Fika Swedish Cafe & Bistro @ OneKM Mall

20160221_125805_HDR

If you spot a Swede having his afternoon tea, he is doing what they called Fika. A cup of coffee, together with some pastries or sandwiches, it is an activity that Swedes, and many of us, resonates with. I chanced upon the concept of fika when researching for my Scandinavian trip last year, and coming to Fika Swedish Cafe & Bistro at OneKM Mall gave me the chance to try food that I have missed out during my short vacation in Sweden.

A flagstone footpath led us into the porch of Fika. Behind the white painted walls I could see the hosts busy preparing food for their guests. What's eye-catching is the Falu red wall, a colour unique to Sweden. This is the centralised work station that churns out all the cakes and pastries that you will taste in all of Fika's outlets. This is a traditional Swedish setting, where guests are host at the porch. There are two other Fika outlets in Singapore with their respective theme - at Arab Street, you will find yourself dining inside their Swedish house, while at Millenia Walk, contemporary is the mood.

Rosehip Soup - (Nyponsoppa) 3.5/5

It was a really hot day, hence I opted for a cold Rosehip Soup - (Nyponsoppa) for a refreshing start. It is sweet with a hint of sourness, almost like a hawthorn drink, but with a viscosity.

Red Beet Salad 2.5/5

I had 2 salads - Red Beet Salad - Rödbetssallad ($7.90) and Långedrag ($18.90). Red beet is more like a side dish, similar to a coleslaw but made with pickled beets and apple. The beets are pickled, which makes it really appetising, and despite its strong flavour, it blends really well with the sweetness of the apple. I could have wiped the bowl clean, really, should it have not been drown by the mayonnaise.

Långedrag 3.5/5

Långedrag is your typical salad, but topped with Swedish fresh-water shrimps. Despite their miniscule physic, each of them may surprise you with its concentrated sweet, savoury taste. Hence, just a handful of it is enough to dress the entire plate of greens.

Toast Skagen 3.8/5

Swedish fresh-water shrimps goes well not just with salads, but great on toasts too. When mixed with mayonnaise and dills, it forms a creamy, savoury topping with a crunch. A dash of lemon will balance the taste with tang and acidity. The first time I had this was at Smor at One Raffles Place, which made me go searching for it all the time during my trip in Scandinavia. It is not typically offered elsewhere in other places, perhaps due to the high cost of the imported ingredients. Although I find the price rather steep for sandwiches, but go for Toast Skagen ($21.90) if you want to enjoy the beauty of these tiny shrimps.

Swedish Meatballs 4.2/5

For mains, I'm sure you are quite familiar with Swedish Meatballs - Köttbullar med persiljepotatis och lingonsylt ($19.90), a dish imprinted in many of our mind to be primarily what Swedish cuisine is about, after Ikea at Queensway first introduced it to us. However, nothing can compared to freshly made meatballs, especially when they are fat and juicy, well peppered, spiced and salted. A traditional brown sauce for meatballs consists beef broth and sour cream, hence you get that beefiness spiked with a bit of tang. Piquant, but not too creamy nor heavy, which complements the flavour of the meatballs well. Accessorised with the tart Swedish's staple lingonberry jam, every bite of the meatball is packed with an array of flavours, and most importantly, without the gaminess.

Herb-crusted Salmon 3.5/5

Salmon, apart from herring, is common in Nordic cuisine, smoked salmon especially. Over here at Fika, they have a Swedish inspired Herb-crusted Salmon - Kryddbakad lax med glaserade rödbetor och citronsmörsås ($26.50). Like the meatballs, the salmon was gracefully plated atop potato mash, with a layer of beautiful herb crust. The salmon was tender and flaky, however, the much anticipated herb crust falls flat with its flavorless profile. A very wholesome and nutritious dish nonetheless, given its portion and the choice of side dishes.

Creamy Pasta 3/5

More conventional options are available, such as pasta. We tried their recommended Creamy Pasta - Krämig pasta ($21.90). Apart from turkey ham, there are leek and mushrooms, hence I considered it as a healthier option of Carbonara. I would appreciate if there is more doses of leek as the pasta seems to be overwhelmed with ham.

Semla 2.5/5

With everything baked in house, we couldn't leave without trying the dessert, could we? Although we were really filled. We were in time for their once-a-year dessert - Semla ($4.90). After trying, indeed, it is as described - doughy buns of sin. Each Semla is a cocoon of a thick and oozy almond paste, that comforts the souls of many Swedes residing in Singapore. I can imagine having it in front of a fireplace, where I'm warmly hugged by a comforter. However, over here, I just couldn't agree with its level of sweetness.

20160221_141456_HDR
Swedish Pancakes 3/5

We also had their Swedish Pancakes - Pannkakor med bär, chokladsås och vispad grädde  ($12.90 Ice-cream top-up: Vanilla $1.50). I learnt that Swedish Pancakes are thicker and eggier than French Crepes, rather than airy and fluffy. Given such a texture, I believe their savoury crepes will be better choice. We saw that the very traditional Princess Cake is on the menu too, but it wasn't ready for us that day. Next time perhaps.

Lingonberry Milkshake 3.5/5

If you just want to enjoy the ambience, do drop by for their unique selection of drinks. Cold, rich and creamy, their Lingonberry Milkshake will be worth your calories.

Dining here at Fika has been a very enjoyable experience. Despite it being inside a mall, I felt like I have been sheltered away from the hustle and bustle of the weekend crowd. If you are curious about Swedish cuisine, this is perhaps the most accessible place that you can get.

Triple-O's @ Orchard Towers

IMG_4183ed

I have to confess that I have not heard of Triple-O's until my recent visit to the burger chain at Orchard Tower. The popular burger chain from Vancouver since 1928 has quietly come to our shore without much rah-rah. Can you believe that this burger chain is older than Macdonald? Currently they have 3 outlets at Orchard Tower, Star Vista and Asia Square Mall. Triple O's proud themselves for serving the sauciest, juiciest, tastiest and bestest burgers in town.

Breakfast Club 4.2/5

We started our meal with Triple-O's Breakfast Club Burger ($7.90). The burger which comes with bacon, egg and hashbrown is sandwiched in a delectable soft bun and drenched with a delish special sauce. Triple-O's is not exactly a fast food chain as their burgers are freshly made to order, so do expect to wait around 7 minutes before it is served. What is having a burger without fries and milkshake. The Sweet Potato Fries ($2.90) was crispy on the outside and soft inside served with chipotle sauce while the milkshake was thick and creamy.

IMG_4186ed
Bacon Cheese Burger 4.2/5

A thing to note at Triple-O's is that the burger's pickle is served separately. Some customers do not like pickle and I thought this is a good way for them to decide themselves whether to add the pickle to their burger or not. The Bacon Cheese Burger ($12.90) was pretty juicy and tasty. Each bite came with delightful crispy bacon as the freshly made beef patty was fully wrapped with bacon.

IMG_4188ed
Fish Burger 3.5/5

The Fish Burger ($13.90) came with a fried pickle which you have a choice to whether add to your burger. While the fish fillet was thick and moist, I felt the burger lacked a satisfying sauce to hold it together. As the burger comes in 2 separate fillets, it was also a bit difficult to handle and eat.

IMG_4170ed

With the availability of space at the new outlet at Orchard Tower, the owner has also introduced Felix's Corner. A little space for the their French chef to offer some French delicacies.

IMG_4177ed
French Style Egg Benedict 4.2/5

From Felix's Corner, I tried the French Style Egg Benedict ($8.90). I have to admit the appearance of the dish served in styrofoam plate turned me off with its presentation. Never judge a book by its cover, how true it was with Felix's Corner's version of Egg Benedict. Unlike the usual poached egg, the chef cut a hole in the brioche and cracked an egg inside it. The soft and buttery brioche with fried egg drenched with a homemade hollandaise sauce was surprisingly so good that I could not help going back for more.

Whole Wheat Waffle with Syrup & Peanut Butter 4/5

The other item I tried was the Whole Wheat Waffle with Syrup & Peanut Butter ($4.50). Toasty crisp on the outside, fluffy and buttery in the outside, this is one of the better waffle I had.

I can't help to compare Triple-O's with Omakase. Considered the burgers at Triple-O's are made to order and the size of it, I am more than happy to pay for it. I am glad that I have found a good burger to go to now.

MakeShake @ City Square Mall

IMG_5407

MakeShake is the first and only customizable premium milkshake concept in Singapore. The kiosk is located at basement 2 of City Square Mall. Started almost a year back at its new location, I only get to try recent in a meet up with Melissa and Celes after their tasting session nearby.

IMG_5405
SuperNana and Mangro Zilla

The concept is pretty simple like ABC with 3 simple steps. 1) Choose the base. 2) Mix and Match Flavours. 3) Add Toppings. However, it took both Celes and me quite a long while to decide because there were just too many combinations that we can mix and match with. For those like us that couldn't decide what to order, worry not as MakeShake has 8 recommended combination milkshakes.

IMG_5404
SuperNana 4.5/5

I had the SuperNana ($4.80 regular, $6.20 large) which is a blend of Froyo yoghurt with strawberry and banana. The milkshake was not as sweet compare to most and it had a nice natural flavours of the strawberry and banana.

Once Upon A Milkshake @ Maxwell Chambers

I have been procrastinating on this post since Charles proposed to Charlene on 25 June 2011. Charles has gathered a group of us to plan a fake food tasting session at Once Upon A Milkshake (OUAM) at Maxwell Chambers. Credit to OUAM and its staff for accommodating and making it a success.

You can read more about the lovely proposal on Charlene's Blog and Maureen's Blog.

I have to confess I am a big fan of OUAM's milkshake. Their premium ice cream milkshakes are good. They also have interesting character names to associate with each flavour. Recently, they have added 8 more new flavours to their menu.

Once Upon A Milkshake @ Maxwell Chambers

Once Upon A Milkshake aka OUAM provides patrons with premium ice cream milkshakes. Their milkshakes are produced by blending OUAM premium range of home-made ice cream with quality low fat milk.

Once inside the restaurant, you will feel like stepping into a children play house with miniature chairs and tables in a purple colour theme fairyland.

OUAM offers 10 different ice cream flavours for your milkshake. Accordingly to the waitress, the popular flavours are agent strawberry and chocolate truffle castle

Different ice cream flavours

Usually in a milkshake you will find that it is very sweet maybe due to the amount of sugar syrup in it and the difficulty in sucking up the milkshake with your straw. At OUAM a sip and I can taste the different in texture and sweetness. The texture was smooth and sweetness was just nice. We ordered the chocolate truffle castle and nutty peanut butler milkshakes.

Milkshakes 4.5/5

To get here, alight at Tanjong Pagar MRT station and proceed to exit B. Maxwell Chambers where OUAM is located is just across the road.
