Gake @ Carpenter Street - 7-Course Omakase For $88

Gake25

I got to know Chef Angus Chow when he was the Head Chef of Boruto. After bagging the Chef of the Year award at the 18th Word Gourmet Summit Awards of Excellence in 2018, Chef Angus Chow embarked on a new venture to open his own restaurant, Gake at Carpenter Street, offering contemporary Japanese cuisine.

Gake2
Seasonal Otoshi 3.5/5

We had the new $88 omakase menu which started with Seasonal Otoshi. Like an amuse-bouche, the Japanese nibble comes in the form of a Smoke Quail Egg with Caviar and Potato Mille-fuille with Truffle Rugout. I preferred the potato mille-fuille as there are more textures at play.

Gake5
Sashimi Mori 3 Kinds 4/5

Next, we have Sashimi Mori 3 Kinds. From the day's fresh selection, we have the sea brim, bluefin tuna and hamachi.

Gake11
Kulhbarra Barramundi 4/5

From the local farm is the Kulhbarra Barramundi. The fish is grilled to a nice char on the exterior while the meat remains moist. It is paired with butter ponzu and orange marmalade sauce, which complemented the fish excellently.

Gake14
USDA Beef Hayashi 4/5

Hidden under the espuma of potato and seasonal vegetables is the USDA Beef Hayashi. The beef must have been cooked for hours, with melted in the mouth texture that is packed with lovely flavour.

Gake19
Uni & Ikura Donburi 4.2/5

Gake16
Asari Miso 3/5

The highlight of the omakase dinner probably lies in the Uni & Ikura Donburi. The sushi rice uses 6 different kinds of grain and crowned with bafun uni, caviar and ajtisuke ikura, A luxurious bowl of sushi rice indeed. A bowl of Asari Miso is also served which comes with plump and juicy clams in a miso bonito broth.

Gake22
Dessert of the day 3.5/5

Wrapping up the omakase meal is the Spong Cake drenched in a chocolate cream cheese sauce and gula melaka. A decent dessert of the day to wrap up the meal on a sweet note. However, I was craving for something for Japanese instead.

Gake7
Charcoal Chicken Karaage 4.2/5

Beside offering omakase on the menu, Gake also has an ala carte menu with some signature items. One of them is the Charcoal Chicken Karaage ($12.80). The juicy morsels of spiced chicken are coated in their famous charcoal-infused batter, served with a side of tobiko mayonnaise. They are crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside.

Gake24
Truffle Hiyashi Somen 4/5

A crowd favourite is the Truffle Hiyashi Somen (With Uni $38.80, Without Uni $18.80). The cold rice noodles are drenched in an addictive creamy truffle emulsion. It is then topped with sakura ebi, Avruga caviar, tobiko and shaved truffle. We opted for the uni, which gives it an unami finishing on top of all the complex but robust flavours.

I find that the new omakase menu at $88 for seven courses is really value for money. Of course, you won't get the traditional Japanese cuisine which is focused on showcasing the freshness of the seafood and seasonal ingredients. Over at Gake, European cooking techniques and local flavours are infused into Japanese cuisine.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

Izy Fook (一起福) @ Club Street - Izy-ly A Match In Paradise

IzyFook10

Izy Dining & Bar at Club Street has been renamed as Izy Fook (一起福) with its new collaboration with Roast Paradise, bringing their famed char siu and roasted pork to the new izakaya centric menu.

IzyFook1
White Bait 3.5/5

We started our dinner with some snack and small plates. The White Bait ($8) with XO chilli dip is an addictive snack that goes well with the drinks.

IzyFook2
Amber Jack Ceviche 4.2/5

You will get a burst of flavours from the fresh Amber Jack Ceviche ($18) in a spicy kampong dressing and calamansi.

IzyFook7
Karaage 4.5/5

I wasn't expecting much for the Karaage ($12 for 3pc), but this has to be one of the best I have eaten. It is plump, juicy and crispy on the exterior.

IzyFook6
Cereal Soft Shell Prawns 4.8/5

A must-order is the Cereal Soft Shell Prawns ($24 for 4pc). I can smell the aroma from the cereal and curry leaf from a mile away. This is complemented by the chilli aioli dressing. The huge prawn is succulent and so crispy that you can eat it together with the shell.

IzyFook9
Steamed Clams in Dashi 4.5/5

Still on seafood is the Steamed Clams in Dashi ($34 Large). Plump, sweet and juicy were the clams, perked up by the flavoursome dashi broth.

IzyFook8
Char Siu 4.5/5, Roasted Pork 4.2/5

Of course, the highlight on the menu is Roast Paradise's Char Siu ($40 Large) and Roasted Pork ($40 Large). I have heard so many good words about their char siu and roasted pork. Hence I am really looking forward to trying it. The char siu is not overly sweet and has the right amount of fat and lean ratio. The roasted pork, on the other hand, is fat, juicy and crispy on the skin.

IzyFook14
Wagyu 2GR Oyster Blade 4.5/5

izy didn't make it for roast paradise either, it has its own triumph card in the Wagyu 2GR Oyster Blade ($135 per 500g). Cooked to perfection, there is no need for any seasoning or sauce. The beautiful pink cuts were flavourful on its own and tender in texture.

IzyFook11
Superior Prawn Mee Pok 4.8/5

A luxurious take of the local mee pok is the Superior Prawn Mee Pok ($19). It comes with ingredients such as tiger prawn, pork, lap cheung, sakura ebi and egg. What I really enjoy is not the luxe ingredients but the robust broth that holds the bowl together, complementing the al dente noodle.

IzyFook17
Wagyu Truffle Don 3/5

The Wagyu Truffle Don ($58 Large) may smell good with the shaved truffle crowning the nanatsuboshi rice bowl, but it paled in comparison to the other dishes. It is mediocre with the cut of wagyu beef used.

IzyFook20
Spices Chocolate 3.5/5, Houjicha Catalana 3.5/5

Wrapping up the dinner, we have the Spices Chocolate ($10) and Houjicha Catalana ($19). They are decent dessert, but I probably will skip these and all more of the savouries which really impressed me. Izy Fook is definitely one of those places that I will be going back again.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

Gaijin @ KAP Residences Mall - Fuss-Free Japanese Soul Food

Gaijin15

Gaijin is a casual two-storey Japanese restaurant in King Albert Park Mall, offering staples such as ramen, udon, and donburi. Where food choices are somewhat limited in the neighbourhood, among the residents and office crowd in the vicinity, Gaijin is quickly becoming a place known for its quality yet affordable Japanese comfort food.

Gaijin2
Gaijin Karaage 3.8/5

Gaijin has a secret weapon to ensure that all its fried items are moist and succulent - that is Dr Fry. Thanks to its unique physical water molecule control technology, your fried food will stay succulent and crispy for a longer period of time, even with a reduction in the absorption of oil. The results were evident in my Gaijin Karaage ($8 for 3pc or $12 for 5 pc). These chicken thigh chunks had a light brown skin that was thin and crispy. There was a good portion of the nicely flavoured meat in every bite, rather than a mouthful of greasy fried skin and fats.

Gaijin16
Katsu Curry Don 3.5/5

Likewise, for the Katsu Curry Don ($15), the Hokkaido Shiro Buta (snow pork) was moist and juicy with a thin, crispy skin. Given the serving size of the tonkatsu, this is quite value-for-money. However, the curry can be better. It combines the flavour profiles of two Japanese curry styles - one that’s more savoury and one that’s sweet and fruity. Although butter was added to it to bring out the flavours of the spices, I feel it wasn't as robust as I had expected it to be.

Gaijin17
Gyudon 3.8/5

Hence, Gyudon ($14) satisfied me much more with its thinly-sliced premium Angus beef, which is chosen for its higher fat percentage. The longer these beef slices sit on your rice, the more the fats will melt into the rice underneath. The combination of the melted fats, the housemade yakiniku sauce and the juice from the sliced welsh onions made the rice really flavourful. Thus, it will take minimal effort to wipe this bowl clean.

Gaijin9
Ebi Tempura Udon 3.5/5

The menu also covers staples such as udon and ramen. Ebi Tempura Udon ($13) uses Inaniwa udon which is relatively thinner and smoother, and its extra chewy texture works well in both cold and hot broth. The Ebi Tempura Udon serves the udon in a light dashi-based broth. The broth tasted a tad salty when I had it alone with the udon, but its higher salt content made it just right as a sauce for the accompanying tempura. The tempura set includes two black tiger prawns and assorted vegetables of the day.

Gaijin5
Shio Tonkotsu Ramen with Kara Chilli Paste 3.5/5

It is rare to find a casual dining place that serves up decent ramen, and the Shio Tonkotsu Ramen ($12) did well with the addition of its homemade Special “Kara” chilli paste ($1). Despite the layer of homemade black garlic oil and pork fat oil floating on top of the broth, this salt-seasoned tonkotsu broth felt light on the palate after I mixed everything in, including the homemade shrimp-based chilli paste. The chilli paste provides more than just heat to the dish. A dollop of it adds depths of flavours into the broth. You will have the options from level one “mild spiciness” to level three “hot”. I reckon you can just go for level three ''hot''.

Gaijin10

Meant to be wallet-friendly, Gaijin offers sake from Saito, Nanbubijin and more from $18 to $35 to complete the dining experience.

Cartoon Network Cafe by The Soup Spoon @ Punggol Waterway Point - Character Theme Pop-Up Café Featuring Powerpuff Girls, We Bare Bears, Ben 10 And Adventure Time Land

CNCAFE_1

Following a collaboration between The Soup Spoon Union and Cartoon Network Asia-Pacific, a cartoon-themed cafe, Cartoon Network Cafe by The Soup Spoon Union opened its doors just last month at the Waterway Point Mall in Punggol. A setup thoughtfully decorated with statues, cutouts and toys of loved characters such as the Powerpuff Girls, We Bare Bears, Ben 10 and Adventure Time Land, it renders every spot in this fun-filled 93-seater café an IG-worthy haven that will have all the kids (and even adults) screaming internally in delight. Its appeal is further amplified with a wide variety of dish offerings inspired by the animated shows and its characters that will instantly transport you back to the good ol' days. We stepped in and dove right into their extensive menu featuring a slew of pretty themed dishes ranging from appetisers, mains, desserts, drinks and milkshakes. Big on visuals but how do they fare in taste?

CNCAFE_8
Finn & Jake’s Chicken with Red Velvet Waffles 3.5/5

The Finn & Jake’s Chicken with Red Velvet Waffles ($15.90) features crispy pops of chicken karaage with red velvet waffles. A different take on the classic chicken waffles dish, the red velvet waffles is a sweeter rendition with a cakey brownie-like texture and a strong hint of cocoa flavour. The waffles may be a tad too dry but it is made better with a liberal drizzle of the accompanying honey served alongside, as well as the crispy and juicy chicken karrage pieces that were well-executed. A sweet and savoury marriage of flavours which surprisingly worked out for me.

CNCAFE_12
Pan-Pan Calzone 3.5/5

The Pan-Pan Calzone ($10.90) is essentially a folded in version of pizza in a huge pie-like shape. Biting into the crisp crusted exterior reveals savoury insides, with tomato sauce, cheese and meats. Decently executed, this dish is a hit among the kids.

CNCAFE_9
We Bare Bears Angus Ribeye Steak 3/5

The We Bare Bears Angus Ribeye Steak ($23.80) comes with a beef ribeye steak and a side of fries and salad. Done medium rare, the steak is grilled to a slightly tougher texture and a tad dry lacking the succulence and seasonings for that burst of flavours.

CNCAFE_10
Grizzly Beef Burger 3/5

The Grizzly Beef Burger ($18.80) features generous ingredients including the beef patty, onion rings, sunny side up egg, mushrooms and cheese centred between soft brioche toasted buns that has We Bare Bear’s big brother Grizz’s face with two small sausages that made up its ears. The beef patty boasts a softer texture though the overall quality was below satisfactory due to the tasteless meat which lacked seasonings. The only flavours that came through were perhaps the cheese and thin pieces of onion rings sandwiched in between.

CNCAFE_5
Blossom Strawberry Soda 3.8/5

For the drinks, we had the Blossom Strawberry Soda ($10.90) which comes in a flask of strawberry flavoured soda and a fluffy cloud of cotton candy perched on top of a beaker of strawberry and lemon slices. Pouring the strawberry drink in melts the cotton candy in the process, which adds a sufficient sweetness to the strawberry soda, giving it a non-cloying and refreshing taste to the drink with a slight tangy tinge of lemon.

CNCAFE_13
Bubbles Cheesecake 3.8/5

From the desserts menu, we had the Bubbles Cheesecake ($14.90) which features a gorgeously plated dish of creamy cheesecake slice, sweet berries, whipped cream, biscuit crumbles and cotton candy on the side. The cheesecake boasts a soft texture with a rich cheese flavour to it, while the crumbles added a crunch to the soft cheesecake, as well as a mild saltiness to the sweetness of the cheesecake for a more balanced flavour of the dessert.

CNCAFE_3

The Cartoon Network Café has done well with the decorations of the place and design of its themed dishes, yet there are still much room for improvement in terms of the food quality. Although it does curate a fun-filled and memorable dining experience for the kids, the prices may be a bit too steep as like the other character cafes in Singapore, which might make visits a one-time experience for most. However, as the characters featured will be rotated every 3 to 6 months, we wait in anticipation as it brings back opportunities to excite taste buds and have crowds of people showing up for another unique dining experience at CN Café again.

B Burger @ Orchard Cathay Cineleisure - The Local Version Of Shake Shack?

BBurger1

Gourmet burgers in a quick service restaurant format, The Benjamin Barker Group newest burger joint – B Burger at Cathay Cineleisure Orchard is set to go satisfy your burger craving with its juicy, handmade patties, alongside with pretty sinful desserts. Inspired by American burger joints such as Shake Shack and In-N-Out, B Burger carries similar laid-back vibe with American rock music playing in the background. My favourite feature of this colourful place is the Scrabble-like menu board, that allows you to play the labels around.

BBurger15
Baller Burger 3.8/5

Though infused with a Japanese twist, the burgers here are inherently American. Each order is made ala minute, hence expect 6 to 10 minutes of waiting time. First up on the menu is B Burger, a basic burger for customers who simply just want to enjoy the meat. You can even triple up the beef patty if a single 100g patty is insatiable. Umami burger is a meatless version, with a Buttermilk Fried Portobello replacing your meat. Combining these two gets me a Baller Burger ($10.90), which I feel is really the best of both worlds - a large piece of fried Portobello which has a firm bite to it, supplementing the juicy beef patty which has a slightly loose texture. Then it comes the secret sauce - B Sauce, which elevates the burger with a sweet and tangy zing. I really love the home pickled daikon found in some of the burgers here - sweet and a little acidic but not vinegary.

BBurger27
B Supreme 4/5

Sliding in an aged cheddar, B Supreme ($9.90) gains a savoury height and flavour that are brought to balance with sweet notes from caramelised onions. The smell of the warm truffle aroma greets my nose even before I get to hold the burger in my hand. The sautéed mushrooms are chunky, with flavour and aroma accentuated by truffle mayo. The bun does get a little soggy after a while, which I think the team needs to address this abit. Still, this burger is finger-licking good.

BBurger30
Bomchika Wow Wow 3/5

Although I feel burgers should be experienced with beef patty, Bomchika Wow Wow ($10.90) is a satisfying burger in its own right. Big chunks of kaarage chicken topped with fried egg, its physique beckons you to reach out for it. It may sound greasy but the crunchy wafu slaw and piquant daikon pickles bring it to a balance. Sweet with a tinge of spiciness, the sticky sriracha honey that glazed the fried chicken gives this burger a new identity that differentiate itself from other fried chicken burgers.

BBurger17
Osaka Corn Dog 2.5/5

A interesting snack to try would be Osaka Corn Dog ($6.90) which is a cheese corndog topped with tobiko, teriyaki, mayo and nori. When the sausage itself is already salty, I feel there are too much savoury condiments dressing it.

BBurger35
Sides 2.8/5

Complete your meal by topping up $3.50 with every main order and get a side of wafu ramen slaw, nacho soup or fries and drink (soft drinks, add $1 for other drinks, excluding milkshakes). If you have always loved nacho cheese dip, you get your wish with this Nacho Soup ($3). It is a tone-down version with a tinge of spiciness but nonetheless, it is still as rich. Curry Beef Fries ($5) is similar to Carl's Jr beef chilli cheese fries but a much more scaled down version with a Japanese flavour.

BBurger12
S’mores 2.8/5

Not easy to find milkshakes these day, so do try one of its creation. S’mores ($6.90) is a simple concoction of vanilla ice-cream mixed with Nutella which I thought makes a good grab & go as well. Freshly Cut Coconut ($5.90) is available if you want something a lot healthier but at this price, maybe not.

BBurger47
Death By Chocolate 3.2/5 and Peanut Butter Jelly 2.5/5

Still have room for more? Another noteworthy item from B Burger is its Homemade Concretes ($7.50 – two scoops of concretes with toppings), made from adding egg yolk to ice cream to achieve a denser and creamier body. We tried Peanut Butter Jelly (Vanilla, Peanut Butter, Strawberry, Horlicks, Granola, Peanut Butter Cups, Toasted Bread Cracker) and Death By Chocolate (Chocolate, Oreos, Hersheys, Chocolate Wafers, Sea Salt). Death By Chocolate won me over with its sticky, rich chocolaty texture. It's sweet but with hints of bitterness. The sprinkle of sea salt adds burst of intensity that I really enjoy.

BBurger24

In terms of pricing, quality and taste, B Burger has a balance of all 3 factors, making it a notch higher than a few other brands of similar concept. Yes, it's a burger place that I would return to.

Miffy x Kumoya Pop-Up Café @ Jalan Klapa – The First Miffy Café Opens In Singapore

flatlay2

Kumoya Cafe. First of its kind in Singapore, this halal-certified Japanese-French cafe with a pop-up concept introduces a brand new character theme this season. Can you guess which? Following its previous successful collaboration with the Sanrio character Cinnamoroll, another adorable character hops in and takes over Kumoya. It's none other than the Dutch Artist Dick Bruna's cartoon bunny Miffy!

Fans of Miffy rejoice, as from 5th October to 31st December, Miffy x Kumoya Pop-Up Café opens in Singapore. Here, one can expect a wide range of Miffy-inspired dishes and drinks in the menu, meticulously curated and creatively styled by food artist Shirley Wong (@littlemissbento), as well as whimisical interiors decked out in Miffy-themed decor to create an inclusive experience for diners to immerse themselves wholly in the world of Miffy.

wonderfully waffles with karaage chicken
Wonderfully Waffles with Karaage Chicken 4.2/5

The first main course I had, also pegged as the most popular main item in the menu, is the Wonderfully Waffles with Karrage Chicken ($21.90). The dish arrived in a tempting pile of bite-sized karrage chicken sitting atop a thick waffle, a side of fresh garden salad, and an array of star-shaped cheese and cute miffy-shaped potato cakes and carrots. Fried to a golden brown, each crispy shell encases juicy and tender pops of chicken meat which goes wonderfully well with the fluffy, buttery waffle. Drizzles some of those house-made sweet shoya glaze in apposite addition to that sweet-savoury combination, and it strikes the perfect balance between flavors, textures and richness that I really enjoyed. Essentially the traditional Chicken & Waffles dish, done cuter but right.

seafood curry rice
Splashing Good Fun Japanese Seafood Curry Rice 4/5

The next recommended dish that I had was the Splashing Good Fun Japanese Seafood Curry Rice ($24.90). It comes in the form of a huge miffy face-shaped Japanese rice, and served with fish Kamaboko, cheese stars, steamed broccoli, breaded calamari, breaded ebi and scallop, and fresh tempura salmon, all of which swimming in a plate of flavourful Japanese curry. The dish bears a sweeter rendition of its curry, perhaps a hint of spiciness that is barely detectable, yet exudes a subtle aroma of spices that is not overpowering as well. Proceed to mix it all in with their generous portion of fluffy Japanese rice and it suffices as an enjoyment on its own. While the fried toppings are not as greasy, the breaded casing gives a nice crunch to the firm flavorous meat within.

chicken katsu burger1
You, Me & Miffy Makes 3 Chicken Katsu Burger 3.8/5

The You Me & Miffy Makes 3 Chicken Katsu Burger ($18.90) comes with a piece of chicken katsu sandwiched in between Miffy face shaped mantou buns, served with fries in BBQ dip, and fresh garden salad with cheese teddy and cheese star. The breaded fried chicken cutlet boasts a plumpier juicy texture within its crispy exterior. When eaten with those soft and fluffy buns, every elements come together as a decent burger which is well executed. I am actually quite impressed with it.

matcha shibuya toast
Matcha Moutain Azuki Shibuya Toast 4.2/5

This Matcha Mountain Azuki Shibuya Toast ($23.90) was pegged as the most popular dessert dish in the menu, and rightfully so. Slicing the huge shibuya toast apart reveals several cubes of buttery and crispy toast within. The smooth creamy swirl of Hokkaido softserve atop added a delicious icy milkiness to the warm buttered toast cubes. The other elements - dollops of matcha cream with fruits, dango balls, azuki, matcha sticks and a sprinkling of crunchy pistachio bits proved to be needful supplements that contribute to the entirety of the dish. Complete this with a drizzle of the slightly bitter matcha sauce for maximum pleasure.

cotton candy drink
Miffy Original Orange Soda 4/5

From the drinks menu, I had the very instagrammable Miffy Original Orange Soda ($14.90). It arrives at my table in a huge fluffy cloud of cotton candy, again Miffy-shaped, perched precariously on top of a glass of orange syrup drink with nata de coco and orange slices. It also comes with a cup of fizzy soda for me to pour and mix in with the syrup, melting the cotton candy in the process as well. I was initially skeptical about its taste but the melted cotton candy adds a sufficient sweetness to the tangy soda drink, giving it a non-cloying, refreshing and balanced taste to the overall drink. Do remember to whip out your camera and snap those photos fast though, as the cotton candy may melt a little too quickly.
bunny yuzu delight drink
Bunny Yuzu Delight 4/5

The Bunny Yuzu Delight ($10.90) is a lovely bunny tangy drink made with yuzu, cold butterfly pea-flower tea and nata de coco. Not as tangy, slightly sweeten with a hint of yuzu aroma, it is a refreshing drink perfect to wash down the food I had. Also, do note that every order of the butterfly pea-flower beverage comes with a limited edition Miffy coaster too (while stocks last!)

flatlay1

While cutesy character-themed cafes may be deemed over hyped with its lovely aesthetics yet mediocre food, the experience at Miffy x Kumoya pop-up cafe did not disappoint. Those irresistibly cute dishes are a feast to the eyes, and fare pretty well tastewise too. Also, do remember to check out the various Miffy merchandise on display at the counter and the Miffy-themed cookbook written by @Littlemissbento while you’re there. Note: The Miffy x Kumoya pop-up cafe collaboration will be ongoing till 31st December, so remember to head down before it ends!
