Yang Ming Seafood (扬名海鲜) @ Bishan Street 11 - Their Lobster Chee Cheong Fan Is A Best Try

Having seen a lot of postings from my foodie friends, I have to make my way to Yang Ming Seafood (扬名海鲜) at Bishan Street 11. The zichar place is located in a coffeeshop among the HDB estate. You will notice we ordered mostly seafood dishes because this is their forte.

Deep Fried Sakura Prawns 4.5/5

An excellent starter to kick start the night is the Deep Fried Sakura Prawns ($10). It is crispy and crunchy, with the sweetness of the sakura prawns coming through with its bite.

Steamed Baby Sotong 4.2/5

Usually, I have deep-fried baby sotong, but after trying Steamed Baby Sotong ($19), this probably will be the preferred method of cooking for me in the future. It allows me to appreciate the baby squid's tender texture, complemented by the ginger and soya sauce.

Chicken Scallop Soup 3.8/5

Next, we have the Chicken Scallop Soup ($68). It comes with the whole chicken that is cooked until fork tender. Unfortunately, I could not detect the scallop's flavour in the soup.

Steamed Flounder Fish 4/5

A dish that I requested is the Steamed Flounder ($99). I thought it is rare to see such fish served at a zichar place. For those not familiar with flounder, the flesh is firm with soft bone like stingray.

Lobster Chee Cheong Fan 4.2/5

The highlight for the night has to be the Lobster Chee Cheong Fan ($88). It is a dish my friend shared with the owner what he had in Hong Kong, and after much R&D, the chef created this dish which becomes a hit with a lot of foodies. The highlight is the silky chee cheong fan accentuated by the fried shallot, fried garlic and premium soya sauce. However, my friend who has tried the dish before felt that it lacked the crustacean's flavour this time.

Garlic La La 4.5/5

Plump and sweet is the Garlic La La ($45) topped with aromatic garlic. When you have a fresh ingredient, there isn't any need for fancy cooking allowing the ingredient to shine.

Salt-baked Crab 4.5/5

The Salt-bake Crab ($100) is another dish we enjoyed a lot. You can see the thick layer of crab roe from the photo that just send me to umami heaven.

Lucky Seafood Catering @ Geylang Lorong 17 - You Do Not Need To Travel To Ipoh For Handmade Lai Fun & Hakka Yong Tau Foo

My last overseas travel was to Ipoh with a group of foodie friends to explore the food there. One of the places we visited is Dai Shu Geok (大树脚) Yong Tau Foo. That is when I get to know the local likes to have their Yong Tau Foo with a bowl of assam laksa. For those that are unable to travel to Ipoh during this pandemic period, I am glad to say that Lucky Seafood Catering at Geylang Lorong 17 offers a similar experience. They even handmade their own Lai Fun noodle at the stall. I have to give credit to Miss Tam Chiak for discovering and sharing the place.

Approaching the stall, you will see a variety of fried Yong Tau Foo in the display for you to pick and choose. If you look beyond the display shelf, you will probably find some staffs making and frying the Yong Tau Foo on the spot.

Sak Kok Liew 4.5/5

A must-have is the Fried Jicama or better known as Sak Kok Liew in Cantonese. The mang or turnip is wrapped with dried shrimps and rolled into a circular shape with beancurd skin. This is then deep-fried to golden brown, giving it an enjoyable crispy bite on the exterior with a crunchy interior.

Fried Tofu Skin 3/5

I am not a fan of Fried Tofu Skin if it is to be eaten plain. Over here, it is served with an accompanying dipping sauce. My recommendation is to dip it into the Assam Laksa, allowing the fried tofu skin to soak up the savoury broth.

The highlight at Lucky Seafood Catering is their handmade Lai Fun noodle which is used in the Assam Laksa. I really love the freshness and the delectable texture. However, the assam laksa lacks the consistency from my friend's previous visit. We spoke to the owner, and it seems that he is continually adjusting his recipe to suit the customers' feedback. My advice is to keep to his original recipe, which makes him different from others.

Lai Fun Soup 4/5

The best way to enjoy the freshly handmade Lai Fun Soup is to have it plain with some beansprouts and spring onion.

If you not into spicy or plain, there is a third way to appreciate the Lai Fun in Kon Loh Mee style. The noodle is tossed in a dark savoury sauce and topped with minced meat.

Curry Chee Cheong Fun 2.8/5

Besides the Yong Tau Foo, you can also order Curry Chee Cheong Fun here. This is a staple dish in Ipoh that comes with pigskin and long beans in a pool of curry sauce. I thought there was too much curry powder in the sauce for my liking. By the way, the cheong fun is sourced from a supplier. They do not make it themselves.

Prepared with the original recipe from The Coconut Club, a Michelin's Bib Gourmand Singapore 2018 awardee, the Nasi Lemak ($19) is a perfect medley of flavours. It featured a base of aromatic pandan-scented rice infused with coconut milk and served with an array of topping including the crispy anchovies, peanuts, fried egg, sliced cucumber and homemade sambal chilli for that kick of spice. The dish is completed with a crispy chicken leg deep fried till golden brown.

Dry Wanton Mee 4/5

A perennial favourite amongst the locals, the Dry Wanton Mee ($14) features soft and springy al dente noodles tossed with a special black sauce and barbequed pork by Shang Palace's Chinese Executive Chef Mok Kit Keung. The dish is topped with tender char siew and crunchy leafy greens and accompanied by a bowl of flavourful pork and shrimp dumpling soup.

Hainanese Porridge 3.8/5

The Hainanese Porridge ($12) is a simple, comforting bowl of breakfast. The silky congee is cooked with tender minced pork balls and meat slices, with the flavours enhanced with a dash of sesame oil and ginger. Served with a side of crispy fried strips of Youtiao to dunk into the porridge, perfect for soaking up the goodness.

Savour other nostalgic dishes in line with unlimited helpings of it, such as a plate of economic bee hoon, luncheon meat, cabbage and fried egg.

We love the signature Soon Kueh by Ah Yee. A popular Teochew snack in Singapore, it is made with hand-kneaded dough from rice-tapioca flour. What we like is the tender and springy skin with the right amount of bite to it. The fillings are generous - an aromatic combination of shredded carrots, black fungus, turnip and dried shrimps.

The Chwee Kueh - Tiong Bahru Jian Bo Shui Kueh’s signature dish is also a favourite. Yet another popular Teochew snack well-loved for its firm rice cakes topped with sweet and savoury preserved radish. It's the perfect breakfast to kickstart your morning with.

The Chee Cheong Fun hit the spot with its thin silky smooth skin and generous glaze of sweet black sauce. Perfectly springy and chewy, the delicate rice rolls had us going back for more.

With the sides as thin as tuile and the middle soft and fluffy, these freshly made Apom Manis will have you gobbling a few in one sitting. It will be wiser to start off your buffet with this before the queue gets longer towards the end of the buffet.

Klang Bak Kut Teh 4.5/5

I had 2 bowls of Klang Bak Kut Teh, and I regretted not going for a third serving! The soup was similar to a clear and deep-coloured herbal consomme that was richly flavoured by Chinese herbs, spices and pork bones. The pork ribs were tender, and the addition of pig's skins was a bonus.

Char Koay Kat is a crowd pleaser with its dark, caramelised sauce that flavoured each and every element on the plate. The charred bits of chye poh and garlic were dangerously addictive, and especially so when fish sauce and garlic were added to boost its flavours. Lots of eggs in each plate, which made it even more satisfying.

Penang White Curry Mee 4/5

It was quite a rare opportunity to be able to try this Penang White Curry Mee. The coconut broth on its own surprised me with its depth of flavour. The chilli paste at the side was meant to be mixed in to complete the curry, but it was loaded with so much oomph that I used it as a dip for the ingredients instead, to enjoy it thoroughly.

Nasi Kandar 3.5/5

Nasi Kandar is a northern Malaysian staple originating from Penang, and my favourite element in this dish was the blend of fish and squid curry that was served over the perfectly steamed rice. From the look of it, I knew it would not be overly creamy, and I like how robust it was, with a gentle fieriness only kicking in at the end.

Ipoh Yong Tau Foo 3/5

Ipoh Yong Tau Foo is usually a simple dish that speaks volume with a broth that one craves every now and then. But the chilli here is quite different from the flavour that we are more familiar with. I reckon having the dry version with the soup at the side will give you the best of both worlds.

KL Hokkien Mee 2.8/5

Another dish that we are more familiar with is KL Hokkien Mee. It didn't have that alluring black coat of dark soy sauce, perhaps that was why it wasn't as satisfying as expected. But the chilli was superb.

I was elated to find Ipoh Chee Cheong Fun because I wanted to try it again after my visit to Ipoh. You could have it 2 ways - either with minced meat mushroom sauce or curry sauce. But I feel the best way to appreciate the lovely steamed rice noodle rolls is to have it with just the fried shallots and sesame.

The buffet spread will consists old school Hong Kong delights such as quail egg siew mai, braised beef rib with mui choy, claypot lamb brisket with bamboo shoot and more.

Warm up the stomach with a bowl of comforting Chui Chow Oyster Porridge. The addition of fresh oyster provided the additional boost to the flavourful broth while the rice puff gives it a delightful finishing crisp.

Hong Kong Cart Noodle 4.2/5

A must try is the Hong Kong Cart Noodle, a popular street food originating in the 1950s. What stand out is the superb broth that is packed with depth and robustness. The beauty of cart noodle is that one can add anything into their bowl of noodle, and this comes with the choice of braised chicken wing, curry fishball, cuttlefish and braised beef. I love this so much that I gone back for a second helping.

Pan Fried Abalone Cheong Fun with XO Sauce 4/5

Hong Kong cuisine is known for the dim sum and its inevitable that these needs to be on the buffet spread. The Quail Egg Siew Mai is a traditional dim sum that is hardly seen on the menu nowadays. My favourite goes to to the Pan Fried Abalone Cheong Fun with XO Sauce for its wok-hei, complemented by the excellent XO sauce.

Baby Lobster in "Bi Feng Tang" Style 3.8/5

Only available during dinner is the Baby Lobster in "Bi Feng Tang" Style. The bouncy flesh of the baby lobster is coated with lots of garlic, ginger, chilli and spring onion for an aromatic finish.

Braised Beef Rib with "Mui Choy" 3.8/5

While the Braised Beef Rib with "Mui Choy" is cooked until very tender, I feel that the braised beef rib shines on its own even without the accompanying Mui Choy.

For the dessert section, you can also find popular and traditional Hong Kong street snacks such as Egg Waffle, Hong Kong Red Bean Pudding, Bolo Bao, Egg Tart and Walnut Cookies. Let you into a secret, I like to have the egg waffle together with the durian pengat. It is just an heavenly combination.
