Three Point Two @ Kampong Bahru - Introducing New Durian Delights, Gelato Bun And Craqueline Puffs

ThreePointTwo1

Three Point Two at Kampong Bahru is a gelato cafe that offers a range of specially crafted durian delights for durian aficionados. This cafe is the founders' second outlet, following their successful venture Pang Zi Durian at Jurong West. As durian sellers themselves, one can be assured of the quality of durians used in their ice cream and sweet treats.

ThreePointTwo3

First-timers visiting Three Point Two may go for Four Heavenly Kings ($16.80), showcasing two D24 Durian Puffs, two MSW Craquelin Puff, two Durian Mochi and one Durian Mousse. Their Durian Mousse ($5.50, additional D24 shot +$1) made quite an impression during my very first visit to Pang Zi Durian. I love the bittersweet dollop of D24 shot atop the mousse, and its sweetness level was quite on point.

ThreePointTwo12

The Durian Puffs are like choux pastry. The lightly crisp exterior that comes with an elevated buttery taste complemented the durian mousse. However, for the durian filling, I would prefer more flesh in it for better textural contrast.

ThreePointTwo13

The Mochi was all right. The highlight goes to the MSW Craquelin Puff that has a very indulgent buttery, sugary crust.

ThreePointTwo17

ThreePointTwo24

Waffle is also on the menu to pair with your gelatos. However, for a more interesting experience, or even a more delicious one, in my opinion, go for its Gelato Bun ($4). It is like a blown-up version of the Craquelin Puff that gives twice the pleasure of eating it. We had ours with Pistachio gelato, seemingly quite popular among its regulars.

Birdfolks @ NEWest - American-inspired Fried Chicken With A Hint of Japanese Influence, Local Flavours And Casual Street Concept

BirdFolks1

Located within NEWest West Coast Drive, the inconspicuous cafe - Birdfolks serves up delicious American-inspired fried chicken with an Asian twist. You can now have your Nanyang kopi with fried chicken burgers or big breakfast platter. If you're craving for Japanese, they also offer mentaiko salmon bowl and tamago bowl.

BirdFolks3
Crispy Bun & Condensed Milk 3.8/5

To start the meal, we had their Crispy Bun & Condensed Milk ($4). While the brioche buns were soft and fluffy, they were barely toasted and lacked the crispiness that we had anticipated. However, we still enjoyed the pillowy soft brioche buns, with ample condensed milk to sweeten up the deal.

BirdFolks12
BF Eggs Benny 3.5/5

From the brunch menu, which is available only from 11am to 5pm, we had their BF Eggs Benny ($13), which features turkey ham, ikura and hollandaise sauce and eggs on soft brioche buns. We found that the eggs are cooked soft-boiled rather than poached, which is likely an interesting Asian twist to the classic egg bens. The combination of turkey ham and ikura also made the dish lean towards the salty side. We wished there were other elements to help balance the dish's flavours.

BirdFolks7
Classic Buttermilk Pancakes 4/5

When you're at Birdfolks, a must-try is their signature fried chicken. The Classic Buttermilk Pancakes ($11) features fluffy buttermilk pancakes with fried chicken, crushed pistachios, cranberries and served with maple and butter. The chicken pieces were well-marinated, prepared and fried upon order, making it even juicier and tender while being perfectly crispy and crunchy on the outside.

BirdFolks8
Potato Wonderland 4/5

The Potato Wonderland ($15) is an ultimate platter of oregano fries, sweet potato fries, curly fries, tater tots and croquette, paired with mayo. The perfect side to share with your friends, as the huge platter has a bit of everything fried, so there is simply no lack of choices. We recommend sharing it with at least 4 friends or more.

The Braised Vermicelli with Scallop with Egg White Topped with Crispy Conpoy ($36 per portion) from Crystal Jade Palace may look assuming but permeated with flavourful rich seafood stock, fresh scallops and fried conpoy. I would recommend adding some vinegar to accentuate the full enjoyment.

CrystalJadePalace13
Roasted Irish Duck with Crispy Rice in Chef's Special Sauce

Available at Crystal Jade Golden Palace, Dining IN and Pavilion is the Roasted Irish Duck with Crispy Rice in Chef's Special Sauce ($52/$90). CrystalJadePalace16
Braised Fish Tofu with Shiitake Mushroom and Black Moss in Oyster Sauce 4.5/5

A dish that I adore is the Braised Fish Tofu with Shiitake Mushroom and Black Moss in Oyster Sauce ($26.80 regular) available at Crystal Jade Jiang Nan, Kitchen and La Mian Xiao Long Bao. The soft, bouncy fish tofu has such a delightful bite that it felt like palate has been caress by a soft pillow.

Making another exclusive return for a limited time is the Pan-fried Chilli Crab Bun ($10.80/3pcs). It soft and fluffy bun comes with succulent crab meat inside while the bottom is pan-fried to a slight crisp. While I enjoyed the soft and fluffy dough, I find the sauce on the garlicky side, which is not my preferred interpretation of the chilli crab sauce.

ParadiseDynastry6
Deep-fried Crispy Duck served with Lotus Bun 3.8/5

Similar to how we enjoy Peking Duck, the Deep-fried Crispy Duck served with Lotus Bun ($30/half) is best enjoyed by sandwiching a piece of the crispy duck in the soft lotus bun and paired with the sweet hoisin sauce, and cucumber and radish condiments.

ParadiseDynastry5

The Lobby Lounge @ InterContinental Singapore - Journey Through A Baking Odyssey With Classic Afternoon Tea: Origins

IMG_20190822_142633_538

InterContinental Singapore’s Executive Pastry Chef Ben Goh was recently awarded by World Gourmet Summit as the Pastry Chef of The Year 2019. In celebration of his recent accolade, diners get to indulge in the new Classic Afternoon Tea: Origins at The Lobby Lounge available from 1 August to 31 October 2019.

Inspired by Chef Ben’s humble beginnings and his love of sweets, each treat in this afternoon tea presentation tells a story of his foray into culinary arts, documenting key milestones in the illustrious chef’s career.

IMG_20190822_141255_149

We were treated to a beautiful multi-tiered stand which showcases a gorgeous array of desserts that represents Chef Ben’s pastry endeavours. Starting from the Kueh Lapis - first cake baked with his grandma in preparation for Chinese New Year to the desserts which helped him clinched his first championship winning at overseas competitions.

IMG_20190822_140552_571

Highlights include the Apple Ginger Chocolate Praline, which helped Chef Ben Goh clinched his winning at his first overseas competition at Food & Hotel Malaysia in 2009. Also the Peach Melba Cheesecake, which helped him clinch his first International Championship in 2013 (World Dubai Hospitality Championship 2013). We loved the subtle sweet peach aroma which complemented the light creamy cheesecake perfectly.

IMG_20190822_140639_841

Another favourite is the Chocolate Lemongrass Pineapple Cake which won him his first Japan Podium at Japan Cake Show in 2015. Covered in rich chocolate decadence and a tinge of lemongrass aroma, this exquisite creation by Chef Ben hit all the right notes with its texture and flavours.

IMG_20190822_141409_492

Take a trip down memory lane with the authentic Buttercream Cake, reminiscent of his childhood. Simple as it looks, but every bit as delicious with its soft fluffy texture and complimenting cream which adds a subtle sweetness and moisture to the cake.

IMG_20190822_140248_859

Guests with a penchant for savoury delights will also enjoy treats such as Bacon Onion Quiche, Wild Mushroom Cappuccino with White Truffle Cream, and Smoked Chicken, Chicken Floss and Coleslaw on Charcoal Bun.

IMG_20190822_141604_526

A favourite would be the Crabmeat Mantou, with a juicy piece of crab meat on creamy avocado and a touch of caviar. Complete with a crispy piece of mantou to add a crunch to the savoury treat.

IMG_20190822_140434_612

Not forgetting the all-time favourite Cranberry Lemon Scones and English Scones with strawberry jam, fig jam and clotted cream.

IMG_20190822_142416_431

Further elevate your indulgent afternoon experience with a flute of Taittinger Brut Champagne, with unlimited servings of ice cream such as the Yoghurt Yuzu ice cream and Strawberry Sherbet, which came in second runner up at Mondial Des Arts Sucrés 2018. We loved the smooth creaminess of the ice cream, filled with a refreshing tanginess from the yuzu and strawberry, which makes for the perfect end to the delectable classic afternoon tea treat.

IMG_20190822_140121_023

Classic Afternoon Tea: Origins is available at The Lobby Lounge from 1 August to 31 October 2019, from 2pm to 5pm daily. Bao Makers @ Jiak Chuan Road - Celebrates 3rd Anniversary With A Newer And Even More Extensive Menu

011118_BaoMakers18

Having relocated to the hip enclave of Jiak Chuan Road from its previous venue at Jalan Besah in November last year, Singapore's pioneer Bao concept restaurant, Bao Makers released a refreshed menu with an even wider array of exciting items in conjunction with their upcoming 3rd anniversary. Established in 2015, Bao Makers pride themselves in their specialisation of delectable open-faced buns, infusing local elements into this delicacy inspired by the traditional kong bak bao.

IMG_20181030_000530_659
Crabmeat Beancurd 4.2/5

Starting off with the appetisers, we had the Crabmeat Beancurd with Century Egg Sauce ($5.80). Featuring a silky smooth beancurd tofu with refreshing shredded crabmeat embedded within, it comes with a rich century egg sauce which packs a sharp spicy tinge to further liven up the flavour. The finishing touches of chopped century egg albumen and tobiko contribute another textural dimension to the dish, displaying an excellent interplay of flavours and textures.

IMG_20181029_235708_929
Salmon Mentaiko Roll 3.8/5

The Salmon Mentaiko Roll ($16.80) features a maki rolls wrapped around crabsticks and crunchy cucumber pieces, before being topped with blow-torched salmon and drenched in a rich pool mentaiko sauce and generous tobiko atop.

IMG_20181029_232754_580
Chilli Crab Bao 4.5/5, Fried Salted Egg Chicken Bao 4.2/5, Salmon Mentaiko Bao 4/5

The highlight would be their signature baos - fluffy mantous pan-fried slightly crisp exterior, loaded with generous servings of chilli crab meat or salted egg chicken were absolutely delicious. My favourite is the Chilli Crab Bao with chunks of fresh chilli crab meat packed with addictive spicy notes admist the meat's natural sweetness.

IMG_20181030_000847_102

The Salmon Mentaiko Bao came with the option of steamed bao. Sandwiched in between these soft fluffy buns was a piece of fried crispy salmon slathered with a layer of rich mentaiko sauce and a slice of cheese atop.

IMG_20181029_234123_649
Teriyaki Beef Steak 4.2/5

To cater to the greater lunch-time and after-office crowds, Bao Makers further spruce up their menu by offering a variety of Japanese rice bowls and sharing plates as well, apart from their signature baos. For the lunch-goes, tuck into their Teriyaki Beef Steak Bowl ($17.80). Generous slices of pan-seared Australian striploin coated with a savoury sweet house blend teriyaki sauce lay atop a bowl of fluffy Japanese rice, and is further topped with a runny onsen egg that soaks up all the elements in the dish in perfect golden goodness.

IMG_20181029_233412_123
Kecap Manis Chicken 3.5/5

Next come the sharing plates which are available on the dinner menu. The Kecap Manis Chicken ($8.80) features deep fried chicken cubes slathered in kecap manis marinate and pepper, which rendered the chicken cubes a tad too salty. While the sauce was overwhelming in terms of flavour, the chicken was executed well.

IMG_20181029_233801_906
Cheese Burger Spring Roll 4/5

Bao Makers introduces the Sharing Plates concept for dinner patrons, where diners can relish in a diversity of dishes with groups of friends or family. Reminiscent of the classic cheese burger, the Cheese Burger Spring Roll ($9.80) comes in the form of crispy fried spring rolls instead of burger buns. This rendition is no less satisfying as the richly flavorous fillings of minced beef and cheese taste almost like the real cheese burger.

IMG_20181029_235506_372
Cookie Bomb 4/5

End the meal on a sweet note with the restaurant's perennial favourite dessert of the Cookie Bomb ($7.50) which features the perfect combination of hot and cold with the cold creamy vanilla ice cream atop a warm soft baked cookie dough base filled with chocolate chips within.

IMG_20181030_000226_971
Black Sesame Ice Cream 4/5

With 3 ice cream options on the menu, we went with the Black Sesame ice cream, which was smooth and creamy with a rich roasted nutty fragrance.

IMG_20181029_235623_665
Singapore's Latte Peng 4/5

Opt for the Singapore's Latte Peng to quench your thirst after feasting on the rich flavoursome dishes. The fragrant iced latte comes with homemade espresso jelly. The sweetness of the jelly complement the bitterness of the latte to achieve a balance in taste.
