Dan's Steaks Bar & Grill @ The Star Vista - A Home-grown Steakhouse By Ex-Radio DJ Daniel Ong

IMG_4507

Dan's Steaks has expanded into 4 outlets in Singapore, one of which is at Star Vista, which I visited recently. It is known for its large cuts up to 1.2kg. House cuts that are good for one are available as well. To complement your steaks, the restaurant has also curated a list of wholesome starters and sides and a considered selection of wines, cocktails and craft beers, including the much beloved Brewlander.

IMG_4493
Pan-seared Hokkaido Scallops 4.5/5

We started with Pan-seared Hokkaido Scallops ($27), which is very well received by customers. The scallops were served piping hot in aromatic garlic butter sauce and were exceptionally plump and succulent. I love the charred sides that gave an edge to their texture. It would have been perfect should the accompanying toasts be just plain toasts to sop up the garlic butter.

IMG_4516
Austige Wagyu Hanging Tender 3.8/5

From House Cuts, we had Austige Wagyu Hanging Tender (230g $46 with one side) served with Chimichurri and Dan's special mustard. It is one of the more exclusive cuts the restaurant offers with a limited daily quantity. It's well-liked for its leanness and beefy flavour. Ours was beautifully charred, forming a tantalising crust. Dan's special mustard has a hint of fiery kick, which I reckoned it's from the use of wasabi, and together with the tangy Chimichurri, the sauces cut the meat's richness. However, I found the steak lacked some salt to bring out its full flavour.

IMG_4524
Fresh Creamed Spinach 3.8/5

Each House Cut comes with one side of choice. I had the Fresh Creamed Spinach that came bright and sunny with a fried sunny side-up. Though it was just a dish of spinach and cream, I love the idea of beefing up the side with a fried sunny side-up and mixing the egg yolk in helped to make it creamier.

IMG_4503
Dan's Mac & Cheese 3.5/5

The sides are available in generous portions for a la carte orders. Dan's Mac & Cheese ($14) with triple cheese is definitely a crowd-pleaser for all cuts. It was done al dente and wasn't overly creamy, but it was relatively mild tasting. Adding some sharp-tasting cheeses will help to give it some oomph.

IMG_4521
Pan-Roasted Mushroom 4.8/5

The much-recommended Pan-Roasted Mushroom ($14) featuring a trio of mushrooms is one of the best I had. These well-roasted morsels, especially those with caramelised edges, were so flavoursome with aromatic white wine, balsamic and garlic. It is a must-have if you drop by Dan's Steaks.

IMG_4484

This Star Vista outlet has a very cosy ambience, with warm natural lights from its glass facade. The drinks menu is designed to go with the food menu. Diners can look forward to good craft beers and a good selection of wines.

Charr'd @ Changi Road - Singapore's First Halal Restaurant Serving A5 Kuroge Wagyu From Mie Prefecture

Charr'd16

Charr'd is a new halal steakhouse by the same team behind Tomahawk King. It is the first halal restaurant in Singapore to buy and import whole A5 Wagyu Kuroge cows from Japan.

Charr'd8
Salmon Cube Tare

We started our meal with the Salmon Cube Tare ($14) with snow pea shoots, caramelized onion, and a house bearnaise sauce. The charred salmon belly nuggets are glazed with yakiniku no tare giving it a nice sweet and fruity finish on top of the smoky char.

Charr'd14

Charr'd16

Great for sharing and gets to enjoy the different A5 Wagyu Kuroge's cuts is the Heavenly Meat Board ($198) that comes with 100gm A5 Mie Sirloin, 100gm A5 Mie Ribeye, 100gm A5 Mie Tenderloin and 400gm Australian Hangar Steak. The meat board is suitable for 3-4 pax. It also comes with two complimentary sauces of choice. (house bearnaise, chimichurri, wasabi mayo, yakiniku no tare, ghost peppercorn mayo). Between the cuts, my preferred is the ribeye for its meat and fats ratio.

Charr'd5
Cream'd Moonlight Spinach

We had the Cream'd Moonlight Spinach ($13), and Charr'd Broccoli ($12) for sides to go along with the beef. I am a fan of creamy spinach, and at Charr'd, it elevated the creaminess by adding an onsen egg on top of the rich Parmigiano-Reggiano cream.

Charr'd13
Charr'd Broccoli

A more textural option is the Charr'd Broccoli, whereby the crunchy broccoli is charred over an open fire and tossed with roasted pine nuts, chilli shavings, bonito flakes and an appetite-whetting miso vinegar.

Charr'd1

You can also wash everything down with a selection of Mocktails from the bar. Unwind and chill in an unpretentious space serving up only good-cut meats, quality dishes and no-frill sides for an alternative way of enjoying meats and more. Grab a mocktail, a few friends and have dessert after dinner. Charr'd is here so you can chill out.

Beast Restaurant and Bar @ Duxton Hill - Savour The Art Of Steak At Beast Duxton

Beast45

Inspired by North America steakhouses, Beast Restaurant and Bar, located at Duxton Hill, combines a modern steakhouse with chic bar vibes. Setting into the restaurant, you are first greeted by the bar. Then, stepping behind the curtain separating the bar and dining area, diners transform into an intimate dining room with exposed brick walls and leather banquettes.

TheBeastRestaurant-3

TheBeastRestaurant-4

The kitchen is helmed by Chef Muhamad, formerly from Santi Marina Bay Sands, Bam!, Gaig Singapore, and Park Grill in Kuala Lumpur. The food is centred around a specially designed grill and a special mix of Binchotan Charcoal, oak wood and lychee wood.

Beast13
Live Pacific Oysters 4.5/5

We started our dinner with some Live Pacific Oysters ($38/ $72) that were freshly shucked, fresh and briny. The pairing of ponzu, kimchi and avruga caviar brightened the enjoyment.

Beast30
Smoked Tuna Tataki 4/5

The other starter we had was the Smoked Tuna Tataki ($32). The smoked tuna, foie gras and terrine are layered like fallen domino blocks, paired with Aji Amarillo and hazelnut. It has a delightfully fruity sweetness from the Aji Amarillo, while the foie gras gives an extra soothing creaminess.

Beast39
Grilled Bone Marrow 4.2/5

To go with our mains, we ordered a couple of sides to go along. First, we had the Grilled Bone Marrow ($22/2pc). It smelled so good that we started on it before the mains arrived. I love the sweetness from wine-braised caramelized onion and bacon bits that accentuated the taste profile.

Beast25
Creamy Spinach 4.5

I decided to get some vegetables to our diet, so I went for the Creamy Spinach ($14), which consists of feta cheese and raisins. It is one of my favourite side dishes for any steakhouse.

Beast44
Sanchoku MB7 Australian Grained Fed Wagyu Picanha 4.8/5

Unique at Beast is the extensive range of different cuts of meat ranging from Sanchoku Australian Grain Fed Wagyu Picanha ($68, 300g), Margaret River Australian Wagyu Tenderloin ($58, 180g) to Miyazaki Japanese A5 Wagyu Ribeye ($108, 200g). We had the Sanchoku MB7 Australian Grained Fed Wagyu Picanha cooked to medium pink. The priced cut with its beautiful marbling is tender and juicy. The beef is so flavourful on its own that no extra seasoning or sauces are needed.

Beast47
Chilean Sea Bass 4.2/5

There are other protein choices for those who don't eat beef, such as the Chilean Sea Bass ($42). The moist fish is grilled to perfection, floating on a bed of green lentils and sake foam.

Beast62
Earl Grey Tea Flan

Not to be missed are their desserts too. I definitely recommend you to save some space for the them. We had the Earl Grey Tea Flan ($14) and 72% Chocolate Cake ($16). The Earl Grey Tea Flan made from goats milk is light, but well-flavoured for a tealific finishing, paired with Madagascar vanilla ice cream.

Beast66
72% Chocolate Cake 4.2/5

For the sweet tooth that prefers something richer and more intense, the 72% Chocolate Cake is a good choice. The chocolate is moist and soft, like tiramisu's texture, paired with salted caramel ice cream.

Beast6

As the saying goes, never judge a book by its cover, don't be misled by the front of the restaurant thinking it is a drinking hole. The food here impressed me. It's one of those restaurants that I made a mental note to return or if my friend asked me for a recommendation.

Go-Ang Pratunam Chicken Rice @ Vivocity - Thailand Bib Gourmand Awardee Opens 2nd Outlet In Singapore

GoAng10

After the opening of their first restaurant at Nex Shopping Centre, the Michelin Bib Gourmand 2018 and 2019 awardee - Go-Ang Pratunam Chicken Rice has opened its second outlet at Vivocity. Besides the chicken rice, the restaurant also offers a communal dining experience with selection of soups, braised pork, cooked dishes and desserts.

GoAng11
Half Chicken 3.8/5

Since Go-Ang is specialised in the steamed chicken, we definitely have to try it. We ordered Half Chicken ($16) which to my surprise it is very well executed. It is tender with gelatine skin. Unlike the type of tangy and garlicky chilli sauce we used in Singapore, their sauce is a concoction of fermented chilli, fermented soy beans, coarsely chopped ginger,

GoAng5
Fried Tofu Cube with Thai Sweet Chilli Sauce 3.5/5

With a soft innard and crispy exterior is the Fried Tofu Cube with Thai Sweet Chilli Sauce ($8). It is drenched in a sweet chilli sauce and topped with peanuts.

GoAng7
Stir Fried Basil Chicken with Kai Lan 4/5

Cooked to a delectable crunch is the Stir Fried Basil Chicken with Kai Lan ($8). It also comes packed with fish sauce aroma, coupled with hint of spiciness.

GoAng4
Tri-Egg with Poached Spinach 3.8/5

Another vegetable dish we tried is the Tri-Egg with Poached Spinach ($8). The sweetness of the spinach is brought out in the flavourful stock. I enjoyed the scrambled texture of the egg but it lacked the saltiness from the salted egg.

GoAng15
Chai Poh Omelette 4.5/5

Not to be missed is the Chai Poh Omelette ($6.50). It uses sweet preserved radish instead of the salty type. What actually wow me is the fluffy texture of omelette. This is probably one of the best I have eaten.

To be frank, if Go-Ang sells only the chicken rice, they probably will not made it in Singapore. Not that it is not good but there are just too many choices in Singapore for chicken rice. From the crowded restaurant, they probably has found the successful formula in offering other cooked dishes complementing the chicken rice, providing a communal experience.
