Tian Cheng Food (天成美食) @ Tiong Bahru Market & Food Centre

IMG_3294ed

Having been to Tiong Bahru Market and Food Centre numerous time, this is my first time visiting Tian Cheng Food (天成美食). The stall sells a lot of Chinese light bites and snacks. What caught my attention was the fried to golden brown prawn fritter.

IMG_1457ed
Prawn Fritter 4/5

The Prawn Fritter ($1.50) is deep fried to golden brown with a whole prawn on it. It is to be eaten together with the shell. Do be careful if children is eating it as the shell of the prawn head may cut the tongue if one is not careful.

IMG_1455ed
Prawn Fritter 4/5

You can ask the stall owner to cut the prawn fritter, so that it is easier for consumption. I like to have it together with the chilli sauce. The prawn which can be eaten with the shell is crispy giving it a contrasting texture on top of the pillowy, doughy base, almost like bread.

The prawn fritter may not be delicacy but it definitely is one of those local snack or if you want to call it street food that is comforting and enjoyable.

A Seafood Fete from Norway at Sheraton Towers Singapore

IMG_3025ed

From 01 November to 08 November 2015, Sheraton Towers Singapore will collaborate with Guest Chef Markus Peter Dybwad to present a Norwegian seafood extravaganza using various Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified produce. Working with the culinary team at Sheraton Towers Singapore, Chef Markus has specially curated a series of menu for DOMVS, The Italian Restaurant (1-4 Nov) and The Dining Room (5-8 Nov).

IMG_3019ed
Sashimi 4/5 and Canapes 3.5/5

I am privilege to be given a glimpse of what to expect from the week long Seafood Fete from Norway. Starting from the The Dining Room, the buffet spread will offer the finest and freshest seafood from the cold, clear waters of Norway, best showcases in the purest Sashimi form. For some light bites, we had a variety of Canapes that once again highlighted the seafood.

IMG_3027ed
Lobster Bisque 4.8/5

This is not your ordinary Lobster Bisque. The robust flavour of the lobster bisque is further accentuated with a hint of spiciness. This has set a new benchmark for me.

IMG_3023ed
Salmon Trout Carpaccio with Horseradish and Roe 4.2/5

At DOMVS, The Italian Restaurant. Chef Markus has created a 3-course Set Lunch ($52/pax), 5-course Set Dinner ($90/pax) and a White Truffle Wine Dinner ($168/pax). The white truffle wine dinner is only for 4 November 2015.

The clean taste of the Salmon Trout Carpaccio, paired with the horseradish and roe was beautiful on the palate with occasion tickling from the heat of the horseradish and popping surprises from the roe.

IMG_3029ed
Atlantic Cod with Polenta and Sage Jus 3/5

I have mixed views on the Atlantic Cod with Polenta and Sage Jus. The poached Atlantic cod has an interesting texture that is quite similar to scallop. The whole execution was a bit one dimensional for me. I felt that it needed some tanginess to zest up the dish and bring out the flavour of the fish more.

IMG_3031ed
Panna Cotta with Lingonberry and Sago 4.5/5

The Panna Cotta with Lingonberry and Sago was the perfect ending for the night. There were so many different textures and flavours at play here. I was already quite full and I was telling myself to just have a scoop or two to try but I ended up cleaning the whole plate.

For the first 8 diners to enjoy the Seafood Fete from Norway promotion, Sheraton Towers Singapore is giving away a 500g Norwegian Smoked Salmon each. Terms and Conditions apply.

Sugalight @ The Rail Mall

IMG_2765ed

One of my greatest weaknesses is towards ice cream. Once I started on a pint tub, I can simply go on and finish it in one go. Leaving me feeling sinfulIy guilty. I first get to know Sugalight back in my early days when I started blogging. Sugalight is a guilt-free ice cream, made without sugar and cream. It is some sort of a reunion with Sugalight as it has moved to the west at The Rail Mall, while I also re-located to West Coast.

IMG_2752ed

Sugalight ice cream is made from a special recipe that does not use sugar. It is sweetened with premium natural sweeteners including Xylitol and Stevia. Xylitol has zero net carbs, prevents tooth decay and does not cause dangerous spikes in diabetic blood glucose. As no cream is used in the recipe, it is naturally low in fat and cholesterol. Compared to other premium ice creams which contains around 17% fat and cholesterol, Sugalight ice cream only has 9%. Lastly it contains beneficial prebiotics to help maintain a healthy digestive system.

IMG_2762ed

At Sugalight, it offers an eclectic selection of more than 21 flavours ranging from standard to premium flavours.

Premium - Bailey's Irish Cream, Italian Hazelnut, Jamaican Rum Raisin, Mao Shan Wang Durian, Strawberry Cheesecake, Valrhona Chocolate

Standard - Cappuccino, Caramel, Chocomint, Coconut, Cookie Monster, Madagascan Vanilla, Mango Sorbet, Marvellous Milo, Matcha Green Tea, Purple Yam, Pulut Hitam, Roasted Black Sesame, Rocky Chocolate, Strawberry Bliss, Very Berry Drizzle

Sugalight has also recently created 4 new flavours in Froyo Vanilla, Champedak, Young Coconut Sorbet and Soy French Dark Chocolate.

IMG_2769ed

So how do I personally find Sugalight? Compared to many other ice cream places, the ice cream at Sugalight is lighter in texture and not as sweet. Without the use of cream, it is not as creamy too. Nevertheless, it seems to bring out the distinct flavour of the ingredient more. Weighting on the health benefit, the difference may be insignificant, especially for diabetic patient.

IMG_2770ed

If you are planning any corporate function/event, party or charity event, Sugalight can setup ice cream booth complete with friendly scoopers to cater for your requirement. For more details, please contact Sugalight.

IMG_2776ed

If you find that Sugalight located at The Railway Mall is too far to travel to, worry not as Sugalight has setup an Online Home Delivery Service. Free home delivery for purchase above $60. The home delivery comes in 2 sizes, pints and 100ml cups. The standard pints - $10.50, premium pints - $13 and 100ml cups - $3.00/3.80.

5 Little Monkeys Cafe @ PICO Creative Centre

IMG_2747ed

When I heard about the 5 Little Monkeys Cafe, my first thought is that it is another hipster cafe serving the usual mircowave heat up food and supplier sourced cakes and pastries. I am glad that my curiosity just like the monkeys, brought me to the cafe located on the eleventh floor of an office building in Lavender. Taking up the whole floor on the eleventh level, the cafe is huge and spacious, with a great unblock city view.

IMG_2737ed
Gourmet Hamburger 3.5/5

The menu at 5 Little Monkeys Cafe is quite extensive, offering items from Western Delights to Peranakan cuisine. We started with the Gourmet Hamburger ($11.80) with fries and salad from the Western Delights menu. It was quite a good burger which was moist and juicy. There are other western fares such as pizzas, sandwiches and wraps on the menu too.

IMG_2732ed
Kueh Pie Tee 3/5

For some small bites, we had the Kueh Pie Tee ($3.8 for 3pc / $6 for 5pc). I felt that the pie tee cups was a bit too thick in textures, not allowing me to appreciate the spicy and sweet mixture of thinly sliced vegetables and prawn.

IMG_2733ed
Sambal Prawn with Petai 4/5

The surprise discovery at 5 Little Monkeys Cafe is their Peranakan dishes. The Sambal Prawn with Petai ($6.50) comes with a good spicy kick, well coated around the sweetness of the crunchy prawns.

IMG_2734ed
Beef Rendang 4.2/5

The scrumptious Beef Rendang ($10,80) was one of my favourite among the dishes I tried. The succulent beef cooked in a rich and aromatic rempah is bursting with the robust flavour with every bite of it.

IMG_2736ed
Chap Chye 4/5

There are many interpretation of the Chap Chye ($5) and I would say the version by Chef Goh is unlike what I have eaten before. The mixed vegetable stew is cooked to a crunchy instead of softness. It also is not as sweet as most chap chye elsewhere.

IMG_2743ed
Fish Maw Soup 3.8/5

I really appreciate the effort of the chef in the Fish Maw Soup ($10.80). He made the effort to stuffed the fish maw with minced chicken meat. The soup was clear with mild sweetness of the cabbage. Chef also added a dash of Chinese wine to bring up the flavour.

IMG_2739ed
Assam Fish Head Curry 4.5/5

The highlight of the night has to be the Assam Fish Head Curry ($35). I could not resist ordering a plate of rice to soak up the delicious curry that has a mix of spiciness, tanginess and creaminess. The huge fish head is good to serve 3 to 4 pax. As only limited quantities is available each day, it is best to pre-order it. Do also allow 20-30 minutes of waiting time.

I personally think 5 Little Monkeys Cafe is a hidden gem serving good Peranakan cuisine, especially the Assam Fish Head Curry. Furthermore, who would expect to find a cafe on the eleventh floor of an office building. I am glad that my curiosity brought me to discover this little gem in Lavender.

MEATliquor SIN @ Duxton Road

DSC_4779

MeatLiquor SIN, one of the most talked about burger joints in town, just launched a rather unusual Saturday Brunch - Hours of free flow of burgers and tons of booze, with a DJ cutting tracks to wake the usual sleepy town of Duxton Hill on a weekend afternoon. They called it EATs, BEATs & TREATs, an alternative that set to baffle your plan for a Saturday meal. So are you going to have a Brunch, lunch, or an early dinner?

IMG_1388

The debut was held just last Saturday. We tend to sleep in on Saturdays, so starting the brunch at 1pm is more than welcome. I wasn't the only one who arrived promptly, or, feeling hungry to be specific. A handful was already queuing at the entrance. Apparently, a big group was trying to make their payment in cash. It doesn't come cheap, at $90++ per pax.

bits & bobs

A very straight forward menu. Sides, burgers, and alcohol, with a couple of add ons if you are willing to top up some cash. Judging by the orders round me, their buffalo wings and sambas fries are very very popular. I recommend their Gunpowder Shrimps and Mac n Cheese. The shrimps were very succulent, with a layer of crispy batter. Mac and cheese is actually fried cheese sticks, but it's by far one of the better ones. Best to have it hot, when the gluely cheese oozes out real quick. If I'm not wrong, Camembert cheese is used. (I was so excited that I forgot to take the cheese in action!). Do remember to ask for their blue cheese dips, one of the best ever! It doesn't just go well with all the finger bites, pouring it over my burger also gives me a really delicious 'blue cheese burger'.

DSC_4782

4 burgers to choose from, either chicken or beef. HDB Chicken Tower, Parma Chicken, Dead Hippie and Bacon Cheese. The chicken fillet is served the same way in both chicken burgers. What makes the difference is its accompaniment and sauce. One is with hash brown, which I thought is quite delectable, the other is parma ham. As for the beef, Bacon cheese is self explanatory. Dead hippie has a slightly twist to it, with the beef patty being halved, and comes with a special mayonnaise. Somehow, I prefer this among all. It seems juicer, and the mayonnaise reacts well with the smoky sweet patty.

hdb, bc

Overall, very hearty burgers with solid patties. I wish the buns could be airier. Theirs are kind of too dense for me. Their Sherbets are slightly watered down, best options are properly still their craft and bottled beers.

hdb

The finale to this whole Saturday afternoon is not just the Treats given to us in a canvas bag but their Neh Neh Pop ice creams! Out of the 4 flavours, I tried three - milo dinosaur, strawberry pockie and Bahkula, which is my favourite. Spiked with crunchy pretzels, every bite is a combustion of taste and texture - the bittersweet dark chocolate coating, the sweet creamy vanilla core and the savoury pretzels, it is simply heavenly! Their strawberry pockie is also quite decadent- vanilla ice cream with huge strawberry swirls, coated with white chocolate. So yummy!

neh neh pok strawberry pockie

Little did I expect myself to leave after 4pm. So did every of the customers I assume. Although weekends are meant to go slow, but I wish the waiting time for the food could be shorter. When the full crowd settled it, it could take almost half an hour for our next order to reach our table. So what I suggest it, the moment you have settled down, you should go straight into ordering all the food that you want, and maybe start placing your next order when you are almost done. Bear in mind that the ordering stops at 4pm.

IMG_1285

I was somewhat exhausted by the time I walked out of the place, with all the shouting over the loud music and the food coma setting in. However, I could see that whoever were here, and still there by the time I left, have enjoyed themselves. With the amount of food that you are going to take, I'm sure it will provide you with all the energy that you need for your weekend. That, I don't think your usual eggs benedict is anywhere near.

EATs, BEATs & TREATs dates until the end of the year are:
- Saturday 14th November (1pm - 5pm)
- Saturday 12th December (1pm - 5pm)

Terra by Seita @ Tras Street

IMG_2816ed

A new kid on the block has taken over the defunct Buttero at Tras Street. Offering Italian-Japanese cuisine is Terra by Seita, helmed by Chef-owner Seita Nakahara. Chef Seita is not new to the F&B scene, having worked in Enoteca L'Operetta as Executive Chef since 2010. Now he has ventured out on his own to set up the new restaurant to continue wining his customers' palate with his culinary skill, passion and philosophy for producing fine, authentic Italian cuisine.

IMG_2813ed
Iberico Ham with Burrata 4/5

I am privileged to be able to try Chef Seita's interpretation of Italian-Japanese cuisine during the soft launch period. Our Degustation Menu ($98++) started with the amouse bouch of Iberico Ham with Burrata. A classic combination that was pleasing to the palate to whet up the appetite for the rest of the night.

IMG_2815ed
Scallop from Salfutu 3.5/5

For starter, we have the Scallop from Salfutu. The huge and plump Hokkaido scallops are cooked in a pot of gratin, mushroom, herbal butter and capsicum puree. This somehow reminded me about the traditional Italian tomato based seafood stew, giving a glimpse of the Chef's interpretation of Italian-Japanese cuisine.

IMG_2817ed
Spaghetti with Sea Urchin and Bottarga 4/5

Spaghetti with Sea Urchin and Bottarga is one of Chef Seita's signature dish and I am glad that I finally get to try it at Terra. This is simply luxury on the plate with the al dente spaghetti tossed in the house-cured bottarga from fresh mullet roe and the unami sea urchin. I was expecting the richness to hit me like a tank but instead it turned out to be rather subtle.

IMG_2820ed
Tajima Wagyu Beef 4.5/5

The highlight of the night has to be the Tajima Wagyu Beef. Chef has cooked the shoulder loin of the beef to a beautiful pink. The wagyu beef which has lesser marbling was pure enjoyment with each bite of the beef bursting with the full flavour.

IMG_2822ed
Tiramisu with Shine Muscat Grapes 4/5

Ending the Degustation menu is the Tiramisu with Shine Muscat Grapes. The tiramisu was moist and light for a pleasing finishing. However the highlight for me is the Shine Muscat Grapes. The priced grape costs around $200 to $250 a bunch. I am so glad that I finally get to try these jade colour like grapes which is sweet and does not come with any tartness or sourness.

IMG_2826ed

I enjoyed Chef Seita's interpretation of Italian-Japanese cuisine. However it does not come cheap as premium ingredients are used. You are paying for the quality. Nevertheless, Terra also offers 3 Course Omakase Lunch ($42++) and 4 Course Omakase Lunch ($58++) if you have a tight budget.

New Taste Restaurant (新嘉飨) @ Macpherson Road

IMG_2886ed

Macpherson Road is not somewhere that I will go often for a meal but after visiting New Taste Restaurant (新嘉飨), it seems I have more reason to do so now. Helming the kitchen is 26 years old Chef and co-owner Cao Yong 曹勇. Cao Yong is a new citizen having come to Singapore with his parents when he is 15 years old.

IMG_2901ed

Just recently this year, Cao Yong represented Singapore in the World Chef Championship in Shanghai (世界厨王上海争霸赛) and came in first place in the team competition. He is also the team leader of the 4 men team that made Singapore Chinese cuisine proud beating teams from other countries especially China.

IMG_2883ed
Chilled Pork Belly 3.5/5 and Smoked Duck 4/5

Dinner at New Taste Restaurant started with some appetisers. We had the Chilled Pork Belly with Garlic Sauce ($6.90) and Smoked Duck with Pickled Ginger ($8.90). The chilled pork bell paired with the cucumber whetted up the appetite with its refreshing and crunchy finishing. The smoked duck was tender and flavourful. Eaten together with the pickled ginger, it helps to cut through the greasiness and gaminess.

IMG_2877ed
Handmade Crispy Long Cheese Stick 4.2/5

The Handmade Crispy Long Cheese Stick ($12.90) will be enjoyed by both the young and old. The cheese stick is filled with a mixture of cheese and potato. I was telling my dinner friends that it actually felt like eating samosa but in a stick form.

IMG_2896ed
Vegetable Juice 4.5/5

I know of one Chinese restaurant that serves the Vegetable Juice ($4.90) but it was off menu. Hence I am very happy to find it at New Taste Restaurant and it does it even better. The juice is blended together with Hong Kong Cai Xin, Pineapple and Sour Plum. The other partner of the restaurant explained to us that the white cloudy appearance of the juice shows that it is freshly blended. This is a very refreshing drink especially for the humid Singapore weather. It does not have that earthy vegetable taste at all.

IMG_2890ed
Marmite Chicken 3.8/5

Moving on to the mains, we started with the Marmite Chicken which is fried to crispy. The sweet marmite marination topped with sesame seeds is quite enjoyable with the sweet bitter aftertaste.

IMG_2893ed
Deep Fried Spinach Beancurd with Fresh Mushroom and Black Truffle 4/5

The Deep Fried Spinach Beancurd with Fresh Mushroom and Black Truffle ($12.90) is a classic dish with the homemade silky beancurd. The earthy black truffle seems to give it an additional layer of flavour with the carrot and mushroom providing the extra texture.

IMG_2892ed
Crispy Fried Prawn, Fruit Salad with Wasabi Cream 3.8/5

The Crispy Fried Prawn, Fruit Salad with Wasabi Cream ($21.90) received mixed reviews. The huge prawn was fresh and crunchy. However I find the wasabi cream was on the sweet side missing the pungnet wasabi kick.

IMG_2898ed
Stir Fried Udon with Homemade XO Sauce and Black Truffle 4/5

At New Taste restaurant, besides the eclectic selection of cooked dishes, there are also one meal dish such as the Stir Fried Udon with Homemade XO Sauce and Black Truffle ($12.90) for those that just one to grab a quick meal. I understand that it is not easy to stir fried udon if the chef does not have a good control of his wok. The noodle can end up too soft or lumpy. My plate of udon turned out to have a nice wok hei with almost al dente bite to the udon.

IMG_2888ed
Signature Crab Porridge 4.5/5

The highlight at New Taste restaurant has to be their Signature Crab Porridge that is good for 2-3 pax. Currently it is having promotion at $19.90 (usual price $39.90). The huge bowl of porridge comes with a whole mud crab. The porridge is the grainy type like Teochew porridge. What made the crab porridge so delicious has to the broth that is cooked with chicken stock and pumpkin. I think I can eat his everyday.

IMG_2903ed
Lemon Glass Jelly 3/5

Dinner at New Taste restaurant finished on a sweet note with the Lemon Glass Jelly ($3.90). It was a refreshing and light dessert to finish the dinner. If the lemongrass flavour can be more distinct will be perfect.

IMG_2876ed

New Taste Restaurant is actually split into 2 sections. One section offers ala carte dishes of modern fine chinese fare at affordable price, the other section offers steamboat buffet.
