Dickson Nasi Lemak @ Joo Chiat Road - Rated Best Nasi Lemak In Malaysia

DicksonNasiLemakInterior-08

Recently. my friend Alison invited me to do a Nasi Lemak PK episode on her Youtube Channel - 艾莉愛吃 Ali Eats, and we decided to check out Dickson Nasi Lemak at Joo Chiat Road. Rated as best Nasi Lemak in Malaysia, it is opened by the same folk behind Champion Bolo Bun. Apparently it claims to use the same recipe as the renowned Village Park Restaurant in Malaysia.

DicksonNasiLemakInterior-05

Unfortunately, Dickson Nasi Lemak is not a dine-in restaurant. Customers can only takeaway from the restaurant. Currently, the menu is minimal. During my visit, it only has the Ayam Goreng Berempah ($9.20). Upon ordering at the cashier, customers will be given a buzzer and need to wait for another 10 minutes for the kitchen to bring out their takeaway. I suspect the wait is for the kitchen to freshly fried a new batch of chicken leg for each order.

DicksonNasiLemak2
Ayam Goreng Berempah 4.5/5

The packet of Nasi Lemak comes with a deep-fried chicken leg, ikan bilis, hard-boiled egg and sambal chilli. The rice is very fragrant and packed with a rich coconut milk flavour. I can even taste a bit of sweetness in the rice. Probably some sugar is added.

DicksonNasiLemak5

The spiced marinated chicken leg is super good. It is tender and juicy. I could taste spices such as turmeric, lemongrass and cumin, giving it a beautiful aroma. You will like the accompanying sambal chilli for those that can take spicy. It is fiery, with the heat lingering at the back of your tongue.

Rempapa @ Park Place Residences at PLQ - Chef Damian D'Silva Opens All-Day Singapore Heritage Cuisine Restaurant

Rempapa22

I have been following Chef Damian D'Silva heritage cooking when he had a stall at Timbre+ Ayer Rajah, followed by Folklore and Restaurant Kin. But, unfortunately, he didn't stay long at any one place. Hence I was glad to hear he is making a come back with a new restaurant - Rempapa at Park Place Residences at PLQ. Rempapa offers an all-day dining concept where the eclectic menu caters for different times of day - Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch, and Dinner.

Rempapa6
Chickpea Curry with Roti/ String Hoppers 4.2/5

Rempapa8

Available for both breakfast and brunch is the Chickpea Curry ($18) with either Roti or String Hoppers. Perked up by the addition of Kashmiri chilli powder and turmeric powder, it is an aromatic combo of Indian and Eurasian curry flavours. It's best to have it with the buttery crisp roti or let the string hoppers soak up the delicious curry.

Rempapa11
Sri Lankan Chicken Curry with String Hoppers 4/5

Rempapa12

I know Chef Damian can cook many cuisines, but Sri Lankan is new to me. The Sri Lankan Chicken Curry with String Hoppers ($16) is milder with tender kampong chicken thigh. Traditionally, Sri Lankan curry is a more watery kind of gravy that is perfect for the string hoppers, commonly known in Singapore as idiyappam or putu mayam, to soak up the curry.

Rempapa15
Stir-fried Chee Cheong Fun 3.5/5

Chee Cheong Fun is a trending dish in the food scene this year, with several hawker stalls selling it, but they all sell the steamed version. Over at Rempapa, there is the stir-fried version. The Stir-fried Chee Cheong Fun ($13) is fried together with prawn, egg, and yellow chive. It is similar to our local white carrot cake replaced with smooth and soft rice noodle roll.

Rempapa17
Seafood Curry Mee 4.8/5

The Seafood Curry Mee ($18) available during lunch and brunch comprises yellow noodles, bee hoon, pig skin, boiled prawns, fish cake, fresh cockles (optional), long tau pok and beansprouts. According to Chef Damian, his interpretation is from a Hokkien hawker dish served during the 1920s and 1930s. He has used his own curry powder blend for more subtle spice flavours. Sand prawns and dry shrimps are used to make the stock instead of coconut milk, resulting in a rich and umami soup base which I drank to the last drop.

Rempapa21
Fish Nasi Lemak 4.2/5

Rempapa24
Fried Chicken 4.5/5

The Nasi Lemak ($17) comes with either Fish or Fried Chicken. The fragrant coconut rice is accompanied by sambal, silver fish, egg and cucumber. Customers who opted for the fish nasi lemak gets a whole selar fish which is enormous! I prefer the fried chicken nasi lemak, which is comparable to the popular fried chicken nasi lemak from The Coconut Club.

Rempapa28
Fried Chicken Curry Rice 4/5

To introduce heritage cuisine to the younger generation, Chef Damian introduces them to heritage flavours by giving the dish a modern presentation. He believes the food needs to be accepted by them first before trying and learning more about heritage cuisine. Hence, he has come up with the Fried Chicken Curry Rice ($16), presented as a Japanese curry with kaarage, combing the essences of Eurasian, Peranakan, Indian, Malay and Chinese cuisines.

Rempapa44
Kedongdong Salad 4.5/5

For the dinner menu, the dishes are more communal. The menu is different from the breakfast, lunch and brunch menus. We had the Kedongdong Salad ($15) to kick start our dinner. I am not strange to the wing bean salad as Chef has served it before in his previous restaurant. However, the new version is less spicy, and he has added more shrimp floss.

Rempapa32
Baca Assam 4.8/5

The Baca Assam ($38) is a dish that Chef Damian's granddad cooked only on special occasions. It is a lost Eurasian heritage dish that is a mix of Peranakan and Indian flavours. Beef brisket is used, and I enjoyed the tenderness. The addition of tamarind gives the beef brisket the tanginess, which cuts the richness and whetted the appetite.

Rempapa35
Lamb Leg Rendang 3/5

The Lamb Leg Rendang ($38) is a classic Minangkabau dish cooked in a mix of wet spice paste. Unfortunately, while I enjoyed the rempah, the boneless lamb leg came across on the dry side.

Rempapa41
Slow-cooked Belly Pork with Ah Seng Sauce 4.2/5

It is not all about Chef Damian's family recipes at Rempapa. The restaurant also showcases heritage recipes shared by the younger chefs to motivate their immersion into heritage cuisine. The Slow-cooked Belly Pork with Ah Seng Sauce ($23) is a heritage Hokkien dish that hails from Penang. The soul has to be the mildly spicy sauce on top of the pork belly. It is like having mala xiang gou.

Rempapa55
Kueh Platter 4.5/5

Not to be missed at Rempapa is the daily assortment of kuehs. The Kueh Platter ($6 for 4pc, $10 for 8pc, $15 for 12pc) includes favourites such as Kueh Kosui and Kueh Ku, Kueh Bengkah, Pulut Bengkah, Talam Keladi, Sago Ubi, Lapis Pulot, Rempah Udang and others available on the day.

Rempapa59

Rempapa is unlike any of Chef Damian's previous restaurants. At the new restaurant, Chef Damian introduces his 'Singapore New Heritage Cuisine', in which recipes drawn from the soul of tradition are reinvented with elements of different ethnicities to create flavour profiles that resonate with today's diner. Rempapa is not just a restaurant. It is the place where Chef Damian elevates Singapore heritage food to a status among the world's great cuisines. And where 'cultural sustainability' is nurtured through engaging the next generation of diners and mentoring fresh talent, seeing them take pride in Singapore cuisine and driving it to the next level.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

The Coco Rice @ Tiong Bahru Food Centre - From Selling Nasi Lemak Cake At Home To Opening A Hawker Stall

TheCocoRiceStall-1

Aries Chan made a name for herself with her home-based business - Nasi Lemak Indulgence, selling Nasi Lemak Cake. From the comfort of her home, she has opened a hawker stall - The Coco Rice at Tiong Bahru Food centre selling Blue Pea Nasi Lemak Sets.

TheCocoRice5

The hawker stall offers four different sets. The four sets on the menu are Sambal Lady Finger and Fried Tempeh Bean Curd ($6.90), Fried Chicken Whole Leg with Herbs & Spice ($7.90), Fried Fish with Sambal Kicap Chili ($8.90) and Sambal Prawn with Petai ($9.90). On top of that, you also have the option of adding extra ingredients for an additional cost.

TheCocoRice4
Fried Chicken Whole Leg with Herbs & Spice 4.2/5

I decided to go for the Fried Chicken Whole Leg with Herbs & Spice ($7.90), which comprises blue pea nasi lemak rice, homemade sambal, fried anchovies, fried peanuts, sunny side-up, cucumber and whole fried chicken leg with herbs & spice. I even added a homemade pan-grilled otah patty for an extra $2.

TheCocoRice11

TheCocoRice2

Among the various items on the plate, my favourite is the fragrant and fluffy nasi lemak rice complemented by the sweet and spicy sambal on the side. However, the star has to be the whole fried chicken leg. It is deep-fried to a crispy golden brown accentuated by the marination of the herbs and spices, giving it a lovely aroma.

ClickAFood (CAF) @ Upper Paya Lebar Road - New Pastel-themed Café With 5 Concepts By Singer-songwriter Hong Junyang

CAF20

Located along Upper Paya Lebar Road is the new multi-concept pastel-themed cafe CAF Clickafood in Singapore. The cafe offers a variety of cuisine - Korean, Thai, Western and local cuisine under one roof. It is the perfect place to have all your different cravings satisfied when dining together.

CAF3
Seoul Army Stew 4/5

From the Korean menu, we had the Seoul Army Stew ($19.90/2 pax). One of the most popular hot pot dishes in Korea, it comes in a rich, spicy broth made with chilli powder, kimchi and topped with a variety of meats, cabbage, and instant noodle. With a choice of spice level from 1 to 4, you can opt for the amount of heat in your favourite army stew.

CAF13
Korean Andong Jjimdak 3.8/5

The Korean Andong Jjimdak ($19.90/2 pax) features a soy sauce braised chicken stew with vegetables and chewy sweet potato noodles. Savoury, mildly salty and sweet with a very subtle spicy kick. It has a somewhat complex flavour that we enjoyed.

CAF11
168 Nasi Lemak 3.8/5

We tried their 168 Nasi Lemak ($8.90), which comes with ikan bilis, peanuts, fried chicken wings, cucumber and sunny side up atop a fragrant butterfly pea-infused coconut rice.

CAF17
Pad Thai “Bomb” 4/5

One of our favourites is the Pad Thai "Bomb" ($12.90) with spice Level 1-4. It features a fluffy deep-fried omelette covering wok-fried rice noodles, tossed in a delicious pad thai sauce and served with bean sprouts, peanuts and chilli flakes.

CAF15
Crab Meat Omelette Fried Rice 4/5

Another of our favourites goes to the Crab Meat Omelette Fried Rice ($10.90), with geenrous pieces of crabmeat and soft omelette over a mound of fragrant wok-hei fried rice. While we still wished that the omelette came slightly runny. we still enjoyed the dish, especially with the addition of sweet chilli which went well with the savoury elements.

CAF9
Nemo Burger 3.5/5

The Nemo Burger ($9.90) came with a huge golden battered dory fish sandwiched between fluffy buttered buns. The fish fillet looked promising, but we felt that the batter was a tad too sticky rather than having the nice crisp we were expecting. Add on the side of shoestring fries for an additional $2.90.

CAF5
Mango Coconut 4/5, Bandung 3.8/5

The Mango Coconut ($5.50) is a refreshing ice blend of coconut cream, coconut foam, mangoes, and pomelo sago, as well as nata de coco for toppings. The Bandung ($3.90) was syrupy and fragrant, although a tad too sweet for our liking.

Top 10 Home Based Businesses (HBB) That Are Worth Ordering

HBB1

COVID-19 pandemic has affected many people's livelihood. Instead of waiting for the best for the world to turn better, many people have taken a brave and significant step forward to change and adapt to the new norm. This sees the birth of many Home Based Business (HBB), putting their baking and cooking skills to good use, supplementing some incomes for the family.

I have the chance to try a couple of these home-based businesses during this period, and here is a list of my top 10 home-based business that is worth ordering and trying.

A Sweet Mess

ASweetMess11

A Sweet Mess caught my attention for their Rainbow Ondeh Ondeh. They are soft and chewy, with oozing gula melaka in it. Importantly, it is not using those syrup type. She actually bought the gula melaka in a block, hand grate them and cook them. Their Banana Cake, Pandan Gula Melaka Cupcake, and Basque Burnt Cheese Cake received many raving reviews too.

Any Hao Bao

AnyHaoBao6

To keep her parents occupied during circuit breaker, Francesca started AnyHaoBao for her parents to share their love of cooking. My favourite is their homecooked herbal chicken and achar. You get a whole chicken, cooked to tender. The herbal taste is relatively mild, so it should be acceptable to children. Interestingly it comes with two hard-boiled eggs. They also made Kong Bak Pau, but this is seasonal.

Edibles Bake Shop

EdiblesBakeShop9

My close friends will know that I am not really into dessert, hence for Edibles Bake Shop to make it my list, it has definitely won me over. The cupcakes are not overly sweet, well balanced and most importantly, very delicious. Serene is a very talented baker and does check out her beautiful cake. She can also customise cakes for that special occasion.

Hei Piah Family

HeiPiahFamily4

The hardest-hit industry during the pandemic is the aviation sector. During this period, pilots and cabin crews are all grounded. Laura, an SQ cabin crew and her fashion designer husband, started Hei Piah Family to share her mother-in-law Prawn Fritter recipe. I tried their prawn fritter and fell in love. It is crispy on the outside and pillowy inside.

Lady Boss Soy Sauce Chicken

LadyBossSoySauceChicken4

Lady Boss Soy Sauce Chicken is a home base business started by Sandra Sim. She is one of the owners of Sum Yi Tai. Before I tried the soy sauce chicken, I have already heard my raving reviews. When I finally get to taste it, I was really impressed. Well marinated and infused with the fragrant soy sauce, the chicken was also tender and juicy. Not forgetting that super power chilli sauce that comes with it.

Lor Bak Mama

LorBakMaMa1

Lor Bak Mama is started by Christine Yue, who has zero income when she has to closed her nail salons during the circuit breaker. Encouraged by her family and closed friends who have tried her lor bak, I am glad that I can get to savour this delicious braised pork belly that is cooked until melt in the mouth, absorbing the braising sauce that is packed with robustness.

There are Kaya Butter Roll, Blueberry Hill, Brownie Cheesecake and Chocolate Hazel Royal. For the upcoming festive seasons, it is rolling up a new pastry box. Do keep a lookout.

Noni Home Made Cooking

Noni12

Noni caught my eyes for offering authentic Indonesia food. I tried both their Nasi Lemak and Nasi Liwet. I personally love the Nasi Liwet as this is my first time have aromatic rice with anchovies wrapped with banana leaves, cooked over the fire. It even comes with a whole grilled chicken leg and tofu.

Slab Some Ribs

SlabSomeRibs45

Affected by the pandemic, Elaine, a sales manager for a local airline has been on furlough, and on a good month may get to work up to two days a week. With the inconsistent workdays and significant financial impact, she started Slab Some Ribs to supplement her income. I have known many home-based businesses but selling pork ribs probably is the first. What's more she has an interesting flavour like Kicap Manis. I heard she is introducing a new Korean flavour for the upcoming festive season.

Two Bake Boys

TwoBakeBoys5

Another home-based business started by an SQ cabin crew is Two Bake Boys. There are a lot of home bakers during this period and mostly focus on bakes such as brownies, cookies and burnt cheesecakes. Two Bake Boys is different, it is probably the first HBB that offers Authentic Thai Tea Crepe Cake. Currently, it has already expanded its menu with new flavours such as Matcha, Strawberry and Tiramisu.
