LA SAVOIR @ Scotts Square - French-Inspired Cafe With Hermès Decor And Tableware

IMG_7543

Fancy having your next meal served on gorgeous Hermès tableware? Check out LA SAVOIR, the newest F&B entrant in Scotts Square. The first thing that caught our eye, stepping into the cafe, would definitely be the Hermès wallpapers and showcase of patterned Hermès plates. The cafe is carefully and luxuriously decorated to weave in colonial and Pairisan elements.

LA SAVOIR's menu has specially curated dishes to harmonise local and French flavours. They also offer a simple breakfast menu that is available from 10am to 11.30am on Monday to Thursday and from 10am to 2pm on Friday to Sunday.

IMG_7546
Mentaiko Fries 3.8/5

Our meal started with their Mentaiko Fries ($16). The substantial portion of crunchy fries is topped with mentaiko mayonnaise, tobiko and bonito flakes. These were decent, but considering this price tag, they could be much more generous with the mentaiko sauce, especially for fries in the bottom half of the basket.

IMG_7545
Wild Sprouts Salad 4/5

I could not resist ordering the Wild Sprouts Salad ($18) as I am a huge fan of brussels sprouts. LA SAVOIR presents their well-charred brussels sprouts and juicy mushrooms dressed in a slightly creamy yuzu aioli, further topped with guava pickles, bonito flakes and tobiko. The elements in this dish reminded us more of Japanese flavours instead of French or local, but we didn't mind it.

IMG_7547
Truffle Chicken Ballotine 3.8/5

We moved into mains with the Truffle Chicken Ballotine ($32). It uses free-range chicken alongside a creamy butternut mousseline, savoy cabbage, pickled carrots and black truffle. The chicken was a touch dry, but we appreciated the variety of textures that were put together.

IMG_7548
Uni Pasta 4/5

Next was the Uni Pasta ($35) with linguine sat in uni foam, topped with Bafun uni and trout roe. I recommend ordering this as a sharing dish as it is rich in its briny uni flavour.

IMG_7549
LA SAVOIR Butter Board 4/5

The LA SAVOIR Butter Board ($18) arrived with a board of freshly made butter in three styles and a bread basket. It was a pity that two of the three bread selections were over-toasted, but the unique butters were the highlight. Apart from classic sea salt butter, there was an appetising spiced shrimp butter and an addictive furikake-flavoured one.

IMG_7550
Dark Choco Creme Brûlée 4/5

The dessert menu has a simple list of three items. Our first was the Dark Choco Creme Brûlée (S$17) which uses Callebaut dark chocolate 70%, raspberries, pistachio crumbs and mixed berry sorbet. I appreciated the thin and crisp caramelised creme brûlée top and the chocolatey base, but the different elements on the plate could be better harmonised.

IMG_7551
Strawberry & Basil 3.8/5

The Strawberry & Basil ($16) is a carefully plated dish with house-made maple granola, yoghurt mousse, sliced strawberries, basil crush and lychee goji sorbet. While it served as a sweet and refreshing wrap up to our meal, we were definitely expecting more of it as a whole, considering its price tag.

Blu Kouzina @ Siglap - Greek-style Breakfast In An Idyllic Setting

BluKouzinaSiglap27

Blu Kouzina at Dempsey has been known for its authentic Greek cuisine for the past decade. Its latest outlet at Siglap now even includes a breakfast menu, allowing customers to enjoy a full-fledged Greek dining experience any time of the day. It opens as early as 730am on the weekend!

BluKouzinaSiglap10

It is such a great place to be before the day begins with its idyllic island-inspired setting. I was lucky to visit on a weekday morning, where I got to enjoy its serenity before it got disturbed by the buzz of chatter from the afternoon crowd.

BluKouzinaSiglap13
Greek Breakfast 4.5/5

The biggest drawn of its Breakfast Menu is its Greek Selection. We had the Greek Breakfast ($22) that comes with a choice of coffee or tea, alongside a Spinach Pie ($9.50) and Lamb Sausage Roll ($11.50). The Greek Breakfast was wholesome with a slab of feta cheese, two perfectly done hardboiled eggs with a slight oozy yolk, tomatoes, fried bread, olives, a generous portion of yoghurt, a handful of walnuts and a serving of honey.

BluKouzinaSiglap14

I amped up my Greek Breakfast with a few Add ons - Crispy Kale ($2), Roasted Potatoes ($3), and Spinach ($2). The Roasted Potatoes is not your usual kind but are marinated with lemon before roasting to give it a touch of tanginess.

BluKouzinaSiglap23
Spinach Pie 4.2/5

Rarely you will get a good Spinach Pie loaded with spinach and feta cheese filling. The pie is incredibly yummy with a thin, buttery and flaky crust made with phyllo pastry.

BluKouzinaSiglap40
Lamb Sausage Roll 3.8/5

The highly recommended Lamb Sausage Roll ($11.50) comes with homemade sausage. The lamb sausage was tender and juicy, and the rich tomato sauce complemented it excellently.

BluKouzinaSiglap18
Homemade Granola 4/5

Every place has its recipe for homemade granola. You will probably crave its Homemade Granola ($8) if it is your kind of breakfast. The granola wasn't too sweet, and the generous portion of yoghurt and honey dolloped over the granola was pleasingly satiable.

BluKouzinaSiglap6
Lemon Verbena Tea

BluKouzinaSiglap31
Greek Coffee

The regular coffees are great but do try the specialities such as the Greek Coffee and a range of tea imported from Greece.

Summerlong @ Robertson Quay - The New City Beach Cafe Along Singapore River

20170701_113139_HDR

The laid-back atmosphere of Robertson Quay provides the almost perfect backdrop for Summerlong, a "city beach" cafe and bar conceptualized by the team behind Neon Pigeon, Fat Prince and The Ottoman Room. If you ain't familiar with them, that's fine. Just sit back and immerse yourself into the beach vacation mood evoked by the beachside theme interior and tuck into the Mediterranean dishes crafted by Chef Justin Hammond of Neon Pigeon, serving up snacks, dips, and shared dishes which complement your coffees and drinks. On the weekends, Summerlong naturally becomes one of the to-go places for a relaxed brunch.

20170701_115145_HDR
Almond Yogurt & Granola 2/5

We got started with a bowl of Almond Yogurt & Granola ($15) which consists of buckwheat, poached pear and nuts ($15.00). I was looking forward to trying a different combination of yogurt and granola. Well, the almond yogurt was simply too sweet for me to taste anything.

20170701_120159_HDR
Smoked Salmon 3/5

From the Brunch mains, we had Smoked Salmon ($20) with sous vide egg, capers, pickled shallots and rye. Poached eggs seem to be a thing of the past with these sous vide eggs. Only with precision comes such creamy egg yolks, that allows me to spread over the salmon and bread upon breaking the egg, without running all over my plate and turning my bread soggy. It would have been better if there is something to go along with to make the overall taste less salty.

20170701_124420_HDR
Blueberry Pancakes 3.8/5

What surprises is its Blueberry Pancakes ($18) served with lemon butterscotch maple syrup and mascarpone. Crowning the stack of pancakes with honeycomb was delightful. The warm fluffy pancake together with the thick golden syrup and buttery mascarpone was simply a special treat of the day!

20170701_114902_HDR

The Counter is my favourite corner. Depending on the selections on that day, you get to choose from a selection of pastries, tarts, baked goods and salads. The Roasted Cauliflower was really tasty and I highly recommend its Mushroom Borek which is like a fried spring roll filled with mushroom and cheese. You can choose from any 2 items for $15 or any 3 items for $19.

20170701_113351_HDR

Reservation is recommended especially if you want to have your alfresco seating with the breeze to complete your beachside experience.

Artisan Boulangerie Co. @ Killiney Road

DSCF0388

Artisan Boulangerie Co., (ABC to most), is a homegrown bakery and café with European influences. Helmed by Award-winning Executive Chef Eran Mayer, formally trained at prestigious French culinary institutes, who dedicates himself to delivering to his customers high quality artisan products made with all natural ingredients containing no preservatives, flavour enhancers, colouring or palm oil. Within a year, ABC has already won itself a regular fan base. Conjunction with its first anniversary, it opened two more new outlets at 112 Katong and Chevron House. It also added a new enticing menu items to meet its customers' appetite. Tonight, we visited their flagship store at Killiney Road to have a try at its new menu.

DSC_2542
Olive Bread, Raisin Bread and Bagette 4.2/5

Since we were here, of course we must try their breads! We started off the evening with slices of Olive Bread, Raisin Bread and Baguette. Light and tasty, I had to stop myself from reaching for more.

DSC_2545
Artisanal Almond Granola 4.5/5

Artisanal Almond Granola ($12++) is a new brunch item which soon became rather popular. Nestled in a jar, the bottom was pebbled with its house blend Granola (organic oats, toasted almonds, sesame, sunflower seeds, honey & cinnamon), followed by plain yogurt topped with freshly cut fruits. You may have tasted granolas items that are overly sweetened and artificially flavoured. But this, tasted like Spring. The granolas itself was very lightly sweetened with honey. Together with the yogurt and fruits, every bite was crisp, nutty, sweet and soury.

DSC_2546
Eggs Benedict 3.5/5

Eggs Benedict ($19.5++). Made using their very own butter brioche, this classic item is definitely a crowd pleaser. I like the chewiness of the Serrano ham. It was quite salty at certain bites but putting it together with the toast and the eggs strikes a fine balance.

DSC_2552
Miso Salmon Fillet 4/5

Miso Salmon Fillet ($22++). Topped on linguine, the fillet was moist and gave off a faint aroma of the sweet miso. The linguine was evenly coated with a creamy herbed smoke salmon sauce which I really like. It was flavourful yet not empowering. However, I feel slightly more herbs and miso would have added more layers of taste to this dish.

DSC_2550
Roast Chicken Breast 3.8/5

I appreciate the simplicity and organicity of the subsequent two dishes, Roast Chicken Breast ($19++) and Garden Pesto ($14++) . I felt the breast meat was quite well seasoned with wholegrain mustard which was complemented by the sweetness of the caramelised onions. The meat was slightly dry but the mushroom sauce helped to cream it up slightly.

DSC_2548
Garden Pesto 4.5/5

To some, the Garden Pesto (fine beans, sugar snap peas, mixed greens, edamame, sundried tomatoes, fresh mozzarella with homemade rocket pesto) may be a bit too "green". But personally I enjoyed it. I like the natural sweetness of the greens and how the chef made use of the ingredients of different taste profiles such as sundried tomatoes and mozzarella to build the layers of flavour in this simple dish.

DSC_2554
Lemon Tart 3/5

DSC_2556
Chocolate Lava Cake 3/5

To end off, we have three desserts. Lemon Tart ($6++), Chocolate Lava Cake ($8++) and Crème Brulee ($10++). My favourite was Crème brûlée, which I feel is a must-try. The crisp caramelised sugar cracked at the tip of my spoon. The custard was soft but not runny. What I appreciate is the thickness of the custard layer. Every spoonful was matched with the right amount of sugar crust. Seeing all the vanilla seeds at the bottom of the ramekin affirms the Chef’s philosophy in using only good quality ingredients. It is a real comforting dessert to end the night.

DSC_2553
Creme Brulee 4.5/5

Little did we know that there was a little surprise installed for us tonight. Chef invited us to his holy ground, the place where he works his magic. To ensure that his customers get the freshest in the morning, his kitchen runs 24 hours. No big fanciful equipment, only the good old traditional ovens and chillers. All his imported French flours have their respective "ID numbers" to assure their authenticity. Amazing isn't it? Like what he said, apart from the basic ingredients of making breads - flour, water, yeast, the other two special ones are "time" and "love". (He said this with his fist to his heart). The Chef's passion gives me a whole new level of appreciation towards ABC's breads and pastries.

DSCF0386

With such a strong belief and dedication towards delivering fresh and quality food to its customers, it's no surprise to see it succeeding within a short period of time. ABC also serves its signature dishes at Asia Square, VivoCity and Great World City. But do also try some of its hot items such as croissants. Made with premium European butter, I'm sure they will be another comfort food to ward off any blues.
