Teochew Fish Ball Noodle @ Crawford Lane (Lavender) - A Delicious Bowl Of Traditional Fishball Noodle

TeochewFishballNoodle9

I have heard about an excellent Teochew fishball noodle stall at Crawford Lane. Still, I always end up going to the one Michelin-starred Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodles. So finally, I got a chance to visit the area and took the opportunity to check out Teochew Fish Ball Noodle, located inside a coffeeshop at block 462 Crawford Lane.

TeochewFishballNoodle4
Fishball Mee Pok Dry 4/5

We tried the Fishball Mee Pok Dry ($3) and Fishball Mee Kia Dry ($4). Unlike other fish ball stalls, you get pork slices, minced pork and meatball on top of the fishballs and fish cake slices. It is also unusual to see orange coloured fish cake nowadays.

TeochewFishballNoodle3
Fishball Mee Kia Dry 4.5/5

TeochewFishballNoodle2

Between the mee pok and mee kia, we find the mee kia goes better with the concoction of sambal chilli and vinegar. Though the vinegar is not as punchy compared to Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodles, you still get that sourish kick balanced with the sambal for that slurping goodness.

TeochewFishballNoodleStall-3

Overall, Teochew Fish Ball Noodle offers a good bowl of fishball noodles. However, if you find the queue at Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodles is too long, you may consider making a slight detour to try the fishball noodle just a few blocks away.

Moo Station @ Crawford Lane (Lavender) - First of Its Kind Phuket Style Pork Dry Rice Porridge

MooStation20

Probably the first in Singapore is the Phuket style Pork Dry Rice Porridge, located inside a kopitiam at Crawford Lane. Moo Station is opened by a husband and wife team, Pilaiporn Boonchoo (Sandy) and David Ang. The dish Khao Tom Hoeng (dry rice porridge) gained popularity when Go Benz in Phuket City got a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2019. Since we can't travel with all the travel restrictions now, Sandy decides to R&D and bring the dish from her hometown to our shore.

MooStation4
Signature Pork Dry Rice Porridge 4/5

MooStation19

The Signature Pork Dry Rice Porridge comes in 2 sizes. $5 for small and $7 for large. In the rice bowl, there are pig innards, minced pork, pork slices and pork rib. To enjoy, pour the bowl of sweet pork soup into the rice bowl.

MooStation25

The pork soup is the soul of the dry rice porridge, flavouring the enjoyment. At the same time, the addition of fried garlic gives it an aromatic boost. It is a hearty and comforting bowl of dry rice porridge. I have never try Khao Tom Hoeng before, so I can't compare. Personally, I feel if the soup is a bit peppery will be more appetising.

MooStation13
Crispy Pork Skin 4/5

MooStation10
Crispy Pork Belly 4.2/5

Besides the dry rice porridge, one can complete the meal with sides such as Crispy Pork Skin ($1.50) and Crispy Pork Belly ($6). The pork skin is an addictive crispy snack. However, I am more surprised by the juicy, crispy pork belly with crackling skin. Therefore, I highly recommend ordering it to complete your meal.

MooStationStall-5 (1)

If you can't decide what to order, you can go for the Combo Set Meal for 2 Pax ($18/ $22). It comes 2 Signature Pork Dry Rice Porridge, 1 Crispy Pork Belly, 1 Fried Pork Skin and 2 Onsen Eggs.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

Founder Bak Kut Teh @ Hotel Boss (Jalan Sultan) - Introduces New Mama's Home-cooked Dishes

FounderBKT21

Many of you will be familiar with Founder Bak Kut Teh, a well known local restaurant serving the fragrant and peppery pork ribs soup for the past 40 years. Even a lot of foreign celebrities visited the restaurant for their bak kut teh when they were in Singapore, judging from the numerous photos paste around the restaurant taken between these celebrities and founder Mr Chua.

FounderBKT4

Not to be missed of course is the signature Founder Bak Kut Teh ($8.90). The pork ribs are cooked to tender using the freshest meaty pork ribs, simmered in a specially formulated broth of herbs and spices. Diners can choose among options of ribs, short ribs, lean meats or offal to go with the peppery broth too.

FounderBKT5
Neighbour's "Ho Liao" 4.2/5

Besides the signature Bak Kut Teh, the restaurant has rolled out a number of new home-cooked dishes paying tribute to their late mother. If you are a fan of chicken feet, you will love their Neighbour's "Ho Liao" ($5/$10). It is cooked in a black bean sauce, just like how their late mum did it for the family.

FounderBKT6
Cheeky Secret 4/5

Spinach and mushroom are mixed into the tofu for the Cheeky Secret ($8/$14). Parents may want to learn a trick or two here if you're going to make your children consume vegetable.

FounderBKT11
Too Moody To Eat 3.8/5

Too Moody To Eat ($6.80/$10.80) is pork chop marinated with garlic and pan-fried. The interesting part is the accompanying achar which helps to cut the greasiness.

FounderBKT17
Grandma's Pork Belly 3.5/5

Braised and cooked to tender is the Grandma's Pork Belly ($12). While the texture is acceptable, I felt that the braising sauce is on the light side and lacks the depth I was looking for.

FounderBKT30
Best with Rice 4.5/5

One of the new dishes that we all given the thumb of approval is the Best with Rice ($6.80). It is not only a simple steamed egg dish but consists of trio eggs, including century egg and salted egg. On top of that, pork lard is added for that extra boost in flavour and texture.

FounderBKT26
Once Upon A Gathering 4.2/5

Once Upon A Gathering ($8/$12) is a special dish in the family which is only served during special celebratory occasions. A homely and hearty dish that consists of steamed chicken with Chinese sausages, mushrooms, and ginger.

FounderBKT14
"Ah Lau" Pan Fried Fish 4.2/5

For the fish lover, there is the "Ah Lau" Pan Fried Fish (Fish Steak $15, Fish Tail $28). The fish is simply pan-fried and served with marinated garlic atop, swimming in a complementing pool of soy sauce.

FounderBKT22
Year 1988 Assam Teochew Steamed Fish 3.5/5

Last but not least, making an impressive entry is the Year 1988 Assam Teochew Steamed Fish (Fish Steak $15, Fesh Head $25, Fish Tail $28). For the pricing and very value for money. However I find the assam is on the mild side, I think it can be heavier in taste to give it more zest.

Overall, I have enjoyed the meal at Founder Bak Kut Teh. I like the addition of the new dishes, giving diners a more complete meal experience.

11 Hamilton @ Hamilton Road - Modern Chic Cafe That Offers A Contemporary Australian-Inspired Menu With A Fusion Twist

11Hamilton8

The folks behind cafe Hustle Co. has recently rebranded and officially opened a new all-day dining concept - 11 Hamilton. Moving out of its former premises at Craig Road, the cafe was relocated in the Lavender and Jalan Besar precinct, serving contemporary Australian inspired menu with a fusion twist. Gather your loved ones over hearty brunch dishes during the day, or enjoy a range of craft beer and dinner service from 5pm onwards.

11Hamilton3
Breakfast For Champs 3.8/5

The Breakfast For Champs ($22) comes in a huge heart portion of Huevos Estrellados made with crispy potato cubes, jamon slices, scrambled eggs and runny yolk sauce to bind everything together. The dish is initially obscured by the mass of wild rocket which provides a bitter, nutty taste to the dish.

11Hamilton1
Deconstructed Spanish Jamon Omelette 3.8/5

The Deconstructed Spanish Jamon Omelette ($22) is reminiscent of a huge pizza on a pan. It features jamon slices doused with piquillo mayo, a mass of wild rockets and grilled asparagus spears on a thin bed of omelette. Although I enjoyed the rich savouriness of the jamon slices, again, we felt that the bitter, nutty rocket leaves overwhelmed the primary flavours of the dish.

11Hamilton4
Blueberry Banana Cinnamon Pancake 4/5

The Blueberry Banana Cinnamon Pancake ($18) comes in a thick fluffy slab of pancakes, embellished with berries and caramelised banana slices, and sweetened with a slight drizzle of maple syrup. However, we felt that the sweetness of the pancake can be brought up a few more notches. Perhaps the maple syrup could be served on the side for diners to adjust the sweetness level themselves.

11Hamilton2
Sweet Potato Fries 4/5

The Sweet Potato Fries ($9) arrived in a pretty huge portion, perfect for sharing. The fries boast a crisp exterior, yet pack a solid bite filled with fragrant sweet potato filings. A simple, yet well-executed side to go along with the mains.

11Hamilton5
Ondeh Ondeh Cake 4.2/5

Round off your meal on a sweet note with an array of gorgeous bakes from a local partner, The Brickyard. We tried their bestseller, Ondeh Ondeh ($7), which boasts light and fluffy pandan chiffon, layered with gula melaka frosting and topped with crunchy coconut shreds. This delicate, locally inspired dessert is not too sweet or cloying and is totally worth the indulgence.

The Refinery @ King George's Avenue - Revamped Menu With Lunch Set For As Low As $14

TheRefinery9

The Refinery at King George's Avenue has recently revamped their menu with new creations. Known for its Refinery Truffle Gyudon since it opened its doors 3 years ago, the new menu now includes lighter donburi options as well as vegetarian side dishes for sharing. Regulars can also look forward to new dishes every month on the seasonal menu.

TheRefinery2
Yuzu Tako Carpaccio 4/5

Yuzu Tako Carpaccio ($8) is a great way to start your meal, especially if you have a glass of wine in hand. Sliced to the right thickness, each piece of octopus was tender and enjoyable. I love the zesty and savoury yuzu shoyu dressing, which works well with the delicate flavours of the octopus.

TheRefinery18
Wakame Salad 3.5/5

An excellent vegetarian alternative to the Tako Carpaccio would the Wakame Salad ($4), which is full of crunch from the cucumber slices and assorted Japanese seaweed rehydrated with vinegar dressing.

TheRefinery22
Kang Kong Tempura 3/5

I was quite amused by the sight of this bunch of Kang Kong Tempura ($8) when it first arrived. The batter was light, airy and nicely seasoned. Each piece was a pleasure to snack on, especially when the batter had a slight chewiness to it. The Kang Kong itself was almost tasteless, and it served merely as a body for the batter. As for the dipping sauce, I prefer the original tempura dip, which has a refreshing effect on the tempura. This Thai Chilli sauce has the texture of Gochujang with a hint of sambal flavour, which is too rich for the battered Kang Kong.

TheRefinery11
Mixed Chirashi Bowl Lunch Set 3/5

My lunch set comes with a Mixed Chirashi Bowl ($14), Appetiser, Miso Soup & Iced Coffee Ball (+$2.50). I like the crushed fried wanton skins layered at the bottom of the toppings, which gave extra flavour and texture to the don. The entire experience could be better if my appetiser was not another plate of raw salmon cubes. It was somewhat like an afterthought.

TheRefinery4
Iced Coffee Ball

When you are done with your meal, the Iced Coffee Ball would have melted, turning your coffee into a chilled coffee. Available in 2 flavours - Macadamia or Praline, it can be a little sweet, but I thought it serves well as a post-meal drink.

TheRefinery19
Cold Dip Tom Yum Udon 4/5

The seasonal special of the month is Cold Dip Tom Yum Udon ($16). It features cold Japanese Inaniwa udon with crab meat, ebi and enoki tempura, served with Tom Yum consommé. Reminiscent of Korean's cold noodles Naengmyeon, the chilled Tom Yum Consommé was piquant and pretty intense in flavours despite its seemingly light consistency, but not too assertive, which paired well with the thin Inaniwa udon.

TheRefinery31

The ambience here simply sets up the mood for a waffle moment. Its signature The Refinery Waffles ($14) comes with a scoop of Hokkaido milk ice cream, which I believe will be perfect with the berry compote that comes with it but sadly, that was out of stock, and we got to replace ours with a dark chocolate ice cream. The waffles' golden brown crispy crust allow them to hold the ice cream really well and I really love the buttery edges. Although we didn't get to try the Hokkaido milk ice cream, this dark chocolate ice cream was decadent enough. The tart berry compote is an important acidic element of this dessert, and a more generous portion of it would definitely give it a better balance in flavour.

Antoinette @ Penhas Road - Ushers In A Collection Of Delectable Treats And Inviting Flavours

20190523_185645-01

This May, Chef Pang Kok Keong has upped the ante at Antoinette with a fresh new menu revealing a collection of bistro-style imbued in French cuisine, but it is the menu dedicated to a decadent savoury and sweet souffle pancakes, as well as its latest cake creations that you should hone in on.

Forestiere
Forestiere 4/5

Kicking off with a menu selection total of 5 flavours, both savoury and sweet - fans of souffle pancakes are bound to be spoilt for choice. The savoury variation offers a whole new perspective of enjoying the souffle pancakes. Our pick goes to the Forestiere ($16) which sees pancakes stacked with creamy mushroom sauce, a fluffy omelette and a small garden salad on the side.

TrésBerries
TresBerries 4.2/5

An all-time favourite classic is the TresBerries ($16) which features soft slabs of souffle pancakes with light, airy vanilla creme chantilly, accompanied by fresh strawberries and blueberries. Turn up the sweetness level with a generous dousing of honey maple syrup.

Crème Brûlée
Creme Brulee 4.2/5

For those with a sweet tooth, the Creme Brulee ($16) is one that needs no persuasion to be polished off. With vanilla custard draped over the pancakes, accompanied by a thin layer of carefully torched caramel and pieces of strawberries on the side.

Ondeh Ondeh
Ondeh Ondeh 4/5

A heartfelt ode to the beloved Singapore Kueh, the Ondeh Ondeh ($16) is served with a local twist, surprisingly well-balanced with lavish sprinkles of snowy coconut flakes, pandan-flavoured custard and drizzles of gula melaka for a touch of nostalgia.

Fluffy
Fluffy 4.2/5

Indulge in Antoinette’s five new cake creations, courtesy of Chef Pang, with an emphasis on the balance of flavours and creativity.

An inspiration gathered from the clouds, the cloud-shaped dessert aptly named Fluffy ($13/$49/$98) is a white chocolate mousse scented with vanilla. Aesthetics-aside, the taste of this charming piece of dessert was no less impressive. Take a bite into the soft exterior to reveal a decadent heart of Kirsh-soaked almond genoise, strawberry cremeux and a thin layer of tangy passionfruit lemon jelly for a gentle touch of tartness.

Earl Grey Bubble Tea
Earl Grey Bubble Tea 4/5

Fans of bubble tea would surely be enticed by this unique creation. The Earl Grey Bubble Tea ($9/$42.50/$85) comes in a cup filled with light and spongy cake at the base, infused with a rich earl grey tea aroma, followed by a thick layer of salted cream cheese, and topped with fresh mango cubes and tapioca pearls steeped in Okinawa black sugar. This fun-filled creation is as enjoyable to eat as it is Instagram-worthy.

Kyoto
Kyoto 3.8/5

Another tea infused creation is the Kyoto ($9/$42.50/$85) which pays homage to hojicha teas. The dessert reveals a layer of mousse enriched with a toasty nutty aroma of the hojicha flavour, a thin layer of orange confit for a subtle tangy-sweetness. This is then topped with a soft finger sponge made with Okinawa black sugar, complete with black sugar crème chantilly and a sleek of glaze finish. However, we felt that the orange confit was a mismatch to the richness of hojicha.

Bananier
Bananier 4/5

The Bananier ($9/$42.50/$85) features a classic marriage of dark chocolate and caramelised bananas. The rich layers of chocolate genoise find pleasant contrast with layers of crunchy milk chocolate feuilletine, and laced with light caramel parfaits and rum-flambéd bananas to give a moreish mouthfeel with the different texture and flavours.

Velvet Rouge
Velvet Rouge 3.8/5

Lastly, the Velvet Rouge ($9/$42.50/$85) was a well-executed elegant take on the classic red velvet cheesecake. The rich creaminess of the crimson-dyed cheesecake is cut with the light sweet-saltiness of the salted caramel crème chantilly, finished off grandly with showers of chocolate crumble for a delightfully balanced bite.

Schiacciata2
Schiacciata 4/5

Revel in the hearty repertoire of bistro-style dishes as well. A classic take on comforting food, the all-day menu draws in on starters, mains as well as seasonal specials that continue to excite diners' palate.

Kickstart the meal with the Schiacciata ($18), a traditional flatbread stuffed with melted camembert, pecorino and a rich truffle aroma. Served with a sunny side up and honey for a sweet-savoury combination, which surprisingly works well.

Wagyu Beef Cheek Tagliatelle1
Wagyu Beef Cheek Tagliatelle 4/5

For mains, the Wagyu Beef Cheek Tagliatelle ($28) is another new addition to the menu. The homemade whole wheat pasta boasts a thicker texture and chewier bite, complemented by the delicious wagyu beef cheek braised in red wine, veal stock and aromatics for 6 hours which blends perfectly with the pasta. Topped with an indulgent truffle foam to enliven the experience.

French Chicken and Sausage Casserole2
French Chicken and Sausage Casserole 3.8/5

Next, we move on to the French Chicken and Sausage Casserole ($24) - a classic french country-style casserole with braised chicken and pork sausage cooked together in a tomato-based stew with wine and cannellini beans. The hearty dish is then sprinkled with parmesan bread crumbs and broiled. Served with pomme puree on the side made with mashed potato.

Crispy Pork Belly Confit
Crispy Pork Belly Confit 4.2/5

The seasonal Crispy Pork Belly ($28) is a favourite with pork belly cured and confit in duck fat for a day pressed to shape and fry over low heat to achieve the perfect tender consistency, well-rendered fats, and thin crisp skin. The dish is served with savoury cabbage braised in chicken stock, pomme puree, and an umami-laden mustard sauce made from Dijon and Pommery mustard for a hint of spice.
