Kulto @ Amoy Street - Bringing Vibrant Spanish Flavours to Singapore

Kulto23

Kulto, located along Amoy Street, has garnered a loyal following for its authentic Spanish fare, surviving even the challenges of COVID-19 in Singapore's highly competitive food scene. Having heard much about the restaurant, I had the opportunity to visit recently and try a selection of their dishes. It was a meal that transported my taste buds to Spain, right in the heart of Singapore.

Kulto2
Jamon Iberico Croquettes and Truffle Mushroom Croquettes 4/5

We started with the Jamon Iberico Croquettes and Truffle Mushroom Croquettes, and they set the tone for the rest of the evening. Deep-fried to a perfect golden brown, each croquette boasted a crisp exterior while the inside was irresistibly creamy and pillowy. The savoury Jamon Iberico and earthy truffle mushroom filling made for delightful bites — simple yet packed with flavour.

Kulto5
Iberico Pork Belly with Piquillo Peppers & Caramelized Onion Pintxos 4/5

Next, we tried the Iberico Pork Belly with Piquillo Peppers & Caramelized Onion Pintxos. A slab of chargrilled Iberico pork belly was served atop a piece of toasted bread, and the pork itself was rich and flavourful. The caramelized onions added a perfect sweetness, cutting through the richness of the pork and creating a balanced and satisfying bite.

Kulto10
Salmon Tartare, Crispy Avocado & Almond Cream 4.5/5

A standout dish of the evening was the Salmon Tartare, Crispy Avocado & Almond Cream ($26). At first, the combination seemed unusual, but it turned out to be a unique pairing that worked surprisingly well. The freshness of the salmon paired beautifully with the creamy avocado, while the almond cream brought everything together with its rich, nutty flavour. It is a harmonious and inventive dish that I'd happily order again.

Kulto13
Roasted Cauliflower with Garlic Chilli Sauce, Hummus & Hazelnuts 4.8/5

I'm a fan of roasted cauliflower, having tried an excellent rendition at Kulto's sister restaurant. When I saw the Roasted Cauliflower ($24) on Kulto's menu, it was a must-order for me. This version did not disappoint — the spicy kick from the garlic chilli sauce elevated the charred and crunchy cauliflower. The creamy hummus and the delightful crunch of hazelnuts further enhanced the dish, adding multiple layers of texture and flavour.

Kulto18
Iberico Pork Rib Eye with Celeriac Puree & Broccolini 250g 4.5/5

For the main protein, we opted for the Iberico Pork Rib Eye with Celeriac Puree & Broccolini ($38). The pork rib eye was perfectly cooked, with a beautiful char on the outside, yet tender and juicy on the inside. The accompanying celeriac puree was smooth and earthy, complementing the pork, while the broccolini added a touch of freshness to round off the dish. It is a hearty and satisfying choice for those who enjoy robust flavours.

Kulto25
Squid Ink Paella 4.5/5

A highlight of Kulto's menu is their Squid Ink Paella, which comes in two sizes ($55 for a small portion, $75 for a larger one). Looking around the dining room, it was clear this dish was a crowd favourite, with many tables opting for it. The squid ink-infused rice was rich with the briny essence of the sea, and the dish was loaded with seafood, including seabass, mussels, clams, and squid. Every bite bursts with flavour, making it a must-try if you're a paella fan.

Kulto29
Kulto Cheesecake 5/5

To wrap up the meal, we indulged in the Kulto Cheesecake ($16). This dessert was a showstopper. Creamy and cheesy with a beautifully caramelized top, it had just the right amount of richness. The biscuity base added a satisfying crunch, while the accompanying raspberry ice cream helped cut through the cheesecake's richness. It was the perfect way to end the meal and is a definite must-have for any visit to Kulto.

Kulto impresses with its vibrant and flavourful Spanish fare, offering a variety of dishes that showcase the best of Spanish cuisine with a modern twist. The restaurant's cosy and laid-back ambience adds to the overall dining experience, making it a great spot to enjoy with friends and family. Whether you're in the mood for a rich Squid Ink Paella or looking to end your meal on a sweet note with their creamy Kulto Cheesecake, this Amoy Street gem delivers in every way.

Pacific Emporium @ Pan Pacific Singapore – Local Inspired Afternoon Tea, Where the Flavours of Singapore are Elevated to an Art

Ambience 1

Set 1

Are you looking for a delightful mid-day retreat? The Local-Inspired Afternoon Tea at Pacific Emporium might be just what you need. Set in the elegant lobby of Pan Pacific Singapore, this experience invites you to relax in charming floating pods. Enjoy a tranquil afternoon while savouring a selection of teas, coffees, or even a glass of champagne, accompanied by an array of delectable sweet and savoury bites.

Savouries 1

We recommend beginning with the savoury items and then moving on to sweet treats, alternating between the two for a balanced experience. Explore a twist on beloved Southeast Asian cuisine with dishes such as Singapore Chilli Crab Meat in Egg Custard with Mini Bun, Hai Tien Lo's Salted Egg Yolk Yam Puff, and Penang Crispy Pork Lobak with Five Spices wrapped in Bean Curd Skin.

Crispy Pork Lobak 1
Penang Crispy Pork Lobak with Five Spices wrapped in Bean Curd Skin 3.5/5

Chilli Crab Meat Egg Custard 1
Singapore Chilli Crab Meat in Egg Custard with Mini Bun 3.5/5

While the chilli crab meat sauce was well-balanced with a satisfying mix of sweetness and spice, the egg custard at the bottom lacked flavour. Additionally, it was challenging to combine all the elements into a single, cohesive bite.

Baba Chanoush Avo 1
Baba Ghanoush Avocado Tart 3/5

Originally, this item was served on a baguette, but customer feedback indicated that the baguette was too hard, leading to a switch to a tart shell. Unfortunately, the tart shell overshadowed the filling, which was relatively mild in flavour. As a result, the taste of the tart shell dominated, leaving the intended flavours of the filling barely noticeable.

Complimentary 1
Crabmeat on Melon 3.8/5

We also sampled an additional item from the savoury tier - Crabmeat on Melon Stick, elegantly topped with ikura. This dish offered a refreshing twist on the classic Italian Prosciutto e Melone, featuring sweet crabmeat paired with juicy melon for a delightful and visually appealing presentation.

Wagyu Beef Sando 1
Keyaki’s Wagyu Beef Sando 4/5

Our standout of the day was undoubtedly the Keyaki's Wagyu Beef Sando. This dish features a generous slab of exquisitely seasoned wagyu beef, nestled between two slices of perfectly toasted bread. The wagyu was tender and richly flavourful, complemented by the crispy, golden-brown toast that added a satisfying crunch.

Sweets 1

Moving on to the sweets, we were presented with a selection of picture-perfect treats featuring local flair, including Mango Pomelo Sablé, Coconut Bandung with Chendol, and more. While there were a few hits and misses among the offerings, the overall experience was delightful and made for a charming afternoon tea.

Coconut Bandung with Chendol 1
Coconut Bandung with Chendol 3/5

Encased in a chocolate shell was the Coconut Bandung cream, topped with chendol and desiccated coconut. We had high hopes for this treat, but unfortunately, the flavours did not shine through as expected. The predominant taste was of the chocolate shell, overshadowing the subtle coconut and bandung elements.

Mango Pomelo Sable 1
Mango Pomelo Sablé 3.8/5

Hazlenut Crunchy Dark Coco 3
Hazelnut Crunchy Dark Choc 4/5

Our favourite of the sweets was the Hazelnut Crunchy Dark Chocolate. This treat struck a perfect balance, not overly sweet, and packed with robust hazelnut flavour in every bite. The dark chocolate provided a rich, slightly bitter contrast that complemented the crunchy texture and nutty essence.

Apple Yuzu Citrus 1
Apple Yuzu Citrus 3.5/5

Raspberry & Pulut Hitam 1
Raspberry Sakura Red Velvet 2.8/5, Pulut Hitam Brûlée Mousse 3/5

Two of the sweet items are available only from Monday to Friday. The Raspberry Sakura Red Velvet didn't quite suit our palate, but the Pulut Hitam Brûlée Mousse was a delightful twist on a familiar local dessert. The mousse combined the classic flavours of pulut hitam with a creamy brûlée texture, offering a refreshing and inventive take on a beloved favourite.

Floating Pods

There are Local Experience Live Stations if you come on the weekends, where you get to try out five tantalising local delights of Prawn Noodle Soup with Fresh Tiger Prawn, Water Spinach, and Sliced Pork, Penang Tangy Assam Laksa, Wok Hei Char Kway Teow with Pacific Crab Meat, Local Fruit Rojak, and D24 Durian Crêpe.

Champagne 1

For just an additional $20, you can elevate your afternoon tea experience with a glass of Taittinger Brut Réserve Champagne, enhancing your tea or coffee with a touch of luxury.

We've also heard that the menu will be updated around October, so be sure to check their website for the latest offerings and updates.

Boeuf @ Teloy Ayer Street - Launches A Revamped Menu Alongside an Upgrade Weekend Free-Flow Steak Promotion

IMG_4943

Known for its dry-aged steaks, Boeuf at Telok Ayer Street recently launched a revamped menu alongside an upgrade to its popular Weekend Free-Flow Steak promotion, including three unlimited sides.

IMG_4898
Shrimp Avocado Salad 4.5/5

Adding to the range of appetisers available, the Shrimp Avocado Salad ($18) will certainly appeal to seafood lovers. Lightly coated with a sweet and tangy homemade whiskey cocktail sauce, the chilled shrimp boasted a succulent texture enhanced by creamy fresh avocado slices, with pops of crunch and sweetness from pomegranate seeds. Topped with lumpfish caviar, the salad's overall sweetness was punctuated by a delightful briny and salty nuance.

IMG_4913
BBQ Short Ribs 5/5

Due to popular demand, the BBQ Short Ribs ($48), previously available only as part of a platter, are now offered à la carte. It's no wonder, given that the AUS Black Angus Short Ribs were incredibly tender and juicy, with delectably gelatinous parts. The exterior, deliciously caramelised with a blood orange glazed BBQ sauce, provided a sweet and umami complement to the beefy flavours.

IMG_4928
Signature Dry-Aged Ribeye 3.5/5

IMG_4940
Steak Butter

We also tried the Signature Dry-Aged Ribeye ($99) — AUS Black Angus Ribeye MB5 (400g), served with one side and one sauce of your choice. Truffle fries and steak butter are new items, also available à la carte. The steak butter, offered in three different flavours, might intrigue you for an enhanced experience. However, I didn't enjoy the ribeye as much as the short ribs, finding it slightly too chewy and lacking in flavour.

IMG_4936
Truffle Fries 3.5/5

The fries were pretty crisp and moreish with a creamy truffle dip. However, I prefer them with a generous sprinkle of parmesan for that extra oomph.

IMG_4954
Lemon Tart 4/5

For dessert, we had the Lemon Tart ($13 for 2 pieces). Unlike a regular lemon tart filled entirely with lemon curd, which can be overly sweet, this one was filled with whipped mascarpone flavoured with Madagascar vanilla lemon curd and a sprinkle of toasted hazelnuts, offering a more balanced sweetness.

IMG_4925

As mentioned, Boeuf brings a new Weekend Free Flow Steak Promotion. For just $48++ per diner, enjoy endless servings of Argentinian Black Angus Ribeye Steak, grilled over a charcoal fire, with a free-flow trio of sides, including crisp skinny fries, fresh sourdough with butter, and creamed spinach. There is also a refreshing three-course set lunch ($29.90 ++ ) including an appetiser, main course, and coffee or dessert.

The restaurant masterfully utilises fire to enhance each ingredient's innate rustic flavours, crafting a chic yet relaxed atmosphere distinct from its sister establishments.

Fireplace8
Watermelon Salad 4/5

Our dinner commenced with the Watermelon Salad ($14), a delightful ensemble of fresh watermelon cubes, red onions, cucumbers, toasted pine nuts, feta cheese, and coriander. Elevated by a coriander lime dressing, the salad resonated with vibrant hues and bright flavours.

Fireplace22
Avocado 4.2/5

The Avocado ($12), grilled over an applewood-fired grill, revealed a perfectly creamy texture. Crowned with roasted corn kernels and diced tomatoes, the dish boasted a harmonious interplay of sweetness and creaminess, accentuated by a drizzle of ponzu dressing.

Fireplace12
Coal-Roasted Sweet Potatoes 3.8/5

Coal-Roasted Sweet Potatoes ($10) underwent a transformative journey from boiling to grilling on the applewood-fired grill. Seasoned with salt and blended fennel seeds, the dish showcased the sweet nuances of purple sweet potatoes, intensified through the grilling process and paired with sour cream.

Fireplace16
Octopus Tentacles 4/5

The Octopus Tentacles ($28) underwent tender simmering before meeting the applewood-fired grill. Adorned with housemade coriander pesto sauce, celery cress, and Japanese 7-spice blend, the dish flaunted a delightful marriage of textures and flavours.

Fireplace4
Bone Marrow Toast 4/5

The Bone Marrow Toast ($28) presented a rich indulgence as beef bone marrow graced a toasted housemade brioche bread. Caper, parsley, caramelised onions, and pickled shallots adorned the ensemble, contributing to a balanced and delectable finish.

Fireplace24
Half Spanish Suckling Pig 4/5

Transitioning to mains, the Half Spanish Suckling Pig ($240) took centre stage, slow-cooked over the fire pit for three hours until the meat achieved tender succulence and the skin crisped to perfection. Ideal for sharing, this dish embodied a celebration of flavours.

Fireplace26
Dirty Duck 4.2/5

The Dirty Duck ($48) showcased an Irish duck rubbed with a medley of aromatic spices and sous vide and finished on the grill. The succulent meat, smoky char, and infused spice aroma resonated harmoniously, complemented by the thoughtful addition of grilled plum to cut through the richness.

Fireplace30
8 Hours Wood-fired Roasted Whole Lamb 3.8/5

A testament to its dedication, the 8 Hours Wood-fired Roasted Whole Lamb, 300g ($50), featured Australian Lamb slow-cooked for eight hours over the fire pit. The result was a tender and juicy delight devoid of any gamey undertones.

Fireplace36
Lemon Pound Cake 3.8/5

The Lemon Pound Cake ($13) showcased a unique twist for a sweet ending. Grilled on the applewood-fire pit after being brushed with melted butter, the cake's charred surface provided a delightful contrast. It was a symphony of textures, served with creme fraiche and mixed berries compote.

Fireplace33
Grilled Spiced Rum Pineapple 4/5

Concluding our feast, the Grilled Spiced Rum Pineapple ($14) offered a sweet and tangy finale. Soaked in rum and grilled over the fire pit, the pineapple slices were served with spiced rum syrup and a scoop of rum and raisin ice cream, creating a memorable conclusion to our dinner experience.

Fireplace by Bedrock embodies a fusion of rustic charm and finesse, inviting diners to savour the nuanced artistry of fire-kissed flavours.

Maguro Samurai @ Robertson Quay - New Modern “Fish Market” Izakaya Specialising in Unique Tuna Parts, Overflowing Ikura Dons and More

IMG_0329

Maguro Samurai, a new addition to the Robertson Quay dining scene, brings a modern 'fish market-style' izakaya concept to Singapore. Associated with Kansushi, the restaurant takes pride in its range of authentic Japanese dishes, including items uncommonly found in Singapore.

IMG_0325

The interesting 'fish market' concept allows diners to first take their pick from a display of seafood imported from Japan and then decide on a preferred cooking method. Some of these include sashimi, grilled and sushi.

IMG_0324

For its interior, several samurai swords are on display, alongside an impressive collection of Japanese alcohols, most of which are available for order.

IMG_0326
Avocado Shiokobu Ae 4/5

Our first dish was the Avocado Shiokobu Ae ($9), which had cubes of creamy avocado tossed in salted kelp and topped with bonito. We enjoyed this lightly savoury starter but wished it came in a more significant portion for its price.

IMG_0327
Maguro Yukke 4.5/5

Next up, we had their Maguro Yukke ($38). Crack the silky raw egg yolk and mix it thoroughly to let the yolk coat each piece of tuna. The tuna chunks, marinated in a flavorful spicy sauce, matched harmoniously.

IMG_0328
Negitoro Bucket 3.8/5

The Negitoro Bucket ($28) comprises minced fatty tuna and is meant to be savoured as a spread on crunchy baguette slices. While the additional garlic butter on the baguette was clever, we found it quite average overall.

IMG_0330
Maguro Sashimi Mori 4.5/5

Tuna lovers should check out the Maguro Sashimi Mori ($52), which showcases four different tuna sashimi cuts. We had fresh and thick slices of Otoro (fatty tuna), Chutoro (medium fatty tuna), Maguro Zuniku (tuna head meat) and Akami (Bluefin tuna).

IMG_0331
Grilled Maguro Zuniku 4.5/5

After enjoying the sashimi version, we were excited to try the Grilled Maguro Zuniku ($38). The grilled tuna head meat carried a bit of a soft, fatty texture and was done tender and smoky.

IMG_0332
Grilled Maguro Hohoniku 4.5/5

Similarly, the Grilled Maguro Hohoniku ($16) was also grilled expertly, with the tuna cheek meat retaining its buttery and firm yet tender bite. The simple condiments of fresh wasabi, salt and garlic chips were more than sufficient.

IMG_0333
Ninniku Syoyu Engawa Don 4.2/5

We had two different dons, the first being the Ninniku Syoyu Engawa Don (Flounder fin garlic flavour rice bowl). It was quite a small bowl, but we were impressed by the buttery slices of melt-in-your-mouth Engawa.

IMG_0334
Ikura Kobore Don 4/5

The presentation of the Ikura Kobore Don ($39) was a whole visual treat. The chef first began a short performance on his drums while one of his servers generously topped on spoons of ikura synchronised to the rhythm of the beats. The don was finished with a shimmering spray of gold dust. While the plump ikura was briny and flavourful, this is definitely best as a sharing dish for 3 or more pax.

IMG_0335
Kakigori 3.8/5

Dessert was a traditional Japanese offering, a freshly made calamansi-flavoured Kakigori. The layers of shaved ice here are thicker with a soft texture. It was refreshing, albeit a bit sweet.

Overall, the dishes we sampled at Maguro Samurai were indeed of decent quality; however, the general pricing was also relatively high.
