Leila @ Teck Lim Road - New Gastro-Bar Where Middle Eastern Comfort Meets Balkan Spice

Leila13

Leila, located on Teck Lim Road in Chinatown, is the newest gastro-bar in town, offering bold regional flavours from the Middle East and Balkans with a touch of modern sophistication to Singapore's dining scene. The menu spans from comforting breads and mezze to robust grills and reimagined desserts, making it a place well-suited for both casual sharing and indulgent feasting.

Leila2
Kubana Bread 4/5

We started dinner with the Kubana Bread ($15), a warm Yemeni brioche served alongside creamy tahini and fresh crushed tomatoes. Soft, fluffy, and slightly sweet, the bread is elevated when paired with the nutty creaminess of the tahini and the refreshing acidity of the tomato.

Leila6
Balkan Anchovy Bruschetta 4/5

The Balkan Anchovy Bruschetta ($21) is a delightful bite. Toasted homemade challah bread forms the base, topped with roasted eggplant cream, salt-cured anchovies, chopped Kalamata olives, cornichons, pickled onions, and finished with Greek olive oil. A complex layering of savoury, tangy, and briny flavours keeps every bite exciting.

Leila8
Arais Cigar 4/5

Resembling a local spring roll, the Arais Cigar ($24) is made with crisp filo pastry filled with spiced beef, paired with tahini on the side. Crisp, golden, and savoury, it makes for an addictive sharing starter.

Leila15
Green Chilli Shrimp 4.2/5

The Green Chilli Shrimp ($26) was one of the highlights. Juicy, smoky-charred shellfish is cloaked in a piquant Tatbila green chilli sauce, accompanied by a refreshing chopped salad of tomatoes, cucumbers, and fresh herbs. The combination strikes a delicate balance between heat and freshness.

Leila19
Beef Kebab Skewers 4.2/5

For heartier fare, the Beef Kebab Skewers ($25) deliver with meaty, well-seasoned bites accented with herbs and chilli. The skewers are further elevated by a robust mashwiya salsa of roasted peppers and tomatoes, accompanied by a drizzle of tahini for added creaminess.

Leila22
Manseef 4.2/5

The Manseef ($35) is a Balkan speciality worth ordering. Tender minced chicken is sautéed with onions, pine nuts, and cherry tomatoes, and sits atop hummus and tahini, finished with a dollop of harissa. Bold, nutty, and fiery, it's a dish where you'll want to save some Kubana Bread to mop everything up.

Leila28
Tripoli Freekeh Fish 4.2/5

Another standout is the Tripoli Freekeh Fish ($35). Market-fresh fish fillet is paired with freekeh, a smoky Middle Eastern grain, and served in a slow-cooked spiced tomato sauce. It’s hearty and comforting, yet refined.

Leila34
Knafe 4.5/5

Ending on a sweet note, the Knafe ($21) is the star of the evening. This modern take on a classic Middle Eastern dessert features crispy kataifi pastry, stretchy mozzarella, cinnamon, pistachios, and ice cream. The play of textures and aromatic spices made this the most memorable dish of the night.

Leila stands out for its ability to blend Middle Eastern and Balkan flavours with a touch of modern elegance. From hearty meats to vibrant small plates and a must-try dessert, it’s a place that invites you to dine, share, and discover bold yet balanced flavours.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

Coriander Leaf @ Craig Place - New Flagship Location Serving Signature Pan-Asian Cuisine

IMG_3356

After over a decade at Chijmes, Coriander Leaf has found a new home at Craig Place. Staying true to its food philosophy, the menu continues to celebrate the richness and diversity of Pan-Asian cuisine. Contrary to what many may mistake as Asian fusion, Coriander Leaf is all about taking classic regional favourites from across Asia and reimagining them into modern, shareable small plates. The menu is divided into five distinct flavour profiles: Fresh, Spicy, Familiar, Umami, and Sweet. The restaurant also offers an Executive Lunch Menu Set, perfect for individuals to get a taste of different regions.

IMG_3373
South Asia Lunch Set

IMG_3435
Tomato Soup, Butter Naan 5/5

There are four options for the lunch set inspired by Thailand, South Asia, China, and Persia. I picked South Asia and Persian ($38 each). South Asia features Tomato Soup, Nepalese Chicken Momo Dumpling, Tandoori Chicken, and Butter Naan. The tomato soup, drizzled with roasted cumin oil, was thick and robust — perfectly seasoned and spiced to bring out the richness of the tomato. The butter naan was soft and stretchy, a delicious pairing with the soup.

IMG_3379
Momo Dumpling 3.8/5

IMG_3370
Tandoori Chicken 4.5/5

The Momo Dumplings were served with a tangy roasted tomato relish that complemented the meaty filling well. They were flavourful, with a subtle hint of Sichuan pepper, though I found them leaning slightly on the dry side. The Tandoori Chicken was succulent, with a lovely char that added an alluring smokiness. A tangy cucumber relish and refreshing mint chutney balanced its spiced flavours. Between the butter naan and steamed jasmine rice offered in the set, the naan was definitely the better choice, especially to soak up the soup and pair it with the meat.

IMG_3424
Persian Lunch Set

The Persian set began with a Watermelon Salad made with watermelon, mint, pomegranate, and Turkish white cheese. I reckon more mint and leaving them as a whole would have brought a better balance to the flavours. The main dish featured a Persian Beef Kebab, served with Vegetable Shashlik, Mixed Pickled Vegetables, and Butter Basmati Rice.

IMG_3396
Beef Kebab 4/5

The Beef Kebab was delightfully tender, served with a dollop of yoghurt atop, which elevated the meat with a refreshing tang. But what made the dish even more enjoyable was the incredibly fluffy and aromatic Butter Basmati Rice. The pickled vegetables added a refreshing acidity to cut through the richness of the meat.

IMG_3405
Vegetable Shashlik 4/5

The Vegetable Shashlik was delicious. The bell peppers, eggplants, and onions cooked down nicely and seasoned with aromatics and spices, making them rather moreish.

IMG_3359

The new environment is also designed to be cosier and even more inviting than the previous location, offering an ideal setting for an intimate meal amidst the bustle of the CBD.

Hortus13

HortusIG-3

HortusIG-37

Nestled within the lush beauty of Gardens by the Bay's Flower Dome, Hortus offers diners a taste of the Mediterranean, surrounded by vibrant blooms and cool serenity. With its focus on fresh, vibrant sharing plates and rustic wood-grilled mains, Hortus presents an experience that goes beyond the food—especially with its newly launched Mediterranean Sharing Set Menu ($68++ per pax), which even includes complimentary Flower Dome admission and a buggy ride to and from the Main Entrance. A perfect little getaway without leaving Singapore!

Hortus1
Hummus, Olive Oil and Paprika 4.8/5

Hortus4
Muhammara, Roasted Bell Pepper and Walnut Dip 4.5/5

The meal kicks off with an array of five sharing starters. The Hummus with Olive Oil and Paprika was an instant hit — creamy, nutty, and elevated by the earthiness of paprika and a generous drizzle of olive oil. It is paired beautifully with the warm, fluffy housemade pita. Equally delightful was the Muhammara, a roasted bell pepper and walnut dip that was slightly smoky, nutty, and tangy — a deliciously vibrant alternative to the classic hummus.

Hortus12
Fried School Prawns, Calamari, Whitebait with Lemon Aioli 4.5/5

Next up was the Fried Seafood Basket, featuring school prawns, calamari, and whitebait, all perfectly crispy and light, paired with a zesty lemon aioli. It was dangerously addictive, with each piece a burst of flavour and crunch.

Hortus17
Yellowtail Kingfish Crudo 4.8/5

The Yellowtail Kingfish Crudo was a standout among the starters. Dressed with bergamot and green olives and scattered with pomegranate seeds, it was refreshingly bright, delicately sweet, and brimming with Mediterranean sunshine.

Hortus18
Kingfish Collar with Cabbage and Fennel Salad and Nduja 4.2/5

Moving on to the mains, we tried the Kingfish Collar with Cabbage and Fennel Salad and Nduja. Grilled to crispy perfection on the outside while keeping the flesh moist and tender, the kingfish was livened up beautifully by a squeeze of lemon and the spicy kick from the nduja. The accompanying salad of cabbage and fennel provided a refreshing counterpoint.

Hortus26
Beef and Lamb Adana Kebab with Sumac Onions 4.2/5

We also sampled the Beef and Lamb Adana Kebab with Sumac Onions. Typically, kebabs can veer on the dry side, but Hortus' version was juicy, aromatic, and full of flavour. The sweet and tangy sumac onions on top brought a much-appreciated brightness to the hearty meat skewer.

Hortus27
Cracked Wheat Salad with Dill, Mint, and Pomegranate 4.2/5

Hortus30
Rice Pilaf with Pistachio and Lemon 4.5/5

To complement the mains, we had the Cracked Wheat Salad and the Rice Pilaf with Pistachio and Lemon. Both were excellent — the cracked wheat salad was herby and fresh with pops of pomegranate, while the rice pilaf was light, fragrant, and enhanced by the nuttiness of pistachios and citrusy lemon.

Hortus31
House churned Vanilla Gelato, Halva, Tahini 4.5/5

Desserts were a true surprise and delight. The House Churned Vanilla Gelato, paired with halva, tahini, pomegranate syrup, and mint, was a symphony of textures and flavours — sweet, nutty, creamy, and refreshing all at once.

HortusIG-16
Rose and Cardamom Basbousa 4.5/5

The final treat, Rose and Cardamom Basbousa, sealed the meal on a high note. The moist semolina cake, topped with house churned pistachio gelato and cardamom cream, offered a beautiful blend of floral and nutty flavours that was both comforting and exotic.

HortusIG-2

Hortus isn't just a restaurant — it's an experience. The combination of fresh Mediterranean flavours, an idyllic garden setting, and thoughtful touches like complimentary entry and transport make it a memorable destination dining spot. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply craving a leisurely meal with a view, Hortus delivers in every way.

Bhoomi by Milind Sovani @ Orchard Towers - A Celebration of India's Gastronomic Traditions with Modern Touch

IMG_1213

Chef Milind Sovani's latest culinary venture, Bhoomi, located at Claymore Drive, is a heartfelt tribute to India's diverse culinary heritage. Designed to highlight the robust spices of North India and the coastal delights of the Konkan region, Bhoomi showcases age-old recipes alongside contemporary inspirations from Chef Milind's extensive travels across India. The result is a thoughtful menu that celebrates India's gastronomic traditions with a modern touch while focusing on sustainability and healthy meals through organic, locally sourced ingredients and traditional cooking methods.

IMG_1181
Kulthachey Kalan 5/5

The meal began with Kulthachey Kalan, a comforting soup crafted from horsegrain (huligey) sourced from rural Konkan. Light yet flavourful, it was seasoned with warming spices and a hint of heat—perfect for awakening the palate.

IMG_1194
Bhima Onion and Avocado Kebab 4.8/5

Another starter, the Bhima Onion and Avocado Kebab featured pan-seared patties of avocado, Nasik white onion, and handmade cheese. The patties were beautifully seared, creating a delightful contrast between the crispy exterior and the creamy interior. A delicate balance of sweetness and savoury notes, enhanced with finely chopped onions and spices, made this a standout dish.

IMG_1201
Ultimate Chicken Tikka 4.5/5

From the charcoal-grilled specials, the Ultimate Chicken Tikka was a crowd-pleaser. Marinated using an authentic recipe from Delhi's Daryaganj, the chicken was beautifully succulent and packed with robust flavours. The smoky char from the grill added a delightful depth, while a hint of lemony acidity provided a refreshing lift. Although slightly on the saltier side, it remained a satisfying and well-executed dish.

IMG_1247
Koila Butter Chicken 4.5/5

Moving on to curries, the Koila Butter Chicken was one of Bhoomi's star offerings. Slow-cooked in a claypot over a charcoal pit, the curry was rich and indulgent yet skillfully balanced with layers of spices and nuanced flavours.

IMG_1216
Lahsooni Palak Paneer 4/5

Vegetarian-friendly options like the Lahsooni Palak Paneer and Mewadi Panchmeli Dal were equally noteworthy. The Lahsooni Palak Paneer featured a light garlic-tossed spinach puree, delicately seasoned to enhance the dish's natural flavours. The chargrilled cottage cheese cubes were soft, creamy, and milky, complementing the spinach beautifully.

IMG_1241
Mewadi Panchmeli Dal 5/5

Meanwhile, the Mewadi Panchmeli Dal, made with Rajasthan's five lentils and served with smoked chilli and ghee tadka, was a spice and texture masterclass, offering depth and consistency.

IMG_1232
Garlic Naan and Gluten-free Seeded Amaranth Roti

To accompany these curries, we had Garlic Naan and the gluten-free Seeded Amaranth Roti, the latter particularly impressed with its nutty undertones and aromatic toasted seeds.

IMG_1252
Gud Ki Rasmalai 4.5/5

Ending the meal was a dessert originating from the Bengali region - Gud Ki Rasmalai. This dessert featured soft and spongy Bengali-style rasmalai, made with sugar-free palm jaggery. The sponginess was achieved by kneading milk solids separated from boiling milk with vinegar. Infused with quintessential flavours of cardamom and rose water, it was another sophisticated representation of Indian culinary traditions.

The menu showcases a vibrant array of dishes that represent the diverse flavours of India, spanning from the North to the South, East to West. Complementing the culinary experience, Raffles' resident sommeliers have curated a selection of alcoholic beverages to pair with the meal.

IMG_8193
Makai Matar Chaat 4/5

The meal commenced with two appetizers. From West India came the Makai Matar Chaat, a delightful medley of sweet corn, green peas, onions, and tomatoes, brought to life with tangy tamarind and herbaceous mint chutneys.

IMG_8205
Khumani Mugh Kebab 5/5

Next was the Khumani Mugh Kebab, a tandoor-grilled chicken leg from Uttar Pradesh in North India, tender and rich in spices with a smoky finish, served alongside refreshing yoghurt rice for balance.

IMG_8235

For the mains, the dishes were served in the Tiffin Room's signature tiffin boxes, accompanied by an assortment of Garlic Naan, Butter Naan, and the moreish Kashmiri Naan. Nutty and sweet-savoury with pistachios and cranberries, the Kashmiri naan was the perfect pairing for the flavourful curries.

IMG_8240
Murgh E Lazeez 4.5/5

The main courses featured regional specialities. From Hyderabad came Murgh E Lazeez, a stuffed chicken breast in a light, well-balanced gravy of onion, chilli, tomato, and cashew nuts. The chicken was tender and infused with the aromatic stuffing.

IMG_8238
Erachi Ularthu 4.5/5

Next was Erachi Ularthu, a Keralan-inspired lamb chop stir-fry with caramelized onions, coconut, fennel seeds, and curry leaves. The rich and onion-sweet gravy paired harmoniously with the tender lamb.

IMG_8239
Kadhai Lobster 4.2/5

Kadhai Lobster, inspired by Punjabi cuisine, featured a robust tomato curry infused with bell peppers and coriander. Although slightly salty, the lobster was succulent and satisfying.

IMG_8254
Moradabadi Fish Biryani 4/5

The Moradabadi Fish Biryani, a take on the biryani from Uttar Pradesh, presented slices of fried pomfret fish buried in fragrant rice, garnished with mint and coriander. While delectable, the version from last year, featuring fresh tomatoes, was preferred for its simplicity and enhanced the rice's flavour.

IMG_8268
Diwali Sweets 4.5/5

Dessert was a well-balanced trio of traditional Diwali Sweets paired exquisitely with 1985 Dalva Port wine. The Akhrot Halwa was a sweet, nutty indulgence made from walnut pudding with mixed nuts. The Kaju Strawberry Katli, a slightly creamy cashew fudge blended with strawberries, offered a Southern Indian twist, while the Besan Till Burfi, a chickpea flour and coconut confection, delighted with its comforting sweet finish.

The Diwali dining experience will be available for lunch and dinner in both non-vegetarian (S$122++ per guest) and vegetarian (S$110++ per guest) options from 20 October to 3 November 2024, with a wine pairing option to elevate the dining experience (S$88++ per guest).
