a delectable homemade spicy dip. The succulent pork, grilled to perfection, is complemented by the tantalising heat and zest of the spicy dip.

Photo 2-12-23, 6 25 42 PM
Seasonal Squid 4.2/5

Elevate your dining experience with the must-try Seasonal Squid ($22). The squid is expertly pan-seared to perfection, showcasing its seasonal freshness. Served with a homemade spicy dip to add an extra layer of flavour to the dish.

Photo 2-12-23, 6 25 39 PM
Seafood Linguine 3.8/5

We tried the Seafood Linguine ($18), a delectable pasta dish with a rich and cheesy base and a medley of succulent prawns, clams, and squid. Topped with crispy herbed bread crumbs, the linguine was perfectly cooked to al dente, adding a satisfying texture to the overall dish.

Photo 2-12-23, 6 24 54 PM
Smashed Beef Burger 4.2/5

The Smashed Beef Burger ($24) features double smashed beef patties, complemented by homemade sauce, onions, and cheddar cheese. This flavourful ensemble is served alongside a generous portion of fries.

The Fisherman’s Tray ($170), available exclusively from Friday to Sunday, is a delightful sharing platter that features a whole lobster, seasonal live whole fish, and clams bathed in a flavorful cajun sauce. This sumptuous seafood ensemble is complemented by a selection of assorted vegetables, making it a perfect choice for those who appreciate a variety of ocean-fresh delights.

Greenhouse @ Dusit Thani Laguna Singapore - Multi-ethnic Cuisine Served All Day From Five Show Kitchens

GreenHouse5

At Dusit Thani Laguna Singapore, Greenhouse is an all-day dining multi-ethnic restaurant anchored by five show kitchens. The beautiful restaurant is clad in lush greenery and bountiful botany, with an unobstructed view of the golf course.

GreenHouse3
Tom Yum Goong 4.2/5

From the Thai kitchen, we started with Tom Yum Goong ($24++) packed with the characteristic Thai sweet, sour and spicy flavours. It even comes with huge river prawns. The authentic taste makes me miss my trips to Bangkok.

GreenHouse29
Phad Thai Phak 4/5

Another staple Thai dish on the menu is the Phad Thai Phak ($25++). The stir-fried rice noodles with tamarind sauce are nested in an egg nest, paired with broccolini and beansprouts. I am glad they do a wet version, which is also not too sweet—precisely the way I preferred.

GreenHouse33
Khao Niao Mamuang 4.2/5

We had our favourite Thai dessert to complete the Thai food section. The Khao Niao Mamuang ($12) comes in trio-coloured glutinous rice - blue pea, pulut hitam and pandan paired with sweet mango.

GreenHouse8
Binchotan Robata Sanchoku Wagyu Beef 4.8/5

From the Japanese kitchen, we had the Binchotan Robata Sanchoku Wagyu Beef MS 6/7 ($38++). The chunky wagyu is extremely tender and juicy, grilled to a delectable smokiness.

GreenHouse18
Corn Fed Coquelet Tandoori 4.2/5

Diners craving traditional Punjabi Tandoor cuisine will enjoy the Corn Fed Coquelet Tandoori ($36) paired with freshly baked naan. I enjoyed the succulent chicken marinated in yoghurt and spices that has been roasted to perfection.

GreenHouse31
Kurobuta Pork $30

For something closer to my heart is the Sweet & Sour Kurobuta Pork ($30) from the Chinese kitchen. It is meaty and juicy coated in a delightful sweet and sour sauce comprising tomato, Chinese rice wine vinegar and plum sauce. Worth noting is the addition of lychee, giving it a fruity, sweet finishing.

Personally, I love the space at the restaurant and am impressed with the food at Greenhouse. Unfortunately, the restaurant is very inaccessible. Unless you drive, if not even taking public transport, you still need to walk quite a bit from the main road to the restaurant. I would recommend taking the MRT to Expo MRT station and taking a cab or private hired car to the restaurant.

House of Happiness @ Simpang Bedok - The Heart Attack Pork Lard With Bacon, Furikake And Onsen Egg Claypot Rice Is To Die For

HouseOfHappiness20

House of Happiness located at Simpang Bedok is a modernized claypot rice concept by the folks behind Mr Lor Bak. Realising that the number of claypot rice stalls were dwindling and customers are not willing to wait for more than 30 minutes for the rice to be cooked from scratch, House of Happiness has developed an unique method to shorten the cooking process as well as doing a part in preserving Singapore's heritage through their interpretation of  claypot rice dishes.

HouseOfHappiness2
Lor Bak with Onsen Egg 4/5

It's inevitable that the signature Lor Bak has to be featured in their claypot rice. This is what made them famous. The Lor Bak with Onsen Egg ($7) is served in an individual claypot which is good for one pax consumption. Having tried their lor bak back at the Ubi outlet, I am glad to say the consistency is still there. For those that have not tried Mr Lor Bak's lor bak before, the braising sauce has a stronger herbal taste with a slight bitterness.

HouseOfHappiness6
Assorted Mushrooms with Baby Bok Choy 4/5

The thoughtful eatery even offers a vegetarian claypot rice in the Assorted Mushrooms with Baby Bok Choy ($7). The natural sweetness from the oyster and shimeji mushrooms, together with the dark sauce made from red bean, shaoxing wine and garlic pairs excellently together with the cooked rice.

HouseOfHappiness13
16 Hour Slow Cooked Teriyaki Pork Jowl 4.2/5

A crowd favourite is the 16 Hour Slow Cooked Teriyaki Pork Jowl ($7) which comes with pork cheek slices that have been sous vide for 16 hours, marinated in teriyaki sauce and pan seared. What I enjoyed is the tender pork jowl that comes with a delightful crunchy bite.

HouseOfHappiness21
Pork Lard with Bacon, Furikake and Onsen Egg 4.5/5

My favourite is the Pork Lard with Bacon, Furikake and Onsen Egg Claypot Rice ($7). The sight of pork lard crowning the claypot rice already made me drool. Every mouthful of this has many beautiful flavours and textures at play which is irresistible not to go back for more.

HouseOfHappiness22
Onsen Egg with Ikura and Toriko 3.8/5

Influenced by the Japanese cuisine is the Onsen Egg with Ikura and Toriko ($11). Besides the vibrant colour and its popping surprises with each mouthful of rice, I find the seafood flavours of the ikura and toriko kind of distorted the balance in flavours. The hipster diners may like it but this is my less favourite.

HouseOfHappiness12
12 Hour Braised Pork Trotter 4.2/5

Besides the claypot rice, you may want to order some extra dishes to go along with it. I tried the 12 Hour Braised Pork Trotter ($8) which was both fatty and tender, absorbing the delicious braising sauce. The braising sauce is lighter and sweeter compare to the lor bak.

I like the claypot rice concept by House of Happiness. I think they have injected something new to a heritage dish, giving it a new lease of life to capture the appetite of the new generation as well as giving the old generation something new to try but not forgetting the fundamental of a good pot of rice.

Eng's Char Siew Wanton Mee @ East Village - The Claypot Rice Is More Popular Than The Wanton Mee

IMG_4415

This may sounds a bit weird but I am at Eng's Char Siew Wanton Mee for claypot rice and not wanton mee. Yes, the East Village outlet sells claypot rice and some zichar dishes on top of their signature wanton mee with hot fiery chilli sauce. The outlet at East Village is franchised by Ah Ching the ex-chef of Geylang Claypot Rice. Hence the used of the name Eng's Char Siew Wanton Mee, selling wanton mee alongside his claypot rice. This is the only place where you can get both wanton mee and claypot rice.

IMG_4414
Charcoal Cooked Claypot Rice 4/5

The Charcoal Cooked Claypot Rice ($7/$13/$23) uses old grains here. It is cooked from scratch, first over the gas stove for the rice grains to dry up and then transfer over to the charcoal stove, cooking for another 25 minutes together with the ingredients and sauce. The whole cooking process takes about 45 minutes. Hence be prepared to wait if you did not pre-order before turning up at the outlet.

IMG_4421

During my visit, almost every table was having the claypot rice. Two things stood out for me in the claypot rice. First the chicken is very tender and the portion is quite substantial. Most of the time when I visit other claypot rice stalls, I have to request to any more chicken but I do not need to do so here. Second is the crispy brown rice grains at the bottom of the claypot. Ah Ching has developed a technique that allows him to get that crispy consistency at the bottom. While I enjoyed the claypot rice, I felt it somewhat lacked the robust flavours compared to other well known claypot places. Maybe the savoury dark sauce is not fragrant enough or it needs a further boast in flavours such as addition of salted fish or more flavourful Chinese sausages.

IMG_4418
French Beans 4/5

As there is basically no vegetable in the claypot rice, we decided to order a plate of French Beans ($7/$9) to go along with the rice. It is simple but well executed with a delightful crunch.

IMG_4408
Claypot Pork Knuckles 4/5

Besides the claypot rice, we also had the Claypot Pork Knuckles which was the special of the day. The pork knuckles which has absorbed the essence of the braising sauce, was fatty and juicy. Perfect to go along with my claypot rice.

If you are planning to try the claypot rice here, I would recommend calling the outlet to pre-order the clayot rice first. If not, you must be prepared to wait for around 45 minutes as the claypot rice needs to be cooked from scratch. While waiting you may want to have a plate of wanton mee then.

Alhambra Padang Satay @ New Upper Changi Road - New Outlet In The East Serving Malay Style Satay

Alhambra13

Fans of Alhambra Padang Satay will be glad to know that it has opened a new outlet in the East at Blk 56 New Upper Changi Road. Alhambra Padang Satay is a household name selling Malay style satay. It has taken part in many major food events such as World Street Food Congress and Singapore Day.

Alhambra14

From what I understand, the stall started as a road side stall beside the Alhambra Theatre at Beach Road, before being re-located to the now defunct Satay Club at Elizabeth Walk.  As far as I know, the satay is still freshly made using the same recipe handed down by the current stall owner's father.

Alhambra11
Chicken Satay 4.2/5

I ordered the Chicken Satay, Mutton Satay and Duck Satay, 5 sticks each, and a ketupat. It cost me $12.50. Among the three types of satay, my favourite is the Chicken Satay. The chicken satay was juicy and tender. It even comes with with chicken skin elevating the whole aroma and enjoyment.

Alhambra9
Mutton Satay 3/5, Duck Satay 3/5

For the Mutton Satay, I enjoyed the aromatic spices in the marination but I thought it was too sweet for my liking. Saying so, the mutton was very tender. Something different on the menu is the Duck Satay, which you probably can't find it elsewhere. The duck satay was grilled to a nice tender texture but I thought the natural flavour was lost in the marination.

Alhambra3
Ketupat 4/5

A worthy note to mention is their Ketupat. It is not a significantly thing but at least the stall made the effort to serve me a warm and moist ketupat.

Jin Ji Teochew Braised Duck (金记潮州卤鸭) @ New Upper Changi Road - New Stall In The East

JinJiBaisedDuck3

Jin Ji Teochew Braised Duck (金记潮州卤鸭) has come a long way since 1980 at Smith Street Food Centre. It has expanded its business and recently opened a new outlet at New Upper Changi Road, bringing its traditional Teochew braised duck dishes to the East.

JinJiBaisedDuck6
Braised Duck Bento Set 4/5

Food has to evolve with time and Jin Ji Teochew Braised Duck is probably the first stall to introduce the Braised Duck Bento Set ($8) in Singapore. The bento set comes with 3 ball-shaped yam rice, braised duck. offals, salted vegetables, cucumber, radish and lava egg. You may called it gimmicky but I think it is smart thinking of re-packaging a traditional dish and giving it a refreshed look. I guess it turned out successful as it got quite a fair bit of attention from the media.

JinJiBaisedDuck5

The new stall was slightly more than a week old when I visited for dinner. I could not really fault the yam rice, tender braised duck and the lava egg. However, I thought the offals were not braised long enough, failing to absorb the richness of the braising sauce.

JinJiBaisedDuck9
Kway Chap Set 3/5

JinJiBaisedDuck13

Besides the bento set, I also ordered the Kway Chap Set ($4) to try. Once again, and you probably can tell from the color, the ingredients do not seen to have braised long enough to absorb the richness of the braising sauce. Th rice sheet was also on the thicker side and the accompanying broth tasted rather bland. This is not the usual standard I know of, probably it needed more time to smooth out the whole operations and quality consistency of the products.

Bedok Corner Hokkien Prawn Mee @ Bedok Corner Food Centre - A Delicious Plate Of Goodness

IMG_1424

For someone staying in the West, Bedok Corner Food Centre is somewhere I hardly venture to in the far East. Little do I know much about the hawker centre except for the Cheng Tng stall. Without any clue what else is good at the hawker centre, I decided to try Bedok Corner Hokkien Prawn Mee which has a queue.

IMG_1425
Hokkien Prawn Mee

A plate of the Hokkien Prawn Mee ($4/$5) comes with squid, prawn, beansprouts, egg and pork lard. Most hokkiem mee stalls use a mix of yellow noodle and thick beehoon but over here, the stall uses the thin beehoon. Without a good control of the wok, it is easy to get the beehoon burnt. Hence I really have to applaud the skill of the stall owner.

IMG_1428

The other reason why I like about the use of the thinner beenhoon is that it can absorb the stock better. Every strand of the noodles seem to be coated with the sweet robust stock. However for the chilli, I am not a fan of it. I think it can be better.

IMG_1432

The other thing I like about the plate of hokkien prawn me is their fried egg, buried together with the pile of noodles. The aroma of the fried egg provides the extra oomph to the whole dimension of the dish.

IMG_1430

Overall, this is a good plate of hokkien prawn mee. I am glad that my trip to the far East was not wasted. I really enjoy the plate of wet and flavoursome hokkien prawn mee.
