BrotzietOktoberfest34
Munchner Weisswurst 4.8/5

Not to be missed is the Munchenr Weisswurst ($15), better known as the white sausage. The traditional Bavarian sausage is made from minced veal and pork, flavoured with parsley, lemon, onion, ginger and spices. By the way, unlike other sausages, weisswurst is never consumed with its skin on. The most popular way to enjoy this sausage is by cutting it lengthwise, folding it open in the middle and "rolling" the meat out to the side with a knife.

BrotzietOktoberfest36
Pretzel 4.5/5

Traditionally, weisswurst is eaten with pretzels and sweet mustard. Hence, how not to order some Pretzels ($17) to go along with the weisswurst.

BrotzietOktoberfest32
Brotzeit Oktoberfestplatte 4.2/5

Great for sharing is the new Brotzeit Oktoberfestplatte ($145). The festive platter is filled with goodies and great for four to six persons who can tuck into the Signature Pork Knuckle, Nürnberger Stadtwurst, Thüringer Sausages, Fried Chicken and Meatloaf. Complete and enjoy the platter with a 3L Erdinger Oktoberfest beer in a barrel for $228++, only available for dine-in.

West Coast 503 Teochew Fishball Noodle (潮洲魚圓麵) - $2.50 Bowl Of Noodle With Gigantic Fish Balls

WestCoast503TeochewNoodle-02

West Coast 503 Teochew Fishball Noodle (潮洲魚圓麵), located in the quiet neighbourhood of Teban Garden, is an unassuming stall inside a coffeeshop on the second floor of the HDB block above the Sheng Siong Supermarket. It is my first time venturing into the area, and I decided to try the stall as it looks promising.

WestCoast503TeochewNoodle-16
Teochew Fish Ball Noodle 4/5

The stall sells a good variety of noodle dishes. If I didn't count wrongly, it has fourteen noodle dishes on the menu with interesting options such as Snow Crab Noodle, Abalone Noodle and more. On top of that, it also sells other ala carte items such as fishcake and Wu Xiang.

WestCoast503TeochewNoodle-21

What is remarkable is I can still find a bowl of noodles for $2.50. I have the Teochew Fish Ball Noodle, which comes with fishballs, fish cake slices, fish dumpling, pork slices, and minced pork.

WestCoast503TeochewNoodle-11

WestCoast503TeochewNoodle-07

I decided to go for mee pok, cooked to a nice bite. The chilli sauce and vinegar mixture goes well with the noodle, but I prefer it to be more piquant. The highlight goes to the fish ball, which is gigantic and super springy.

WestCoast503TeochewNoodle-08

Overall, West Coast 503 Teochew Fishball Noodle sells an above average bowl of noodles, and for $2.50 I am not complaining. I don't mind returning if it is nearer to my home.

Pang Zi Durian @ Jurong West - Neighbourhood Durian Specialty Cafe

Pang Zi 1

Looking for durian treats but can't wait for the durian season to arrive? Pang Zi Durian is a neighbourhood durian speciality cafe aiming to offer a wide range of handcrafted durian desserts that contain no preservatives to satisfy your cravings. They've recently launched three new innovative durian creations.
Pang Zi 2
Durian Milkshake 3.5/5

The first dessert we had was their Durian Milkshake ($6.50). It was creamy and smooth, with a thick consistency. Mix the shake thoroughly to enjoy the durian flesh on the bottom. The shake tastes more on the milky end, while the durian notes are much lighter. It can get quite heavy for some, hence would recommend sharing this with a friend.

Pang Zi 4
Mao Shan Wang Spaghettieis 3.8/5

The unique Mao Shan Wang Spaghettieis ($11.90) has pasta-shaped mao shan wang gelato sitting on vanilla cream, with coconut cream and coconut flakes on top. The mao shan wang gelato was rich, while the vanilla cream gave a different dimension to the dessert. We also appreciated the crisp bits of coconut flakes. We recommend sharing this as the sweetness and creaminess can get quite heavy. It melts pretty fast, so digs into it quickly upon serving.

Pang Zi 3
Durian Sticky Rice 4.2/5

Our favourite was the Durian Sticky Rice ($7.90). You have warm glutinous rice served with coconut cream and a generous portion of unadulterated durian flesh. The rice was lovely. It was soft, chewy and fragrant, everything you'd want your sticky rice to be. If you want something not too sweet, this is the one to go for among the three shared here.

Apart from these new creations, Pang Zi Durian also offers other items, like durian puffs, durian mousse, and a range of ice cream flavours such as white coconut, dark chocolate, lychee yuzu, salted caramel popcorn, ondeh ondeh and more.

If you can't pop by their space, Pang Zi Durian also does island-wide delivery at $5 for a minimum spending of $40 and free for orders $80 and above. For Jurong and Bukit Batok residents, you can enjoy free delivery at a minimum of $40.

Xing Yun Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice (幸运海南起骨鸡饭) @ Yuhua Food Centre - Popular Hainanese Chicken Rice In The West With Snaking Queue

XingYunHainaneseBonelessChickenRice-05

Whenever you ask Singaporeans where is the best Hainanese Chicken Rice in Singapore, you probably get different answers. I am not surprised because best is subjective, especially in a food paradise like Singapore, where you can get Hainanese Chicken Rice almost anywhere around the island. Everyone has their favourite, and one popular stall in the West is Xing Yun Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice (幸运海南起骨鸡饭) at Yuhua Food Centre. It always has a long snaking queue at its stall.

XingYunHainaneseBonelessChickenRice-15

XingYunHainaneseBonelessChickenRice-07
Hainanese Chicken Rice 4.5/5

I ordered Half a Steamed Chicken ($12) and chicken liver which is deboned and drizzled in a sweet and savoury brown sauce. It also came with a few slices of pineapple and tomato. The chicken is slightly cold, suggesting it has been dunked in cold water. The meat is tender and juicy too. I can understand why there is always a long queue to savour their chicken rice.

XingYunHainaneseBonelessChickenRice-04

The rice at Xing Yun Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice is of the firmer type, which is the texture I like. It is also not greasy, but I thought the flavour was a bit too subtle, lacking the fragrance of a good plate of chicken rice.

XingYunHainaneseBonelessChickenRice-01

Another essential component for any chicken rice stall is the chilli. The chilli is really shiok, complementing the chicken and rice excellently. It is spicy, tangy and garlicky. Unfortunately, the ginger sauce was too watery for my liking.

Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee @ Jurong West Ave 5 - A Delicious Discovery In The Old Jalan Bahar Camp

FriedHokkienMee1

Little did I know the old Jalan Bahar Camp at Jurong West Ave 5 has been redeveloped. The old camp area now sits a Sheng Siong Supermarket, warehouse and food court. Not known to many, there is an excellent Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee in what is known as the Sheng Siong Food Court or FM Food Master Food Court.

FriedHokkienMee7

The fried hokkien prawn mee stall offers quite a variety such as Slipper Lobster Fried Hokkien Mee ($10), Big Prawn Fried Hokkien Mee ($8), La La Fried Hokkien Mee ($8), Roasted Pork Hokkien Mee ($8) and Fried Hokkien Mee ($4/ $5/ $8). There is even a Premium Fried Hokkien Mee ($25) which comes with slipper lobster, la la, big prawns, roasted pork and squid. On top of that, it sells Fried Carrot Cake and Fried Oyster.

FriedHokkienMee18
Roasted Pork Fried Hokkien Mee 4.5/5

FriedHokkienMee16

I only tried the Roasted Pork Fried Hokkien Mee ($8) as I am alone. The stall woks up a wet version of the hokkien mee, which reminds me of Xiao Di Fried Prawn Noodle. It comes in a generous portion of prawns and roasted pork, soaked in a robust prawny broth packed with depth. Even the chilli goes very well with the slurping goodness.

FriedHokkienMee24

Overall, it is a good plate of fried hokkien prawn mee. However, if there is any room for improvement, it needs more wok hei to the plate of goodness. According to my friend who lives nearby, it also depends on who is behind the wok. The young Malaysian chap fries a better plate of hokkien mee.

Qi Xiang Hot Pot @ The Chevrons - Popular Chicken Pot In Kovan, Opens New Hotpot Restaurant In The West

QiXiangHotPot-2

Qi Xiang Hot Pot at The Chevrons is proudly brought to you by the team behind Qi Xiang Chicken Pot. Known for its unique beer-infused chicken pots, the restaurant also uses traditional claypots, and what you get is one of Singapore's first-ever yuan yang claypot options. What's more, it opens till 3am daily!

IMG_2512

The restaurant will also be offering free-flow drinks, fruits and condiments for $5 per pax. Among the various condiments, be sure to get its in-house special chilli sauce, which is full of zing and adds a fiery kick to every bite.

IMG_2573
Pumpkin Soup 4.8/5

Soup bases options include its Signature Broth ($29.90 for full or half pot) which has brought them to fame, but I chose other two which complement each other - a soul comforting and nourishing Pumpkin Soup ($29.90 for full or half pot), juxtaposing a piquant and zingy Green Pepper Sauerkraut Dory Fish Pot ($37.90 for full pot, $20.80 for half pot). The Pumpkin Soup takes more than 5 hours to be ready, and supposedly rich in chicken and pork collagen. That was quite evident in the deep chicken flavour underneath the sweet pumpkin note. You can even amp up the chicken broth by pairing it with Qi Xiang Hotpot’s Famed Boiled Chicken ($9.90 for half chicken or quarter thigh meat options, $15.90 for whole chicken).

IMG_2546
Green Pepper Sauerkraut Dory Fish Pot 4.8/5

On the other hand, the latter was highly stimulating with a broth cooked with herbaceous peppercorns, ginger, sour mustard leaves, and laced with chilli oil. I like this version versus a full-blown mala soup. It gives that pleasant peppercorn aroma and a fiery kick without the greasiness. What's interesting is the addition of dory fish to emulate the concept of sliced fish bee hoon.

IMG_2551
Japanese Wagyu Beef

IMG_2554
Iberico pork

The menu features over 80 delectable options, including premium shabu shabu meat featuring Australian Wagyu Beef ($49.90 for full portion, $24.90 for half portion) and Japanese Wagyu Beef ($135.90 for 300g, $67.90 for 150g). Of course, there is seafood as well, such as prawns and Tioman fish slices.

IMG_2529
Smoke Infused Duck Breast Braised in Szechuan Sauce 4.5/5

But what jazz up this hotpot menu is its range of sides. For instance, this Smoke Infused Duck Breast Braised in Szechuan Sauce ($18.90) is a rather well-considered dish prepared through the precise cooking methods of being braised, sous-vide, then tea smoked with umami-packed house-made Szechuan sauce. I love the fats that lace around the meat, which made each slice tender and succulent.

IMG_2537
XO Homemade Carrot Cake 3.8/5

If you like deep-fried carrot cake, you may find this XO Homemade Carrot Cake ($10.90) sinfully good. Each chunk of carrot cake is turned into a crispy morsel tossed with crispy egg bits, beansprouts and spring onions, dressed in dollops of XO sauce.

IMG_2535
Prawn Pizza 4/5

Another delectable bite is this crowd-pleasing Prawn Pizza ($9.90). The filling in between the thin crisp was pretty well done, with bits of prawns to provide that bit of a bite.

IMG_2515

To celebrate the new opening, you can enjoy the following promotions:
- No service charge (June 2021 to August 2021)
- Free Mee Sua Dish for birthday diners

Feng Zhen Lor Mee @ Taman Jurong Food Centre - The Same Gold Standard For Best Lor Mee In The West

FengZhenLorMee12

Suppose you ask me where is the best Lor Mee in the West. Feng Zhen Lor Mee at Taman Jurong Food Centre is the top of my list. The last visit to the stall was back in 2016, and I noticed a couple of minor changes. First, the signboard has changed from yellow to purple. Second, it has also replaced the porcelain bowls with plastic bowls.

FengZhenLorMee4
Lor Mee 4.2/5

The bowl of gooey slurping goodness comprises braised pork belly, braised egg, fish cake, ngoh hiang and flaky fish meat. It has not changed since the last visit.

FengZhenLorMee8

What binds everything in the bowl together has to be the delicious gravy. The flavoursome gravy or "lor" is not overly starchy, making it drinkable yet just ideal for coating each strand of noodles. For the fullest enjoyment, I would recommend adding some chilli sauce, garlic, and the soul of any good lor mee, the vinegar into the bowl of noodles, and give them a good toss.

YUN NANS (云海肴) @ Westgate - Celebrate Chinese New Year Featuring Specialities Prepared With Premium Ingredients Imported From Yunnan

YunNans8

Usher in the Year of the Ox this February with Yun Nans (云海肴), The restaurant has put together six Chinese New Year set menus catering from 4 to 8 pax ($298++ to $838++), featuring specialities prepared with premium ingredients imported from Yunnan. The set menus will be available from 01 February to 28 February 2021.

YunNans5
Prosperity Abalone Yu Sheng 3.5/5

Lo Hei is a must-have at every Chinese New Year feast. It is our unique way of celebrating Chinese New Year in Singapore. Yun Nans has unveiled the Prosperity Abalone Yu Sheng ($58.80/ $78.80) for the occasion. It is available for both dine-in and takeaway.

YunNans9
Yun Nans Prosperity Treasure Hot Pot 4.8/5

Making a coming back this year is the Yun Nans Prosperity Treasure Hot Pot ($288++/ $438++) with a level-up version with even more premium ingredients. In the treasure pot, diners can look forward to delicacies such as wild morel, wild golden fungus, sea cucumber, abalone, scallops, prawns, mushrooms, fish maw and cordyceps flowers, laid with yam and Chinese cabbage in the base.

YunNans12
Traditional Salt Baked Chicken 4.5/5

The Traditional Salted Baked Chicken ($22.80++/ $38.80++) is cooked with two types of ginger - sand ginger and galangal, the kampung chicken is braised, then baked until tender and juicy with the braising sauce penetrating every inch of it.

YunNans15
Steamed Red Grouper Peppercorn Style

Instead of the usual Hong Kong style steamed fish, why not try something new for the new year? I would highly recommend you to the Steamed Red Grouper Peppercorn Style. The aromatic peppercorn gives the steamed fish a full elevated enjoyment.

YunNans21
"Bi Feng Tang" Style Pork Ribs with Truffles 4.2/5

The "Bi Feng Tang" Style Pork Ribs with Truffles ($33.80++) is humongous. I could not resist picking up the pork rib with my hands. A pull with my teeth and the meat falls off the bone with ease. While the thick coat of garlic and chilli is aromatic, I could not taste the truffle at all. Hence I don't think the addition of truffle is necessary at all.

YunNans27
Braised Truffle Ee-fu Noodles 3/5

Same as the pork rib, I could not taste the truffle in the Braised Truffle Ee-fu Noodles ($16.80++). It s a comforting dish to wrap up the savoury dishes before moving to desserts.

YunNans22
Double-boiled Peach Gum and Snow Fungus 3.5/5

The Double-boiled Peach Gum and Snow Fungus ($6.80++) is not only refreshing but nourishing too with ingredients such as Peng Da Hai, peach gum, snow fungus and snow lotus seed.

YunNans26
Freshly Baked New Year Pastry

A must-try is the flaky Freshly Baked New Year Pastry. I thought it is filled with red bean paste, but after checking with the restaurant, I realised it is rose petals, no wonder there is a beautiful floral scent.

Besides the six Chinese New Year dine-in set menus, there is also a Special Chinese New Year Takeaway Set ($298+ Members/ $338 public) for takeaway. The takeaway set comprises prosperity abalone yu sheng, prosperity treasure hotpot, steamed glutinous rice wrapped in lotus leaf and traditional salt baked chicken. The dine-in set menus and takeaway menus are available at their Nex and Jewel Changi Airport outlets too.

Note: This is an invited tasting.
