Tan Xiang Yuan @ Dickson Road - A Seafood Hotpot Haven and Chinese Delights By Actor Ben Yeo

Yuan-4

Nestled within a charming two-storey shophouse along Dickson Road, Tan Xiang Yuan offers a delightful array of Chinese dishes, opened by actor and host Ben Yeo. While their signature seafood hotpot steals the spotlight, the restaurant also presents a diverse selection of Chinese cooked dishes that are sure to tantalize your taste buds.

Yuan14

Yuan7
Signature Seafood Hotpot 4/5

The centerpiece of Tan Xiang Yuan is their Signature Seafood Hotpot ($98/$188), a culinary masterpiece that is served over a charcoal fire. The broth, simmered for eight hours with prawn shells, old hen, and pork bones, exudes a rich and sweet flavor that is packed with seafood goodness. Sliced fish, yam, prawns, abalone, scallops, and more adorn the hotpot, creating a seafood extravaganza that will leave you craving for more.

Yuan1
Black Vinegar Pork Trotter Jelly 3/5

For a modern twist on a traditional favorite, the Black Vinegar Pork Trotter Jelly ($6) takes the stage. These mini sphere-shaped delights offer a unique and delicate rendition of the classic Teochew pig's trotter jelly, although the portion size may leave you longing for more.

Yuan22

Yuan26
Mao Shan Wang Durian Chilli Crab Ball 4/5

Prepare for a surprising combination with the Mao Shan Wang Durian Chilli Crab Ball ($12/pc), an appetizer that encases the bold flavors of durian and chili crab in a crispy shell. This unusual fusion surprisingly works, creating a burst of flavors that will intrigue your taste buds.

Yuan37
Handmade Fish Curd with Luffa Melon 2.5/5

Unfortunately, not all dishes at Tan Xiang Yuan live up to expectations. The Handmade Fish Curd with Luffa Melon ($20/$30/$40), while comprising luffa, handmade fish curd, black fungus, carrot, and mushroom, fell short in terms of flavor. It lacked seasoning, leaving a bland impression on the palate.

Yuan29
Signature Fried Rice 2.8/5

The Signature Fried Rice ($22/$33/$44), a staple dish in any Chinese restaurant, also failed to impress. With its lackluster taste and ordinary presentation, it did not meet the expectations one would have for a restaurant of this caliber.

Yuan16
Hand Drizzled Roast Chicken 4.2/5

However, Tan Xiang Yuan redeems itself with their Hand Drizzled Roast Chicken ($26 Half/ $48 Whole), a dish that showcases the artistry of drizzling hot oil over the chicken to achieve a crispy skin while keeping the meat tender and juicy. The result is a flavorful and satisfying poultry indulgence.

Yuan32
Signature Beef Cubes 4.2/5

To spice things up, the Signature Beef Cubes ($26/$39/$52) stir-fried in a piquant black pepper sauce take the spotlight. The succulent meat, infused with the aromatic black pepper, creates a mouthwatering symphony of flavors that will leave you craving for more.

Overall, Tan Xiang Yuan at Dickson Road offers a memorable dining experience with its show-stopping seafood hotpot and a mix of Chinese dishes. While some dishes may fall short of expectations, the restaurant's highlights shine through, making it a worthwhile destination for seafood lovers and Chinese cuisine enthusiasts alike.

A good choice is the Assorted Meat Platter (market price) if you need help deciding what to go for. It comprises three different types of beef and pork. Premium choices include Japanese A5 Wagyu, Japanese A4 Wagyu, Japanese Wagyu Beef Shank and Snowflakes Wagyu Beef.

BlackKnight5

BlackKnight4

There is also fresh seafood on the menu Scallops, Bamboo Clams, Live Prawns, Crab, Lobster, Oyster and Abalone. The Handmade Shrimp Paste topped with ebiko is a must-have. It has a delightful crunchy texture when it is cooked.

BlackKnight27
Black Truffle Fried Rice

Black Knight Hotpot even offers cooked dishes on its menu, unlike other hotpot restaurants. Qi Xiang Hot Pot @ The Chevrons - Popular Chicken Pot In Kovan, Opens New Hotpot Restaurant In The West

QiXiangHotPot-2

Qi Xiang Hot Pot at The Chevrons is proudly brought to you by the team behind Qi Xiang Chicken Pot. Known for its unique beer-infused chicken pots, the restaurant also uses traditional claypots, and what you get is one of Singapore's first-ever yuan yang claypot options. What's more, it opens till 3am daily!

IMG_2512

The restaurant will also be offering free-flow drinks, fruits and condiments for $5 per pax. Among the various condiments, be sure to get its in-house special chilli sauce, which is full of zing and adds a fiery kick to every bite.

IMG_2573
Pumpkin Soup 4.8/5

Soup bases options include its Signature Broth ($29.90 for full or half pot) which has brought them to fame, but I chose other two which complement each other - a soul comforting and nourishing Pumpkin Soup ($29.90 for full or half pot), juxtaposing a piquant and zingy Green Pepper Sauerkraut Dory Fish Pot ($37.90 for full pot, $20.80 for half pot). The Pumpkin Soup takes more than 5 hours to be ready, and supposedly rich in chicken and pork collagen. That was quite evident in the deep chicken flavour underneath the sweet pumpkin note. You can even amp up the chicken broth by pairing it with Qi Xiang Hotpot’s Famed Boiled Chicken ($9.90 for half chicken or quarter thigh meat options, $15.90 for whole chicken).

IMG_2546
Green Pepper Sauerkraut Dory Fish Pot 4.8/5

On the other hand, the latter was highly stimulating with a broth cooked with herbaceous peppercorns, ginger, sour mustard leaves, and laced with chilli oil. I like this version versus a full-blown mala soup. It gives that pleasant peppercorn aroma and a fiery kick without the greasiness. What's interesting is the addition of dory fish to emulate the concept of sliced fish bee hoon.

IMG_2551
Japanese Wagyu Beef

IMG_2554
Iberico pork

The menu features over 80 delectable options, including premium shabu shabu meat featuring Australian Wagyu Beef ($49.90 for full portion, $24.90 for half portion) and Japanese Wagyu Beef ($135.90 for 300g, $67.90 for 150g). Of course, there is seafood as well, such as prawns and Tioman fish slices.

IMG_2529
Smoke Infused Duck Breast Braised in Szechuan Sauce 4.5/5

But what jazz up this hotpot menu is its range of sides. For instance, this Smoke Infused Duck Breast Braised in Szechuan Sauce ($18.90) is a rather well-considered dish prepared through the precise cooking methods of being braised, sous-vide, then tea smoked with umami-packed house-made Szechuan sauce. I love the fats that lace around the meat, which made each slice tender and succulent.

IMG_2537
XO Homemade Carrot Cake 3.8/5

If you like deep-fried carrot cake, you may find this XO Homemade Carrot Cake ($10.90) sinfully good. Each chunk of carrot cake is turned into a crispy morsel tossed with crispy egg bits, beansprouts and spring onions, dressed in dollops of XO sauce.

IMG_2535
Prawn Pizza 4/5

Another delectable bite is this crowd-pleasing Prawn Pizza ($9.90). The filling in between the thin crisp was pretty well done, with bits of prawns to provide that bit of a bite.

To celebrate the new opening, you can enjoy the following promotions:
- No service charge (June 2021 to August 2021)
- Free Mee Sua Dish for birthday diners

ChaoNiu Hot Pot @ East Coast Road - Chaoshan Style Beef Hot Pot

ChaoNiu12

I was really excited when I heard there is a restaurant offering beef hot pot. To be more specific, Chao Niu Hot Pot offers Chaoshan style beef hot pot. I love beef and hot pot, so this is like a match in heaven for me. The restaurant is located at the row of shophouses along East Coast Road.

ChaoNiu15

ChaoNiu10

There is basically four soup base available on the menu. The soup bases are ChanShan Beef Broth ($15), Beauty Collagen Broth ($15), Spicy Nourishing Broth ($15) and Chaoniu Signature Broth ($20). You can have a yin yang pot for an additional $2. I decided to go for the ChanShan Beef Broth to taste the origin of the beef hot pot. The broth was light but packed with flavours, drawing from the beef bones that have been simmered overnight.

ChaoNiu24

Being a beef speciality hot pot restaurant, you can order the different cuts of the beef. As we can't slaughter cow in Singapore, the different cuts of the beef are specially selected from around the world to go with the soup bases.

ChaoNiu19

ChaoNiu7

ChaoNiu8

You may think that the beautiful slices of beef are machine cut, but they are actually not. They are all skilful cut into thin slices for the chef. What amazing knife skill.

ChaoNiu5

ChaoNiu9

Besides the different cuts of beef, the menu also offers many other ingredients for the hot pot such as vegetables, mushrooms, beancurd, tofu, luncheon meat and many more. A must-order is the beef balls that are painstakingly pound by hand.

ChaoNiu14

To enjoy the beef, you cook them in a big net together we the other ingredients you have ordered, just like the way you would enjoy a steamboat dinner. The restaurant also has a sauce section whereby you can mix and match your dipping sauce. I would recommend their pre-mixed Chaoniu dipping sauce which complements the tender beef excellently.
