Hong Wen Mutton Soup @ Beauty World Food Centre - Old School Teochew Mutton Soup

Located on the fourth floor of Beauty World Centre is this old school Teochew mutton soup stall that seems to have been around for ages. Hong Wen Mutton Soup is founded by stall owner, Mr Tan's father back during the days at the demolished old Seventh Mile market. Mr Tan now runs the stall at Beauty World Food Centre while his brother has another stall in the nearby Bukit Timah Food Centre.

The Mutton Soup ($5) has a sweet herbal flavour with lots of shredded ginger masking the gamey taste of the mutton. However I find the soup too sweet to my liking. The mutton chopped into small pieces fell off the bone with ease. It was very tender and did not have any gamey taste. However I thought the serving was a bit small with only a few miserable pieces of mutton. I can't blame Mr Tan as I understand he used good quality mutton from New Zealand and he needs to watch his cost.

While I did not quite enjoy the bowl of mutton soup from Hong Wen Mutton Soup, I could tell that it has its own loyal supporters throughout the years. During my visit, I noticed a steady stream of customer patronizing the stall.

Melt Cafe @ Mandarin Oriental Singapore - Explore The Flavours of India

Melt Cafe at Mandarin Oriental Singapore will be drawing your attention to a special showcase of Indian cuisine by Indian Specialty Chef Santosh Kumar from 16 to 31 May 2016. And not just the food itself, I was welcomed by a beautiful lady dressed in Sari, with Indian music to waltz me in.

Mutton Biryani 4/5

What caught my eyes at the Indian cuisine section was their Mutton Biryani. Like a King indeed, the mutton biryani is cooked with a whole lamb, which has been roasted for hours. Apart from the tender mutton, I love the aromatic spiced basmasti rice, punctuated with sweetness lent from raisins, dried apricot etc. There was also a lot of textures to it, thanks to the crunchy carrots and green peas.

Tandoori Jhinga King Prawns 3.8/5

A few notable items which I particularly like. The Tandoori Jhinga King Prawns marinated with spices and carom seeds is definitely one of them, something different from the usual tandoori fish or chicken. Fresh and succulent, the spices and carom seeds really whetted my appetite.

Lamb Foie Gras 3.8/5

Lamb paired with Foie Gras is not something that I would expect, given that both ingredients inherited a rather strong and acquired flavour. However, perhaps given the right proportion, this petite item turned out to be quite palate pleasing, rather than giving me a flavour assault. The patty was moist, and not gamey. The marriage of these two is almost like that of beef patty and bacon.

Potato Stuffed with Cottage Cheese and Vegetable 3.8/5

One of my favourite snacks of the evening was this unassuming looking Potato Stuffed with Cottage Cheese and Vegetable. The potato was roasted to the right tenderness, and I really like the comforting sweetness of the stuffing.

Vegetable Curries and Flat Bread, Yogurt and Chutney 3.5/5

There is a range of vegetable curries, which you can pair with an assortment of naan flat breads with flavours such as garlic, butter, olive and cheese. To mellow the fiery and creamy curries, you may want to visit their special 'Indian snack bar' for some homemade chutneys and yogurt.

Rasmalai Cottage Cheese Balls in Cream, Dumpling with Light Syrup, Apricot Pudding

To complete the entire Indian dining experience, there are 3 Indian flavoured desserts. They are Rasmalai Cottage Cheese Balls in Cream, Dumpling with Light Syrup, Apricot Pudding. My favourite is the apricot pudding. It was sweet and sour, and aromatic with cardamom.

The crepes was soft and fluffy, and was delicious even on its own. No matter how filled you are, their ice creams are a must-try. Their chocolate ice cream was rich, velvety and edged with bitterness, while the strawberry sorbet was tangy and refreshing. Their yogurt ice cream is also not-to-be missed.

D'Bell @ North Canal Road

Indian cuisine does not always come in big pots and pans, or heavily greased with butter. D'Bell at North Canal Road serves modern Indian inspired dishes meant to be shared, even over your favourite cocktails, if you preferred. Cook without butter, light but rich on the palate, you can now enjoy Indian dishes without filling the guilt.

Papadum Cones 4/5

First we had Papadum Cones ($5.80) which is crispy papadums shaped into cones and filled with a refreshing vegetable relish to tease our appetite. I could taste the cumin in almost every bite just the way I like it to be and it was extremely crispy.

D'Bell Kofta Kebab 4.2/5

Next served on the table was the D'Bell Kofta Kebab ($18), beef croquette filled with cheddar cheese, prunes and dusted with semolina. The prunes teased out the taste of the beef which was quite an interesting combination. With the cheese in between and the mini naan at the side, it sort of reminded me of a burger? Beef, cheese and bread? Richer in taste among the starters, it is best to have it last. It would also serve a good companion to wines and cocktails.

The Tandorri Fish Nazaka ($22) comes in cubes of butterfish cooked over a charcoal flame. It is not heavily seasoned which is exactly how I like it. However the texture was not as tender and moist as I would like it to be.

Masala Aloo Tikki 4.5/5

The Masala Aloo Tikki ($10) instead of being overshadowed by its meaty counterparts, the crispy potato cake filled with green peas masala and coated with tamarind fruit chutney and minty yogurt sauce delighted me the most. The combustion of flavours and textures really took me by surprise. Bits of savoury, sweetness, sour is extremely yummy, not to forget the crispy topping.

Chilli Cheese Naan 4/5 and Kashmiri Naan 4.5/5

For the mains, of course we must have the quintessential naans to go with the different curries and Dal. We have the Chilli Cheese Naan ($8) and Kashmiri Naan ($8) which were freshly baked from the tandoor. Both type of naans were soft and fluffy but I much prefer Kashmiri with the curries. I simply love the combination of sweet and savory. I felt the curry did not really go well with chilli cheese naan. It was kind of overwhelming and did not do the curries justice with both flavours fighting against each other.

For the curries, we had the Goan Prawn Masala ($22), Chicken Tikka Masala ($18) and Mutton Rogan Josh ($20). The prawns were succulent, the chicken was tender and the mutton simply melted in the mouth. They were all very well executed and flavourful. Perfect match for the delightful naans.

Amritsari Dal 4.2/5

The Amritasari Dal ($12) which is simmered overnight on charcoal flame in authentic village style was grainy and chunky. Along with the curries and dal, we were served 3 different dips. The Fruit Chutney, Mint and Pickles have their own distinct taste and characters. The sweetness of the fruit chutney complemented the chilli naan very well. The pickles cut the creaminess of the curries by adding some tanginess to it. It was so good that I even asked for a second helping.

Mango Kulfi 4/5

For a sweet closure, we had the Mango Kulfi ($7.50), a Indian ice cream prepared with Alphonso mango. Not quite sure how to describe it but the consensus was it tasted like a frozen mango lassi. A very enjoyable dessert to cleanse the palate after all the curries and spices.

Overall, I did not go home with a heavy stomach but with a pleasant taste and spices lingering in my mouth. The 2 storey Indian restaurant besides the dining area on the ground floor,  has a bar on the 2nd floor which is very conducive for corporate events or even private celebrations. If you are looking for somewhere to chill, you may want to give this a try.

PappaRich @ Suntec City Mall

The popular Malaysian restaurant, PappaRich has finally set foot on the shore of Singapore. Within a short period of time, PappaRich has opened 4 restaurants in Singapore at Star Vista, Marine Parade, Suntec City Mall and Westgate with a fifth restaurant to be opened in middle 2014 at OneKM Mall, Tanjong Katong. Now the well-loved Malaysian restaurant chain has planted its footprints around Singapore delivering their delicious and authentic Malaysian delights in a comfortable setting to Singapore diners. My first taste of PappaRich was at their very first oversea expansion in Melbourne and since then they have not looked back. expanding into Singapore, Brunei and China with outlets in Indonesia, India and the United States soon to open.

Hainanese Steamed Bread 4.2/5

The Hainanese Steamed Bread ($3.90) is served with PappaRich's freshly homemade kaya. The extremely soft steamed bread is made from a traditional recipe. The original maker behind the recipe of the bread came from Hainan province. He worked in Malaya for a British bakery in the 1930s before he setup his own bakery in 1946. We now can ensure these pillow soft steamed bread at PappaRich because they bought the bread factory so that they could make the bread exclusively for their customers. The steamed bread also goes very well with the Half Boiled Egg ($2.90) that is cooked in a special temperature controlled water bath, giving it a semi runny consistence.

Super Rich Combo 4.5/5

This is really value for money. Inspired by a trip to the East Coast of Malaysia to get a taste of the best Nasi Kandar, the founder created this super combo dish. The Super Rich Combo ($16.90) is served with aromatic premium basmati rice, fried chicken drumstick, braised beef, sweet & spicy squid, potato, hard boiled egg, lady finger, papadum and sambal. To ensure PappaRich serves only the best crispy fried chicken, they even gone all the way to specially hired a famed chef who is known for cooking a very popular crispy fried chicken to work for them, dedicated solely in making this delicious crispy fried chicken.

Char Kuay Teow 4/5

You may want to just stop by PappaRich if you are craving for a plate of Penang Char Kuay Teow. The Char Kuay Teow ($9.90) uses flat noodles directly imported from Ipoh weekly. Wok fried together with prawns, cockles and beansprouts, this delectable plate of wok fried flat noodles will definitely satisfied your craving.

Vegetarian Curry Mutton 4/5

Besides servicing delicious Malaysia delights, PappaRich also offers some vegetarian items on their menu such as the Nasi Lemak with Vegetarian Curry Mutton, Nasi Rich with Vegetarian Curry Mutton and Vegetarian Nasi Lemak. We got a bowl of the Vegetarian Curry Mutton ($5.90) which is beautiful cooked in a medley of spices. I never knew vegetarian dish can also tasted so good.

Assam Laksa 3.8/5

The Assam Laksa ($10.90) was probably the weakest link of the dinner. Served with thick rice noodles, Ikan Kembung, shredded pineapple, lettuce, red chilli, cucumber, onion, lemon grass, shrimp paste and mint leave in a fish based tamarind broth, it was missing that tangy shiokness.

Curry Laksa 4.2/5

If you do not enjoy the sourness of the assam laksa, I would recommend the more lemak Curry Laksa ($9.90). The mouth watering bowl of noodles in spicy coconut curry gravy comes with chicken, cockles, tofu puffs and foo chok. I had this in PappaRich Melbourne and I like the version in Singapore more because the gravy is more spicy.

Wan Tan Hor 4.8/5

This is definitely the surprise dish for the night that knocked me out of my chair. More commonly found in Zi Char stall, I didn't know PappaRich offers the Wan Tan Hor ($10.90) in the menu. Packed with wok hei flavour and covered in a delish egg gravy, this is one dish that I will come back for.

Chendol 4/5

Using freshly made chendol and gula melaka from Malacca, the Chendol ($3.90) is the perfect sweet ending for a delicious dinner.

The food at PappaRich definitely did not disappoint me. I am glad that they have managed to maintain their quality given that it is a chain restaurant with an ambitious expansion plan. They have also managed to keep the pricing very reasonable and affordable while not cutting back on the quantity. Given a choice, I would prefer to dine at PappaRich compared to another Malaysia brand that has also recently opened an outlet in Singapore.

Ivy's Hainanese Herbal Mutton Soup @ Kim Keat Palm Food Centre

After breakfast at Uncle Kun's Delicacies, Ian, Philip and me took a stroll to Toa Payoh Lorong 7 where they introduced me to Ivy's Hainanese Herbal Mutton Soup. So where and who is Ivy? Well I did not get to meet Ivy but instead the stall owner Mr Max Ng. Apparently there is a love story behind this bowl of Hainanese herbal mutton soup. Max was wooing Ivy and knowing she likes the dish, learnt to cook the dish, winning both her palate and heart. Ivy is now his wife and he has name the stall after her.

When we arrived at the stall, Max was busy at work preparing the mutton for the day. The mutton was marinated with fermented beancurd and seared in hot oil to remove the gaminess.

Herbal Mutton Soup 4.5/5

I was quite taken back when the bowl of Herbal Mutton Soup ($7-$9) was served. A sip of the soup I could taste the different from most mutton soup. Most stalls uses a lot of ginger to reduce the gaminess but in this bowl of mutton soup, I could taste the bittersweet of the herbs, a good body but not overpowering. The price may sounds a bit expensive but it was brimming with generous serving of fish maws, black fungus, tau pok and mutton.

Patron can enjoy this potent and hearty bowl of herbal mutton soup without the worry of gaminess. The painstaking process to marinate, prepare the mutton and cooked in a herbal broth helps to remove that unpleasant taste. Also worth mentioning is the specially homemade chilli sauce. Dip the tender mutton with it to fully enjoyed the flavour of the mutton. Without doubt this is one of the best herbal mutton soup that I have eaten and definitely my favourite now. No wonder Max was able to win Ivy's hand with this delish bowl of herbal mutton soup.

Gokul Vegetarian Restaurant @ Upper Dickson Road (Little India)

I think most people like me if given a choice will not visit any vegetarian restaurants. There is just this unsatisfactory feeling of not being full when one does not consume meat for a meal. However it does not mean that vegetarian food is not delicious and I have been introduced to probably one of the best vegetarian restaurant in town by Luke aka Hungry Angmo our vegetarian food blogger who brought Nat and me to Gokul Vegetairan Restaurant at Little India. It opened my eye to a whole new perspective of vegetarian food.

Lemongrass Juice 4/5

I was overwhelmed by the huge menu at Gokul Vegetairan Restaurant that includes North Indian, South Indian and Asian fusion vegetarian cuisine. According to Luke, there are over 500 over items in the menu. That is a menu that is not easy for any ordinary kitchen to pull it off.

We started with one of Luke's favourite drink which is the Lemongrass Juice ($5). The melange of green apple, mint, pandan and lemongrass gave the drink a good refreshing start to the dinner.

Char Kway Teow 4/5

An Indian restaurant serving an Asian local hawker fare as a vegetarian dish, this just caught my attention and I had to order it to find out how the rendition of the Char Kway Teow ($7.50) taste? Of course there was no cockles or fish cakes but substituted with beancurd and vegetables. The stir fried flat noodles in black saue was surprising  very well executed and not oily. It was really close to the real thing without the cockles and fish cakes.

Hyderabad Dum Briyani 4/5

For a full meal, one can go for the Hyderabad Dum Briyani ($10). Love that the restaurant used basmatic rice for their briyani. The long grain rice was fragrant and fluffy. Hidden in the pile of rice was the delectable masala soya chunks.

Mysore Mutton 4.5/5

The Mysore Mutton ($9) was my favourite for the night. The vegetarian mutton was cooked in mysore gravy that was so delish with all the different delectable spices hitting the palate. Even the texture of the vegetarian mutton was so close to the real thing that I could be easily fooled if in a blind tasting. We also got the romali roti to go with the mysore mutton.

Malai Kofta 4.2/5

I called it the twin tower when the Malai Kofta ($10) was served. It definitely is a eye catching dish. The kofta cooked in Mughlai style has a smooth and creamy gravy drench over the towering kofta. I am not exactly sure what is in it but I could taste potato. It was my first encounter of the dish and I totally enjoyed it. Kind of having a potato salad in a creamy sauce.

I have to say I had a satisfying dinner at Gokul. I left not feeling that I have actually eaten vegetarian. I have never expected vegetarian dish can be so tasty and I applauded their vegetarian rendition of Asian cuisine.  There are so many items on their menu that I want to check out and I am sure they will be as good as what I had. Time to plan for my next visit.

Vatan Se @ Costa Rhu Clubhouse

When I was told that there is an Indian restaurant inside the Costa Rhu Condominium's Clubhouse, I was really curious to check out what sort of restaurant has decided to be nestled in the Tanjong Rhu area surrounded by block after block of condominium apartments. To be frank who in the public would have thought that there is an Indian restaurant inside a condominium and it is open to the public.

Vatan Se is a small homely Indian restaurant. The owner who used to be an architect decided to quit his job and pursue his passion for cooking and eating. Vante Se strives to bring to its customers food from home, just the way one would cook their food at home. The food is cooked with minimum oil and uses the best available ingredients. No artificial red and orange food colourings or MSG were used in the cooking.

Complimentary Papadum is served with a mint dipping sauce while the kitchen prepares your order. I like the idea that the papad is folded into a corn shape so we can get that cracking sound when we get to break it to go with the mint dipping sauce. It just shows that the papadum was freshly made.

A popular Indian street food, the Chaat Papri ($6) was definitely my first encounter. It looked quite messy in appearance but the mixture of mint, yogurt, coriander and crisp fried dough wafers was bursting with an array of beautiful flavours working harmoniously together.

To showcases the delectable food prepared by the Tandoor (a cylindrical clay oven), I got to try the Ajwaini Paneer Tikka ($11 for full portion), Achari Fish Tikka ($12 for full portion), Mutton Seekh Kebah ($12 for full portion) and Kali Mirchi Chicken Tikka ($14 for full portion). The beauty of cooking with Tandoor is that it uses the radiant heat of the charcoal to cook the food, locking the juiciness of the meat as well as being fragrant by the smokey charcoal fire. My favourite among the platter was the Kali Mirchi Chicken Tikka and Ajwaini Paneer Tikka.

I am told that not many Indian restaurants make Roomali or Rumali Roti. It is basically a thin flatbread that has a delectable bite to it. I love the texture of it and its my new must order when I next visit another Indian restaurant. A must order for me at Vatan Se has to be the Chicken Roomali Roll ($12). Jam packed with beautifully marinated chicken wrapped with the roomali, it's a delish meal by itself.

Moving on to the mains, I have opted for the Roomali Roti ($3.50) to the rice. Yes I could not get enough of the roomali roti. Served folded like a handkerchief, the thin flatbread was huge! It can cover the whole face.

Roghan Josh ($16 for full portion) a traditional Kashmiri goat mutton curry blown me away with its lovely flavours and aromatic spiciness. The goat mutton was really tender and it melted in the mouth.

Dhaba Daal 3.5/5

A staple India dish, the Daalis often eaten together with rice and roti. I am a good fan of lentils but I have to say the Dhaba Daal ($9.00) was really good and went well with the roomali roti.

Kesar Kulfi 4/5

Dessert was Kesar Kulfi ($6 for full portion) a type of Indian ice cream dessert. I was already very full after the heavy meal but I could not resist finishing the kesar kulfi. The ice cream was extremely sweet but I enjoyed it a lot because it was drenched in condense milk sauce and topped with pistachio. All my favourite!

After finishing my meal, the owner showed me a rectangular box filled with colourful spices. I was told to grab a mouthful and pop inside my mouth to chew on. It is actually quite interesting. It tasted like mouthwash and the spices help to cleanse the palate.

I like the owner's enthusiasm toward's his food. It shows he is servicing food from his heart. We both agreed that there is no such thing as authentic Indian food when you are outside India. One can only strive their best to bring the authentic flavours to their customers. With this in mind, his kitchen uses specially handcrafted copper pots brought in all the way from India to prepare the food in the restaurant.
