Gyoza-Ya @ Plaza Singapura - Exclusive Set Meals With Free Flow Of Japanese Salad

GyozaYa12

Known for their affordable gyozas, Gyoza-Ya has recently launched a new set menu which is exclusive to both Plaza Singapura and Northpoint outlets only. From $14.80 onwards, there are 23 variations of the set meal to choose from, alongside with free flow of Japanaese salad.

GyozaYa4
Saba Tonkatsu Donburi 3/5

For Donburi Set Meals, each donburi comes with 2 types of meat, a radish stew, 3 original gyozas, a soup and a free flow Japanese salad which is shredded cabbage with plum sauce. Crunchy and refreshing with acidity from the plum sauce, the salad went really well with my Saba Tonkatsu Donburi which is quite a classic pairing to begin with. However, my tonkatsu was tad too dry. The fattier saba fish fared better and the radish stew was surprisingly a highlight of the rice bowl.

GyozaYa20
Gyu Kakuni Donburi 4/5

Compared to the above, you will probably get a lot more bang on your bucks and satisfaction with this Gyu Kakuni Donburi ($20.80). Both the gyu and kakuni were very well braised, hence they were tender and packed with umami. The gyu was in large slices with a balanced portion of fats and the pork belly were juicy without any porky taste. A scoop of tempura bits was served for some extra crunch.

GyozaYa9
Tendon Set 3.5/5

The Tendon Set ($18.80) may not be the most affordable one but the 3 juicy prawn tempuras make up for it. Other than the prawns, I also like the use of Shimeji mushroom tempura instead of the commonly used Enoki mushroom. Its texture is meatier and when fried, in this case it seemed even juicier against the crisp batter.

GyozaYa17
Mentaiko Gyoza

If that 3 original gyozas within the set doesn't fill you up, feel free to order other variations from the menu, such as the crowd pleasing Mentaiko Gyoza ($9.80) or the outlet exclusive Takoyaki Gyoza ($9.80).

Baristart Coffee @ Tras Street - Popular Hokkaido Cafe Using BIEI Jersey Milk Opens In Singapore

BaristartCoffee1

The popular Baristart Coffee from Hokkaido has opened its first-ever overseas cafe in Singapore, offering exceptional Hokkaido milk quality, BIEI Jersey Milk from the Brown Jersey cows which is left with around eight hundred such cattle, making up barely 1% of the cow population in Hokkaido.

BaristartCoffee2
Flat White 3.8/5

I started with the Flat White ($6.70) which offers 3 types of beans - Baristart Blend and 2 single origin beans that will change every month. Indeed the BIEI Jersey Milk gives the coffee a rich and creamy finishing with a tinge of sweetness. I like my coffee to showcase the characteristic of the coffee beans hence I am not sure I really like it. Don't get be wrong, it is still a good cup of coffee but I felt that the milk is more than a supporting role in this case.

BaristartCoffee34
BIEI Jersey Milk Coffee 4.2/5

The best way to appreciate the sweet and creamy BIEI Jersey Milk is to try the BIEI Jersey Milk Coffee ($7.50). It is like having a coffee flavoured milk.

BaristartCoffee42
Tuna & Avocado Salad with Wasabi Dressing 3/5

For those that like to have something clean and healthy, the Tuna & Avocado Salad with Wasabi Dressing ($14.80) will be a good option. It is a decent dish but it doesn't quite excite me.

BaristartCoffee39
Tonkatsu Sando 3.8/5

The Tonkatsu Sando ($16.80) which comes with tender pork cutlet and coleslaw, sandwiched between 2 slices of fluffy bread is pretty enjoyable. It even comes with french fries for a complete meal.

BaristartCoffee10
Hokkaido Carbonara 3.5/5

BaristartCoffee41
Spaghetti Seafood Shiso Pesto 3/5

The pasta at Baristart Coffee is quite decent too. I tried both the Hokkaido Carbonara ($17.80) and Spaghetti Seafood Shiso Pesto ($17.80). I preferred the carbonara more for its creaminess, partly for the fact that I am not a pesto lover. The creamy sauce is a result of the concoction of their signature BIEI Jersey Milk.

BaristartCoffee12
Obihiro Butadon 4/5

Perfect for the office workers in the area looking for a quick lunch is the Obihiro Butadon ($18.80). The comforting pork rick bowl comes with slices of sweet soy sauce Kurobuta pork belly on top of a bowl of fluffy white Japanese rice.

BaristartCoffee21
Cream Puff 4.5/5

A must try at Baristart Coffee is their Cream Puff ($4.50/one, $12/three). It may seems like just another cream puff but this is loaded with luscious Hokkaido BIEI Jersey Milk custard cream, that is both rich and creamy with delectable crisps and sugary bits on the pastry.

BaristartCoffee30
Shaved Ice (Shiro Kuma) 3/5

The bear shaped Shaved Ice - Shiro Kuma ($9.80) is drizzled with Hokkaido BIEI Jersey Milk and comes with vanilla ice cream. Underneath in the bowl is a plethora of colourful fruits such as orange, mango, white peach and strawberry. Guest can have a choice of coffee, strawberry, mango or green tea flavoured homemade syrup that is to be poured over the shaved ice and enjoyed together.

BaristartCoffee28
Chestnut & Mont Blanc 4/5

Served in a glass is the Chestnut & Mont Blanc ($8.80) which comes with layers of houji tea pudding, vanilla ice cream, chestnut cream, mont blanc cream, chestnut patisserie cream, chestnut bits, feuillantine and buttery cookies. Have everything together for a multi textural enjoyment with the different flavours coming together.

BaristartCoffee17

While the main focus of Baristart Coffee is to showcase the coffee with their Hokkaido BIEI Jersey Milk, guests are assumed of a complete dining experience here. Besides coffee, guests have a a full range of mains to desserts which makes is an all day cafe to visit.

SENS @ Holland Village - Newly Opened Japanese Restaurant Inside A Gourmet Grocer

Sens14

Located at the basement of the new Raffles @ Holland Village is SENS, a Japanese restaurant within the gourmet grocer TASTE. It offers a wide repertoire of contemporary Japanese cuisine including sashimi, sushi, teppanyaki and omakase. It also boasts one of the largest selections of Japanese craft beers, sake and wines from breweries in different regions of Japan.

Sens4
Sashimi Moriawase Mix 4/5

Dinner at SENS started with the Sashimi Moriawase Mix ($48.80) which comes with 5 different kinds of sashimi. On the plate, we had maguro, otoro, salmon, hamachi and ebi which is air flown from Japan. In short you can ensure of its freshness.

Sens21
Aburi Salmon Mentai Roll 4.2/5

For those that does not take raw food, you can go for the Aburi Salmon Mentai Roll ($18.80) topped with mentaiko and roes. Pop one into mouth and enjoy a burst of different flavours and textures coming together.

Sens7
Miyazaki Wagyu Tataki 4.8/5 and Beef Kaku Ni 4/5

A crowd favouruite was the Miyazaki Wagyu Tataki ($68.80) for both its great flavour and texture. The thinly sliced wagyu is lightly seared on the exterior while the interior is cooked to a beautiful pink. This gives it an extra layer of flavour on top of that flavoursome and juicy beef slices.

The other beef dish we tried is the Beef Kaku Ni ($16.80). The piece of beef literally fell apart as I tried to pick it up with my chopsticks. The melted in the mouth texture and its appetizing rich flavour calls for a bowl of rice to go with it.

Sens11
Foie Gras Teriyaki 4.2/5

Not really quite Japanese but the menu does offer items such as Foie Gras Teriyaki ($16). I like the fact that the foie gras has a layer of caramelized sweetness that complemented the creaminess

Sens16
Surume Ika 4/5

From the grill, there is the Surume Ika ($18.80) which is grilled perfectly to a nice bouncy texture coated with a nice caramelized sweetness for an elevated enjoyment.

Sens13
Kurobuta Rosu Katsu 4.5/5

A worthy try at SENS is the Kurobuta Rosu Katsu ($17.50). The breaded deep fried pork loin has an interesting crispy crumbs on top of the juicy meat which tasted like tempura coating. putting it in another way it is like having the crispy KFC fried chicken except it is pork not chicken.

Sens19
Niniku Chahan 3/5

If you are still not full, the Niniku Chahan ($8) may able to fill you up. Unfortunately I felt that he garlic fried rice lacked the garlic and wok hei aroma.

Sens27
Yakitori Set 3/5

Perfect to go with some beer or sake is the Yakitori. We ordered a few different skewers such as chicken wings, meat balls, pork belly and mushroom to try. Maybe the chef wanted to showcase the natural flavour of the ingredients but I felt that a little bit more seasoning would be more enjoyable.

Overall food at SENS is above average. I would definitely go back for the miyazaki wagyu tataki, beef kaku ni, kurobuta rosu katsu, sashimi and sushi.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

Japan Foods Garden @ Food Republic Shaw House - Five Different Concept Under One Roof

20161004_185303_HDR

Japan Foods Garden is a mini Japanese food precinct within Food Republic Shaw House. Newly opened in September, it is the latest and probably the first Japanese food cluster in a foodcourt style. That said, the authenticity of what are being offered here, which has 5 different concepts, easily surpasses your typical Japanese restaurant that sets in a mall.

Akasaka Yukun - Steamed Unagi Specialist

20161004_185855_HDR

If you have been to the Kyushu region, you might have come across this heritage restaurant well-known for their steamed eel dishes. Founded in Kurume, Kyushu in 1952, Akasaka Yukun has 8 outlets across Japan only. This opening in Singapore is actually its first ever overseas branch!

20161004_193749_HDR
Steamed Eel with Rice and Shredded Egg 4.5/5

Needless to say, what is a must-try here is their Unagi Seiro Mushi 1 Layer ($28.80). The conventional way of treating eel is grilling. However, Yukun steams theirs to keep the meat soft and moist. After tasting it, I can understand why they chose to use the preparation technique. The eel was tender and evenly flavoured with their special sauce - a secret recipe which is now at its third generation. The rice underneath is also well seasoned and tasty on its own. I was told their Unagi Iron Pot is just as popular. Akin to a Bibimbap, I could only imagine the tasty fried bits of the seasoned rice against the hot pot. Something to come back for!

Freshly-made Soba, Tempura and Donburi

A bowl of freshly-made soba seems good for any time of the day. The soba is made on the spot using a machine specially imported all the way from Japan. It compresses the homemade dough and strands of noodles will passes out from the machine that go straight into a pot of boiling water.

20161004_192047_HDR
Freshly-made Buckwheat Soba with Assorted Tempura 3.8/5

The lightness of the noodles is something that no other commercial soba can offer. Boiled for a framed timing and rinsed in cold water, their Zuru soba ($5.50) is detectable on its own with just the dipping sauce. What's best to go with these slurping goodness is none other than their tempura. Among those that we had tried, Tempura Ebi ($3), Tempura Chicken ($2) and Tempura Sweet Potato ($1), my favourite is their Ebi. The prawn is really huge and succulent. What's notable is also their fluffy batter which leaves my mouth no trace of oil. A look around, we noticed a number of tables ordered their Ten-don. It is hard to miss those gigantic tempura prawns, squid and vegetables piling up high from the rice bowl.

Banzaiya - Kyoto Small Sides Concept

20161004_190148_HDR

Obanzai is a home-style dining originated in Kyoto, where Japanese families will serve a large variety of small, traditional homecooked dishes to relatives and friends on special occasions. Expect different selections each time you visit Banzaiya, priced from $1.50 to $5.00 each.

20161004_190825_HDR
Small Dishes 3.8/5

We chose 3 items out of the entire selection. Their Chawanmushi ($2.50) has a silkiness that is beyond my expectations. The portion is also quite generous which probably can feed 2 ladies. Their Fried Tofu ($2.50) is just as outstanding. The sticky glaze on the light batter elevates the humble dish to a whole new level. What doesn't delight me as much is perhaps their Temari Sushi ($4 for 3pcs) which is relatively plain.

Gyu Tetsu Teppanyaki - Japanese Iron Plate Bar

20161004_185638_HDR

One of the trendy teppanyaki restaurants in Japan, Gyu Tetsu Teppanyaki is here to bring to us their signature US Angus Beef Lemon Steak ($18.80).

20161004_200010_HDR
US Angus Beef Lemon Steak 4.2/5

After tasting it, I thought the idea of cooking slices of beef with citrus sauce is ingenious. The citrus note brightens up the dish, lifting the taste of the premium beef. Do eat it right away when the meat is still pink and tender. Don't waste the sauce! Dress your rice with the robust sauce that has the essence of the meat and caramelised onions.

Bears Curry Cafe & Bar - Japanese Curry rice, coffee, and Alchoholic Beverages

20161004_185346_HDR

If you have children with you, you may want to get the adorable Non-spicy Japanese Curry with 'Bear' Rice ($9.80) from Bears Curry Café & Bar.

20161004_195854_HDR
Non-Spicy Japanese Curry Rice 3/5 and Katsu Black Curry 2.5/5

For once, your kids will be excited about their curry more than anything else. Surprisingly, though non-spicy, the curry was still quite robust and not overly sweet. I didn't quite enjoy Katsu Black Curry ($14.80) which is a spicier curry. I felt that the flavour lacked depth and there was an unpleasant powdery texture due to the usage of charcoal powder.

20161004_185542_HDR

Although it is a food court setting, the precinct is enclosed and conducive for dining. Considering the fact that a couple of the brands have their first overseas branch right in Singapore, that is already noteworthy offering something unique from the ever so competitive food scene in Singapore, especially with the number of Japanese restaurants and eateries in Singapore.

IMG_9467ed

Surfing through the long buffet line, I landed with a plate of crustacean on ice. I had fresh oysters, alaskan king crabs, prawns, scallops and clams, kicking start the feast.

Braised Wagyu Beef Short Rib with Seared Hokkaido Scallop 4/5

IMG_9454ed
Wagyu Rump 4.2/5

For the meat lovers, the Whole Baby Lamb and the slab of beautiful Wagyu Rump definitely caught my attention. There is even a push cart going around the restaurant serving on table side Braised Wagyu Beef Short Rib with Seared Hokkaido Scallop.

IMG_9471ed
Indian Food 4/5

It is not just about seafood and meat on the buffet line. Pretty impressive among the spread is the Indian dishes which spiced up the whole experience with a huge varieties of selection.

IMG_9475ed

One of my favourite sections among the buffet line is the Satay which comes with a variety of meat and seafood on skewers.

A new introduction to the buffet is the live wok station that fired up an aromatic plate of Wok Fried Fish Noodles with Roasted Pork and Yellow Chives.

An interesting item I noticed on the spread is the Japanese Curry Katsu Rice. I could not help myself to a plate of it as you don't usually get to have it on the buffet line.

IMG_9482ed
Dessert 4/5

And what a fitting way to conclude the indulgent dining experience with a lip smacking spread of desserts. You will need a second stomach to eat through the dessert section.

Imakatsu @ Star Vista

IMG_8055ed

The latest F&B addition to The Star Vista is Imakatsu that specializes in Tonkatsu. With two outlets in Japanese, Imakatus has moved ashore and started its first outlet in the west of Singapore. We have a few words with the restaurant staff before our lunch and was told that they are more popular for their chicken than pork. This actually arouse our interests as we thought pork is usually prefer over chicken in Japan.

IMG_8057ed

Like most Tonkatsu specialty restaurant, complimentary shredded cabbage is served. I like the shredded cabbage with a dash of vinaigrette and goma sauce. However as you may have noticed, the shredded cabbage were white in colour and not the greeny type. It was a bitter aftertaste instead of the greeny type that is sweeter.

IMG_8061ed
Premium Mentaiko Pork Loin Cutlet Set (180g) 4.2/5

Since Imakatsu is offering a seasonal menu of Premium Mentaiko Pork Loin Cutlet Set ($26), we could not resist ordering the gorgeously tonkatsu topped with the popping mentaiko, radish, spring onions and seasweed. While I do like mentaiko, I thought its saltiness did not complement with the succulent pork loin. However my lunch partner different from my view, so taste is subjective. Saying that I have to admit the pork loin was really juicy and even have a nice sweetness to it. Definitely one of the better ones I have eaten. I also noted that the bread crumbs coated around the pork cutlet is more delicate than many places.

IMG_8059ed
Garlic Pork Loin 4.5/5

Compared to the mentiko, I would prefer the Garlic Pork Loin Set ($19.80) more. Stuffed with garlic in the middle of the succulent pork, I felt it lifted up the taste of the pork more.

IMG_8065ed
Chicken Fillet Cutlet Set 4.8/5

Next is the assuming Chicken Fillet Cutlet Set ($14.80) that is supposed to be more popular than the pork. After tasting it, we got our answer and indeed the chicken katsu is soft, tender and flavourful. Plain in look but amazing beautiful in taste.

IMG_8064ed
Mentaiko Chicken 4.2/5

If you prefer something more fusion, then you can try the Mentaiko Chicken Cutlet. The combination give the chicken katsu another dimension of flavours for a more appealing appreciation.

IMG_8069ed
Mixed Deep Fried Vegetables 4/5

After all the proteins, we tried the Mix Deep Fried Vegetables ($11.80). The crunchiness of the asparagus and the sweetness of the sweet potatoes stood out for me.

IMG_8072ed
Deep Fried Prawn 4/5

The Deep Fried Prawn Set ($23.80) served with mayonnaise is huge! Crispy on the exterior, protected by the layer of batter, the prawn remains succulent inside.

IMG_8076ed
Piyo Piyo Minced Meat Cutlet 3.5/5

The Piyo Piyo Minced Meat Cutlet ($9.80) reminds me of the Scotch egg except that it has a lava egg yolk. Pretty interesting for a side dish and good for food porn. Taste wise was average only.

IMG_8074ed
Ginger Stir Fry Pork 4.5/5

Besides being a tonkatsu specialty restaurant, it also offers some other cooked dishes. One such excellent dish is the Ginger Stir Fry Pork ($11.80) which will go very well with a bowl of rice. If you not looking for something deep fried, this will be an excellent choice.

If you like tonkatsu, Imakatsu is definitely a good choice with its excellent katsu. After trying out both the pork and chicken katsu, I have to agreed with what the restaurant staff has recommended. The chicken really tasted better than the pork. No wonder the chicken is more popular than the pork in Japan. Don't believe me? Head down to Imakatsu and try it for yourself.
