ENChanko Hotpot & Kamameshi @ Vivocity - Singapore's First Chanko Hotpot Specialty Restaurant

IMG_0268

ENChanko Hotpot & Kamameshi is a chanko hotpot speciality restaurant that recently opened in VivoCity. Chankonabe is a traditional dish in Japan, a hotpot stew that is well-loved for its hearty flavours and wholesomeness. ENChanko Hotpot & Kamameshi offers three varieties of Chankonabes alongside a selection of Kamameshi, a traditional Japanese rice dish cooked in a cast iron pot.

IMG_0241
Signature Tori Chankonabe 2.8/5

3 choices of Chankonabe are available - Signature Tori Chankonabe (Chicken), Buta Motsu Chankonabe (Pork) and Kaisen Chankonabe (Seafood). All hotpots are available in 4 pax, 2 pax and individual portions. We tried its Signature Tori Chankonabe (Chicken, $58 for 4 pax, $30 for 2 pax), which is nutritious with Jitori chicken – a natural, antibiotic-free and free-range chicken.

IMG_0290
Mochi Kinchaku

IMG_0267
Housemade Chicken Tsukune

It also boasts a good mix of ingredients - chewy Mochi Kinchaku, Housemade Chicken Tsukune, Beijing cabbage, Japanese mizuna, shimeji mushroom, Japanese glass noodles, pressed tofu, carrot, Japanese leeks and beansprout special silver. The chicken tsukune was juicy and had a good bite. The soup, however, was disappointingly thin despite its milky appearance, offering little flavour other than a pronounced saltiness.

IMG_0287
Himowaki Udon 5/5

To further elevate the hotpot experience, 30 add-ons are available, including the Himowaki Udon (a flat and wide sheet of udon noodles, $6.80), a speciality from the Kiryu area in Gunma Prefecture. Unlike regular udon, Himowaki Udon is characterised by its flat appearance and width of up to 10cm. Given its incredible texture and flavour, I can see why it has been gaining much attention from the media. A must-try!

IMG_0254
Miyazaki Wagyu Truffle & Ikura 4/5

There are ten choices of Kamameshi sets to choose from. Each set is served with appetiser of the day, asari clear soup and mini chawanmushi. Ingredients of choice are prepared together, then simmered in a signature stock in an iron pot. We tried the Miyazaki Wagyu Truffle & Ikura ($39) featuring Miyazaki wagyu sirloin steak, served with ikura. An onsen egg is included, which is to be cooked with the rice with the residual heat. While some of the ingredients listed on the menu were missing from our rice, it was overall a satisfying dish, given that the wagyu steak delivered the expected texture and flavours. To savour the mildly burnt rice at the bottom, we poured the accompanying genmai dashi (made of genmaicha, kombu and bonito) into the rice, stirred it, and polished off it!

IMG_0264
Kuro Edamame 4/5

IMG_0263
Black & Red Chicken Karaage 2/52/5

Side dishes are offered as well, such as Black & Red Chicken Karaage (Smoked teriyaki & karamiso glaze , $8.50) and Kuro Edamame. The latter is a premium Tamba Sasayama black edamame with a distinct creamy texture and sweet taste, it was so much more enjoyable than the saltish chicken karaage, which were a tad overfried as well.

IMG_0242

Beverages to complement your htopot experience include an unique Jim Beam Highball Sharing Bottle ($28, up to 3 glasses), special highball flavours, beer, shochu, sakes, plum and shochu cocktails. For non-alcoholic options, you can choose from a selection of Koridashis and Japanese cold brew teas.

Freshly-Harvested Seafood

One of the most popular buffet stations was definitely the spread of Freshly-Harvested Seafood, which featured Maine Lobsters, King Crab Leg, Snow Crab, Oysters, Black Mussels, Gong Gong and more. All the seafood we tried was fresh and sweet, particularly the creamy Oysters, plump King Crab Legs and crunchy Prawns.

IMG_7612
Sushi Rolls

Next to the Freshly-Harvested Seafood, you will also be able to find a number of Sushi Rolls alongside Japanese sides of seaweed, tamago and more.

IMG_7621
Cheese Board

If you are a cheese lover, your eyes will definitey light up at the Cheese Board corner. The myriad of cheeses, condiments and crackers will surely satisfy.

IMG_7671
Cold Cuts and Salads

The beautifully plated Cold Cuts and Salads boards offered dishes such as Smoked Salmon, Prosciutto, Beef Salami, Truffle Somen and Salmon Avocado.

IMG_7637
Hot Selections

Moving down the buffet line, diners will find a range of Hot Selections as well.

IMG_7623
Cheesy Lobsters

On top of the fresh seafood, this corner also featured many seafood dishes, such as the Cheesy Lobsters.

IMG_7645
Herbal Prawns

The Herbal Prawns had a comforting broth base that we enjoyed.

IMG_7648
Soft Shell Crab

I would highly recommend trying the Soft Shell Crab. The meaty crabs were fried perfectly crunchy without being oily.

IMG_7649
Wellness Rice

While we typically avoid having too much carbs at buffets, I absolutely loved the Wellness Rice. As unassuming as it looked, it was generously studded with mushrooms, corn, goji berries and pine nuts. I thoroughly enjoyed how clean yet flavourful it tasted.

IMG_7651
Roasted Pork Belly

Before trying out the Festive Roasts, we also tasted the classic Chinese roasts, including Roasted Pork Belly and Roasted Duck.

IMG_7676
Pan-Seared Foie Gras

A key buffet highlight is dishes prepared à la minute, such as the Pan-Seared Foie Gras and Pasta Alla Ruota. The Pan-Seared Foie Gras was a crowd favourite, served on a wedge of croffle with sweet fig.

IMG_7681

The Festive Roasts station was another noteworthy one, featuring freshly sliced Slow Roasted Bulgogi Glazed Prime Rib, Traditional Roast Turkey and more.

IMG_7699
Christmas Desserts

Fans of sweets would be impressed by the room full of Christmas Desserts! It had everything you can think of, from various flavours of log cakes, tarts, cup desserts, etc.

IMG_7749
Chestnut Roulade & Apricot Compote

Similarly, there was also a live dessert station for the Chestnut Roulade & Apricot Compote.

IMG_7709
Christmas Desserts

The Dining Room is also suitable for bigger group meals, and their Festive Buffet would be an excellent option for the upcoming year-end gatherings.

Pi Food (香江小厨) @ Dhoby Ghaut - Teochew Menu Revamp Led by New Esteemed Chef from China’s Teochew Region

IMG_8539

Renowned Chef Chen Kai Bin, hailing from China's Teochew region, has recently joined Pi Food, bringing with him a wealth of culinary expertise. Boasting an impressive culinary background, Chef Chen served as the Head Chef at the Garden Hotel's 4-star restaurant for eight years.

IMG_7280

With his arrival, Pi Food has undergone a menu revamp, featuring a diverse selection of Teochew dishes.

IMG_8540
Teochew Raw Marinated Crab 4.5/5

Marinated for four hours in a unique mix of Teochew fish sauce, lemon, garlic, chilli and coriander, this Teochew Raw Marinated Crab ($25) will appeal to seafood fans. I especially enjoyed the freshness of the coriander and the zesty-spicy flavours paired with the sweet crab meat. Apart from crab, the restaurant also offers Prawns ($24) and Clams ($16), which are prepared similarly.

IMG_8542
Teochew Braised Platter 4.2/5

The Teochew Braised Platter ($32) offers a variety of braised duck, pork belly, intestine and soft beancurd. Carefully infused with over 20 herbs and spices, it results in a comforting depth of flavour.

IMG_8544

I especially enjoyed the succulent duck slices and my dining companion liked how clean the intestines were.

IMG_8547
Teochew Seafood Claypot Congee 4.2/5

Chef Chen's Teochew Seafood Claypot Congee ($48) combines a medley of prawns, crab and dry scallops in congee. This comforting main was served bubbling hot in the claypot with housemade chilli dips on the side. While the congee leaned more bland than I expected, the freshness and sweetness of the seafood shone through, complemented by the tang of the chilli sauce.

IMG_8541
Steamed Yellow Croaker with Puning Soybean Sauce 4/5

For our fish dish, we had the Steamed Yellow Croaker with Puning Soybean Paste Sauce ($28), which was infused with Puning soybean paste sauce before steaming, complementing the sweetness of the fish.

IMG_8545
Deep-fried Prawn Paste Pork Ribs 4.5/5

The Deep-fried Prawn Paste Pork Ribs ($22) is reminiscent of our local favourite Har Cheong Gai. I thoroughly enjoyed these tender and crisp pieces which were so flavourful!

IMG_8543
Teochew Fried Oyster Omelette 3.8/5

I was less of a fan of their Teochew Fried Oyster Omelette ($16) as it was much more oilier than I preferred. This rendition by Pi Food has a higher ratio of starch to egg.

IMG_8546
Braised Sweet Potato & Yam 4.5/5

Finally, we ended our meal with the Braised Sweet Potato & Yam ($10). It is a lovely dessert for us, with the strips of sweet potatoes and yam encased in a sweet and ultra-thin crust drizzled with a dash of fragrant shallot oil.

Moxie @ Alumni Association Medical Centre (SGH) - A Modern Mediterranean Dining and Lifestyle Destination

Moxie11

Moxie, the fresh-faced Mediterranean dining and lifestyle haven, has gracefully descended upon the Alumni Association Medical Centre (SGH), replacing the erstwhile Kah Soh. Transforming the space into a modern beach house with a lively coastal vibe, Moxie offers a delectable array of shared plates and refreshing cocktails throughout the day.

MoxieRestaurant-1

The ambiance at Moxie is a breath of fresh air—literally. The modern beach house aesthetic is both inviting and chic, transporting diners to sun-soaked coastal getaways. The airy and vibrant atmosphere complements the Mediterranean fare perfectly, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely meal or casual gatherings.

Moxie7
Moxie Dip Platter with Sourdough/Pita 4.5/5

Kickstarting the coastal journey, we dived into the Moxie Dip Platter with Sourdough ($22). The platter offers a trio of delightful dips—Spinach Yogurt, Smashed Kabocha, and Whipped Ricotta. Each dip is a star in its own right, but if one has to be crowned, the Whipped Ricotta takes the throne. The interplay of textures and flavours, coupled with the choice of either Sourdough or Pita, is a crowd-pleaser.

Moxie16
Burrata 4.8/5

The Italian Burrata ($19) is a masterpiece. Paired with pickled red beets, charred grapes, pistachio dukkah, and red beet gel, the dish is a symphony of colours and flavours. The creaminess of the burrata finds harmony with the tanginess of the beets and sweetness of the grapes, creating a palate-pleasing experience.

Moxie25
Spiced Corn Ribs 4.5/5

The Spiced Corn Ribs ($16) are a revelation. Dressed in cumin-infused aioli, grated feta, and lime, the corn bursts with flavors. Eating it like a rib, squeezing lime included, adds an interactive element to the dish, enhancing the sweetness of the corn.

Moxie12
Grouper Crudo 4.5/5

The Grouper Crudo ($25) is a highlight for seafood enthusiasts. Local flower grouper meets Zhoug coulis, pickled Japanese cucumber, and diced red radish, creating a refreshing and vibrant dish. The coriander seeds sprinkled on top add a final layer of complexity.

Moxie31
Arugula Pesto Orecchiette 4.2/5

The Arugula Pesto Orecchiette ($38) is a flavorful pasta dish. Al dente orecchiette, sautéed prawns and scallops, crab meat, shaved parmesan, fresh arugula, and toasted pine nuts come together harmoniously, offering a medley of textures and flavors.

Moxie33
Catch of The Day - Fillet (200g) 4.2/5

The Catch of The Day (Fillet, $42, 200g) showcases the versatility of Moxie. With a weekly rotation of fish, the pan-fried fillet with clarified butter, browned almonds, and capers is a delightful dish. The moist fish comes with a hint of smokiness, nuttiness from almonds, and tanginess from capers, creating a symphony of flavours.

Moxie49
Moxie Mille Feuille 4.8/5

Save room for dessert, as Moxie's Mille Feuille ($19) is a showstopper. Layers of filo pastry, whipped cream cheese, strawberries, and blueberries, crowned with kataifi and raspberry, deliver a sweet ending with myriad textures.

Moxie47
Dark Chocolate Mousse 4.5/5

Concluding the feast is the Dark Chocolate Mousse ($16). Rich dark chocolate meets hazelnut ice cream, berry compote, toasted hazelnuts, and streusel, creating a well-balanced and indulgent dessert.

MoxieRestaurant-7

Moxie succeeds in bringing the vibrant flavours of the Mediterranean to Singapore's shore. From the captivating ambience to the thoughtfully crafted dishes, each aspect of the dining experience at Moxie reflects a commitment to quality and creativity. The menu's diversity caters to various palates, ensuring that Moxie stands out as a delightful addition to Singapore's F&B scene. Whether you're craving a leisurely lunch or a lively dinner, Moxie beckons with its coastal charm and culinary prowess.

LAVI TACO @ Pearl’s Hill Terrace - Hidden Al Fresco Mexician Dining Up on Pearl's Hill

IMG_7137

It takes a walk to reach LAVI TACO at Pearl's Hill Terrace, whether or not you're heading there from Chinatown or Outram Park MRT. But make your way up, and you will be welcomed to an al fresco dining space with laid-back and chill vibes, perfect for a night to unwind over food and drinks with friends.

IMG_7111

The brand prides itself on offering an authentic spread of Mexican fare.

IMG_7119
Nachos 4/5

The classic starter of Nachos ($15) came with crunchy corn tortilla chips and jalapeno pickles, with salsa verde, pico degallo and sour cream to pair. At another $5 top-up, you can opt for the loaded option that provides a topping choice of birria oxtail & brisket or pulled mushrooms.

IMG_7130
Birria 4/5

Available in limited portions daily, the Birria ($25) tacos are the one to go for if you are a fan of beef and bolder flavours. The slow-cooked oxtail and brisket, braised in a spicy and aromatic birria broth, is topped with melted cheese and held between tortillas. These are served with an additional cup of broth for you to dunk in or enjoy as soup.

IMG_7125
Pulled Mushroom 4.2/5

I first tried LAVI TACO's vegetarian Pulled Mushroom ($18) tacos at their gourmet food truck pop-up in Resorts World Sentosa. I enjoyed the generously filled shells with a very well-textured mushroom filling. The plant-based slow-cooked pulled mushrooms were smoky and flavourful, complemented well with a refreshing and tangy mix of red cabbage, cheese, cilantro, pico de gallo, sour cream and salsa verde.

IMG_7135
Taco Meat Platter 4.5/5

Named the "ultimate taco experience", the Taco Meat Platter ($129 for 3-4 pax) is the perfect choice if you're here in a group. The interactive DIY element here adds an extra layer of fun.

Loaded up and served on a tray, it features rows of various taco toppings, including flame-grilled steak, crunchy Argentinean garlic prawns, chipotle pepper chicken thigh, alongside grilled vegetables, an assortment of taco condiments, and a good number of corn tortillas. A smaller portion that feeds approximately 2 pax is also available at $69.

IMG_7114

While the prices are on a slightly higher end, they are all nett, without gst and service charges. I would highly recommend making a reservation here https://reserve.oddle.me/kultyard before heading down!
